I went in with my daughter and Dr. Bloch is so kind, and truly amazing with how he was able to have her sit still and focus on what he was going, and even gave her candy and stickers afterwards! It made me feel so much better than the last doctor I went to. She was so excited to see all of the toys, and he let her play with a toy while she was in the chair. His optician Ruby was so sweet and actually took the time to fully explain our vision insurance for me too. She made it so easy and gave us so many options for how to go about my daughter's glasses. 10/10 service for sure!! read more

My 2.5 year old son was told by our pediatrician that he has an astigmatism and we needed to get it further checked out by an optometrist. I called about 3 other "pediatric" optometrists, and they only saw kids 5 and over. I found Dr. Bloch, got an appointment for my son within two days. First of all, the receptionist was so sweet checking us in. They have so many toys my son happily played and waited. Dr. Bloch did the most thorough exam. My son doesn't speak well yet, and he was so patient and had every trick in the book to get him through the long exam. You can see how great he is with kids. Never once was he frustrated that my son was having trouble sitting or looking etc. He is used to dealing with babies/non talkers, you can tell. He ended up needing glasses. Dr. Bloch took so much time with me to explain exactly the problems with his vision. I left understanding (as someone with perfect site). His lovely helpers got my son fitted for glasses. If you have a little kid, come here. You will be in the best hands! read more

We love Dr. Bloch. My whole family is under his care and he is excellent with kids! I had a very negative experience at a different local eye doctor and so we were relieved to find Dr. Bloch, clearly an expert and very experienced with making sure his pediatric patients feel comfortable. I appreciate that he offers full eye evaluations to screen for other health issues. When I saw him for my eye exam recently and explained some of the symptoms that are unrelated to my eye, he took the time to look into it with me and offered referrals if needed. Definitely felt more cared for and listened to than with multiple other doctors I had seen before him. He offers after hour and emergency care and offers a reading program to help dyslexic or otherwise struggling readers. To me, this shows how much he cares about his patients. Saw Dr Bloch for a second opinion. I have been having a blurry spot occasionally in one of my eyes. My regular eye doctor didn't really say much about it. First off the gal, Ruby, who greeted us in the office was super sweet and couldn't be nicer. Dr Bloch gave me such a thorough exam. I have to say I have been seeing my regular doctor for years and I don't think he is as good. Upon examination Dr Bloch informed me the blurry spot is Asteroid Hyalosis. Not anything to worry about. I wish I had been told this by my other doctor. Strange he didn't catch it. Dr Bloch explained everything so well it was easy to understand. He then checked my progressive lenses and told me the RX was way off. I did send them off to an online lens replacement company to save money. I was a little shocked. Talk about a man who knows his stuff! Besides being super competent, Dr Bloch has the nicest demeanor. I feel very confident getting my eyes examined here. I've been going to Dr. Bloch for 10 years now. I wear glasses and contacts and see him regularly. My 2 boys have been going to him since day 1 (well, maybe not the FIRST day they were born!) as well. They both wear glasses and also go regularly. That being said, I feel like I'm a good judge of character and professionalism when it comes to Dr. Bloch and his staff. He's always been nothing but straight-forward and honest. Some years when my vision hasn't changed much he's never pressured me to purchase new frames/contacts and that goes for my boys as well. I appreciate that. Then there have been other times (like my last 2 appointments) when I walk out of his office with new contacts, just to find out I'm not happy with the prescription or the fit. He's always graciously taken me back in to figure out the problem and has fit me with new ones until it's right. A couple times that meant me trying 3-4 different contacts until we found one that I was comfortable with. I now joke I'm 'THAT' patient! (Sorry Dr. Bloch) He's bent over backwards for me many-a-time. Either way, he wants all his patients to walk out happy and seeing 20/20! As far as his staff . . . Jan (front desk) is awesome and has worked with me and my 3 insurances (aargh!) to figure out the best possible way to use my benefits. Recently, there was a mix-up with which insurance to use (how could there NOT be with 3!) and I got billed incorrectly. Well, Jan figured it all out (see how awesome she is?), spoke to Dr. Bloch and they compensated me very fairly. Actually, MORE than fairly. So, thank you guys! Suzette is amazing - she helps find glasses and sunglasses that fit great and are the best possible price. She's always up-front about the cost of each part (lenses, frames, coatings etc) and has helped guide me in what I need and don't really need. I love that honesty. Yikes. It would have saved us some hassle had we read these poor reviews before going in. We tried to give our business here as we live nearby and it would have been convenient for us but poor customer service (unfriendly/rude) and the fact they want the paying customer to deal with insurance., we went elsewhere. STILL HAD MY OLD LENSES AFTER 10 years!! I no longer live in the area, but have relocated to Long Beach. I really miss this place! They are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Definitely the best optometrist I've ever gone to over the years. Almost 10 years ago, they made me some prescription sunglasses, and said they would keep my original RayBan lenses on file in case I ever wanted them. Every time I drive through Carlsbad, now, I wonder if they are still there. Today was the day I had 15 extra minutes to stop by and see. I wasn't sure if they'd even have my file anymore. The lady at the desk got my name, and within 60 secs had my file in hand. She felt the shape of the file, grinned really big, opened it up, and said, "It has been almost 10 years! They're in here! Terrible! I've been wearing contacts for 25 years. Never had a problem, never had a pair I went home in that I couldn't wear until I encountered Dr Bloch! First, if you enjoy the way some doctors completely disrespect your time by making you wait 30+ minutes after your appointment time, this is the place for you! After giving me the completely wrong prescription, I called the next day to tell them I would like to come back in to get it fixed. No return call, they made me wait over a week...just couldn't squeeze me in early but didn't even return my calls to tell me. I show up for the return visit, more waiting. Over 30 min. Dr Bloch argues with me about the prescription he gave me being wrong (obviously he sees out of my eyes better than I do) Prescription STILL not right. 3rd visit, I brought my old prescription to ask for that contact lense. I show up a few min early, I wait 10 min PAST my appt time, and he walks another patient in to START their exam. I left. Won't be back. I would rather pay twice for another doctor to get it right, see me on time, not argue if they screw it up....terrible experience! Don't waste your time or your eyes! read more

