I intend to stay here every time I visit Crater Lake. This place was a blast from the past in the best way. It's not a resort, and that's the point. Funky little roadside motel but a great deal if you're visiting crater lake or just passing through. Wood paneling everywhere in the rooms, tube tv, VHS players. It's a hipster's paradise. It's old but the rooms are well kept. They have an extensive VHS tape collection and let you borrow any tape you want for the night. Highly recommend the original Star Wars trilogy. The family that runs the place is very nice and accommodating. No online booking, so you have to call. *horrified gasp* I know, it's hard for us millennials to comprehend life before the internet. But you can use your pocket picture machine to do this. If you need further instructions you might need a brain scan. Anyways, I Would definitely stay here again. My wife, sister-in-law and I found this motel to be one of the last affordable places with availability on our quick trip to Crater Lake. Check-in was easy and included a wall of VHS tapes to watch in your room if you want. We picked out "Good Morning Vietnam" to watch. We were put in room number 8 (out of 9). The room had a bit of a stale smell, but it went away after we left the windows open for a bit. Room was clean and quiet. While we were eating dinner with our door open, we saw the resident cat run by with a mouse in it's mouth that it caught in the field behind the motel. Free entertainment! Then the resident dog walked by and stood at our door waiting for us to pet it, which of course we did. Bathroom was fine, shower had solid hot water and pressure. Decor was dated but homey feeling. The beds were comfortable though my wife and and I did sink to the middle and had to readjust a few times in the night. If you are someone who likes luxury stay, obviously look elsewhere, but if you want a safe and chill spot for a night or two then I recommend this place. I would stay here again. read more

I chose this hotel based on its proximity to Crater Lake; it was just about 30 minutes (or 15miles) away from the North Entrance. The motel is located right at the junction of 97 and 138. If you're along 97, make the turn to 138 and the motel will be to your left. If you're coming from 138, it's on the right side just before you reach 97. On the day of our arrival, I called to let them know that we won't be checking in till about 10pm. Sheila, the owner, just told us to ring the bell and knock in case the door is locked. She was still up when we arrived and she checked us in promptly. Make sure you read the receipt especially if you're staying more than a night! It turned out she only charged me for a night even though she knew we were staying 2 nights. On hindsight, no wonder she told us to check back with her the following night when we return from Crater Lake. Of course we didn't because we were too tired to remember. When we were checking out, she explained that she only charged one night and casually asked if we wanted to charge the second night on the same card. It was embarrassing to think that we were ready to drive away without realizing we haven't paid for our second night. Sheila handled the situation so well that it removed any awkwardness. I normally would have rated this motel 2 stars because 1) the toilet's water pressure was so bad that you have to flush A LOT of times to clear the bowl, 2) the tub looked dirty because of grout 3) the electrical outlets were practically useless because the plugs kept falling off. I did mention the toilet issue to Sheila when we checked out. She was thankful for bringing it to her attention and said she will have someone look at it right away. On the bright side, they have1) a mini fridge and microwave in the unit, 2) free coffee and pastries in the morning, 3) free wifi, and 4)relatively cheap rate. But I think Sheila is really the saving factor in this whole scenario. She is friendly and genuinely nice that I can't help but root for her and her continued success. read more

The room was clean and we got a good nights sleep. It is only about 20-25 minutes from the entrance to Crater Lake, so it was ideal. The decor is like my childhood home in the 70's but that was fine. The mattress could have been more firm. read more

We went to Crater Lake a couple of weeks ago during heavy snow winter season. We stayed here at the Whispering pines motel. Dog friendly motel, only a 10 fee per stay, not per night which is great. It has a late 80s early 90s feel to the place. Every room has a VHS player and the main office has TONS of VHS movies you can borrow for free. They also have a little market attached to the main office. Very peaceful place, nothing fancy, but great location. Owners are super nice too. read more

THIS PLACE IS READY TO FALL DOWN. It's says it was built in the 1950 and I am sure there has NO renovation since then. Outside visible dry rot on exterior, broken concrete sidewalks room doors with bedroom door locks, no deadbolts. Inside the room, circa 1950 furnishings, no A/C, visible mold and mildew and it comes with a half dozen flies. Poor internet (router has to be rebooted multiple times). Continental breakfast consists of make your own coffee and store bought stale pasties, no juice, no place to sit down. Upon check-in, I was greeted by two dogs jumping on me. I am sure this place would not pass either a health or building inspection. read more

