Let me share my experience with you. I did my PRK over 5 years ago. Upon the evaluation of my eyes, PRK would be more appropriate for me, instead of LASIK ( you can check online what's the difference). It's been over 5 years, from age 32 to 37 my vision stays the same. I'm a little more sensitive to glares at night, but it doesn't bother me since I don't usually drive at night. Due to work, I have to stare at my computer for over 8hours daily. Every time I do sports or go traveling, I'm so grateful that I did the surgery. Thanks, Dr. Manche. My coworker did the same surgery at the same time with a different doctor, this doctor's commercial is everywhere, even on the radio, he also has high review on Yelp. They quoted my coworker almost $2000 cheaper. But the surgery result was very different. My coworker suffered a lot after the surgery, way more pain and red eye, when I have recovered she was still following up with the doctor because left and right eye visions were different. If you are a female patient, please be extremely cautious before seeing Dr. Edward Manche. After my surgery on March 13, during the follow-up eye check appointments on March 14, March 21, and July 2, every time the consultation ended, he could not control himself from putting his hand on my back and then stroking down my back while "escorting" me all the way out of the clinic. This happened again and again, despite the fact that I had already made it absolutely clear before my very first visit that I do not want any physical contact outside of medical necessity. How many times does a doctor need to "forget" a patient's explicit boundary? Even worse, during every single follow-up appointment after the surgery, he repeatedly asked me questions that no doctor should ever ask in a medical setting, such as: "Are you happily married?" "Do you truly love your husband?" "When did you two get married?" "Do you have disagreements in your marriage?" "Is your husband supportive of you?" Tell me, is this what Stanford Health Care calls "reducing patient anxiety"? If so, should male supervisors also ask their female staff about the details of their marriages to "help them relax"? Would anyone in their right mind think this is normal? This was not medical care. This was a physician misusing his position to cross boundaries again and again. The outcome of my PRK laser eye surgery has certainly been life changing! I have the best vision that I have ever had in my entire life! Was it worth the price and recovery process? Absolutely yes! The freedom that I have now to not worry about glasses or contacts is wonderful! It's one less thing to worry about when swimming, surfing, camping, wearing sunglasses, etc... I visited you several years before that to discuss improving my vision, but decided it wasn't worth the risk. I could continue wearing prescription sunglasses when I was windsurfing, kitesurfing, snowboarding, skiing. But then, I took my first wave. It was one of those "bucket list" things... The staff is EXTREMELY friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The process is so easy 1) if you go in for a consultation and you're serious about lasik or any surgery they offer DO NOT WEAR CONTACTS A WEEK BEFORE YOU GO (the reason: you can get your eyes dilated but only if you have given your eyes a rest for one week. No contacts) 2) after the consultation and dilation process you can make your appointment. I got my pre op appt on a Tuesday and was in and out of surgery on Wednesday!!! Don't be concerned, but be excited. You are a few steps away from leaving your contact lenses and glasses behind. As soon as you step into the eye institute, you are in good hands. All the staff members in Dr. Manche's office are very warm and welcoming. That really helps putting me at ease. The LASIK procedure that I went through was very straightforward and quick. I had PRK surgery less than a week ago, and I am amazed at my new vision! PRK recovery varies by person and usually takes longer than LASIK, so I'm fortunate to see results so quickly. That said, I highly recommend Dr Manche if you plan on having laser eye surgery. The whole experience was a breeze, I had my pre-op and operation on consecutive days, which is really convenient. Dr. Manche prepared me well for the PRK recovery process, describing exactly when there might be some pain and how my vision may be blurry the first few days. I'm also glad that Dr. Manche told me LASIK was too risky in my usecase. I was initially disappointed, but you want an eye surgeon who will be conservative and look for best long term outcomes, not someone who wants to please the patient. Jen has been nearsighted since 2nd grade, with eyeglass prescription stabilizing at -8.xx as a young adult (everything more than 4 inches beyond her nose were blobs of color). Following a recommendation by a co-worker, she underwent the thorough laser correction candidate testing at Stanford Eye Laser Center in 2019, and then LASIK procedure last year. The day after the procedure, her vision was tested to be at 20/20 and still is a year later. No pain medications were needed apart from the numbing eyedrops used during the procedure. VSP did not cover this so we maxed out each of our FSA contributions in preparation, which covered the full cost of both eyes with a bit left over for other medical/dental expenses the rest of the year. Now Frank wants to do it too, so we expect to be maxing out next year's HSA & FSA contributions for his turn. read more

