Dr Foster was my guy for glasses for many years. When it came time for cataract surgery, I was told by his office of a new lens called Odyssey IOL , by Johnson& Johnson Tecnis, whereby I wouldn't need glasses for close or far. This has been a nightmare. After the doctor put them in, it affected my night vision whereby i cannot drive at night and affected my contrast close up, whereby I could not do my hobbies or work on projects around the house.. According to literature, the doctor was supposed to do regular checkups during the neuro adaptation period for Monitoring the Tear Film and Ocular Surface, Checking for Posterior Capsule Opacity (PCO), Tracking Refractive Stability, measuring tear stability . He did not. He just said see you next year. I kept waiting for the neuroadaptation to clear up my sight. A lot of stress could have been avoided. It was only after I sought a second opinion after 10 months that I found out about PCO, which makes the lens cloudy. Doctor Foster didn't warn me of this possibility, he just said keep putting in eye drops for your dry eye while neuroadaptation happens . I just had a YAG laser procedure for PCO done and it did not clear up my ability for night driving. Dr. Foster or his office did not warn me about PCO, how my dry eye was going to affect the outcome, did not inform me of many things that caused me high stress and anxiety. My opinion, he is a very callous man with no regard for the comfort of his patients. The anxiety he caused me was a result of this nature. He could have done the advised checkups. Don't listen to his staff in regard to Odyssey IOL unless you do a lot of research. I allowed it to happen to me because of trust. Thought I could trust Davies Eye Group. I was wrong. I don't know if I will ever be able to drive at night at this point, comfortably. I may need special glasses for this. The hook of not needing glasses ever again as a sales pitch..HA! As for my contrast issues, the verdict is not in. I may need glasses for close up, who knows. I won't be getting glasses with Davies eye group. BEWARE THE SALES PITCH for Odyssey IOL! read more

I went to the Davies Eye Center for cataract surgery. This center contracts with the North Coast Surgery Center near Oceanside. There were errors. I reacted to those errors. I cancelled and then ask to reinstated. They refused and dumped me as a patient. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About 3 days before the planned cataract surgery, I got email instructions from North Coast Surgical Center about how to preparer for FOOT AND HAND surgery. This freaked me out because, if they cant get that right, what else are they going to screw up? I called and complained. A nurse called from the surgery center to explain. I also got a voicemail message from Dr. Foster. They are closed on Friday and over the weekend, so i could not talk to anyone. I started digging into available info about the surgery center. Their NEWSWEEK rating for Ambulatory Surgery Centers had dropped from #11 in 2021 to #59 in 2024, by 2025 they had slipped to #63. During this period, they were bought by United Healthcare. I was somewhat freaked out, and decided to cancel,. I tried to provide as much notice as possible, to minimize problems, so sent an email on Saturday to cancel. By Monday morning, I was less freaked out, so called the office to reschedule. I talked to a surgical scheduler/manager, Sherry, who told me, and I paraphrase, that: Dr. Foster did not like me researching information about the surgery center, and no longer wanted me as a patient. My surgery was cancelled. This is not an exact recollection about the cause, but they no longer wanted me. I am going to contact medicare to see whether they can charge if they decide to cancel me. As a patient for eye surgery, I believe that I have the right to gather all available information about doctors and surgery centers. They are working on my eyes and I don't want any problems. As a private practice, they can certainly refuse to treat me as a patient if they want to do so, but I started this investigation because of errors on their part? Why dump me as a patient? read more

I was referred to Davies Eye Center, and Dr. Foster by my optometrist. The cataracts were gradually getting worse and worse to the point where she could not correct my vision anymore. I was so terrified to get this surgery done, but the whole team at Davies Eye Center was absolutely wonderful. Dr. Foster and the surgical counselors Michelle and Sherry assured me that was very easy (and quick) procedure and then I wouldn't even remember once it was done. They were so encouraging and supportive! There is always someone to answer your questions, and are there for you in an emergency, 24/7. I spoke with Jason a few times after hours, who was just awesome, and addressed my concerns. Everyone at the office is top-notch! And of course, I can't say enough wonderful things about Dr. Foster! Wonderful man, and wow, what a skilled surgeon! Turned out, my vision was way way worse than I even realized until after it was done! The best way to put it is that I went from seeing the world through an old color television set with bad reception, to the best sharpest 4K flatscreen TV! I was referred to Dr. Foster in order to evaluate a previous cataract surgery where the lens was not functioning correctly. The entire office staff was warm, helpful and knowledgeable. After meeting Dr. Foster, I knew that I was going to get the help that I needed. Not only did he fix the problem but he also did the cataract surgery in my other eye. My 20/20 vision has returned. I was treated for dry eyes, by having punctal plugs every 3 months. This caused large chalazions on each eye, which the doctor thought were styes. After 3 months, I went to an eye surgeon in Solana Beach, and the chalazion were gone within a week. I do not have dry eye; the problem was multifocal contacts. Be careful about your diagnosis here. I would strongly recommend a second opinion. read more

