Bait and switch! I've been a patient of Dr. Michael Foyle for 30 years and he joined Encinitas Vision with Moffett. Scheduled an appointment and asked the pricing and was quoted $209 "for a full comprehensive exam--out the door". The scheduler even read from my file. Showed up for my appointment 15 minutes early like a good patient and the rude receptionist informed me that contact exams are an additional $85-125. AN ADDITIONAL $125-excuse me, UP TO $125. Well, I knew they were going to bend me over at this point, so you can guarantee it was going to be $125. I didn't have lube so I walked out. read more

Saw Dr Moffet for the first time and was very disappointed with his lack of interest in me as a new patient , the lack of explanation of any of the tests I had, his impatience even though I saw him for less than 15 minutes. He was relieved I had no further questions even though I hardly asked any. I did not ask any further questions because he did not seem willing to give me answers longer than two words and was very impatient. Maybe having a bad day? Should not affect how he treats his patients. The optician was not motivated to help even though she was not busy at all. Only good part of my office visit was the technician who knows what she's doing! Otherwise, Very disappointing!! read more

As a long time patient of Dr. Michael Foyle (35 plus years) I followed him after he merged his Solana Beach practice with Dr. Stephen Moffett and moved his office to Encinitas Vision Optometry. Unfortunately Dr. Foyle did not take his office staff ( Denise, Debbie, and Pamela) with him. After going through my annual eye exam, on July 10th with Dr. Foyle, I was put into the hands of Sydney and Angelica who were to handle my insurance billing with Medicare and my FX Blue Shield supplemental insurance coverage. They billed me even though I explained that I had supplemental insurance that should cover everything but the minimum copay--but I ended up paying the full amount of $310.00. Finally after several weeks I received a voicemail from Sydney saying that I had a $163 credit (versus a refund of the overpayment) due to their mistake of not accepting my FX Blue Shield supplemental coverage in the first place. I accepted the totally arbitrary policy of a credit vs a refund and asked for them to send me additional contact lenses and to apply my credit. I'm currently awaiting (months later) a response to my fifth email and have received neither contact lenses nor any communication. Sadly, my personal decades long experience with Dr. Foyle will not prevent me from giving a one star review to Encinitas Vision Optometry (Dr. Stephen Moffett) and staff--Sydney and Angelica. They deserve no credit for their lack of communication skills in as basic a task as this. Furthermore I will be moving my optometric needs (and referring friends and family) to a more responsive and professional office than Encinitas Vision Optometry. read more

Encinitas Office -- Disappointed in the poor communication. Was not contacted when my contact lenses came in and I had waited 3 1/2 weeks from date of my appointment. Calls to this office are often cut off (staff can't or won't answer), which means I can't leave a voice message. When I was told today that my contacts were in and the office would be open until 4, I stopped by at 11:04 a.m., but the office was locked and dark. I called again and was told Heather would be back by noon. I stopped by again at 12: 35, after making several more calls that were disconnected after one ring. The office was still locked and dark. Phone calls were not answered. I called again a little after 1 p.m. and was able to leave a voice mail. May I respectfully sugggest, when the office needs to be closed during normal business hours, that a note could be taped to the inside of the door with details of when someone may be back, with an apology. Now I have to go another weekend without contact lenses! read more

