In February 2015, Dr. Chao performed surgery to repair a torn labrum in my shoulder. Before that surgery, I had no problems or symptoms involving my biceps. Unfortunately, I did not recover as expected and the shoulder continued to have the same issues. In addition, after the surgery, I developed severe biceps pain and weakness that has been far more debilitating than the original shoulder problem. For more than 10 years, I have continued to seek answers through countless appointments, diagnostic tests, treatments, procedures, and additional surgeries. No matter how sickly you feel, I wouldn't go to him $15000 not worth it. And will cancel you right up to the hour of surgery DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN . Dr. Chao is a very good Sports Orthopedic surgeon. I broke my ankle in two places training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he had me up and walking in less than 2 months. Of course therapy is rough, but it has helped me tremendously. Dr. Chao was first recommended to me by my friend Dr. Rommel Llantada of Llantada & Mar aka San Diego Center for Health. When I first made my appointment, Dr. Chao gave me the basics of the ankle and then showed me my xray results (which were two bones snapped in two) he gave me in detail what my two options were (cast only or surgery) and what each one meant. I opted for the surgery as I needed to get back on my feet asap and wanted to also get back into BJJ asap for a major tournament. As far as the surgery went, I had major swelling, but recovered at a decent pace, but the swelling was horrible. I am now in physical therapy which at time feels as painful as when I broke the ankle. Dr. Chao performed ACL reconstruction with Meniscus repair on my son. I can't say enough good things about him and his staff. We flew our son in for an appointment on a Monday and he had surgery that Wednesday. It is 6 weeks post op and my son has full range of motion, is able to bike for 20 minutes and do squats! My son is away at school so it has been stressful, but Dr. Chao's PA (Shaun Young) has been unbelievably helpful! I read some reviews here that Dr. Chao lacks bedside manner. I disagree. What a relaxing and comforting experience. First off, thank you Refugio G. for Yelping about Dr. Chao, as this is why I chose to go to the Oasis Group in the first place. His staff is friendly and light-hearted, even first thing in the morning. Dr. Chao himself was very kind and had excellent bedside manner. He listened intently to my questions and answered them thoroughly as well as suggested therapy for my broken foot. I also had some back and forth with an insurance approval for my pharmacy, and the nurse was nice enough to provide me extra samples to hold me until the issue was resolved. Dr. Chao saved my life! I had frozen shoulder after injury years ago. I literally couldn't move my arm. My hand was numb and even sleeping hurt. I couldn't do anything and was in constant pain. After 10+ other Doctor's tried everything and I was still in pain, I had given up. My husband was on the rugby team and Chao is their team Dr. Husband told him about me and I got an appt even I though thought I it was hopeless. Dr Chao ordered tests and read my chart in a few minutes. He raised other arm, turned my head, looked at my back. In about 2 minutes somehow he figured it out. Ordered surgery for ASAP. I have been a patient of Dr David Chao for 16 years. He's performed my 3 ACL reconstructions and 1 meniscus repair, rehabbed 2 bulged discs and a bad shoulder (ski injuries). I am pleased to report I am injury free and still skiing. Dr Chao performs surgeries on all types and ages of people, from professional and amateur athletes to the elderly more moderately active patients. Fact of the matter, Chao is a great surgeon. Dr. Chao himself seemed very personable upon my first experience visiting his Temecula office. During the visit, I explained to him and his assistant my ongoing pain in both legs/knees. Unsure, of what was going on, he ordered an MRI. I happened to sign into the imaging portal a few days after the MRI and noticed my report. I was hopeful to get answers regarding the pain I've been in for several months. I understand I'm not the only patient and priority is given to stat/emergency situations, so I gave it a couple days hoping someone would call to discuss results. I'm new to California, so maybe I'm use to a different patient experience, but normally when results come in, I receive a phone call to setup an appointment to discuss next steps. Well, several days went by and NOTHING, so I call and leave a message for Dr. Chao's assistant, gave that a few days and NOTHING, no return call! So I finally called the office to be told Dr. Chao is on vacation. Fine, we all deserve one! Is there an assistant or back up who can assist with the pain and discuss next steps? The pain doesn't stop for vacations! Bria goes on to say, "I don't know what you want us to do? He'll be back next week!" At least act like you care and show some empathy since you chose the medical field! I have never experienced this much trouble first of all getting the order to the Imaging Center to have the MRI and then to discuss results. Unacceptable! Back to square one! Game Changer! My knee was in pretty bad shape when I was referred to Dr. Chao. Played college and professional football and already had 3 surgeries. I'd like to heartily recommend David Chao, MD, Orthopedic Group, or Oasis MSO, or Oasis Sports Medical Group, as I knew them a few years ago when they were there for me in a big way. I had received an on-the-job injury, and my family doctor treated it as a knee sprain. I went back to work, but it was getting no better and, after 2 weeks, I still couldn't fully bend or straighten the knee. Two months after the injury, I