Dr. David F. Chang is the top Cataract Surgeon in California, and one of the top two in America. But also rated as #1 in America in Newsweek. He is so helpful, nice & sweet to Men, and does an excellent job. His favorite is "Surf and Turf"...performing the Alcon brand Vivity in one eye, and Alcon brand PanOptix in the other eye. But you can request one type in both eyes, if you wish. The problem is that he isn't nice to Women, from reading the online reviews....and talking to two female friends who had Cataract Surgery from him...but both had Lasik surgery a few years beforehand, which made the Cataract Surgery much more complicated and less successful. Four days ago Dr David Chang did Cataract Surgery on both of my eyes and implanted LAL Lenses. I had prior eye medical issues that Dr Chang had explained to me on my original Medical evaluation. I was raised with my Blind Father. He lost his vision after an eye procedure so I was very worried about any surgical procedure complications that might have occurred. Now fast forward, except fur some left eye soreness, some Shimmering Light and left eye Stigmatism, I can read all the DMV Eye Charts with both eyes open. I still have to go for numerous LAL Lenses adjustments and hope that they can correct most of my Stigamatism, I can say that I'm seeing better right now than with my prior eye glasses except for my Left Eye Stigmatism. I do use 150 power reading glasses for close up. My ophthalmologist Dr Bruce Kirshner highly recommended Dr Chang.. I've been going to Dr Kirshner for over 49years and respect his medical knowledge and experience...... After the surgery? Dr Chang's office has sent lots of information including videos to my email and I appreciate that But I would have liked a personal call from Dr Chang just as a courtesy support. I saw Dr. Chang in 2011 to inquire about repairing a childhood eye injury. I brought with me a medical journal case study that closely paralleled my history. Dr. Chang reacted with equal parts of astonishment and indignation. "How did you get this [article]?" as if I had just shown him a stolen Van Gogh. He went on to explain in painful detail how, if he operated on my eye, it would go badly. Then he left the room. Gradually I realized that this had been my final cue to leave. I am very emotional as I write this. I owe my vision to Dr. David Chang. I mean this 100%!! I am a little 'slow' in writing this review, because I had my surgery over 1 year ago. I have been a patient at Stanford Eye Clinic for 53 years. They have taken great care of me, but when I was 58 y/o (last year), I was told that I had the cataracts of a 90 y/o person. The Dr's at Stanford were shocked that I still had a drivers license. I laughed and told them; "Yes, I have a auto and motorcycle license". They stated that I may lose my eyesight 'soon', due to my cataracts. I asked if they would schedule me for surgery, but they said that there was a 99% chance that no one at Stanford would touch me, because I am was a VERY High Risk patient. This is when a wonderful Dr. at Stanford referred me to Dr. David Chang. It took a while to get a consult with Dr. Chang, because he is so busy, but I was finally able to be seen by him- I was extremely nervous that he would deny my surgery. Well, after examining me he said "Let's schedule you ASAP". I am a 225 weightlifter and I like to think that I am 'macho', but I cried like a baby upon hearing this. Far more expensive than originally communicated but performance of the medical team was first class. Dr David Chang clearly laid out the strengths and weaknesses of each possible approach to cataract surgery. I selected the higher cost Vivity multi-focal lenses (they will be with me for the rest of my life). I was told to expect slightly less than perfect vision at the furthest distance, perfect vision at mid distance as well as for the computer, and that I would need reading glasses up close for the first time in my life. Post-surgery, this is exactly what I ended up with. Clearly communicated and delivered as promised. But on the billing side, a very nasty surprise. During the pre-op visits, I was told to expect to pay $2,800 per eye ($5,600 in total) based on typical insurance reimbursement rates. In reality, I paid over $8,700. What was the biggest gotcha? Out of network costs. I was smart enough to ask Dr Chang's office in my first scheduling call whether they were "within network" for my insurance (United Healthcare). They said yes. But they never communicated that the surgical center used was not associated with them and that they were NOT within network. And therefore insurance paid a much lower percentage. Beware! read more

I have had eye issues since the age of 2, severe myopia and developed early cataracts. Due to various issues my case was considered complicated and I had seen surgeons in London, and Texas to assess. As a physician, the surgeons hands are of utmost importance and Dr. Chang consistently is considered the very best for high risk cataract surgeries. Though he lowered my expectations due to my baseline issues going into the surgery, he ultimately corrected my vision to almost normal in my left eye, my right eye also is pretty darn good. I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes performed by Dr. David Chang.  The entire experience from setting appointments, consultations, surgery and recovery was excellent.  The entire staff, including the excellent optometrist Dr. Yamanishi, medical assistants, and office staff were friendly, engaging, responsive, timely, professional and efficient.  In fact, thanks to Dr Chang and his staff, this was the best overall outpatient experience I've ever had anywhere.   I went to Dr. Chang for cataract removal because I have some underlying optical conditions and Dr. Chang has dedicated his practice exclusively to cataract issues - I think he's probably seen it all.  I wanted to maximize my chances for a successful outcome and that's what I got.  I recommend Dr. Chang for anyone facing cataract surgery, especially those with underlying conditions. read more