I urge readers to consider the many 1 and 2 star reviews of this Encinitas practice and of Dr Moffett's other practice in Coronado as well, which mirror my own negative experience. Like several others who wrote, I was a loyal and happy client of Dr Michael Foyle for 35 years in Solana Beach, because Dr Foyle was professional, effective, and caring. By contrast, Dr Moffett is utterly unprofessional, not only because his manner is downright oafish, but because he did a cursory exam (as another reviewer noted) and consequently came up with a prescription that was far off the mark. This was confirmed not only by my inability to see at all through the glasses he prescribed, but by an optometrist I saw subsequently at UCSD's Shiley Eye Institute. Dr Moffett rudely rejected my contention that the prescription seemed off, claiming without re-examining me that my poor eyesight and my progressive lenses (which I've worn for years) were the likely problems. His optician Sandra is pleasant but inexperienced; she proposed with a straight face that the new glasses frame I'd bought was acceptable, though it came back from the lab with a dramatically bowed left temple that could not be adequately adjusted because, given my complicated prescription, the lenses were too big for the frame. Three times in four the staff do not answer the phone to callers, and they never respond to voice messages. A male staff member made a follow-up appointment for me on a given day but failed to enter it into the OD's schedule, with the result that I pointlessly drove 26 miles round trip to the Encinitas office, wasting valuable time in the process. Dr Moffett was present but did not agree to see me. Instead he headed out the door at mid-day without so much as acknowledging his office's error, and I ended up having to wait a total of 12 days for a re-examination. Having met with incompetence at every turn, and having been seen promptly at Shiley, I ultimately asked Dr Moffett for a refund, which he partially granted. (He witheld $185, presumably for the shoddy exam.) The refund totaled $1072 for the prescription lenses and a $250 frame. Note that both of Dr Moffett's offices, in Coronado and Encinitas, list the same hours, M-F from 9-5, though he is the only OD listed on staff at both places. So even his online self-presentation is deceptive. read more

Went here after a poor exam at Stanton optical. Encinitas is not close to me, I'm located in Vista. They accepted my insurance and I have a family friend with the same last name so I picked it despite the distance. It was super easy to set up and intake was quick and friendly. Everyone there was very nice and attentive and they have a nice office with good selection for glasses. I came back a few months later after wearing my contacts and having bad allergies with the lenses since I usually wear glasses. Allergens stuck to the lenses and whatnot. They were very nice about it and suggested a few products to help. It's also by a home goods so that's a big plus too lol read more

My husband went to Dr FOYLE since he was a kid in high school. Foyle's staff was always super friendly, helpful, and kind and it was actually fun to take our kids to their appointments. Since he moved his practice to Encinitas vision it's a completely different experience. The vibe is so weird, the staff is extremely rude, super defensive when I just asked for a written record of my prescription. Sadly we will be looking for a new eye doctor after decades and decades with the wonderful Dr FOYLE. read more

The Doctor rushed through the vision test so fast that it was over after a few minutes. The script he said I needed was blurry, and then when I told him it was blurry, he clicked it down one (which was better but still blurry) and instantly tried selling me on an expensive progressive lenses or said still use my readers. read more

I've been going to Dr. Rosa for as long as I can remember I have referred dozens of people to this office but since it's been taken over by Dr. Moffat the customer service and the attitude of the employees there are so pathetic and rude The only reason I continue to go there is to see the best optometrist in San Diego Dr. Ron Rosa but it's like going through an obstacle course of Bob wire getting through the rude and disrespectful and rude office staff. read more

Hello, I have been going to Dr. Moffett for 4 to 5 years. In my opinion, he is a great Optometrist. He takes his time, is patient, answers all my questions which is why I keep on going back to him. I do have an issue with his billing department. I have caught them twice charging my insurance for the services that they didn't provide and when I went back to their office for additional supply, they told me that I no longer had any allowance left. Fortunately, I was able to contact my insurance and sort it out with them. I recently had an regular exam done there and they charged me additional $69.00 for contact lenses fitting which I believe is preposterous. I just went in for a regular exam which should have been $25.00 and they decided pile on extra fees without my knowledge. It makes me upset that they didn't make me aware of this charge before the exam. Needless to say, I will no longer be going there. I am tired of their additional charges that either come out of my pocket or charge to my insurance without my consent. To all that is reading this post. Once again, Dr. Moffett is wonderful but make sure you are aware of what procedure you are getting done and how much you are getting charged PRIOR to the exams. read more