finally made it to the top of the MRI waiting list, and found out that I had a completely torn anterior cruciate ligament and a large medial meniscus tear in the left knee. While waiting for an appointment with the HMO available through my employer, a coworker who was on light duty after an orthopedic surgery asked me where I would have surgery. He suggested Oasis Sports Medical Group in Kearny Mesa, where he'd had his done. When I found out I could swich my provider to Oasis and still have it covered under Workman's Comp, I was amazed. "Really? I can have MY orthopedic surgery at a place that specializes in fixing injured professional athletes? You've got to be kidding!" I called for an appointment the next day, and the whole thing went so smoothly after that. Those guys are great! I not only qualified for entrance, but passed with flying colors, actually out-running 75 percent of those in the twenty-something age group in my company. STELLAR SERVICE. I came here in 2001 and had surgery for my knee. It was BEYOND what I expected-I didn't even know WHAT to expect but this place catered to all expectations. Getting in for the appointment was a breeze, and I'm lucky enough to have great insurance so...... I was there to see Dr. David Chao because I heard he's the best, he was. The staff is absolutely awesome. Upon diagnosis the doc diagnosed me but in the process my knee totally popped out of place and had me in tears with pain-the staff were nothing but nice, kind, and understanding. One of the nurses even offered to beat the doc up for making me cry-BUT it was necessary. The diagnosis was that I needed surgery and they were ready to book me for THAT week! Also-all their services are done on site. I believe the second floor is for the doctors office and the first floor is the surgery and recovery center. I have come here more than twice for myself and have referred 3 family members and we can all tell you- Easy, fast, convenient and professional. I will always come back, God forbid! They made me wait over an hour to see the doctor who just told me to wear a brace on my knee, did not explain which kind of brace I should wear. Seriously, there is a hundred different types of braces that do different things. I paid both co pays at the time of the visit and now I am being double charged. Worst place ever. Unreal. read more

Four years ago I busted my right shoulder... a nasty Judo fall on a sixty year old shoulder. Next day I saw a local orthopedic surgeon who never bothered to take an MRI and sent me me home. After three weeks of excruciating pain I went to see a sports doctor who's been my primary care doctor ever since. He had me get an immediate MRI then sent me down to San Diego to see Dr. Chao. Within a couple of days, Dr. Chao opened his busy schedule and operated on me. The damage was very substantial, yet the delicate and extensive procedures he performed on me gave me full use of my shoulder within weeks of physical therapy and I was back doing Martial Arts. I often joke that the only part of my body that's twenty-years old is my shoulder. When, in the past couple of years, my left shoulder began to give me increasing pain, either Dr. Chao would again perform the arthroscopic surgery or else I'd continue living with the pain. It's barely been two months since the surgery and, after physical therapy, I have regained almost full use of that other shoulder. Both times, Dr. Chao gave me a DVD of the entire procedure and both times I was very impressed by his surgical skills. The man is fast, precise and efficient and in my opinion he displays the experience and creative skills of an artist. In fact, my friends are tired of my mentioning his name every time the conversation turns to arthroscopic surgery. Dr David Chao is amazing. He did my 10 yr old daughters elbow surgery. My daughter is a competitive gymnast and she hurt her elbow back in about April. We went to a doctor who took an x-ray and said, no broken bones she's fine and sent us on our way. Well her elbow kept getting worse and worse. We found Dr. Hizon who splinted her arm right away, said no gymnastics and referred us to get an mri and referred us right to Dr. David Chao. The mri showed a piece of cartilage had broken off her elbow at some point and had jammed itself in her elbow. She couldn't move her arm much, use it much, and she couldn't do any gymnastics. Dr Chao went in and took the cartilage out and fixed her right up. She is only 5 days post op and she already has her stitches out and is able to start using her arm again. The doctor and all of his staff in all of his offices have been so nice, very helpful and caring. I highly recommend Dr David Chao for any sports injuries because he is thorough and has many, many years experience. We are so thankful to have found Dr. Chao and his medical group. I can't thank Dr. Chao enough for the amazing rotator cuff tear surgery he performed on me Feb 2018. Everything is perfect with great range of motion. He does not perform surgery unless you need it and in my case we tried several months of PT first, prior to deciding the surgery path. A few years ago, I tore my pectoral muscle off my shoulder while bench pressing. Dr. Chao repaired it, and now I am back to bench pressing 300 lb which is very good for 60 years of age. Recently, I severely strained my calf muscle sprinting on a foreign trip; it was so injured that I could barely walk from the elevator to my hotel room for a days. When I got back to the USA, Dr. Chao recommend again surgery and just gave me a cortisone injection and recommended physical therapy. Within 4 weeks of my injury, I could run 7 miles. Dr. Chao only recommends surgery when it is needed and has great advice for mature, obsessive, and somewhat paranoid athletes...if you know what I mean and I think you do. read more