My wife had a cataract surgery on her right eye in Match of 2021 performed by David Chang. She had a cataract surgery on left eye last year by another doctor. So we have some comparation. Before the surgery, even the right eye had cataract the reading was Ok without a reading glass. Now after two months she has to use a glass for reading and far sight is OK. The most bad thing is about the charge. Before the surgery the doctor gave a price and told us that you paid more 2K and the rest would be paid by medicare B and your supplement. So we paid our share and performed the surgery. The bad thing is they charge more than the medicare B allowed, so we have to pay much more than they told me before surgery. The worst thing is that we are involved in the payment loop. The medicare B and supplement paid four check to me and I paid to doctor's office. I got very confusion and asked their office. They just push me back and forth as a ball to Medicre B and supplement company and did not want to tell me the real real reason is that they charge more than the medicare B allowed!! Last year when my wife had the left eye cataract surgery, total our share to pay and we paid, then the rest was handled by medicare B and doctor. It was no thing to do with us!! I will pay what they ask us to pay, but I want to see as a doctor's reputation the honest is more important. Wish he had told me before surgery that the dryness of my eyes could affect the subsequent fine tuning of vision. The Good: He's a fab MD. Gave me latest greatest lens replacements, more complicated after LASIK 20 years ago. Also good: Lovely listening optometrist woman, good complement to the doctor. Less good: Mine was a new lens and protocol. With BOTH EYES SAME TIME surgery, and $10K, I expected to be able to consult the doc the next day. Not allowed! I could NOT see well, and it was both eyes. NOT like old way, where you hear everyone say it was easy. I was quite upset for a long time. Let's hope Dr. C. adjusts the process for when he does both eyes at the same time. Also, see Dr Fishman, MD in Palo Alto before and during your cataract process. He's like a good vision psychologist helping you deal with needing detailed info about YOUR needs in vision. Also, after LASIK plus cataract surgery, dry eyes are likely more bothersome. See Dr. Fishman, too. 10 months later, I'm OK with it all, but it's taken awhile. NOT as easy as expected. HEADLINE: If you need eye surgery beyond LASIK, come to Dr. Chang! I went to Dr. Scott Hyver hoping that he could fix my right eye's prescription with Wavefront LASIK. After his thorough examination, he advised me that I wasn't a candidate for LASIK, but that the root of my vision problem was actually a cataract!!! He referred me to a Dr. David Chang in Los Altos as a highly reputable cataract surgeon, and am I ever glad he did!!! It took 4-5 weeks to get my consult scheduled, but after a very thorough two hour exam, it was indeed confirmed that my right eye had a cataract, and he spent a good half hour with me personally going through the various lens alternatives for my individual needs and life style. Being an avid competitive tennis player, especially in evenings under the lights, I wanted to be able to optimize my vision for long and intermediate distances. If I could have that, I'd be happy to have to deal with reading glasses for up close vision. Based upon this, he recommended the Cyrstalens implant which actually has a design to let it flex slightly ... just like your natural lens does. The lens enables the eye's natural focusing muscles to cause some flexing and movement of the lens, thereby adjusting the focus. Now this particular lens is not covered entirely by insurance like the monofocal lenses, but I thought ... what the hell, I'm worth the extra money. Long story short, I had my procedure yesterday, went in for post-op review first thing this morning, and raced through all the eye charts top to bottom ... absolutely freakin' amazing in terms of being able to do this, less that 24 hours after the operation. Before the procedure, I couldn't even read the first chart!!! I'm sure, I'll update this again in a few weeks, but I am ecstatic over my results in the very short term. In addition to the lens replacement, Dr. Chang also took the opportunity to correct an astigmatism with some laser ablation at the same time ... I'm sure that has helped with my results as well ... Harvard-educated, Clinical Professor of Opthamology at UCSF, copious awards and achievement certificates on his office wall, very professional ... excellent explanations and disclaimers of what to expect ... 