Dear people who need to have a tooth removed: fear not. I had my tooth removed today, this very day, barely an hour ago actually, by the skilled hands of Dr. Kao and his team. It was as easy as getting a cavity filled but it took half the time. I was terrified yesterday, I felt doomed, and I must say I'm a bit ashamed of that now. We either overthink the procedure or don't know anything about how it works. First, it's not like you're imagining, there is no terrifying pulling or yanking. The tooth is merely trimmed apart until it's gone while your mouth is entirely numb. I felt nothing throughout the whole procedure which lasted only 15 mins tops in my case. The only thing I could feel was the drilling sensation as if I was getting a cavity filled. That was it. I left the office feeling fine, maybe even a little dumbfounded, because yesterday in my imagination I was expecting to leave crawling and whimpering. I'll tell you right now if I ever have to get another tooth removed, or anything serious, I wouldn't even consider another dentist other than Dr. Kao. It's unthinkable. He is highly skilled, in my case he was exceptional, a surgeon like a fine artisan. From Orange County to Los Angeles, Dr Kao's office wasn't the closest for me but was well worth the trek. Dr Kao's staff was very friendly, professional and efficient, from the sign in process to the super cool Dental Cone Beam CT Scan (which generates a 3D Image of your pearly whites). Viewing a 3D Image of all your teeth and having Dr Kao walk through the entire procedure in detail gave me a sense of quality assurance and care. He answered all my questions thoroughly and did not rush any part of the procedure. With one wisdom tooth out, I'm ready for the next three extractions (even though it's not needed)...perhaps all three at once based on the seamless and painless extraction of the first one. Will try to keep it short but if you just want a synopsis: David is THE gum guy to go to in LA. Hands down. Story: 1. I started to notice my receding gum in different areas since 2016. By late 2018, things have gotten noticeably serious relative to my age ( getting chills every time drinking hot/cold water), so I searched for a periodontist in LA. Since the receding was really bad, I had to schedule 3 different procedures in Feb, April, June 2019 respectively, to the best of my recollection now. Gonna skip details of the last two since the two areas of recession involved are less serious, and the results have been very great. I guess one can see more in a review when things didn't go as smoothly. 2. The first procedure fixes the most serious receding happening with 4 (or 5?) consecutive teeth on my upper left jaw. 2 of them are done with gum graft, and the other 2 are done with pinhole. Pinhole is a newer technique that basically pulls your gum back toward where the gum line should be. It's designed for less severe receding. It is much less intrusive than traditional gum grafting procedure, but there's inherently more variability to the result since it isn't cementing any new tissue to the receding area and the possibility of a relapse's there. Dr Kao had discussed the strategy with me thoroughly before the procedure and I was on board with this, since I also believed in not doing gum graft (the unclear option in my mind then) unless absolutely necessary. In fact, I was the one who raised the pinhole solution in the first place, having done my homework b4 seeing him. By June 2019 unfortunately I noticed some minor receding of the two teeth done with pinhole. There was also this extra complication that I had to leave LA for Australia for a new job in July. During my last follow-up with Dr Kao, he offered that if I noticed further receding down the line, he could do a supplement grafting procedure to fix that, for free, if it wasn't way too far into the future. I'm writing this review in July 2020, in Australia, already a year in since my last visit. At the moment the world is reeling over covid. Naturally, I couldn't travel to LA since last year. Last night I texted David. He replied that he would still stand by his commitment of offering a supplement procedure, at a deep discount in the worst case, if I have a chance to visit LA (soon?). I guess this speaks to his work ethics. read more

I had severe periodontal gum disease that came on suddenly (at least it was a big surprise to me, especially that it was so bad!)... After researching like crazy for a great DDS in Los Angeles I decided to visit Dr Kao because he appeared more concerned about the science & care than some of the others with big shiny offices I read about. I also was impressed with his UCLA and other credentials and loved that he is a participant of Help the Children, a humanitarian relief organization that offers dental services to underserved communities. After many visits over 8 months I can honestly say Dr. Kao and his staff have been amazing!!! They take their time, are nice & gentle and seem genuinely concerned. I had to get very intense deep cleaning including the use of a special laser that only affects the diseased part of my gums. Needless to say it was severe. BUT the good news was he put in a lot of effort and managed to save my gums! Plus all of my teeth were saved (yea, NO implants needed)! Referred to by Dr.Z down the hall, I feel like I hit the dental all star hallway when I went into Dr.Kao's office. Dr. Kao squeezed me into his very busy schedule, seeing me as a walk in who was dealing with emergency style pain. I am forever grateful to his staff and expertise. Dr. Kao dealt with me from dramatic to overly excited once everything was taken care of. I lived with a life time of worry dealing with a sideways impacted wisdom tooth, that was literally handled within an hour, and I did not have to take any pain medication to follow up. I'm sure it's on a case by case basis, but I also did not deal with any swelling or bruising following the procedure. I highly recommend this office to anyone who is in need of extractions or root canals of any kind. I will definitely be getting my remaining dental work done at this lab. I was told by my dentist a few years ago that I should have a gum graft to cover my exposed tooth roots. I was scared and wanted to try "natural" methods for healing my gums. Did not work. So I started calling around to periodontists. The first two offices were not very helpful in terms of giving cost estimates for the consultations. One told me it was between $80-$200. What? How do you not know? Then I called Dr. Kao's office. Not only was the receptionist able to give me an exact cost for the consultation she offered to check my insurance for me so she could see if it would be covered. The receptionist was so helpful. I booked an appointment for a consult. Then I met dr. Kao. He was very thorough in his exam. He then explained to me exactly what was happening with my gums. He even drew some pictures to help explain the situation! He explained the benefits of having the procedure and the risks of not, but I never felt like he was trying to sell me the procedure. I felt like he was providing me with the information I needed to make an informed decision. I agreed to having the procedure. It turned out I had used up nearly all my dental insurance for the year. Since I would be paying for the procedure out of pocket I was given a cash discount. So I had my procedure which was not fun, but not terrible either. Dr. Kao made sure my mouth was completely numb before he began. He gave me a sheet with do's and don't's and what I could expect the first day or two. He also gave me his mobile phone number in case anything out of the ordinary happened. Sure enough, my bleeding which was supposed to have stopped a few hours after the procedure just kept flowing. It was 10pm and I felt bad about using the mobile number (doctors deserve off time too), but excessive bleeding was one of the things he said should NOT happen. The doctor not only took my call and walked me through some steps to stop the bleeding, he checked up on me an hour later to see if things were better. Then the next day he texted me to see if everything was alright. The level of care I received was exceptional!!!!!!!! The quality of work was also exceptional! It has now been a couple months since the surgery. You cannot even tell there was a patch done. My dentist even complimented the work saying it was one of the best gum grafts she has seen. :) read more

I started falling behind on my dental hygiene due to not having insurance and not being able to afford visits. Needless to say I was on the search for a good periodontist, I get high anxiety during dentist visits because they have always been so painful in the past. So naturally I was nervous on my first visit with Dr. Kao, but he is very careful and makes sure you feel very comfortable with any treatment you are getting! I have been seeing Dr. Kao for several months having a dental implant. My case required a few procedures and I'm very happy with the whole experience and my new tooth. I just had dental implant surgery two days ago with Dr. Kao. He was thorough with his explaining of the procedure at my evaluation appointment. I had a really bad experience before with other dentist so I am always very scared with any dental procedure.
