Sadly, I can no longer recommend this company. Since the business was sold, the quality of their service has deteriorated significantly. We went from gardeners who "maintained" the landscape, to gardeners who blow and go. No mowing, since we have no grass. It's really unfortunate. read more

I can't stress what a terrible company this is. I planted a tree with my own hands 8 years ago. The bird of paradise grew to be 30ft tall. We were doing some renovations and asked them to come clean it up (remove the old flowers) and cut one of the trucks that had grown out. We came home to find that our 30 ft tree had been completely cut down. I broke down in tears. Benny, the owner of the company hung up the phone on me and my husband several times when we confronted him. We sent him video footage of the day he came by to asses the project where we tell him specifically to only cut on of the trucks and clean up the dead flowers. He has now blocked both of our phones. It is one of the most unprofessional companies we have ever come across. This was an irreplaceable tree with so much meaning to me. I am so sad. Strongly discourage anyone from using them. read more

I found Daniel on Angies list about 5 years ago, and he had been taking good care of my mom's yard and landscaping. His crew has always been reliable and the yard looks great, so I decided to try him for my own yard landscaping. After 5 years with my gardener, the yard lwas seriously deteriorating. The edging was all coming out, the sod was almost dead and my irrigation system was falling apart and barely doing the job. I asked Daniel to assess the landscaping and make a proposal. He made me a good offer and we struck a deal. Over the next few weeks he removed my dead lawn, roto-tilled and graded my large front, side and back lawns. He completely redesigned my irrigation system, repaired the defective heads and valves and made sure everything would be adequately watered. Then he installed my hardscape edging, planted some plants and installed sod. He has followed up for the past six months to make sure everything is getting established. Daniel makes sure the grass is fertilized regularly and any broken or defective sprinklers or valves get handled immediately. Daniel is a serious professional and approaches each job with a certain intensity that may seem a bit aloof. I have come to understand how seriously he takes his business--and I have been happy to finally find a reliable gardener who doesn't constantly create drama and mayhem. His prices for maintenance are also in line with all of the recent quotes I've obtained. DC Gardener is approximately the 5th gardener I have used in the last 15 years, so I feel qualified to give him my highest recommendation. read more

I would suggest reading through a lot of these Yelp reviews as they would have saved me a lot of time. I have seen a lot of the same issues that others have. Daniel came out to give us a quote. He sounded reputable and knowledgeable enough to get the job done. He said it would be $600 to haul away old wood and clean up our yard to get it back into shape. It would then be $145 a month for maintenance. He also said in the future he could see the front yard to help it grow back along with a few other suggestions. During the initial clean up one of his managers (who was very nice and more on top of things than Daniel) did notify us that in order to fix a few sprinkler issues he found it would be an extra $200. We told him that was okay. After the clean up with complete Daniel calls us back. He says the job was a lot more work than he thought and was trying to charge us more. When you charge for a project it is important to ensure you are charging enough, and as new things come up let the customer know what the charges would be to do the extra work. He decided to have them seed the front yard during the cleanup and charge us an extra $250 for this as well. I would have done this myself if I knew what the charge would be. We told him we would not be paying for things we were not aware of, and also we would not pay extra because it took longer than he through to clean up our yard as that is not fair that he didn't quote us accurately. He agreed to only charge us the $600 clean up fee and the $200 for fixing the sprinklers since that is what we agreed to. He then proceeded to add the seeding charge into the first months fee again without coming to an agreement. On top of this, the work is so-so. I have a section of rocks on one side of my backyard spilling into the grass which looks sloppy. After 4 weeks of service, I ended up taking care of this myself. After seeding they also asked us to turn the sprinklers on twice as long but keep it every other day. In my research I have found that you actually need to make sure you are watering everyday to take full advantage of new seeding. They do a decent enough job cleaning up leaves and making sure walkways are clear of dirt. That's about where the service ends. In summary, their attention to detail is average or below, and their business practices are unethical. I would suggest finding one of the countless other services who charge the same but want to work with you ethically and take good care of your lawn to start a long-term business relationship. read more

