you can find anything here. it's wonderful for people who likes books. the inside is a maze. books are stacked up high and low. it smells pretty ok, it's well lit, there aren't any dark and dangerous corners to watch out for. i have never gone here with any specific thing i am looking for so i don't know how easy or hard it is to find something. i imagine that you would prob need some help. i don't know what kind of catalog they keep so who knows if they can actually help you. but it seems possible that they have everything, so even if you can't find the exact thing, you will prob find a few other things you will be very happy to leave with. read more

Probably the BEST used bookstore I have ever been in. It is massive, with such a wide variety and depth of selection that you will no doubt find at least one book that suits you here (i found 20 on my first shopping visit). The store seems to go on forever and has a great science, math, medicine section, which is my preference. However, every genre is covered here. The books are in varying condition, but from what I can tell are all either very good or like new. Prices are reasonable, and seem to be standardized based on type (ie textbook $15, hardcover $7.50, soft cover less than or equal to $3.50) The staff was helpful enough, but was not super friendly, which I found weird. That is probably the only downside. If you like books and are in ann arbor you owe it to yourself to stop here and help yourself to at least one walk through. The only problem I am sure you will find is that you will end up wanting to buy a bunch of books! read more

Would really like independent businesses to thrive, but the way things are going here, this one will likely not even survive. The reason: attitude. I've been in here both as a buyer and a seller, and each time I was treated as though my presence was a major inconvenience. Friends report the same thing. No hellos, thank-yous, or any sense of appreciation that a customer deigned to stop in and part with his/her money or books. At first, I thought the guy was just having a bad day, then it happened again and again. The kicker is that, when I finally asked him if he was the owner, He replied: I'm the manager. Message to store owner, if you are out there: Your surly manager is quickly driving your customers away. read more

I hate to give only 2 stars, because I believe in printed books and want to support local shops that cater to bookworms like me, but I just had a really bad experience with the girl at the front desk. After searching on my own, I thought I'd ask the front desk to see if they could help find the book I was looking for given there's a sign that reads: "We have a lot of titles not on the shelves so please ask the front desk if you can't find what you're looking for." I took that to mean that whoever's manning the front desk would be somewhat helpful. I approach, smile and say hi to the girl tapping away at her computer on gchat, but she gives me this looks that says "Why are you bugging me?". So I ask her if they have this book, after which she replies, "No, we don't have it." I may have made a snarky reply along the lines of, "So you know all the books you guys have in your head?" There was no effort on her part to help me look, or ask someone else who might have been working in the back. Why even have that sign posted? I did actually end up buying some other books, and she was equally if not more rude during the checkout process, pretty much tossing my credit card back at me, along with the books, while glancing at her gchat window the whole time! Wow, I really wasn't expecting that kind of treatment from a used book store. These are supposed to be enlightened people, with depth, and intelligence, and some tact. I feel bad for the management, because shops like this thrive by building strong relationships with local customers. I will definitely not be going back. read more

Piles and piles and piles of books. You can hardly get to the shelves. People who work there do not generally know what they have, so if you are seeking a particular title, be prepared to spend some time and be creative about where they might have put it. However, they really do have a ton of used books. It's not clear to me that it's worth trying to sell books TO them. read more

The books are pretty well organized, and I found a few that I liked. Each paperback that I considered was $7.50. This wasn't much of a deal for used books, and I didn't want to carry them around to my other stops. So I decided not to buy any. I would have felt obligated after browsing for so long if they had said hello to me, but I guess that isn't the Ann Arbor way. I might go back if I'm in the area for something else. I walked through the door, and I thought, "This is how a bookstore should smell!" Oh, the scent of old books...how I love it! Wandering through....looking for treasures...perusing the jagged lines of books on the irregularly spaced shelves....sheer luxury! To my utter joy, I found a book written my a scholar I cite often and a collection of translated short stories by a Korean author I love. The prices were about the same as if I had purchased the used books through online booksellers, but the experience of visiting Dawn Teader Book Shop could never be replicated in cybersapce. If only the cashier had seemed less annoyed when I was ready to make my purchase, my visit would have been a perfect adventure. read more