I have some mixed feelings about this property. The owner and staff seem to be lovely people; very helpful and friendly. The issue, is, however, that the property needs a lot of work to come up to even basic standards. In the room I had there was a lot of wear and some water damage as well as very leaky plumbing. The location is a good one since there is nothing else in the area. With Crater Lake so near by, I'm sure the investment in getting things in good form will pay dividends. read more

Randomly chose to stay the night here and absolutely loved it. We stayed in room 8. In all ways, this place is a time capsule, and I hope it never changes. Do not expect luxury - expect a clean roadside motel room built from decades old locally sourced wood paneling, with an amazing movie selection to choose from, and a close drive to amazing nature all around you. The owner is super sweet and is aware and respectful of Covid-related concerns, and you can buy ice for your cooler and other necessities from her in the office. There is a bbq/picnic area in front available for use, and each room has a microwave and mini fridge for your own food/bev. Pet-friendly, and most importantly, welcoming to people of all colors and identities, unlike some other establishments in the area. Thank you for a good nights sleep, and good conversation over coffee before taking off for our adventures. I will certainly be back! read more

I never thought I'd be giving 5 stars for a cheap motel but Sheila and her crew made my experience here such a positive one, that I feel that I owe them at least that much. Did you ever see the film "Bagdad Cafe"? About a diner/motel in the middle of no where, run by a group of colorful characters, and while the place has seen better days, it still has a heart of gold? That's exactly what "Whispering Pines" reminds me of. Lodgings near Crater Lake are slim pickings at best. If staying at the Crater Lake Lodge is beyond your budget and the campground is booked solid, then staying in Chemult might be your best option in terms of proximity, price and convenience. After doing an Internet search and cross-referencing with maps (since I'm not from Oregon), I found Whispering Pines and made reservations based on the days I was going to be there. When I got there, I was a little apprehensive. I was in room 6, and the place looked like it was long past it's prime. The carpet in my room was old and stained, but there was a mini-fridge, microwave, TV. And VCR, all of it in working order and more importantly, clean. (There's a selection of VHS films you can choose from in the front office.) After my first night, whatever worries I might have had, had all disappeared. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean, there are no bedbugs, the washrooms are clean even if the water pressure can be a bit off and Sheila offers a free, continental breakfast in the morning. She makes mini-muffins in the morning, and fruit, other pastries, and tea or coffee are on the offering. They even have Wifi, even if it can be spotty but hey, you are literally in the middle of nowhere and need to realize you're not staying at the Waldorf Astoria in downtown Manhattan. Now the service. Sheila and the small crew who run the motel are among the nicest, most accommodating people I've met on the road. The dogs there are also very friendly. I didn't catch the name of the girl and her boyfriend who also work there but they were very nice and helpful as well. Let me tell you that after a long day of driving epic-long distances, or after a day of exploring Crater Lake, and you're tired and just need to wash off the dust of the ages off of you and rest your aching legs, The Whispering Pines Motel is a safe, clean place, you can't ask for more. If you're visiting Crater Lake and need budget accommodations, stay here and take some time out to get to know the folks here. I'm glad I did. read more

Cozy, Friendly and Excellently Affordable near Crater Lake... We stayed here for 2 nights while cross-country skiing at Crater Lake and would definitely stay here again in the winter or the summer. The owners were very friendly and accommodating for our needs, including sharing some of their home appliances. Everything in the rooms was clean and well-insulated, and will continue looking great as they move forward with many improvements and upgrades. Located at a main highway intersection, it was very convenient for getting there as well as being accessible by well-plowed roads. Despite the passing traffic and rooms facing the roadway, it was not too noisy inside at night and the highway was far enough from the front patios and playground. Despite it's distance from the winter access to Crater Lake (south entrance only), the affordability and ease of getting in and out made it a convenient stay and a great bang for the buck. read more

If you're expecting the Hilton you'll be disappointed. If you're expecting a great bargain, you'll have it. The building is old and needs a little TLC, but the rooms are spacious and very clean! We asked for a coffee pot in our room and were given one when we checked it. The owners were friendly and helpful. Opened some windows, turned on the fan (hot day), pulled out our cheese and wine - wonderful evening after a long drive. The breakfast will be packaged donuts and muffins made fresh in the morning - and coffee. Internet was very easy to access. We're here for one more night and very pleased with the accommodations. As I said, it's not the hilton, but it is outstanding considering the price! read more