24 hours in, and I'm absolutely delighted with the results. And, let's face it, these are my eyes!!! ... I honestly can't think of anything as important from a lifestyle perspective to take care of. Dr. Chang is the undisputed cataract king!! I had a trauma cataract in my right eye, as a result of a tennis ball injury. The surgery was tricky since I had just completed retina surgery, to fix a retina tear. With the volume of surgeries Dr Chang does weekly, he assured me that he was averaging one trauma cataract a week - that experience was very reassuring. He provides lot of handouts and CD-ROM, explaining the cataract procedure in detail. Since he does a LOT of surgeries, he cannot and does not spend a lot of time with you answering your every question. But that is a small trade-off when you are getting treatment from the king! And he takes the extra effort to work with your insurance company so the resulting cost to you is reasonable. My cataract surgery was in 2007 and I am grateful to him for good vision. read more

I had a difficult situation with one eye with a cataract that was a result of a racquetball accident from years ago. I discovered that Dr Chang is a cataract specialist that teaches, works for with the FDA for work relating to new items to the market, and works on patients that had cataract surgeries with other doctors that have gone bad. She was GREAT!! I am loyal to her now even though she is far from me. Dr. Yamanishi totally inspected my eye and told me exactly what she saw in my eye and her concerns - Corneal neovascularization. I sleep with contacts - not good. I walked out of the office with 3 different prescriptions (3 different types of lenses) so that I could test out which one I felt most comfort with and then order my boxes after I figured out which ones were best for me! I had cataracts for over five years and dreaded cataract surgery because it has a 95% success and I might be the 5% with complications. After not being able to drive for three years and not able to recognize faces 20 feet away - I decided to opt for cataract surgery. Dr. Chang performed the surgery on both my eyes two weeks apart April 2019 and the results were spectacular - I can see at almost 20/20 vision the day after surgery, plus the colors were amazing. When I found out I needed cataract surgery, my optometrist had no hesitation in recommending Dr David Chang as the best surgeon in the area. By chance, I was at a party a few weeks later when I got chatting to a Stanford professor of ophthalmology. He also, without hesitation, named David Chang as the best in the business. So I felt good with my choice, Subsequently, Dr Chang performed the lens replacement on both my eyes. The procedure was quick and painless, and I am absolutely delighted with the results - I now have better than 20/20 vision in both eyes and really have no need for glasses at all (I do keep a pair of off-the-shelf readers to hand for really close-up stuff but rarely need them). Some small issues - I do get the halo effect from car headlights when driving at night. Also, I do occasionally get dry eyes (easily remedied with over-the-counter eye drops). But both of these are really nothing compared to the wonderful gift of perfect vision. Re: Dr Chang - I might note that his bedside manner is somewhat brusque. He's a busy man and sometimes needs to slow it down. But just push back a little - make sure he answers *all* of your questions and all will be well. DR. david Chang is a miracle Man! Three doctors , two from Stanford were reluctant to perform this complex cataract, glaucoma surgery. I am 85 years of age and have psuedoexpholiation besides glaucoma week zonules, and a dense large cataract. Many things could go wrong that might create blindness during the surgery... However, Dr. David Chang was NOT reluctant to do the surgery. He has experience in cases more difficult than mine. To get to the surgery, first dr. C hang got me a cancellation so I had the surgery one week after I saw him. He has written a book on cataracts and gave me the book to read besides explaining what he would do . Dr. CHANG removed the cataract and put in a TORIC LENS which helps me see better, my vision without glasses BEFORE THE SURGERY WAS 20-400. He also knew how to put a ring around the weak capsule to support the capsule that holds the lens so the lens WOULD NOT FALL OUT LATER AND CAUSE BLINDNESS, Which can happen if support is not given to a weak capsule! Next, Dr.CHANG put a ISTENT in my eye to lower my high IOP. Pressure from glaucoma. My pressure without medicated eye drops, 3 a day, was about 30. Too high ,about 10 to 15 is okay). Now my pressure with the ISTENT is 4 and may go up alittle later on, awesome! After the operation I went to a restaurant and had a big bowel of minestrone soup an French bread and butter with my husband who drove me for the operation. Did not need a Tylenol or any pain medication, did NOT WEAR A PATCH OVER MY EYE, MY EYE LOOKED NORMAL! ( eye alittle sore but that is all). Next morning I drove myself to the Doctor office for post operation exam. GOOD REPORT, AND DR. CHANG WAS SO MODEST ABOUT THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE, INCLUDING PUTTING THE "RING SUPPORT " AROUND THE CAPSULE HOLDING THE TORIC LENS... I can SEE WELL, I AM SO RELIEVED AND GRATEFUL TO DR. One of the best ophthalmologists in the world. My Grandmother in her early 80s had cataracts removed from both of her eyes by Dr. Chang. So what actually happens during a cataract