Dr. Manche and his technicians are incredible. I first had my consultation and testing appointment combined. I would highly recommend doing this as you don't drive twice to appointments and you can know right then and there if you are a candidate for Lasik, PRK or SMILE. The first combined appointment lasted about an hour and a half. Dr. Manche reviewed all the scans and let me know that Lasik was the best option for me. He thoroughly walked me through all the risks and potential side effects. He made me very comfortable and I was excited for Lasik. I was able to schedule Lasik for just one week after my initial appointment at 3:20pm. The appointment was quick, easy and painless. They take you to a first room where the laser is 16 seconds and it cuts the flap of your eye. Then you are guided to a second room where the laser works its magic. The laser lasted 18 seconds for the second room. All in all, the actual "surgery" is less than a minute. The total time in the rooms was about 10 minutes. No reading or screens until the next morning so prep some podcasts! Dr. Manche was very kind throughout the procedure and gave guidance on what was happening at each step. I had my post-op appointment the next day at 8am which I drove to myself. Confirmed 20/20 vision!!! Recovery time was so short (Thursday 3:20pm - 8am next morning) and I had zero pain. I can see clearly now...the glasses are gone I can see alll obstacles in my way Gone are the pitiable looks that had me sad It turned into a bright (bright), bright (bright) Sun-Shiny day. Nearly a decade ago, I had heard of the then-revolutionary practice of eye laser surgery. At the time, I was wearing a heavy pair of glasses for thirty years fulfilling the perfect image of the mathematically-inclined Asian nerd complete with plastic nose protectors and a slide rule. I think I had sand kicked in my face...and I wasn't even at the beach. When I decided to have my eyes assessed and then operated on in early 1998, I wanted to go to the best. Dr. Edward Manche is that person. He and his staff calmed my nerves and set my expectations correctly. I am not sure what the procedure is like now, but I even had to wear plastic goggles on my eyes for a week to ensure there would be as little exposure to my eyes afterward. When they came off, there was a visceral moment of visual clarity that I will remember for the rest of my life. For about a month afterward, I did have the halo effect when driving at night, and that did concern me. But then it went away, and when I saw Dr. Manche six months later, my vision was even better than 20/20. I have never looked back....pardon the pun. I went to the Stanford Medicine Eye Institute at Stanford and saw Dr. Manche for LASIK. Setting up an appointment was easy and staff worked with my schedule to find an appointment that worked for me. After my full eye exam Dr. Manche let me know that I was not a good candidate for LASIK because of the shape of my eyes but that I was for PRK surgery which would give me the same great results but had a longer recovery time. I went ahead and had PRK surgery in November of 2020. Everything went great! Within a year of post PRK surgery I had appointments to check my eyes every visit was great the staff and Dr. Manche are very friendly and at every visit Dr.Mache would take the time to explain what's going on and answer all my questions. I saw three other Lasik Surgeons before I decided to go with Dr. Manche. I was looking for someone who really understand eyes and how vision works. Dr. Manche and his assistant demonstrates that. I went on my own on surgery day and for that reason I wasn't given any sedatives. I didn't need it. Dr. Manche and his assistant put me at ease. I dreaded the part where the cornea flap had to be manually lifted (big fear of needles) but I felt safe under Dr. Manche's hands. It was painless. And the next morning when I woke up.... Wow, for the first time in years, I could see everything in my room so clearly without glasses or contact lenses. I looked around and I literally wanted to cry and give Dr. Manche a hug and thank fun for giving my vision back. Today is Day 4. So far no side effects apart from some dryness (no worse than contact lenses dryness and the difference is that it eases with rest). My vision is still not quite 20/20 (maybe 20/25), but my starting point was low (very high prescription). I would say my vision quality at the moment is equivalent to that when I was wearing contact lenses, still a little lower than when I was wearing glasses. But it's only day 4 and hopefully it will keep improving. I no longer need glasses or contact lenses. I have taken my new eyes on the road this weekend! I'm grateful every morning when I wake up, seeing the world so clearly without glasses or contact lenses. Life changing and worth the $$$$! I am beyond happy! It's been a year since my PRK surgery. I have had astigmaticism and near sightedness in both eyes since I was in 2nd grade. I've worn glasses for 1-2 years and switched to hard contacts for the majority of my life until my eyes started getting pink/red due to too much contact wear so I switched to glasses within the last few years and only wear soft contacts when I want to dress up. I'm always losing my hard contact lenses and paying a hefty price each time to replace. Dr Manche told me there's 3 kinds of methods: LASIK, PRK, and SMILE. I decided to go with Dr Manche because my bro had already did much of the research and he already decided to go with him. Both my bro and I were a fit for the PRK procedure and LASIK, but Dr Manche suggested PRK was better. We went with PRK because we didn't want to cut a flap in our eye and risk getting dislodged if an accident happened. Dr Manche and his staff did not advertise or push me to get the surgery done. The healing process for PRK was longer than LASIK AND it hurt really bad if I did not take the Vicodin. The surgery itself wasn't painful and only 10-15 mins. Dr Manche would tell me exactly what he was doing during the entire process. I took Vicodin for a few days, whereas my bro only took Advil. Dr Manche did mention that I wouldn't feel pain until a couple of days after. Everyone's pain level is different, so advil didn't work for me. My eye was very dry during the healing process, but after more than 6 months, the dryness improved plus I already had some dryness due to prolonged contact wear. About 60-70% of my vision came back to me right after the surgery. Things looked were blurry so I couldn't drive for 2 weeks but attempted to drive only to places I know well. I was prescribed 2 kinds of eye drops during the healing process. But after 2-3 months, my vision started getting better and about 6 months+, I was 20/20 or better. Within the year of surgery, I've had to go back to several post surgery appointments (the day after post surgery, 4 days, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month and 1 year post surgery appointments. No more required appointments after 1 year unless there's an issue. After a year, my right eye is still better than 20/20 and my left eye is 20/20. I can see a bit of astigmaticism when I look at captions on the tv, but doesn't bother me as long as I can see clearly 24/7! When I went to see an eye specialist for an eye issue, he complimented that my eyes barely had any scarring. Thank you, Dr Manche! read more

