I contracted with Mark after submitting a pro referral request through Home Depot…read more I am in North Tahoe and Mark assured me this would not be an issue despite coming from Sacramento. I was hesitant but he was adamant that the driving was not an issue. Pros: Mark and his team finished the job ahead of schedule, though it did seem like they rushed through the last two rooms so that he could finish early. Pricing was very reasonable for the job. I was quoted $3 a square foot. Neutral comment: Materials - Mark asked me to purchased the materials instead of him doing it. This seemed weird, especially since he gets a discount, which I was not able to access. He did provide shopping lists with the product SKUs, however, he overestimated on some materials and under estimated on other, so additional Home Depot trips needed to be made. On top of this (and this was more my error than his), because the paint I ordered was using a base not available in store, despite it being what came up using the SKU on the Home Depot website. Therefore, I had to buy more paint than needed and you cannot return "tinted" paint. I do feel like this error could have been avoided if Mark purchased supplies for the job and the got reimbursed. Cons: Work - edges were not cleaned up and the previous paint shows on the wall where the tape like was on the wall. Tape and trash were left in every room and on the walls in some places. An area in a door frame was even "forgotten" and left unpainted. Payment - Mark sprung several payment asks on me, which is not easy when the service provider requires cash. He asked for a deposit, which I luckily had enough cash on hand to provide but it would have been nice to know this would be requested ahead of time. He then requested partial payment each day, even though we had not agreed on a payment plan and had discussed payment when the job was complete. Each time, I told him no, the job needed to be completed before payment. I could tell he wasn't happy and I do feel like he rushed through the job once I did not oblige. If he expected partial payment, it would have been nice to have this made clear from the start. He also hadn't actually completed any of the rooms before his first ask. Additionally, he should have provided a list/receipt of work completed to date as required by California State Law for partial payments. I paid in cash at the completion of the work, as we had agreed upon when I signed the contract. While he did amend the contact to say "paid in full," I am still waiting for the receipt I requested. Timeliness/Communicationr - When we signed the contract, he said he planned to arrive between 9-9:30 to avoid traffic and asked if he could "stay late" and work until 6pm each day. Mark was consistently late and also cancelled very last minute one day. He kept changing the hours he would work after we started the job, arriving after 10 two days, after 11 one day, and after 12 another day. The only day that he stayed after 5pm was when he arrive after 12pm. It was the days he knew I would not be home when they arrived that he came late, not informing me of his delayed arrival until after I prompted him and asked if he had arrived. Furthermore, I originally tried to give him no weekend work days, he then insisted on coming both Saturday and Sunday. He then told me he would be late on Saturday because he had to go to another job in Fairfield (opposite direction from me). I again insisted that he work Sunday and Monday instead, as we had agreed upon a Tuesday completion for work. He insisted he "needed" to come on both Saturday and Sunday to finish the job because he agreed to start a new job on Monday (despite our contract technically being until Tuesday). Due to arrive on Saturday at 11AM - I get a message from him at 10:45 saying he wasn't going to make it due to an emergency. I just feel the communication could have been better here. Given that he was coming two hours away, I wanted to give some grace here but it was frustrating that the communication was not initiated by him when he obviously was late or didn't plan to arrive.

Per Bob's response:…read more Bob claimed that I turned his workers away when they showed up as scheduled on multiple occasions. This is not accurate. On several occasions Bob sent workers on days when I had not been informed they would be coming (Saturday and Sundays) . Although this was unexpected, I still welcomed them and allowed them to work. While not expected I thought it was a sign that they were ready to get the job done quickly. Bob also scheduled a potential replacement tile tradesman to come look at the job without notifying me ahead of time. I had to leave church in order to meet him, and I did so because I wanted to keep the project moving forward. The only time I asked his crew not to come was when our family was on vacation from the end of July through the beginning of August. This trip had been planned months in advance, and the bathroom was originally supposed to be finished by the end of May, so there should not have been any scheduling conflict. In contrast, there were many days where I expected people to come to my home to work and nobody showed up. Sometimes for multiple days in a row, leaving my bedroom without a door, and debris all over my bathroom. Bob also claimed that I requested nearly a dozen changes during the course of the project. This is not correct. The only adjustments that occurred were either suggestions made by his tradesmen (such as adding a transition between the tile and carpet) or "pivots" needed to address mistakes made. In those situations, I tried to find solutions that would save both time and money. Once the project was bid, we did not request changes to the original scope other than those mentioned above. I do not understand why Bob made this claim in his response. Bob also stated that the tile pattern was extremely complex. As can be seen in the photos, the floor consists of hex mosaic tiles and the walls are standard 3x6 subway tile. Both of these tile styles have been widely used for over 100 years. We discussed the tile selections before Bob submitted his bid. In fact, this same tile combination was installed in another bathroom by Bob's crew the previous year, and it turned out beautifully. Aside from a small issue with the floor that was quickly corrected, the finished bathroom looks fantastic. I love that bathroom, which is why I hired Bob again for our master bathroom project. Because of that positive experience, I find it surprising that he now describes this project as extremely complex. Based solely on our first bathroom project with that crew, I would have recommended Bob without hesitation. Bob also claimed that I did not give them the opportunity to fix the grout issues on the floor. I have text message threads showing that I requested these repairs several times and it was not corrected. Eventually, the situation became tense. Bob even told me that his workers did not like me. He later walked that statement back and said only his foreman was frustrated with me. At that point, I did not want to continue asking for the same repairs repeatedly and risk further conflict with the foreman, so I ultimately accepted the result and moved forward with finishing the job. (aside from his foreman being frustrated with the situation, I found all of the people that came to work at my house to be very nice and enjoyable people). Bob has stated that he is confident the shower is completely waterproof. However, the corner of the built-in shower niche has pulled away from the wall, leaving a large crack and gap in the grout. I have had to recaulk this area twice. I hope that there is no water behind the wall, but the issue is concerning. Additionally, there is a screw in the shower faucet that can be pulled out because it is not threaded into anything. I have not yet had time to investigate this further, but it raises additional concerns about the integrity of the installation.