On the plus side, the sheets were clean and we got to have a hot shower. On the negative side, the place in falling apart, needs a new roof, new carpeting, and could really use a full makeover. The location and price were right, but I would not stay here again. I usually stay at 3 star hotels and if I have to, a 2 star. This was realistically a 1 star place. OK, I believe you need to rate on the level of lodging you are receiving as advertised. So I give Whispering Pines a 4. Is this the Ritz? Absolutely not. Is this a roadside Motel as stated? Absolutely. We arrived around 8:30 at night and went to the check in office. We were happily greeted by a woman whose name I cannot remember. Our dog was also pleasantly greeted, especially by the resident dog there, Karma. The check in building also houses a little breakfast section in the morning, where you can pick up a homemade muffin, pastries and coffee/hot chocolate. Also in this area is quite an interesting and overstuffed market. It's kind of a cross between a general and variety store... Our family enjoys eclectic experiences, so the outdated rooms with wood paneling and orange floral comforters were quite exciting. Plus we had the opportunity to educate our children on VHS movies! Each room has one and there is a large free video selection in the office. Being directly next to the road, I thought the road noise might be an issue. Surprisingly, it was not. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are very inexpensive and they also do allow dogs for an additional $10 pet fee. read more

This is an old school byway motel. If you want a Hyatt or a Hilton, then you are out of luck because this is not that and you wont find that kind of hotel in this area. Between Klamath Falls and La Pine, this is the standard and just about all the options in the area are on par with Whispering Pines. The review of 8/12/14 that compares this place to Bagdad Café is spot on. It is a basic, and though worn and showing its age, clean and decent place to spend a night. And if you have little kids that have been trapped in a car, there is an area that looks like a daycare front yard. Nothing fancy, but a good place for the little ones to play. It is about 20 miles from the North edge of Crater Lake and after a long day in the park this is the closest bed heading north through central Oregon, and if you are staging to go into the park from the North, this is as close as you get. It is entirely possible to go from a view of the lake to this hotel in 25 min. Points of note: The only restaurant within 10 miles is across the street and has spotty hours. It may not open until 9ish in the morning and may close before 7pm. The motel has a mini-market where you can get some things if needed, but dining options in the early morning or after 7pm are 10 miles North in Chemult, and even there selections are thin. **Also - Free Wi-Fi read more

OK this hotel has a new owner and she's great. She has upgraded and there is wifi in the rooms. The place is very clean and it's still the best bargain in Oregon! The rooms are still very dated, but if you're going to be out during the day enjoying the gorgeous mountains here then a comfortable bed and clean bathroom is what you're getting. Also, we walked across the highway to the diner there--really pretty good diner food. Burgers, soup, etc. But if you are allergic to MN Vikings memorabilia you might want to give it a pass :) read more

First off the pictures we originally saw did not look like the place we arrived at. Next, there was no one in the office and we had to call the woman owner from a note on the window. She arrived 15 minutes later and told us she did not have our reservation because the person who was going to buy the motel from her, who we allegedly talked to, took all the valuables and ran. She happened to have 1 room available for 2 nights like we had reserved and acted like she was doing us a favor. The room was old and smelled funny and did not seem to be updated since the Brady bunch stayed there. The carpet was dirty, stained and had burn marks all over. The bedspread was stained and our 10 inch TV did not work at all. Our shower dribbled water and when we called the owner to ask for help she told us "there is nothing I can do, sorry" and was clearly annoyed by the tone of her voice. She told us there was no more rooms for us to move to that night to have a working shower but the 2 rooms next to us obviously had one in them that night and did have people in them the following night. And, when we asked them if their shower worked they said "yes". She lied it seems. We were stuck there for 2 nights as a relay race was happening locally and nothing else was available within almost 100 miles. She never came by to check on us in person when she was there and did nothing to fix our shower the 2nd day while we were gone even though she is the maid that cleans the rooms and did clean ours while we were at Crater Lake. We stayed in this motel for one night on our way to Crater Lake. It's hard to find this place in the night as it is not in the city of Chemult but about 10 miles out, at an intersection. Nothing much around that area. First, the pros: We stayed in a regular room (not suite, at least we didnt ask for one) which had wood panelled walls and a microwave in the room (in addition to tiny tv, a sofa and leather chair in addition to the bed and writing table/chair). The place was run by a little old lady who seemed helpful and gave us info about Crater Lake. There was running hot water. There is a small attached store that sells necessities and a handful of camping supplies. Oh, and the place is D.I.R.T cheap: $50 per night. Now, the cons: The place is very bare bones. Yes, despite the microwave and leather chair. The bedsheet had a hole in it. The lights had insects and grime caked around them. The bathroom window was dirty, the bathtub etc. looked old and moldy. The shower had extremely low water pressure. The water first trickled out, and when I turned it up all the way, it trickled a little faster. Also the fact that its located in the middle of nowhere (not in the town of Chemult) might pose a problem for you if you want to buy stuff or find a good restaurant etc. Overall: go for it if you want to rough it out and pay less. It's a bed to sleep in and a hot water shower, nothing to sneeze at. But luxury - or even really comfort - its not. read more