I had over the top anxiety about having cataract surgery and put off discussing my concerns with Dr. Foster. When I finally did he addressed them all. He was so totally present - he listened fully and offered very detailed answers to my questions. There was no pressure to make up my mind. In response, my anxiety dropped way down and I comfortably decided to go ahead. During the preparations, Sherry's warm and thorough help was so important in arranging the financial plans, and Michelle's kind and patient help made a huge difference in easing the preparations for surgery. Dr. Foster uses the North Coast Surgery Center - the people there are wonderful. I had great experiences with two different teams. Dr. Foster did the surgeries almost a year ago. Everything went well during the surgeries and there have been no issues. What a joy to be able to see without distance glasses! I do wear reading glasses and I'm fine with that. Excellent customer service both, over the phone and in person from the front office staff. In fact, every person from the administration team to the eye exam technician to the ophthalmologist were absolutely wonderful. I spent most of my time with the eye exam portion of my visit as thankfully, I still have 20/20 vision at 45! Yay me! However, the brief time I spent with the doctor was pleasant. He was very kind, thorough and made great suggestions for the slight issues that I have when reading small print, something that naturally comes with age. Alexander Foster is a great opthomalogist. His skills are far superior to our prior eye doctor. He was able to immediately diagnose my real major problems and create a successful treatment plan with great results. I had an incredible LASIK experience with Dr. Foster at Davies eye center. Lasik is something I have wanted for 10+ years but I think like most can relate I was always worried about: 1. Do I qualify? 2. Can I afford it?? 3. Will it work (aka or will it make me go blind)??? They even have special 2 year interest free financing for those unable to pay for the procedure in full. These folks are absolutely the best! I was quite upset to find out that I was developing cataracts before I even reached 50 years old, and this year it got bad enough that I needed to seek help. Dr Foster and the staff were extremely nice and great to work with. I was presented with several options and their pros and cons. I ended up going with the (relatively) new light adjustable lenses, which allow the doctor to adjust your prescription in the weeks following the surgery. The surgeries were a lot easier than I expected, and recovery was no big deal at all. I had a little scratchiness and dryness in my eyes which went away after a couple of days, and that's all there was. When all was said and done, I ended up with better eyesight than I've had since I was a child. My distance vision was amazing right after the surgeries, and after the first adjustment, my near vision became great as well. My vision is better than 20/20 across the board, and I no longer need glasses or contacts - at all! This has been a major quality of life improvement for me, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these folks for anyone else in the same position as I was. read more

I went to Davis eye clinic as Dr. Davies had been referred by my eye doctor. Upon arriving for my appointment to consult for cateract surgery I was given THE MOST through exam EVER! (great staff) Then I was assigned to Dr. Foster. I have to admit I was kind of let down as I thought I was going to see Dr. Davies. After meeting with him and realizing his EXTENSIVE education with every up to date procedure available I decided to go with Dr. Foster. Final result...he is a perfectionist and both eyes came out 20/15 with ZERO issues. Thank you Dr. Foster, I will refer everyone I know that needs eye surgery! read more

Beware of having cataract surgery with Dr. Foster. I had a Sympony lens ( a $4000 upgrade) put in my eye over a year ago. I was told I would have near and far vision with this lens. After several months of my eye still being blurry and no improvement that told me that a Rxsight adjustable lens would allow me to at least see distances. After the second operation and a year later my eye is still blurry and even with glasses. I believe when they ordered the lens the measurements were off and it was never correctable. They rush through taking measurements with different assistants and that could be the problem. Dr. Foster is a good guy but my eye is screwed up and there has been no follow-up on there part. The team and staff are very friendly, helpful and efficient. I appreciate Dr. James Davies for his conservatism, ie ' don't do cataract surgery until it is necessary." He performed a Yag procedure months ago without any complications, and it improved my eyesight in the eye with a Toric lens implanted satisfactorily by an Arizona eye surgeon. I am happy this center can monitor and treat my dry eye condition. I left a former doctor who failed to diagnose me properly. I like the simplicity of Dr. Davies suggesting I have cataract surgery if and when necessary on my other eye using the same Toric lens. You know you can trust someone who advocates what makes sense and is less costly even though it may not have all the bells and whistles! read more