One star is too much. These scam artist are unreal. David and his minions run a scam. I literally drove 45min just to go back to my old eye dr. Because this place made me so concerned about ever changing eye dr's. His front desk people are so rude it's amazing to me they're still in business. They kept me waiting over 45 min for my SCHEDULED appointment, and I get stuff happens but then they all acted like they were annoyed that I was unhappy about waiting. To you folks that work there...it's called "resetting yourself for the customer". Don't pass your stress of the previous customer on to the next one. Creepy doctor, he tried to school me on the correct spelling of HIPPA and was very condescending. I took my two daughters to see Dr. Bloch two times and at the last appointment he cleaned the equipment between examining my two daughters' eyes and told my younger one he needed to clean this because "we don't know where your sister's face has been". He then proceeded to ask my children if they shared a bathroom. Dr. Bloch was inappropriate with my children, trying to what I can only guess was supposed to be funny, but really being a misogynist. I was on vacation in the area and lost my glasses in the ocean. I came in an hour before closing to get an eye exam and a few pairs of contacts to hold me over until I got home. Dr. Bloch squeezed me in after his last appointment, and stayed past closing time to see me. It's clear he truly cares about the well-being of his patients. I haven't been to the optometrist in 15 years and had a great experience with Dr. Bloch's office. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and seen by the doctor at my scheduled time. He was very warm, talkative, and overall, I had a pleasant experience. He explained everything to me in detail, giving me the pros and cons of my prescription, and showing me what my problem was on the a handy model of an eye. I did not feel that he was trying to push glasses on me and he even told me I didn't really need them if I didn't feel like wearing them. Never have I ever received such excellent eye care! Dr. Bloch, as well as his staff, took so much time with me to make sure I would be given the right prescription. He not only asked me so many questions, but did some of the vision tests several times to make sure I was comfortable with my vision. He also noticed that I have astigmatism in one of my eyes which no other eye doctor had noticed. Very friendly staff and nice, clean office. The saga continues! I just ordered contacts online at Opticontacts.com and put down Dr. Bloch's office information so they could contact him to verify the prescription. Every single optometrist I have used in the past has cooperated and verified the prescription. OF COURSE Dr. Bloch's office is being difficult. They told the person who contacted them from Opticontacts that they are "too busy to pull my chart" and that their fax machine is broken. Gee, they are too busy to EVER pull my chart? Good thing I'm not too busy to update my review about how terrible this business is. Fortunately I found the written copy of my prescription so hopefully I'll get my contacts. Before visiting this office, there are a few things that you should be aware of: 1) your insurance will probably not cover all or most of the visit and/or glasses or contacts? Why? Because Dr Bloch charges such exorbitant prices... This is what our insurance company said anyway.... 2) Dr Bloch is an adequate Optometrist, but a terrible businessman, and an even worse salesman. He thinks that he is somehow an "all-in-one," "one stop shop," and will literally try to force you to buy contacts or glasses directly from him at 3x the price of Costco. Good luck in getting him to even give you the prescription that you paid for if you dare use 1-800-Contacts, or any other source. Don't believe me?? See other reviews My advice??? Very disappointed with my progressive lenses with Dr. Bloch. I took the prescription I had filled from my long time ophthalmologist for new glasses. When I got them back the far vision correction was very good. The width of the near vision for reading that was in focus; however, was so narrow that I couldn't read a lap top screen or novel without turning my head from side to side. The previous glasses I had where the old prescription was filled elsewhere allowed me to read across the line without turning my head. They did send the glasses back for an adjustment though even while writing this review, as narrow as the box is, I still have to turn my head in order to focus across the line I'm typing. The glasses cost about $720.00. My last pair with the same features and even a scratch resistant surface were about $450.00. I will say the staff, especially, Crystal, was very courteous and professional. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experiences at this office. Dr. Bloch is friendly enough and clearly competent but I don't like the sales pitch I always get. I've always had my insurance pay for everything so never really paid attention but then when a time came where I had to pay out of pocket the office definitely tried to rip me off. Dr. Bloch tried to convince me that his prices were competitive but when I shopped around I got contacts for less than half his price at Costco. I really don't like feeling like I'm being taken advantage of, especially by a Dr. So I'd recommend going here for the exam but take your prescription elsewhere for contacts and glasses! read more

