I'm done with the Detroit VA. After years of problems, today was the final straw. I went through a full day of prep for a procedure, only to have it canceled at the last minute because they switched from anesthesia. On top of that, the scheduling was a nightmare -- they gave me the wrong date and time during confirmation a week before, I corrected them, and then the day before the appointment they still repeated the wrong time. This is the same place that once left me in unbearable pain from kidney stones in the ER, refusing to help until I filled out transfer paperwork. That's not care -- that's bureaucracy over human life. I'd rather risk my health than trust this broken, incompetent system again. read more

A large, but dark and cramped to maneuver in parking garage. The medical center is usually fairly clean. The staff range between really good and not great. In particular, the MSAs (clerks) range between great and hostile. Almost all of the providers are great, so that the few that are not really stand out as a negative example read more

This review is about the food in the food court, nothing about the hospital itself. Whenever someone says, "hospital food" you immediately think bland, subpar food. The VA hospital bucks this trend with its amazing breakfast grill and delicious fried chicken for lunch. The fried chicken is easily amongst the top chicken I've had in Detroit. It's moist and juicy on the inside, and has a good crunch on the outside. It's reasonably priced as well. At lunch, there is a huge line for the food at this station. The sides are the average food service offerings. The things to avoid is the Middle Eastern station. I've had this several times and the rice is always wet yet undercooked at the same time. Super odd. This also goes for the grab and go Middle Eastern food. I swear that the bowl I got had chicken that was left over from the fried chicken the day before, with the same awful rice on the bottom of the dish. read more

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible experience I had today at the VA Detroit ER. I tested positive for Flu A, but the level of care and efficiency was truly impressive. They moved me through their fast-track lane, placed me in a private room, and even kept me there until my medications were filled so I wouldn't risk exposing others. I was in and out in under an hour. Having had more than a few tough VA experiences in the past, I have to tip my hat to how far this facility has come since I last visited 20 years ago. This post is for the parking while at the VA for a sleep study. I completed my sleep study and walked into the parking garage. When I got into the garage I noticed my window was busted out, and my vehicle was rummaged through. I called the VA security and was told to wait by my car. it's been an hour and still nobody has shown up, even after the second call I placed. I parked at the main entrance with plenty of visibility to both guard shacks and the main entrance to the elevators on the Lower Level of the parking structure. The VA needs to do a better job of protecting veteran's property when they have them come in to do a sleep study, this is unacceptable. read more

The VA system does get dinged a lot and justifiably so in many areas and functions. This begins from the people to the services provided. That being said, there are good people I encounter who genuinely do care. I have been going to the Detroit VA for 13 years. What I can say is that I do see overall improvement. Yesterday, I had a video conferencing follow up appointment with my Primary Care physician. This was a quite welcomed technology addition to patient care. I did not have to take a half a day off from work to go to an appointment to cover routine standard lab results. It was quite easy to connect and do the appointment via the VA Health VideoConnect app. read more

My husband went down yesterday he had tested positive for covid however they would not prescribe medicine for his symptons cough congestion etc They said all they give is an experimental drug not fda approved Paxlovid, but if you refuse it you get nothing not even a steriod pac for cough etc he was told to go home n stay there for 10 days no medicine no help. We dont want something you dont know what effects it will have and is not approved. But you cant treat the symptons. Sounds like all dr have been told this is all they can give for covid (dr i seen said as much but gave me steriods to help) read more

What I find so disturbing is 75% of the staff really cares. They go way over and beyond to show it to the veterans. Then there is the 25% who go to extreme measures just to piss people off. At the Detroit VA, this 25% is typically the nursing staff. Stay far away from the emotionally raging endoscopy nursing team. They try their hardest to get veterans so angry they just up and leave the facility, likely for ever. Many of these veterans have driven a long distance, used a vacation day, stayed in a local hotel and used taxis to get to the facility. They came up with five different reasons to deny me scheduled services. Their office sign was removed, the sign-in desk is unmanned and have a bell to ring for service, which doesn't work. Probably the most useless Gov't organization there is. Went to the clinic for a check up and 6 months later they tried to convince me i needed a liver transplant..... they were reading three lab results of another veteran and confused them with mine.... don't get me started on the VA home loans. They're completely useless as well. I was denied a joke loan because of 1 30 day late payment on a revolving credit acct...... I'm not even joking. I was at VA and went to the ER. I had asked the employee there a couple of questions and he was very condescending to me. I asked him to please not have an attitude with me and he flipped me off. I then asked for his name and to see his ID and he walked away flipping me off. This employee definitely needs help and should not be involved what so ever with Military Veterans. read more

