Don't judge a book by its cover. This small town lodge is more than you think. Located in a small town but close to so much. Check in went well. Room was clean and comfortable. Nice hot shower. You have a sandwich shop and 24hr gas station across the street. Within an hr you're at a National Park. You have waterfalls and hot spring near by. I highly recommend booking here. The hosts were very friendly. The room was quaint and we had a room that was facing the back of the lodge, so it was very quiet! The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were quality sheets. The negative reviews are wild and come across as entitled tourists who expect a Marriott experience in a small lodge off of a highway in small town Eastern Oregon! The outside was a little off-putting, but the lobby was much nicer than expected. The night auditor came rather quickly when I rang the bell at the desk! He was very pleasant and even inquired about helping me with any luggage. He also made sure to mention the coffee station that he keeps nicely stocked for guests. This was wonderful because my retired father wakes at 3am and was able to shuffle his way to a fresh cup early! The beds were soft and clean! The tvs are new, but given the rural enough location, satellite is required. They have dvd players!! And tons of dvds in the lobby to checkout. I love their hotel binder that so many hotels have seemingly stopped offering. It includes the details about how to work the tv setup and the menus for the local cafe and Ponderosa Public House. A very thoughtful offering and great local networking of businesses taking care of one another. I'll admit my first instinct was "this is a little bit Bates Motel." But I warmed up quickly to the area. Right next to a gas station with a store. Directly across from the truck, stop with a Subway. Right across from the local eateries! All the cars parked there were respectable family vehicles clearly a bunch of tourists. So you're not staying in a place that may give you a "do people live here in this kind of run down place?" concerns that some of these smaller dingy on the outside motels can give our more modern-day expecting mindsets! Yep, it's right by the train station. It's right off the highway. You hear noises. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper. I grew up off of a highway in rural Oregon so it's a comfort to me but something to keep in mind if you're not used to country noises at night! read more

Worst hotel I've stayed in for $130/Night. No night stands on either side of the bed. We had to put everything on the floor which was gross. The shower had a large black stain 12 inches around on the bottom of the drain. I wore flip flops to take a shower and there were full size shampoo and conditioner from the last guest. Men's arm and hammer shampoo. :( Plus the road noise from the freeway was going all night. And, the clerk at the front desk couldn't tell me whether the north or south Crater Lake entrance was closer. Whatever we have phones we can check it just struck me as an odd thing for the front desk folks not to know as they are running a hotel in a tourist location. This was a roach motel that I wouldn't have paid more than $80 for. Waste of $$$. read more

Adorable, Charming, Inviting. It has little homey touches like a sunshine nick nack hanging on the bathroom wall, soft bedding, make up removing wipes, a blow dryer, microwave, and mini fridge. Nothing is nailed down like you would see in your typical motel. It is more like an old school bed and breakfast. The amenities are not 5 star, more like dollar general shampoos and such but they have thought of practically everything and it is right next to two stores and a nice diner. We almost pulled into the place across the street but the old school charm of this one drew us in. Normally I would give a place like this 4 stars but I am throwing in an additional star for the proudly displayed American Flag on the building. read more

Staying here for one night. The TV isn't working and the staff kept saying they're gonna come up and fix it but never did, claimed to come up a few times but nope, lazy ass staff that wanna do the minimal and let their business turn into complete shit not caring about the patrons. One persons room the handle was falling off and they said something and got told basically said "oh well, nobody is forcing you to stay here". The creamer was also spoiled so who knows what else is expired in this place‍ its not hard to replace the damn coffee creamers. Historic old hotel clean and comfortable and a real plus they are dog friendly, you wouldn't know a dog would have ever been in the place, so good job on cleaning! Right on the main drag, so it does quiet down some. Overall nice stay the town could use some more eating establishments only drawback for the town. Rooms are over priced and dirty. Don't be fooled by the "rustic" and "historic" billing on the website-this place is a dump. Floors were so dirty that bare feet were black after walking on them for 10 minutes. Both rooms smelled, no wonder-they allow people to smoke on the deck where the room air conditioners are pulling in the smoke. It one room had a wall light with the cord running directly into the switch outlet, an absolute fire hazard and against code. Bedspreads were stained and every mattress was terrible-no one got much sleep. Best to avoid this place, and maybe this town, all together if travelling through! read more