We have been patients for the past couple of years. The service was not superb but well enough to return for routine eye exams for myself and family. When there became a concern with my 4 years eyesite, I contacted the office to see if they were equiped to handle this age of patient. I was assured that it was fine and to bring him in. My son was very misbehaved, but Dr. Moffet showed no compassion considering his age. At that point, I now know we should have been refered to a pediatric specialist. Instead, he reappointed us for 1 month. When we returned, I brought a friend to help as knowing children, they behave better sometimes for others. After a perfectly good visit, she commented on Dr. Moffet's poor chairside mannor, lack of patience, and expectations for my 4 yr old. He prescribed my son contacts, telling me that was what he would recommend for his child...did I mention he doesn't even have children??? We are now 6 months later. I have taken him to a Pediatric Opthomologist. The prescription that was given was completely incorret and Dr. Moffett missed an eye condition that he had. Had Dr. Moffett realized this was out of his scope of practice, and referred us, we would not have invested in contacts (mind you my son is 4 years old!), glasses, and now the expense of doing the exam all over. The opthomologist said that contacts are the money makers for optomtrist. I now know this to be true after pricing my contacts and my older sons contacts at Costco...there was a $24 PER BOX difference! We as a family, will not be returning, nor would I recommend him to anyone. read more

Dr. Moffett is a nice, patient doctor who is willing to go the extra mile to make sure your Rx is right on. I'll admit to being a pain in the ass patient since I suck at the "which is better, 1 or 2, 4 or 3" tests. Dr. Moffett spent extra time with me to get it right, sent me home with samples to test before I ordered them, and his office called to check up on me a week later. The have a cute welcome board too with all the patients names for the day written on it, which I thought was a nice touch. I like this place b/c of the location, flexible hours (don't have to go during work hours), and the people. I'll be going back. read more

Went to this place for the first time and really enjoyed my first experience. They have a repeat customer. I saw Dr. Rosa who i was super impressed with. Let's be honest, unless you're a dr. or actual optometrist, you have no idea whether they are actually "good dr's". The only thing I can tell you is Dr. Rosa has great bed aide manner. He's a human and easy to talk with and very warm and pleasant. Just connecting with your patient goes a long way... The staff was friendly and professional. It felt like a little community. Dr. Rosa knew two of the other customers waiting in the lobby area when he walked me out and you could tell everyone likes this guy. My only complaint was with one of the machines I didn't see the staff wipe down/sterilize one of the machines. I always like to see them do it before they perform the test on me so I know it's been done (you know those machines where you put your forehead against them and they check your eyes). Your entire face rests against it and I like to see them wipe it right before I use it... it's not to say it wasn't cleaned before hand, I just don't know without personally seeing it. The place was clean so I'm hoping it was cleaned, I'd just recommend you always do it with the patient in the room. Will be a customer in the future! read more

Dr. Stephen Moffett is a great optometrist! He takes the time to answer your questions and he makes sure you get the right fit and prescription. My eyes are very bad -9 and a -7.50 and he fit me with contacts that I can see better than I have ever been able to see out of. I am looking forward to getting my new glasses here as well. The staff here is so friendly and nice! As soon as I walked in the door, I felt welcomed and they were very diligent with getting me the paperwork (painless, just one paper!) doing the preliminary tests and into the doctors office. Dr. Moffett was extremely nice and professional. He explained every eye test, a few of which I never experienced, and gave me a couple different contact lenses to try on. Also, doesn't hurt that there's a cupcake bakery a few doors down. The girls in the office even gave me great recommendations for flavors. All in all, I left feeling happy, healthy and excited to return to pick up my contact lenses. Great people, great practice- highly recommend this optometrist to anyone! read more

I went to Dr. Moffett for both myself and my 7 year old daughter. Both visits went well. I felt like we both had very thorough exams. I didn't know what to expect for my daughter's visit since she's so young, but the assistants were able to make all the testing machines work for her little eyes. Dr. Moffett was able to diagnose a focus problem that Daniel & Davis Optometry (which specializes in pediatric optometry!) did not catch last year. Moffett only wants to MAXIMIZE Profit! Dr. Moffett and Emily Tam are all about the maximizing the billing to each patient by performing as many unnecessary tests as possible (I was given 5 tests plus the eye exam), strongly encouraging you visit every year, and only willing to write prescriptions for 1 year. Dr. Rosa (Former business owner) never took this approach. I walked out the door last week having paid $160. They never once indicated it would be this expensive. They went onto say they billed my insurance another $230 (Hence unnecessary tests)! I do believe they are both quality Optometrists, but be sure to bring your credit card. I strongly recommend you go elsewhere in Encinitas where it's not all about how much money they can make. Disgraceful! read more