Dr. Bloch SAVED ME! As I was putting my contact lens in this morning it slipped onto the wrong part of my eye and got suctioned to it. I called him at 7:30 am on a Sunday- basically the worst time to ever call anyone. Dr. Bloch BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT I made a single appointment with Dr.Bloch's staff to have an initial assessment made of my daughter's problems related to reading. My 8-year-old Daughter already has reading glasses from a reputable local optician. We came to Dr. Bloch for a Behavioural Ophthalmology assessment to determine what reasons beyond reading glasses or intellect were causing my daughter to have trouble reading. We have been exploring a number of options to help my daughter both at school and privately. After investigating therapy through our medical insurance I found that Behavioural Ophthalmology is not covered by insurance. I stated that I would be paying out of pocket when I made the appointment and needed to know the price. I was told the appointment would be $125 and future sessions would be required for actual therapy. DURING THE APPOINTMENT At the start of the session, Dr. Bloch stated that he would have my daughter reading a college level word by the end of the session. The testing began with my daughter's eye tracking tested by a pair of glasses connected to an antiquated computer, this turned up some useful results related to her eye's ability to track together. My daughter then misunderstood a task on a worksheet due to feeling stressed and uncomfortable. This seemed to annoy Dr. Bloch which escalated the issue. The remainder of the session was spent with Dr. Bloch desperately trying to make my daughter read a college level word from a dry erase board. At no time did I agree to any additional services. There were multiple times when Dr. Bloch pushed for me to pay for additional services, each time I politely declined. 1. He told me I should not use my current Optician they don't know what they are doing, "he wants to do all his own work". "You should pay for an eye exam and new glasses today". 2. I was wasting my time with the extra tests I have scheduled at my daughter's school, "school therapists are clueless" ...I replied that I was having an initial assessment made by a number of different professionals after which I would decide on the best course of action for my daughter..... 3. "How much time do you have today?" ...I replied that I need to get my daughter back to school....(The appointment was 10 am on a Tuesday, during school time) 4. "There are a number of phases to this, what were you looking for?" I replied ...I was told this appointment was $125, I want whatever is included with that..... AFTER THE APPOINTMENT At the end of the appointment, Dr. Bloch gave one folder to his cashier and then whispered in her ear and handed her another folder. Dr. Bloch then left the room to receive a new client. The Cashier stated that the bill would be $250!! (The same cashier had confirmed the $125 price with me over the phone and in person when we arrived for the appointment.) I told the cashier that I had agreed to a $125 initial assent and at no time had I agreed to any additional charges. Dr. Bloch then came out to contest that he had done extra work (??) and that the bill was $250. ...I replied... That was not made clear in any way. I was willing to pay the $125 only... Dr. Bloch conceded and I paid the originally agreed $125 to the cashier. In Dr. Bloch's absence, the Cashier apologized. I asked her if doctor Bloch does this regularly and that I was shocked that he would try something like that. The cashier apologized again and said she was new. THREATENING PHONE CALLS/REGISTERED LETTER Despite expecting the matter to be resolved I have since received two correspondences from Dr. Bloch's Office. The phone call repeated threats of late fees if I do not pay this erroneous additional $125 fee. SUMMARY It was obvious early on that the chemistry between my daughter and Dr. Bloch was strained, I did not want to sign up for any additional services despite Dr. Bloch's repeated attempts to up-sell me. Dr. Bloch is abusing his position to try to threaten me into paying for something I did not ask for or want. Not only did I state this before the appointment at every contact, but also during the session. I have contacted the relevant authorities to have Dr. Bloch delt with appropriately. I strongly recommend you take your business elsewhere. read more

