While in DC and doing some advocacy work for my industry and enjoying the beautiful cherry…read moreblossoms, a group of us sat down inside the House of Representatives cafeteria for a bite to eat in between meeting with Congressmen. This café has just about anything you would want from salads to sushi to pizza to hamburgers. The pizza caught my eye and we were in a hurry so I thought I would give it a try. There were about four different types of pizza to choose from and I chose the veggie pizza maintaining my healthy eating outlook. Unfortunately, the pizza was not that good. There were plenty of vegetables, but the variety was quite limited. There were only three different types of vegetables on it, one of them being onions, which I don't like. There was a lot of cheese and the pizza was on the soggy side. The crust was average.

This is clearly not the kind of place you go to if you're just randomly walking around the city. I…read moresuppose you could go down here if you're a tourist, and there is a congressional souvenir shop down here too. But pretty much anybody here is a member of Congress or works for them. Anyway, it's a cafeteria, and as far as cafeterias go, it's a pretty good one. There's a lot of selection. There's a lot of turnover because for some people, this is the only thing that they can find time to buy and eat. Depending on what time of the day you're here, some of the prepared foods might be a little dried out. But again, if you're going here on a regular basis, you probably know how things work.

I really don't do cafeterias, but this one isn't that bad. I eat here mainly out of convenience. I…read morelike the hot food buffet, particularly the Asian-style dishes. I usually stick with tofu, noodles, and vegetables, and it does the trick. They also do some pretty good fried chicken wings and hush puppies, too though. Not great for vegans, as not all ingredients are listed, some items are often mislabeled and actually contain animal products, and the few core items they do offer change (the addition of egg or cheese, for example). Definitely appreciate the discount after 2 p.m. and I wish the overall prices were a bit lower. It's not like you are really saving money by eating here. However, there's nothing that great in the area to eat, so I don't mind coming here, as I'm not really missing out on anything else.

Of course, you need your government badge to enter the building, but at least if you don't work in this particular building, security here isn't nearly as "YOU HEARD ME...SPREAD YOUR CHEEKS AND LIFT YOUR SACK!" as the HUD building--I never knew HUD was that crucial to national security or anything. But I digress. This place has a large selection: hot/cold bars, deli section, pizza, burgers made-to-order, blah-blah-blah. The salad bar is pretty damn good too. However, for some reason, I always gravitate toward the carved turkey and mashed potatoes. I don't know why--I mean, it's okay and all, but...hmm. Whatever. *Warning* This place is pretty expensive, so don't let anyone fool you. You can easily drop $10-13 without blinking...on a salad and a Snapple! That's probably why I often forget about this place. Decent food though.

I may not have had the biggest variety of food here, but I have been enough to give a fair opinion. When you go inside the main entrance of the Nat Geo museum, continue straight past the elevators and through the courtyard, you'll arrive at the cafeteria on the other side to the left! They offer a variety of tacos, burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, and other items! My personal favorite is the falafel burger with sweet potato fries, if they haven't run out. This burger is a thick chickpea patty that is topped with pickled red onions, tzatziki and freshly sliced avocado (not just one slice, there's usually three or four). Places are usually stingy when it comes to avocados, so this makes me so happy! The availability of the fries is hit or miss, since the place closes at 2:00 and I usually don't get there until 1:30. They also have some snacks, drinks, plenty of condiments, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The cooks and cashiers are all friendly, and the discount that comes with working nearby really comes in handy! I am looking forward to coming back many times and trying some more food out.

Their food is okay and freshness is somewhat questionable. However, the food is relatively cheap. You can either get food by the pound or order from the sandwich line. They also have daily specials, which you can look up online. Does the cheap price compensate for the food? Maybe. However, I am not planning on returning for lunch anytime soon. I would only recommend this cafe to people who work super close by and looking for a place to eat solely based on convenience.