Estb. in 1929, the Rose room is in pretty good shape. Modified enough for present times but kept most of the authenticity of that time period. Keeping in mind of when it was built, the only bad things were: when a train passes by, it vibrates the room & the very slow draining tub. The bed was hard as a rock which is terrible to sleep on. Ok....I have to admit this at first. I wasn't expecting much when I pulled up in Chemult looking for lodging to get off the icy highway for the night. US 97 had turned into an ice rink and it didn't feel safe going any further. When we pulled up to the Dawson House Lodge, I really just needed to find a room to sleep in. I explained to a really kind man at the front desk that I had a party of five and needed a room. He took me up to show me the 'Parker Loft' and I was sold. The room was huge, there were three beds, a TV, a couch, a table and a full kitchen. There was an attached bathroom with a decent shower. Room rate was incredibly low for what we got. There was a surprisingly strong DVD movie collection for use downstairs, with new movies (released to DVD very recently). The staff was kind and unassuming. We couldn't have been happier. No, it's not terribly modern inside, but it was a wonderful stay nonetheless. I can't think of a better place to end up getting stranded in a storm than here at the Dawson House Lodge. Free wifi, DVDs, full kitchen, huge room, hot shower, friendly staff. We loved it! read more

Keep driving past this town and hotel. We stayed in our room less than 30 minutes. It was an odd place and very noisy with highway sounds. We packed our bags quickly after someone tried entering our room. This town is very small and rundown. It is basically a truck stop/gas station and a few restaurants. We were coming back from Crater Lake. I recommend the extra drive and staying in Bend. read more

They take dogs. Very friendly owner with treats for Fido and very welcoming. Was able to give us a downstairs room due to bad knees, and it was a good size. She had free movies for in room viewing with a DVD player and we really enjoyed it. Only problem was lack of restaurant choices for a veg eater. The saving grace was the Subway sandwich place open 24/7 that was good and very accommodating. Also, no outside seating for the dog. The upstairs room that we could not enjoy this trip is very nice. Spent one night and paid $195.00 for room with a kitchen incase we wanted to cook. Check in the the Host was ok... kept making comments what two people wanted such a large room. Then proceeded to tell me that they were expecting 1-3 inches of snow and if the satellite tv went out she was getting up to brush off the snow until the following day But there were DVD's available to take up to your room.... Satellite did go out about 9p so we decided to call it a night. The beds are below standard and the pillows were awful. The one bed that was secluded away from the others was overcome with cobwebs. Every light fixture had cobwebs. The kitchen area was far from clean. No drinking glasses but a ton of coffee mugs. 2 almost rolls of toilet paper and no paper towels. Used wash cloths as napkins. I own and operate vacation rentals in Hawaii and if my rentals were like this I wouldn't be in business. Avoid this place. read more

I stayed on a Saturday night in April 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic en route to taking care of elderly parents. Just needed a pit stop, and this was perfect. I also had a recent knee injury of my own, and the front desk was able to change me into a ground floor room from my reservation for the Jessup Room. I appreciated the fact the room was clean during this situation, freshly disinfected and aired out, etc. The hardwood floors were nice, and the bed was comfortable. I was able to park my car right next to the door of the room. There were two beds, and the bedding was freshly washed and smelled nice. There were plenty of amenities (DVD, satellite TV, bath/shower stuff, etc.). The shower stall was a little cramped, but the water was hot in the morning when I needed it to be. Yes, there is some truck traffic, and yes, you're next to a gas station, but if you're a light sleeper, you should have your own earplugs. I fell asleep just fine with headphones on, never heard a thing, and slept through the night just fine on the comfortable bed. Room had a nice heater vent, because it was still in the 20s overnight. I also kept the ceiling fan running on low to circulate the air. I really have no complaints. Always wanted to stay here on my frequent trips back and forth on US-97, and I am glad I finally did. read more

I booked this on Expedia well in advance, because of the great price and cute pictures of the rooms. I understood it was an inexpensive option, but it exceeded my low expectations. They texted me to check in online beforehand to "speed up" the check in process, and I am so glad I waited to be sure it was legit. We arrived at about 5:45 pm and walked inside, the door was unlocked and the open sign was lit up. There was a sign on the desk to text a number and someone would come to help us shortly. We texted, and then started to get concerned. Nobody ever came, and while we waited we looked around. Everything was very dusty, and we tried calling every number we could find to no avail. We started looking around the place outside and there were huge piles of bedding or something, I don't know it looked like an abandoned haunted house. There was a weird little structure with a fake deer skull and one of the windows of it was a gas station refrigerator door! So we started getting creeped out, no one was around, we checked in the lobby one last time, and saw all the keys to every room, labeled with the name of the room including ours, just out under the keyboard of the dusty laptop. Everything was weird and we decided it seemed actually a dangerous place to stay. This is either a scam or a trap or both. read more