Did I stay in a different motel than these other reviewers? We reserved a room here on a Saturday night, and they wouldn't let us cancel (we were considering just driving come that night instead) so we grudgingly drove into the town of Chemult and checked in. Upon entering the lobby, the smell of cigarette smoke is overpowering. The "store" is just mess. I got at least 2 flea bites while I was in the lobby checking in. The room, lit by fluorescent lighting, has stained carpet, sheets, and the curtain barely stays closed. The dirt on the bathroom floor is so gross and the wood walls in the bathroom are caked with mold. The futon was old and discolored, and the room smelled. We considered just leaving and driving home that night but stuck it out. Only one other person rented a room there that night. I get why they they wouldn't take back our reservation. My advice would be stay far away from this motel and everything else in Chemult! There are homeless tents everywhere! read more

Whispering pines is fantastic! Sheila is incredibly hospitable, nice, and helpful. We got to help ourselves to hot chocolate right when we arrived on a cold night and she has literally anything you need for camping, traveling, and life in her store. The rooms have VHS players, and there is an awesome collection to rent (for free). The beds were comfy, room was clean, and heating worked well! In the morning we had fresh-baked muffins with real bananas and she gave us some fantastic travel advice. Love ya Sheila!! read more

The service is best I ever had in a hotel/motel/B&B or hostel. I'm not talking about 5 stars of course, I am talking about simple things. Starting from arrival. We arrived REALLY late. 3am it was. And lady in the office still WAITED for us. Let me repeat: she did not sleep behind a back door, she waited for last couple to arrive (we called to say we are going to be late, somewhere close to midnight, we said). Second: the room. It's roomy. First impression: wow, in California, Utah, Arizona we would expect its cost double of what we've paid. One part (size of a room in a Redding's motel) has TV, small refrigerator and couch. Another part - queen bed, night table, mirror. Everything is clean: bathroom, floors, carpets, table, glass, mirror, windows, curtains. Clean it is. Some fisherman theme design on the wall: simple, authentic and cute. We haven't tried breakfast because we woke up late and had barely enough time to drive to the lake's boat station to get on 9:30am trip, so I can't tell, but I saw lady doing some real cooking, not just cheap stuff for coffee. Overall I want to thank staff for their work, it's quite rare these days to see somebody doing their job seriously well and indeed customers oriented. Carpet was old and stained, bathroom was clean although rust stains on bathtub, I found a fancy cupcake or toothpick on the bedspread (not sure how that would get there if they changed the sheets underneath).... But, shower was hot and good pressure, beds were comfortable and looked clean, bedsheets and pillowcases smelled clean. The check-in lady was nice and helpful, the price was right too (ok, it was GREAT) ($66 for 4 people in a 2 bed room). Free continental breakfast included (fresh muffins, fruit, juice, coffee), WiFi, tv (with cable tv) and vcr in room. Also the tap water tasted great! read more

Needed a cheap resting place for the night after a long drive with a restless toddler. We saw the little playground from the highway which looked perfect for the little guy who had been stuck in the car for 6 hours non stop. We stopped, asked how much for the night, they said $40, but when it came time to pull out the credit card it suddenly became $49, for wifi and breakfast. Toddler played for an hour on the playground which was was worth the stop for sure. The front desk of the hotel is hooked to the little store which had a huge selection of random grocery items, quite a large selection for being such a small place. They also had a large selection of VHS movies you can borrow during your stay as each room had an old school VCR! We picked out a couple of tapes for our son to watch which he really enjoyed. The room is quite dated, but the bed was comfy and everything was in working order. The room we stayed in #5 had a nice large futon couch, refrig and microwave. The room could use a deep cleaning, window sills were very dirty, corners of room hadn't been cleaned very good and carpets needed shampooing. Bathroom was clean. Breakfast was a random selection of fruits and packaged muffins and pastries, coffee, perfect start to the day. Manager/owner was friendly and made us feel welcome during our stay. read more

It's one of the very few accomodation within a reasonable distance from Crater Lake, therefore it has a sense to lodge there. Of course you do not have to expect services or a new furnished room... but being cheap does not mean to me that you have to expect rust everywhere in bathroom. Bath tub, bath tent and sink were all covered! Even during my shower I could feel rust odour and flavour! I strongly suggest the owners to fix the pipes and remove the rust .... read more
