Both Drs. are extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, and helpful. My only other experience was with the Cambridge Health Alliance for which their Somerville based doctors have a strange system for booking appointments (on the day a week before). In comparison, booking appointments at the Family Medicine @ Ball Square is a breeze. They are open to walk-ins and I have called and shown up as early as 5 minutes later. They also take blood samples and the like for tests on-site, no need to go elsewhere. I have also been taking my 5 month old son (from birth) here and am very pleased with their attentiveness, ease at getting vaccinations and being provided with information, as well as the care of the support staff and nurses. There is very little wait time when going for pre-scheduled appointments. Family Medicine @ Ball Square is part of the Hallmark Health Medical Associates (Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Melrose-Wakefield Hospital) which also provides for a wide range of doctors and services that I have found to be excellent.

This is what health care should look like. Dr. Bershel used to call my elderly father up, way after hours. She also calls me with information, after normal hours. When I had some concerns about numbers in a blood test, they went back over 20 years, combing thru extinct medical records to get the information, which turned out to be very helpful. They go WAY above and beyond. Any one would be lucky to get their care there.

I have to say (based on this brief interaction) that she was as great a doctor as Dr. Barnes. She made me feel comfortable and made sure all my questions were answered. I'm sticking with Dr. Barnes for my PCP but can recommend Dr. Cocoran as well if anyone is looking. Also, I've decided that part of why the visits can take so long here is that they are overbooked (as most doctors are these days) but also that the doctors and nurses really take the time to talk to you and don't rush you through your appointment. It's too bad they can't schedule less appointments in a day. In order to beat this, go as early in the day as you can. My last two appointments have been before 9am and I've gotten in and out in about 45 minutes.

This office is great if the only thing your child ever gets is strep throat. If your child comes in…read morewith a sore throat, they'll diagnose your child with strep throat. If your child has appendicitis, they'll diagnose your child with strep throat. If your child comes back a couple days later because they still have appendicitis and are getting worse, they'll diagnose your child with - you've guessed it - strep throat again. We had an absolutely terrible experience where three different pediatricians misdiagnosed our son's appendicitis over the course of a week. We went in on a Saturday because my son had intense abdominal pain beginning the previous night. Abdominal pain was his only complaint and symptom. We saw Dr Landis and she diagnosed him with strep throat. He had no sore throat and no cough, which was how he presented with strep when he had previously had it. We were surprised considering his symptoms, and my husband even mentioned that we were worried about appendicitis. "No," said a wildly incorrect Dr Landis, "If it were appendicitis, he would not be able to walk." Two days later, my son was not better, instead he still had abdominal pain and was now also presenting with 101+ fevers, not eating, felt achy all over, and was severely fatigued. We tried to get an appointment for someone to see him 48 hours after the initial appointment, but the person answering the phone said no and to give it another day. So first thing the next morning we were back and with these increasingly worsening symptoms, Dr Zeman diagnosed him again with strep throat and changed the antibiotic. Two days later, the office called and said the throat culture was negative for strep (to the surprise of absolutely no one living in our house), and we should come back the next day if he wasn't better. He obviously wasn't better since he had only been treated for a misdiagnosis of strep throat twice. This third time, now a week after his first symptoms presented, he saw Dr Kepler, who at least managed to not diagnose him with strep throat. She suggested a viral source, maybe mono, but at least ordered blood work. Later that evening, the blood work showed he had a raging bacterial infection. After receiving the results of the blood work, she called us and said we should go to Children's ER to figure out the source of the infection. When the PA in the ER asked my son where his pain was, he pointed to his appendix with the precision and accuracy of a fourth year medical student. This ER Nancy Drew ordered an ultrasound, which showed a perforated appendicitis. (Yes, Dr Landis, it turns out you can walk around with appendicitis.) Even if this had been treated more seriously or thoroughly at the first or second appointment at Arlington Peds, I realize we still might not have caught this before his appendix perforated, but my son certainly did not need to get as sick as he became over the course of that week. Not surprisingly, we chose to leave the practice. We are very lucky that our children have been healthy, but in this instance, when we needed a pediatrician to actually listen to our child and see this was a BIG DEAL, we instead received a series of mis-diagnoses, delays, and condescending attitudes.

No treatment for conditions ranging for internal pains, symptoms of arthritis, risk or aortic rupture, or gout were ever recommended. Thousands of dollars in tests were we sent for. No review , feedback, analysis, or recommendations on any of them were ever received. Don't make the mistake of asking an extra question during a visit. You will be billed fully as if it were another appointment. (which your insurance won't cover as they don't understand two sessions with the same doctor on the same day) After 2 years of trying to get any kind of result, we shifted to someone else.

It's a small office, but the receptionist was helpful and friendly. Dr. Mainali himself was very thorough in our first visit, really listening to what we had to say as well as his test results. We felt valued as people, not just as paying customers. He was very helpful when our blood test results came back, in not just telling us the problems, but going through every line of the results (full of acronyms and medical lingo we wouldn't understand on our own) and explaining what everything meant, and why we might care. For many procedures, this small 1-doctor office (he's planning to add a second soon) will have to refer you to others. So, don't expect a hospital-like experience where they can handle everything you could possibly need in the same building. For everything that can be done in-house, though, Everest Healthcare and Dr. Mainali come highly recommended.
