All the hotels appear to be your typical hotels you find along the freeway when traveling which is interesting as Faribault seams like a charming town once you depart the freeway a couple of miles. However, I came across this hotel on Yelp and thought why not try it out. It is located on the Shattuck-St campus which is just stunning. Beautiful architecture and grounds. When we walked in, Alicia at the front desk greeted us. Alicia was very friendly and gave us the rundown if the property. The hotel itself is quaint with a handful of rooms. There is a dining area you can access at any time for snacks and beverages. Our room was upstairs which you can access by stairs or elevator. Our windows looked out onto the Shattuck grounds. Quite nice! The king room is large with an extra sitting area with a large desk, couch and lounge chair. There is a coffee station, wardrobe closet, dresser, large wall mirror, iron. The bathroom is also spacious with a shower that has a bench should one need it. The bathroom had plenty of towels and accessories and appeared to be handicap accessible. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. Is this an older hotel, yes, it has some very interesting history you can read all about. But it is not a modern sterile hotel. It is older and charming. We had everything we needed for a comfortable place to stay. And, the price was very reasonable. I would definitely recommend booking here as opposed to a regular hotel that you will pay more to stay and have less atmosphere.

I always think I'm ahead of the game when it comes to Inn's and B&B's, but I'm always surprised to find new places I've never heard of, especially when they are located in a town I've never visited. Last month, I hopped on Google to search for my next trip, and scanned on over to Faribault, where the pickings were slim. I hovered over an Inn on the property of an International boarding school (in Minnesota?). I figured it was private and almost clicked away, but was drooling over the photos and had to investigate. Sure enough, this is an Inn, open to the public, and tucked away so wonderfully, you'll feel far far away. The hostess was kind and helped me reserve a room over the phone, but you can also reserve online. There are simply not enough photos on their website...this place is gorgeous and spacious. It was built in 1817 as a library, then a dorm. then an infirmary for a school, and was recently restored and renovated in 2013. It has all of the modern amenities one could want, and yet they've preserved the beauty of the old architecture and incorporated it as much as they can. I reserved a Single Studio for $109 a night (a steal), which comes with a complimentary grab + go style breakfast, as well as coffee, tea and punch. The breakfast area seats around 10 comfortably, and we only ran into 3 other people in the morning. The Inn is also rented out for small weddings and company meetings, but we didn't wander into those areas. The hostess leaves in the evening, so we had the place to ourselves and were encouraged to walk around and make ourselves at home. We didn't notice any unwanted noise or disturbances, even with several cars in the lot. Note that you need your key to get back in after 10pm. We were upgraded to a King Suite at no extra charge, simply because the room was available. I was impressed and grateful for the wonderful customer service. The room was HUGE, and had a sweet sitting area, with a cute green couch, and flatscreen, as well as a flatscreen around the corner across from the comfy bed. It had a large armoire and desk, and big windows. The room was cozy, and we noticed the couch and ottoman could be converted to a hideaway bed if needed. The bathroom was large, but the shower was small - it could definitely have held a tub and bigger shower, but was fine for us. It was clean and modern, and I loved the smell of the toiletries made in NYC. Definitely take a walk around the grounds - we walked down an unmarked path down to the river and train tracks to explore a bit. I saw only a handful of students on the grounds, and wonder what it would look like while school was in session - however you are not in the middle of the school grounds so you have you own privacy. For the price, the comfort, and the location, this place is absolutely the best in Faribault, and I will definitely be returning next time I head south for an escape.

When I was checking in I was asked if I wanted a room on the lower floor or upper- I chose upper so I could avoid the noise of footsteps above me... little did I know there was no elevator so I had to carry all of my luggage up a flight of stairs. After entering the room I used the bathroom- which did not have a working exhaust fan. A bit later my daughter spilled some water on the floor- the white washcloth turned black from wiping it up. Not to mention there were very few bathroom linens to choose from. To end the night we were going to use the pool- there were a couple of girls in the pool when we entered who warned us that they just found a broken glass in the pool and we're trying to find help to clean it. My daughter was already disappointed in this experience but they still had a hot tub- the color of the water in the hot tub was completely yellowish/brownish so I had to tell her we were absolutely not going in there either. Had we not been completely exhausted already we would have left immediately, I had booked our stay for 2 nights but didn't even stay the second night because it was so bad. We woke up, definitely didn't even consider checking out the breakfast, and got the heck out of there. Since I booked on Expedia I didn't even bother trying to cancel the second night or get a refund- BAD

My bad? Clearly. Customer service at Boarders Inn? The worst I've ever encountered. Do yourself a favor and steer clear until they get things figured out.