This place is RAD! If you're ever road-tripping it and happen to go through Chemult, you need to stop here and experience the great hospitality and rooms they have here. Upon getting our room, I asked what the history of this place was, because it resembled an old house or brothel. I was told is was an old boarding house, built in the 1910's to house the railroad workers in the area. Well, this made sense since the railroad was right behind the house about 100 yards. Very cool. All of the rooms are actual "rooms" in this giant old boarding house. They are all equipped with modern amentities such as microwave, coffee machine, tv, shower, bath, etc etc. So it's very comfy. The cool factor is that you're staying in an old boarding house with a bunch of cool history behind it. We opted to get the best room they had with a retro Jacuzzi tub, pink with gold handles, and very deep. This tub could fit the starting line-up of the Portland Trail Blazers it's so deep! And it comes with a free bottle of champagne, which was great. We were given a very modest rate, great service, great hospitality, and a cool place to stay. I would recommend this place to anyone! read more

I didn't really know what to expect since I'd never even heard of Chemult! I just knew it was the nearest affordable lodging near Crater Lake. After a day of road tripping with my son and pup we were tired! We were greeted warmly and quickly shown to our room, which was clean, adorable and comfortable. My family stayed in the largest room that fit 8 people. There were 3 queen beds, a plus a pull out couch. It was $109 with tax for one night. There are at least 2 other rooms that fit 4 that cost around $60-80 per night, I don't remember exactly. Check out at 11 AM. The goods: There was a full sized fridge, a microwave, a sink area, and a tv. You can borrow DVDs from a collection at the entrance. There are two heaters that are strong. Hot water and tea and hot chocolate packets and paper cups are free next to the front counter. The bads: Got tons of bed bug bites from the pillow on the pullout bed. The shower was incredibly hot, not easy to use and uneven spray. The bathroom is tiny; there's a shower stall, a toilet, a mirror and no sink, so you have to brush your teeth in the sink in the room. Some of the outlets were very loose and didn't work. Strong "old people" smell when we first walked in but it went away after we ate Subway that we bought across the street. There's a motel across the street that has a room for 4 for $49 per night, but this lodge has much more accommodations. read more

Key take away: it is NOT in a quiet location -- it is across the busy highway from a truck stop, the parking lot is shared with a gas station, and there is a major railroad behind it. To add insult, the motel rooms are not air conditioned and the hot summer evening forced us to endure a long night of trucks braking and accelerating for the truck stop. The overall cleanliness of the room was poor -- carpets had that sticky feeling and there was trash and large large dust bunnies visible behind the night stand. At least the bathroom was adequately cleaned. The hot-water in the building vacillated between ice cold and scalding hot -- literally dangerous while taking a shower. The decor was sparse the with a very small TV & VCR perched atop a small shelf. There was a fridge, microwave and coffee pot. On the plus side, it was cheep -- you get what you pay for. Perhaps the interior hotel rooms are better kept, but, don't let them fool you into thinking this is a B&B -- the meager "breakfast" of scones and juice would hardly be worth paying extra for. read more

Very hospitable. Has everything you could need and more. The rooms are cozy, the beds are ridiculously comfortable, and the deck is really nice. It's right by a small market for items you might need. Across the street is a Pilot and Subway. Next to Pilot is a great diner for breakfast and lunch. Most everything is walking distance of you don't want to drive around. We had an easy drive to Crater Lake for two days and stayed in two different rooms which were both very comfortable. I'm glad that we didn't waste our time on the Crater Lake Lodge; there would have been very limited options up there. read more

We reserved the two room suite and arrived with a freak storm that knocked out the electricity in the entire town. The owner and "staff" (pretty sure they were family) were great. Gave us lamps, water, towels...you name it and brought us up to our weird and wonderful rooms...truly unique and excellently funky! Funky and weird but in a good way. The place was clean and the only think it reeked of was local history and stories of past travelers. We all loved it!! read more

Although a mediocre place to stay ( kind of run down) I had originally thought it ok until I got home and realized they charged my credit card for damages that didn't occur. It's sad that a mom and pop is so desperate for money that they intentionally rip people off. I would not stay here, and I recommend that no one else either. It's a Podunk rip off. read more