AKA "Hellhole". Parking structure incredibly unsafe and the VA Police refuse to acknowledge the danger; A lot of the employees are nasty and unprofessional. Some employees are extremely sweet and nice, but rare. I am automatically stressed out once entering the building. read more

The doctors and nurses are all very good but holy sweet mother are the administrators and support staff stupid. I'm talking can't read a calendar, have no idea how to operate effective and efficiently stupid. They should pretty much just close the VA and give vets medicare and get it over with, that's how broken the VA system is. Oh, and if you have an Rx to fill here, prepare to wait. Seriously. By far the worst VA hospital that we travel to. I refer to it as going to the "Hellhole" My husband is 100 % with a lengthily VA heath care record we have been to Detroit at least 20 times so and every time it is the same at. We have been given the wrong meds, even though it was clearly stated, written in files, were listed on the MYHEALTHYVET portal, we've had to stay overnight due to allergic reactions caused by the error (trust me you do not want to spend a night in Hell). While I will give a great review to a few of the doctors and staff, they are few and far between. We have been left in recovery after the surgeon left for the weekend even knowing there were medical problems, left in a family waiting room for the out patience procedure to be completed only to discover hours later the Vet had been admitted, we have had to report to a local emergency room twice after treatment at Detroit and pay out of pocket. We have never been to a worst medical center. And to think we have to drive 180 miles one way for this bull crap. We have used VA services for nearly 20 years at 5 different locations and the Detroit one is the only one that makes us angry each and every time we have to go. We beg not to be sent to Detroit, and are at the point of considering paying out of our own pocket for care the VA deems required be done in Detroit. If you are sent to the Detroit VA, please make sure you do not go by yourself, make sure you have an advocate with you. read more

Va Detroit staff in radiology is clueless. They are too busy not answering phones or people standing at the window in front of them. They think your time doesn't matter and lack any knowledge of how customer service works. Sad they subject veterans to crappy customer service. read more

Do not listen to people leaving negative reviews. This hospital has excellent staff and services. Any veteran will be treated fairly with up to date medical treatments by well trained physicians. The Detroit VAMC is vastly superior to the hospitals nearby. read more

Both wife and I are Retired U.S. Navy and now we are traveling the country. Been having an issue with my hearing in both ears. Went to an Urgent Care in Port Huron where they diagnosed issue, partially cleared one ear, stopped on other after a problem...they suggested the VA who would have more capability to handle. Did give me prescription for antibiotics to avoid infection. Went to the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit yesterday (8/16/2018) to get my ears checked out. EVERY person I dealt with..totally professional, from Regina in Admitting for ER, Dr. Coello and Tech Scott (in Fast Track)...compassion and friendliness were what I received. Tech Scott did an excellent job of gently removing the obstructions in both ears, Dr. Coello of pre & post procedure checking for any damage to ear drums/canal. Excellent place my grandfather goes there for treatments and they treat him very well. They are very helpful in helping find where you need to go. And the staff are very great at getting you in your appointments and getting you signed out. read more

My hubby goes here a couple of times a year and I usually go with him. Have found everyone from security to maintenance, friendly and extremely helpful. Have never had to wait for too long and everyone who works there seems happy and friendly. Had heard so many bad things about this place before but it is great now. Clean, modern facility. read more

I went there this afternoon to visit my brother in the mental health ward, the nurse (I want to say her name was Cindy? not 100% sure) that talked to us at the door was Extremely rude to my mother and I. We had called an hour/hour and a half before we got there to say we were coming to visit, when we were greeted by her she was very condescending and told us that we need to call before we show up, and that we could not see him because he was sleeping and that she would give him the card and book that we got him...hours later when we came back to see him, he did not know we were there earlier and did not receive his book or card. It's really unnerving to know that your loved ones are being taken care of by people with disgusting attitudes, when all you want is assurance that they are in a safe and supportive environment. The other nurses that were there when we went back were a breath of fresh air from her, they were very nice and accommodating. read more