Dr. Davies is a great doctor. He's super informative, one of the few doctors who will answer all your questions. He's very patient as well. Only con is that sometimes I'm waiting a while in the patient room to be seen even with an appointment, hence 4 stars. During the 2 visits, I waited around 30 minutes past my appointment time to be seen. It sucks because to go to the doctor, I have to request time off. read more

I began a frustrating and unsuccessful relationship with Dr. Davies over a year ago. After he performed cataract surgery on both eyes, followed by yag surgery, and finally lasik surgery, my vision remained blurry in one eye. His concern level was just to refer to the next surgery. I was in Dr. Davies' Carlsbad office, and later in his Oceanside office. The front desk was always very professional. In the several visits I made to this office Dr. Davies never called me by name, never knew why I was there, had not prepared himself on my particular case. He had a very thick paper chart and when questioned had to refer to it on every visit several times. My time with him was always extremely brief, my last visit I had several questions left for him as he was walking out of the office and sending in his office worker with books of word searches. I told her I was not finished speaking with him, and subsequently had to wait in the room until he had finished with at least one other patient. He took no responsible for my eyesight not being corrected after all the procedures he had performed. When asked what could be done for my blurred vision in my right eye, he referred again to the word search books (which were first given to me after my original cataract surgery). I asked Dr. Davies what would be done if the books were not effective he did not answer. I also have macular degeneration which we had not discussed since my first appointment which by now was over a year. When I reminded him of this, he flipped in my chart again and said "Oh, we will look at that on your next visit." An excellent opthalmologist was referred to me after this ordeal. She has a small office for herself and one other doctor. As opposed to the factory full of patients Dr. Davies runs. Her testing equipment was almost 100% all done without relying on an assistant's hand- held apparatus. She spends as much time as necessary on my visits, and is fully aware of my situation when she walks in the room, referring if necessary to her wall mounted computer. In two visits, she has corrected the vision in my right eye, and the longer it had gone uncorrected I may have been facing another surgery. She will be seeing me regularly regarding my macular degeneration and shared she will look into clinical trials I may be appropriate for. I am 67 years of age and on the young side to have this eye disease. She has shared everything on her screen in great detail. I have no idea how Dr. Davies has stayed in business, I would never recommend anyone to go to his office. read more

Dr. Davies is nice man, but I needed an attentive physician. His staff was distant. I was to be told about my eye health after other tests by the receptionist who told me to schedule an appointment in 6 months. In the meantime, I found a physician who actually cared about my eye health. ' I cannot recommend this man or his staff. read more

I would highly recommend choosing Davies Eye Center if you are considering getting LASIK or any other eye surgery in my opinion. I went through Davies Eye Center for my LASIK surgery and went from having horrible vision to having 20/20 vision. It is truly mind blowing how life changing this has been for me. I went to my optometrist for a simple eye exam at eye world, which ended up being not bad eye sight but cataracts in bothers eyes, I was overwhelmed with worry when I found out how expensive this surgery is and I didn't want just anyone touching my eye. Dr.Davies came highly recommend!!! My first visit I was greeted so nicely and such a warm and friendly staff was there almost 3 hours but so worth the time. From the receptionist, technician, billing manager to the Doctor all explained every detail so Very Thourgh. I was extremely Happy with my choice to go to Dr.Davies and would recommend his services. I have been a patient of Dr. Davies since the mid 1980's. I have always had excellent care and cannot say enough about the expertise and knowledge provided by Dr. Davies and his staff over the years. Most recently I had RxSight's Light Adjustable Lens cataract surgery. I am very happy with the final results after the surgery and lens adjustments. I have discarded all glasses and am able to read comfortably without them. I also have excellent distance & night vision. The adjustment process over 5-6 weeks was explained fully. Brenda, Dr. Davies assistant that performed all of the vision tests and determined the amount of adjustment needed with each visit was patient and worked with me to achieve the right balance between near and distance vision.
