That being said, there are good people I encounter who genuinely do care. I have been going to the Detroit VA for 13 years. What I can say is that I do see overall improvement. Yesterday, I had a video conferencing follow up appointment with my Primary Care physician. This was a quite welcomed technology addition to patient care. I did not have to take a half a day off from work to go to an appointment to cover routine standard lab results. It was quite easy to connect and do the appointment via the VA Health VideoConnect app.

One of the most alarming issues was the complete lack of basic comfort and proper facilities. The heating and cooling system in my room was not working, leaving the environment extremely uncomfortable for an extended period of time. In a healthcare setting, where patients are already vulnerable, this is simply inexcusable. Even more concerning was the level of neglect I experienced. After being admitted, I was not properly attended to--I was not fed in a timely manner and went far too long without being seen by a doctor. Being left without proper medical attention after admission is not just frustrating, it raises serious concerns about patient safety and standards of care. Communication throughout my stay was poor. I had to repeatedly ask for updates and basic information about my condition and care plan, often with little to no response. Call buttons went unanswered for long stretches, and requests for assistance were delayed or ignored. Additionally, the overall environment did not feel clean or well-maintained, which only added to the discomfort and concern. HFH wanted to do multiple tests while Karmanos stated I needed surgery IMMEDIATELY. I chose Karmanos (Wertz in Detroit) their tag line, "Your best chance", and they were right. Three years later and two surgery's I'm on chemo and current CT' s cannot find any cancer. The staff is amazing, friendly, comforting and responsive to my needs. I HIGHLY recommend Karmanos.