Dawn Treader is my favorite used book store after Powell's in Portland, Oregon. Narrow walkways separate towering shelves which are lined by stacks of paperbacks. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the Dawn Treader. Whether I went seeking books for school or pleasure, I always left with my hands full. The prices are reasonable and "Le Dog" is only a block away so you can conveniently enjoy your new used book with a side of homemade soup. read more

This might be my favorite used book store in Ann Arbor. I think their prices are reasonable and their selection is great. I've passed this store a gazillion times before finally going in. (I always bought my books on amazon.) And after going in once, I think I am faithful to buying from here for a used book rather than amazon. You can get lost in here for hours just browsing and even though the store is totally cluttered, it is still organized and it all makes sense. So far they have had books I've gone there to get and even some of those books that I've been meaning to read but always forget that I've been meaning to read it when I get to the bookstore. read more

Best used bookstore I have visited to date. I make sure to come here every time I visit A2. A HUGE selection of books in so many genres, and it is actually very organized; I've never had any trouble locating anything I'm searching for. The shelves are all clearly labeled, with very specific subjects still broad enough that you can easily find what you're looking for. Such a cool collection of postcards/posters/trinkets as well. And the prices are soooo reasonable!!!! I've been able to get great quality books I was purposely looking for for as cheap as 50 cents. I could spend hours just browsing their shelves. Dawn Treader is a great little used book store. They could be said to specialize in SF/fantasy, but that would be unfair. I have found a wide variety of obscure titles in here, in topics such as history, philosophy, computers, languages, cultures, and even a book on Chinese writing written in Swedish! The staff can be very helpful, and the owner is often in the place and available to help. In the main, the store is well enough laid out that you can find things yourself without too much work. The only downside is -- there are too many books! The floor of the fiction aisles are usually littered with piles of books that have no chance of reaching the shelves due to lack of space. read more

I am just going with the flow for the 4 star rating. It's actually one of my least favorite bookstores in A2. That doesn't mean that it isn't good, just means that DTBS and I did not click. DTBS actually has a fairly good selection of foreign language books which I appreciate a great deal. I don't know. When I was an undergrad, I never gave DTBS much thought because there was alway Afterwords. Then Afterwords went out of business while I was away on my academic year long journey to find peace and acceptance of what, where, who, and when I was. When I came back I was still in mourning of my loss. You see, I was just about to segue into something having nothing to do with books or bookstores closing. I need to stop. Let this be a tribute to Afterwords. There are 6 billion bookstores in the world, more or less, but you will always be the one I love most of all. read more

Walked by this place 100s of times before finally stopping in. It doesn't look like much from the street (in fact it looks quite small on the inside), but once you're inside the place is huge. (not if you are only into new highschool lovey mushy story kinda ones, but they do have a great section on that too.. :D ) they also do have a lot of antique stuff and a lot of first editions dating back at least a century from now... I love this type of store. (Although anyone who is claustrophobic or a neat freak should steer clear.) If you are looking to kill a few hours poking around looking at old stuff, then this is your place. They also have a nice selection of vintage postcards. read more

I have been going here for a couple of years now, and it is a pretty great place. Great selection, good prices, and fairly well organized. I never really interacted with the staff there because I mostly browsed, grabbed my book and checked out....however; the last time I was in there I was appalled by the way I was treated by the guy behind the counter. I had a question about a book, and where I might find it if it was in their store, it was sort of an unusual subject matter, so I thought he could help. He sort of huffed, and puffed at my silly question and brought me over to an art section, and told me that this place was more of a browsing place, and that he does not have a computer system,and he does not know everything about every book ever printed. Now, I was not expecting miracles, just a friendly suggestion, but he made it seem like such a chore to help me.....and to top it off, he made a rude comment about the bag I was carrying. I will probably go back here, because I refuse to buy new books,but the was I was treated was so, very Ann Arbor. read more