Dr. Bloch is an incredibly nice doctor, and a very thorough one at that. He takes the time to give each patient the attention they deserve, and is complete and thorough in his diagnosis. When I first went to Dr. Bloch years ago, the contacts I was wearing were not appropriate for my condition - Dr. Bloch was able to give me the contacts that helped me see perfectly and in the ensuing years gave my family the same attention. His staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and are always great if I need to go in and have a frame fixed, or if I need another copy of a recipt or prescription. This guy rocks! read more

This is a multi-part review. Please stay with me on this. The first part is about Dr. Bloch. We recently took my three year old granddaughter to see him for an eye exam and he did a wonderful job of testing her, despite her wiggling and short attention span. He really knocked himself out making her at ease, and in the end, I have to say he worked very hard for the cost of that exam. We were quite pleased with him. Sadly, though, we learned the that level of correction she needed, due to some congenital defects, was pretty dramatic for a little girl. I urged my son and his wife to get a second opinion, since it was so severe. This was nothing more than what any parent would want to do in such a situation. Back to Dr. Bloch's exam: after dilating my granddaughter's eyes, he took us out to a woman who was there to sell us eyeglasses. She was loud and behaved in a very childlike manner, I'm sure to try to make my granddaughter feel more at ease. The sales pressure was extreme, and I'm ashamed to say we went ahead and spent almost $600 to get the glasses and exam paid for before leaving. My son and his wife took my granddaughter for a second exam at Rady's Children's Hospital, (where their pediatrician suggested they go in the first place). The exam showed almost the identical results as Dr. Bloch's, but the second doctor recommended starting her off with a little weaker prescription so as not to overwhelm her with such a strong prescription right off. Knowing we'd already paid for the first glasses (which still hadn't been delivered), the second doctor advised them that the first doctor would be obligated to change the prescription. Off they went to Dr. Bloch's office to request the change. My son didn't get to talk to Dr. Bloch, but he did get to meet the woman who we ordered the glasses from. She was very apparently very nasty and offensive about the request, so much so that he just walked back out and went back to the office of the doctor at Children's Hospital. That doctor, an opthamologist, then called Dr. Bloch's office. An hour later, my son was back in Carlsbad where he was treated quite differently. Sadly, yesterday the glasses came in. When my daughter in law went in to pick them up, she asked for any instructions we might need. This same woman was very passive aggressive with her, and in a very sideways way let her know that if we wanted to go to Children's Hospital, then we should just go there and ask them, and not bother to come back to Dr. Bloch. Before I retired, I owned my own very successful business in New Mexico. I know that the success you have is based on your competence and equally as important, your customer service. I think Dr. Bloch is doing himself no good by having a person like this in his employment. I can't imagine, had we had the opportunity to get beyond her and speak with him, that he could have possibly argued with the concept of a second opinion on such a very important health issue. In fact, I wonder if he even has a clue that this has happened. I would give Dr. Bloch five stars; I would give his sales person none. I hope this is the last time this happens to anyone using his services; it turned very ugly for no good reason. Shame on her. read more

Dr. Bloch is very knowledgeable in his field. He provided a very thorough vision exam and was able to identify problems that were interfering with her reading. My daughter's reading improved with new bifocals. On the downside I was very dissatisfied with the billing and medical insurance side of the office. We signed up for the reading program, which was a very expensive program. We asked them to please bill our medical insurance for the vision therapy. They were adamant that insurance would not cover it. I called our insurance and they confirmed that they would pay. I reached out to the office and asked them to request a preauthorization so we would know how much we would be expected to pay. The person in their billing never did that. Instead they decided to have us pay out of pocket and then forward the bill to insurance. So after 4 months of going back and forth about it (and 15 emails later) they ask us to not come back, because we are being too time consuming for the billing person. And BTW our medical insurance did end up covering a portion of the office visit and vision therapy. read more