Under new management. Ignore all the old good reviews, the company was sold and the new owners don't care. They let my grass die and my garden become filled with weeds and overgrown. When I asked them to trim the hedges and weed they sent me a quote for thousands of dollars to fix their negligence. When they came they simply mowed and blew leaves into my hedges, they never raked the leaves and removed them. It was so messy!. They claimed there was nothing to trim or weed when my green bin went unused for months. Hired a new guy and he overflowed my green bin so clearly they were wrong. Told them I wanted to cancel service. Asked if I had paid for January and could I get a refund for the last week. Was told on the phone that I'd paid for January. Then they charged me and claimed I had not. Lazy and money grubbing. Not worth the outrageously high monthly fee. read more

I hired DC Gardening service to replace my front lawn with drought tolerant landscaping. They did a really nice job and finished on schedule. There was an issue with one of the drip irrigation lines a few weeks later but they fixed it a couple days after I contacted them. I plan to hire them again for a future project. read more

HORRIBLE horrible horrible service. Cannot say enough bad things about this company. They will not reply to you, I have called so many times about several issues and there has never been any changes. They have completely destroyed some bushes that I worked very hard to grow and I was very proud of, I even had signs out in English AND Spanish asking them not to cut them and they completely ignored the signs and cut them to sticks. One of those bushes was a memorial bush to my god mother. they were not apologetic at all. They repaired my sprinkler system and when it broke they never came out to fix it despite 4 calls & voicemails on the issue. I was told the manager will get back to me and he never did. I finally called and asked that my credit card not be charged at the end of the month for the following month as I no longer wanted their services. I woke up this morning and the gardeners had been out and sure enough my card was charged for this whole month. This is the most frustrating company I have ever worked with. Please do yourselves a favor and do not use this service, look elsewhere & find someone who actually gives a crap. read more

I used DC Gardening Service for about two months for my first house. Daniel came out promptly to check out my yard, quoted us a certain amount of money to repair my sprinklers and informed me of their monthly fee and reprogrammed my sprinkler timer. When I received my next bill, the sprinkler repair was double the quoted amount, and the next month there was an additional charge for fertilizer. I can accept if my yard needs repairs, or additional supplies - I don't think it's acceptable to charge additional money without the customers approval. I cancelled because of this. I have been working with Daniel for a few years now and could not be happier. His team are the absolute best! They turn my soil and trim my trees without any instruction from me. They simply know how to maintain a beautiful and thriving garden. They give me excellent advice and are so humble and helpful. I just really love Daniel's guys. I also recently asked Daniel to make some landscaping improvements to my front yard that he and I have been talking about for years. We spent a good amount of time discussing what I envisioned and he executed it beyond my imagination. It is so sweet, with a rock boarder and flowers that already enhance my butterfly garden. I find myself opening all the blinds in my house just so I can view my beautiful garden. Daniel also installs irrigation systems that have done wonders for my garden and lawn. We live in a very warm climate and need the system to be as effective as possible. He customized it so now all my sprinklers and drip systems are watering effectively and not the sidewalk or driveway - such an improvement! Does not follow instructions. I told him I wanted dirt in the front planter: he laid down mulch and told me it was better than dirt. This is probably true, but not what I wanted or asked for. The worst part of his incursion, however, was his pruning of our peach tree, which he mutilated. The tree later died. read more