I've been nearsighted since 5th grade and been wearing glasses almost exclusively for the last 10 years due to contact lens-related dry eyes. I've long been curious (and tempted) by LASIK, but fear of being awake during the procedure and potential side effects kept me from ever seriously considering it. This changed when my husband decided to serve as a guinea pig and got it done in early January. The morning after the procedure, he excitedly told me it was the best decision he'd ever made and that I needed to schedule my consultation. The fact that Dr. Manche is highly regarded also made going forward easier. I combined my 1st (determines whether you're a LASIK candidate) and 2nd (takes detailed and specific measurements of your eyes) consultations into one session and happily scheduled my procedure. As others have mentioned, Dr. Manche and his staff are incredibly warm and friendly on top of being super patient with all my questions. I'm now 3 days post-op and am so thrilled to SEE again! I have a little bit of eye dryness as expected, but this should ease up over time. Honestly, even if it doesn't, using eye drops is a small price to pay for 20/20 vision. After much deliberation I chose to go with Dr. Manche. There are many reputable services in the Bay Area, and I visited with many (including Scott Hyver, and Pacific Vision Institute). I am sure you can get great results many different places, here is why I choose Dr. Manche: 1) The Stanford Laser Eye center seemed the most credible. It seemed most like a medical facility, which is what I was looking for. The others either seemed like an impersonal cosmetic surgery clinic or a factory churning out as many procedures as possible. 2) There are two competing technologies for laser eye surgery: VISX and Alcon. Every place you go is going to tell you that their system is the best. What they don't tell you is that most facilities have only one of these technologies. Dr. Manche has BOTH. So based on my specific condition, he selected the system he felt would get better results. 3) Dr. Manche does ALL of the pre-work and follow up work himself, it's not done by assistants. At all other facilities hand you off to an assistant for you post care work. This doesn't matter so much for LASIK but for PRK (which has lots of follow up) it is very important. 4) Dr. Manche is the most accomplished practitioners I found. He has done a ton of academic research on outcomes for specific technologies. This communicates to me that he is genuinely interested in advancing outcomes in the field. I am sure he could make a lot more money for himself packing his schedule full of procedures but he chooses otherwise. 5) He's a likable guy, no high pressure sales tactics. 6 Months after PRK my vision is fantastic 20/15 in both eyes, no complications. I'll leave the description of the LASIK process to the other reviews because it's pretty much the same for everyone. But some of the things that I would like to point out: - Dr. Manche is definitely on the conservative side of doctors (which is what you want). My friend went to Dr. Manche and Scott Hyver and Scott Hyver told my friend she was eligible for PRK while Dr. Manche said that she was not eligible for any kind of corrective laser surgery which is a red flag for Hyver!! If you're shopping around for LASIK doctors definitely get multiple opinions and make sure they all say you're eligible before proceeding and I trust Dr. Manche the most because he is the most conservative. - Dr. Manche and all of the staff are extremely knowledgable and friendly. I felt very comfortable throughout the whole process from the screening to the post-op and knew I was in good hands. And now I have 20/20 vision! I just do my best to protect my eye health now using sunglasses or anti-blue light glasses when necessary! My background? Who has a proven track record of results. The benefits of getting LASIK, PRK, or SMILE surgery? ..It is so refreshing to wake up and see clearly right away. And to go to sleep, and not have to worry about taking out my contacts. My morning routine and night routine is much more faster now. Time is saved in my schedule. Money is also saved, because I no longer have to spend on prescription glasses and contacts. It's all so worth it! My LASIK surgery experience? I was comfortable during surgery. Surprisingly. I took valium that they offered, and it all happened very fast. To this day, I don't really remember how it all felt... that's how I know it was comfortable. I am just so grateful about my eyesight. If you get the eye surgery, you'll probably just look back on it like I do. With gratefulness. Not a big deal, but a big blessing. Yes, they use clamps to hold your eye open, but they put numbing eye drops. The surgery just feels like pressure on your eye, but then you're done in an instant. Nothing to be scared of. Once again, it's all so worth it. The staff takes care of you. My appointment was the earliest in the day when they opened. Great choice. I returned home and just went right back to sleep. I woke up at night, and when I opened my eyes I already could see clearly. It was so unbelievably amazing. I ate and went back to sleep. The next day I was fine, but of course for the upcoming week I chose to really rest and followed all of their aftercare instructions. Everything is communicated very clearly. Everything for aftercare is provided for you. You do not need to purchase anything. Some people who went elsewhere would say they had to do that at other places. But not here.