surgery? The surgeon removes the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy and replaces with an artificial lens. The result was perfect. She had the left side removed first & it took only 15mins & was painless. Her eye did not even turn red & she can see clearly right away. The second time was even better since she didn't even know that she went through the surgery bc it was done so fast & flawless with same result. The procedures on both eyes were absolutely painless. I went to Dr. Chang's office yesterday for a preliminary consultation. I had researched him before hand and had developed a great admiration for his work in the USA as well as in Africa. I recognize the amount of work and dedication utilized in a lifetime to become one of the top cataract surgeons in the world! That is an amazing endeavor that few people can accomplish. I was, however, a bit nervous because of some negative reviews I had read about his bed side manners. Let me reassure you, Dr. Chang was very polite and nice. He explained everything to me clearly and allowed me time to ask questions. His staff was charming and cheerful. I felt very welcomed and comfortable. Knowing of his incredible expertise in the subject of cataracts and of his dedication to his patients, I feel like I was blessed to have found him. I had cataract surgery about a year and a half ago. Prior to the surgery I had (absent the cataracts) very good close up vision and had never had to wear glasses to read, check labels, check caller ID etc. While Dr. Chang did give me a choice of how I wanted to see after the surgery, it was explained very early in the process and I followed the suggestions of the doctor and his staff. I can no longer see up close at all, and am constantly putting on and pulling off either reading glasses or the prescription glasses in order to read anything at all. The glasses don't help other than to magnify the printing, but the words are still very blurry. This condition has definitely lowered my quality of life and I wish that something can be done, but apparently not. I have expressed my displeasure to Dr. Chang, but when I did his manner was antagonistic. My advice is make no decisions until you are entirely sure of what you want, and when they tell you you will need glasses for reading, assume that means you need glasses to read EVERYTHING. read more

A mild cataract that suddenly worsened brought me to Dr. David Chang, who was recommended by my retinal specialist. Even though I live over an hour away from Los Altos, the recommendations for Dr. Chang were so positive, I decided to see him. Our first appointment was strange. After being tested by a number of perfectly friendly people on his staff, I was surprised by his demeanor. He seemed a bit robotic with a thin demeanor of friendly "bedside manner." He asked if I had questions. I asked him what the tests showed about my cataract. He responded that he thought I had come for cataract surgery, but if I wasn't sure, I could go home and think about it. I was surprised by what seemed like his hostility. I assured him I had come for cataract surgery and asked if the lens he put in would correct for distance, near sight, or both. He said most people chose to correct for distance, but he could make it for near sight. His tone suggested that would be a dumb idea. As I started to ask my next question, he said with obvious irritation that I seemed to be asking the same question over and over again. I was dumbfounded. I said it seemed like we had gotten off on the wrong track and I'd like to start over again from scratch. But he would have none of it. I hesitantly asked a few more questions about the implant and my astigmatism. Then, importantly, I asked him what the outlier side effects of this surgery could be. He said the surgery is very straightforward, the only negative being infection which wouldn't happen if the patient followed the post-operative protocol. "Any more questions?" he asked with the tone that suggested I had already asked too many. I didn't press the unintended side effects question because by now I was so uncomfortable with his demeanor that I just wanted the appointment to be over. I assured him I'd read the book he had written for his patients. Although I was tempted to never come back, I ended up with the scheduler. She was very engaging and told me that I could schedule surgery in 3 weeks. This was much sooner than I could have scheduled with my local ophthalmologist and my cataract was very advanced, so I took the appointment and thought maybe I could use that three weeks to find another less alienating surgeon closer to home. When I couldn't, I kept reminding myself of Dr. Chang's great reviews and the many many plaques distinguishing his work that hang on the walls of his exam rooms. I recognized I didn't have to like him to nevertheless benefit from his technical expertise. The surgery center staff and process were great. The only odd moment was the appearance of Dr. Chang who whisked into the prep room, said hello and stuck something on my forehead. I have no memory of the surgery itself. When the post op blurriness subsided, in about 48 hours, I was troubled to have very altered eyesight. My eyes didn't seem to be working together and the effort to focus was exhausting. Nothing looked normal. My depth perception was so impaired I had to hold onto walls or furniture to walk. I had a ferocious