Just left this store. Only reason I gave one star is there isn't an option for no stars. Older gentleman at register was terrible. He knocked over a stack of books and I helped him pick them up and he never said thank you or anything. A young gentleman asked for a bag for a purchase he had just made and he continued to ring up a large order and he looked with a glare right at the gentleman and shook out two bags twice and loaded the woman's purchases. Then when the lady was done he handed her a receipt and then her daughter came up with more books and she said she would take those. He then began to ring her up again even though I was next with just two books and he still didn't give the other gentleman a bag! Worse customer service ever! I will never return as I am sure he doesn't want my business anyway. read more

It's organized and has lots and lots of books. The problem is that really they have too many "secondary" books and few of the really good essential books. So in common science fiction series, they'll have books 2-5 of the series but not book one. Or they'll be missing essential classics. Even in classic social science and history the common book I asked for, they did not have. So it looks like a situation where they're clear of the essentals, but have accumulated more and more stuff that no one buys. If you like really obscure stuff that no one buys then it's OK. Does not compare favorably with the Strand in NYC or Powells in Portland. Even with all that I found a few books to buy. read more

What a book store should be, reminds me of my old haunts in NYC, before the big chain stores closed them all down. Great old book smells (no mustiness), labyrinthine aisles, and great selection of kids books too. Their prices are higher than at charity thrift shops or at the Friends Library bookstore, but comparable for most used book stores, and the books are in excellent condition. read more

This is my favorite bookstore in Ann Arbor! It's also by far the largest used book store around Ann Arbor! You will be amazed at how far back the shelves go. Every now and then, like today for instance, I drop in and see what has changed on my favorite shelves since last time. I've been able to get a lot of books from my favorite authors over time. A local treasure!!! Every time I walk in here I completely forget what I was looking for because there's so many amazing books I never knew even about. For a primarily used bookstore they have a surprising amount of newer books too. The sci-fi/fantasy section is my favorite though. There are so many choice picks from across the decades. I liked to browse here a lot when living in Ann Arbor, but now that I've moved away I just feel kind of sad about my experience there selling books. I don't know so much about how used bookstores operate, and I know you have to buy books cheaper than for what you would sell them because profit is a priority, but I feel like this place is ruthless. I had some extra books around that I didn't have much use for, some new and pretty pricey, and I was financially not so well off at the time and I thought I could easily make some extra cash by selling them. I didn't really want to sell them online because it seemed nice to support local businesses and not as much hassle, and I liked the store. I got there with a box, and the guy at the counter was pretty arrogant for whatever reason. He looked through my stuff, picked out what he wanted, and then gave me the absolute worst deal. I was feeling insecure for some reason, like some peasant who couldn't even be bothered with. I was also tired of thinking about the stupid books for any longer, so I took some store credit that may have been the value of half of one of the books I sold there. I thought it might be some kind of nice exchange type deal to look on the bright side, but looking back, it was really not fair at all. I don't blame them, though, because I was overwhelmed at that point and should have said no thank you. Local business is always good, and like I said, it can be a fun place to browse I guess, even though it's pretty small and takes away the fun of the hunt for cool things and surprises if you like looking for books in thrift stores or yard sales or larger stores. But thinking about this place bums me out even still and I would rather have just kept the books looking back because it didn't benefit me at all. I should have not tried to sell there, but I had no idea what to expect and I think that they are really unkind by taking advantage of people like that. And if the bookstore thing isn't working out so well that they need to do this and disregard the interest of people selling to them, then this kind of business is just obsolete. Or if they don't really need people selling to them, as in it doesn't really don't matter to them at all and worth so little, then they shouldn't offer and give people the wrong idea. read more