I wish I had checked Yelp before reaching out to Daniel. Our request was simple- to cut the grass and weeds down to one level. The only time Daniel was quick to reply... or reply at all for that matter... was when he showed up to see the yard (which is large, but he said it wouldn't be a problem) and quoted $150/month- $37.50/week (no mention of 1/2 off for the first month as his Yelp page says, by the way). He was also very quick to call and get my card info to have on file. I felt it was a lot of $ but again, it's a large yard so it made sense. First week- ONLY the very small areas with grass were cut and the weeds were left to grow. 2nd week I sent a message reminding him/asking him to please cut the weeds down as requested... no response and only a portion of the weeds were cut and the grass was left completely untouched in both the front and back yards. A HUGE section of weeds in the yard had been left to continue growing out of control, and there was no communication on how it would be handled. I'm talking 2-3 ft high at this point. It looked like crop circles in one area. Gave him the benefit of the doubt and figured someone would definitely be back the next day to finish up.... nope. At that point we were done and my boyfriend called to cancel service. Not only was Daniel rude, he tried making excuses and never apologized for the lack of communication or lack of follow through. He complained that the yard was large (wasn't a surprise, he saw it before committing to the job) and made it sound like it had been the plan all along to only touch a portion of the yard every week, so in theory, we would never have a level front or back yard. How does that make any sense? I sent Daniel a final message (so I had it in writing) that he had my permission to charge my card for the two weeks that he came to our home, and in turn, he didn't respond but definitely charged my card for the ENTIRE month. I have already disputed the charge with my bank, as no contract was ever signed and at no point did he disclose that we would be charged for an entire month if service was cancelled at any point. Compensation should not, and will not be provided if work is not done or completed, and even paying 1/2 seems ridiculous given the circumstances. Where is your integrity and work ethic? I have been using the same gardener for several years now but no matter how many times I urged him to improve the quality of my front and backyard, or how much money I gave him, he consistently failed to do much besides planting a few flowers and mowing the grass. I had poor water flow from my sprinklers, grass that looked more like weeds than anything, and the flowers kept dying within just a few weeks after being planted. I finally decided to take the appearance of my home more seriously and searched on Yelp for a reliable professional to redo my irrigation and landscaping. I had 5 people show up at my door to give me an estimate and I interviewed them meticulously. I knew I found the right person for the job just based upon Daniel's professionalism during our first encounter. He was the only person who brought stationary to write notes, create a blueprint of what was to be done, and provide an accurate estimate for everything that was going to take place. No other landscaper came with even a pen, and just blurted out numbers off the top of their heads while briefly telling me what they were going to do. But I was glad when I finally met Daniel, and hired his services for weekly maintenance as well as redoing all of my irrigation and landscaping. The next week, Daniel and his crew came in and started to work on the job with much enthusiasm. They were all affable and very respectful at all times. They redid all the pipes starting from the main water line and neatly installed new pipes alongside my house. Daniel was always available to answer any of my questions and gave me a comprehensive update at the end of each work day. I was amazed to see how my property was gradually looking more like a newly built home just by the changes in the front and backyard. He picked the most beautiful plants and flowers, and the grass looked like the type you see out on a golf course. I'm sure that my property value increased just by having Daniel work his magic. I was very pleased with the end result and paid a very competitive price for everything. Daniel's crew has been coming by every week to do the maintenance, and they leave my home looking as neat as it did when the job was initially complete. By the way, I ran into raccoon problems a week after the new grass had been laid out. They kept rolling the grass up to pick at the worms, which ultimately lead to that part of my grass dying. I took care of the raccoon issue with a trapper and once Daniel saw the parts of the grass that were dead, he told me that his job wasn't to just perform services that were paid, but was to make me a happy client. He brought over new grass and redid the parts that were ruined by the raccoons for free! It's very rare to see such professionalism within the landscaping business. I would highly recommend Daniel to anyone who is looking to make their home into a much more beautiful place to live. read more

I found Daniel on Yelp. We had about 220 square feet of dirt, a badly graded slope and old grass and in 3 weeks he turned it into a magnificent thick and lush green carpet with a gentle slope. He leaves nothing to chance and insists that the sprinkler system works to the best advantage and makes it happen. He comes after the first week to check on the growth and watering and after the second week to check everything and also adjust the time on the sprinklers. He is thorough and professional. I recently hired Daniel after reading reviews on Yelp, and I echo what another reviewer stated. "FINALLY A REAL gardener and not a mow and blow!" He returned my call immediately and met with me the next day. A week later (work completed 10/21/15), Daniel and his crew planted California Drought tolerant plants in an array of colors in our front yard, removed a small dead tree, recommended that I keep my daisies, removed them from the front and replanted them in our side yard. His prices are fair. He and his crew are efficient, professional, punctual and most of all he DOES NOT TRY TO SELL YOU GOODS/SERVICES THAT ARE NOT NEEDED. He does the opposite - HE POINTS OUT WAYS TO SAVE MONEY. Daniel capped off sprinklers that were not necessary, installed bubble lines to make sure new plants get proper amount of water, and decreased watering time on our sprinkler system. I also hired him to take care of weekly maintenance, and his crew was able to begin that process as well - trimming back tall hedges and a tree in backyard. Although he cost's more than our previous gardner $45 more per mo., It's worth it based on service he is providing.