headache almost instantly after waking up that never abated until I went to sleep. I felt nauseated and completely disoriented. Nowhere in Dr. Chang's book does he mention this possibility. After a few days, I called his office, but was only able to relay my concern via a receptionist who wasn't helpful. I decided to make an appointment in a week, hoping things might have improved by then. They hadn't. I went to his office, but never saw him. His ophthalmologist, Dr. Yaminichi, examined me, said the lens was properly positioned, that occasionally patients have problems like mine, and that it would probably improve. I felt like my life was wholly altered, so her casual response made me feel like I was alone with my hellish problem. In the six intervening weeks, my headaches have subsided, I'm not nauseated, my brain approaches stereopsis with less effort, my right eye sees quite well with my left eye closed. I can function with relative normalcy but I still can't tolerate going into markets or places with florescent light. I am hoping for complete recovery, but I seem to be on a 70% improvement plateau right now. I went to see Dr. Chang last week for the post op exam. This time he presented as friendlier but had no idea about the horrific aftermath I have experienced. My chart just said "headaches." When I described my symptoms, he said my experience was "extraordinary." That was it. No question, no curiosity. No need to see me again. Indeed, my experience with Dr. Chang has been extraordinary. An experience I would not wish on almost anyone. read more

Every patient heals differently so would have expected better aftercare and follow up after the surgery. I had a very disappointing result with Dr Chang when the wrong size lens was implanted. Vision worsened and changing lens is a risky venture. It's important to get the correct lens the first time. I had hoped my eyes would work together but they no longer do. Driving is challenging as one eye is distance and the other very near sighted. The only corrective option is lasik but I have thin corneas which means 3 months of healing time. Dr Chang's book is informative, he is a busy doctor but the correct lens would have saved me much distress. read more

I was referred to Dr Chang by my regular eye doctor - he replaced both cataracts with UV lenses and fixed the astigmatism in my right eye. I'm 20/20 in that eye now. Dr. Chang was also the doctor who found out the association of a prostate medicine Flomax and its effect upon some defects (iris flapping) of cataract surgery. The uItimate eye surgery experience, if you have to have it done. I had a bad experience with RK surgery in 1992 which caused my eyesight to go from being nearsighted to farsighted with a lot of astigmatism requiring me to wear contacts to be able to have adequate vision. Finally in 2012 my cataracts became significant enough that I needed and qualified for cataract surgery. In April I had cataract surgery on the left eye & couple of months later the right eye by Dr. Chang. He was very candid with me about the issues that the RK causes and what results I could expect from the surgery. Over the next several months to my suprise my eyes have continued to improve to the point where I can now qualify for a drivers license without glasses and I can read without glasses/contacts which I couldn't do since the RK surgery 20 years ago. The surgery has exceded anyexpecations/thoughts I had on how good my vision would improve. I can see colors better and in low light conditions, which when you are in your seventies becomes an issue. If you have had eye surgery like RK or Lasik and need cataract surgery you should have Dr. Chang at the top of your list to see. His office operation and staff are A+ and the supporting O.D. I had been assigned to Dr. Sheri Yamanishi is the best an extremely patient with someone with the obstacles the surgery had to overcome. I have just completed having cataract surgery on both of my eyes and could not be more pleased with the results. I can drive, read a menu, recipe and price tag all without glasses. Dr. Chang is such a wonderful doctor. On his website there is a video about what you can expect during surgery. He has also written a book that covers every detail about cataract surgery. Dr. David F Chang is truly amazing! He is a clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCSF.He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco. My experience was truly amazing. The staff on 762 Altos Oaks Drive is professional, friendly and on the ball. It is run like a well oiled machine. I just recently completed having my 2 eyes implanted with multi-focal lens. It was done at the Penninsula Eye Surgery Center on El Camino in Mountain View. The staff there was absolutely as close to perfection and you can imagine. For those how haven't heard about this procedure, it is an lens implant that is permanent. It is based on computer calculations and hopefully will decrease your dependence on glasses for us older citizens. I had been to 2 other Dr.'s and no one had suggested this procedure. Dr. Chang does more of these than any other Dr. in the state of California. It was a 4 star experience and I would recommend Dr. Chang and his staff very highly. I just read about him on the internet and I thought his resume spoke for itself. Bravo Dr. Chang and staff. You are as professional as professional can get.
