While in DC and doing some advocacy work for my industry and enjoying the beautiful cherry blossoms, a group of us sat down inside the House of Representatives cafeteria for a bite to eat in between meeting with Congressmen. This café has just about anything you would want from salads to sushi to pizza to hamburgers. The pizza caught my eye and we were in a hurry so I thought I would give it a try. There were about four different types of pizza to choose from and I chose the veggie pizza maintaining my healthy eating outlook. Unfortunately, the pizza was not that good. There were plenty of vegetables, but the variety was quite limited. There were only three different types of vegetables on it, one of them being onions, which I don't like. There was a lot of cheese and the pizza was on the soggy side. The crust was average. read more

Longworth Cafeteria is an extremely busy, fast-paced area. Whether you wanted to take in a meal or grab a quick pick me up. Once inside the maze that is House, you really don't want to have to go out of the building unless you have to. They do have a lot to offer from breakfast (hot breakfast bar, hot cereal, omelet station, yogurt bar) to bakery and there are other spots to go. Deli station, salads, pizza and soup. Not to mention convenient items such as drinks and snacks. I only needed a drink whereas others in my groups wanted a little something else. I opted for the self checkout, it took a minute to figure out their system, but I was able to get it going and was paid in full. The one thing this place has, as an extension, is a Starbucks. It sits outside of the cafeteria section and you can order ahead and pick up. read more

This is clearly not the kind of place you go to if you're just randomly walking around the city. I suppose you could go down here if you're a tourist, and there is a congressional souvenir shop down here too. But pretty much anybody here is a member of Congress or works for them. Anyway, it's a cafeteria, and as far as cafeterias go, it's a pretty good one. There's a lot of selection. There's a lot of turnover because for some people, this is the only thing that they can find time to buy and eat. I worked in Longworth during the summer of 2014 and it was closed at the end due to renovations. It was always a bit pricy but the selection of food has greatly improved. I came back when visiting Congresswomen from Maryland and Delaware with other disabilty advocates two weeks ago and was impressed that they have so much variety, including kosher and halal certified options. It does get quite crowded on busy days when so many are advocating so it was very hard to find a place to sit. read more

There is a bit of a wait for the food as there always is a large crowd but I think that if you are visiting any of the house buildings for work/volunteering you should go here. Plenty of foot traffic here as mentioned before but I think that they get through the line really fast. For most of the food choices you are picking up pre-made food and you go to the line to pay. However there is a buffet where you can make your own salads and pay for that by weight. I can't recall the priceb y hand but it was not too bad. If you are in the area, I think you should try it! Good selection At the end of a representative US Capitol tour we asked our guide where was a good place to eat and learned about Longworth Cafeteria. He was heading that direction and let us join him, otherwise I don't know how accessible this place is to the general population. Longworth Cafeteria offers a large selection of reasonably priced items. As tourists we have already noticed it is expensive to eat in DC compared to home, this was a nice change. Located inside the Longworth House Office Building, it is likely primarily for workers in that building. We grabbed trays and headed out to find food. It was lunchtime, and busy. I picked up a slice of sausage pizza and a premade Reuben sandwich. There are registers between the food and the seating where you pay. Even though it was busy my wife has an uncanny ability to find a table and we were soon eating our lunch. My slice of pizza was ok, about what you should expect when you pick up a dry looking slice from under heat lamps. My Reuben, that was a fine sandwich. Very typical of a mid-sized cafeteria to be found in any large office complex. This place gets extremely busy but there are a few registers for check-out; some of which are for members and staff only. The prices are comparable to places of the The like. I paid five dollars and some change for a bottle of Coke and a small salad I made from the salad bar. The salad bar is currently forty-eight cents an ounce. This is the best cafeteria in Congress! If you know you know. They offer a wide selection of choices, including LOTS of vegan options. Their taco Tuesday is ALWAYS something to look forward to. The staff is also super friendly and I'm sure they put up with a lot from rude staff members in Congress, so props to them. I will say, that I have seen a few critters, mostly after hours though. After lobbying my Congressman for AIPAC I decided to stop off at the Longworth Cafeteria for a quick bite to eat. However, this place can get packed. People on tours, lobbyists and congressman can get this place packed. After around 30 minutes of getting through the crowd I got all of my food. I got a chicken fajita sandwich with peppers and onions on rye bread. I also got some popcorn, naked juice and a slice of vanilla and coconut cake. They have lots of other food options including a salad bar, pizza, sushi, sandwiches, delicious-looking pasta and Once you get all your food the checkout line can get long. However, the cashiers are nice and the prices are reasonable. There is a pretty large seating area, but compared to how many people are here it is hard to get a seat. I was forced to sit with two other lobbyists. The fajita was tasty, the popcorn was good and I loved the Naked juice. The vanilla cake was hard and not too soft. The coconut cake was soft and tasty. Altogether, it was above average, but nothing special. When back at Congress I may return for lunch. read more

While there is a good selection of food here, do NOT try to go here anytime around lunch time. The place is slammed, with no place to sit. If you know this building, there are no other places for a non-staffer to sit in the building and eat your lunch. The chairs and tables are all crammed in, but there is just no more space. People hover over you waiting for you to leave. At least they don't ask "are you going to eat that?" Also, if you have a late meeting with a member, this place closes at 2:30. So if you are trying to avoid the lunch rush and get a slightly late lunch, you may find yourself too late and lose out on the chance to eat food. Then you either have to eat at a vending machines or the little automated minimart (which closes at 4 PM). Maybe the bottom line is eat early. Or bring lots of snacks. read more

Longworth has more variety than the other cafeterias on campus and theres plenty of seating. Go for the Global option it changes daily but always pretty good. Stuffed cabbage had mostly rice and although had ok flavor was way too light on meat. Lemon chicken was actually quite darn good. Wife's meatball sandwich was small, pricey and bland. To my chickpea-enabled salad, I added a baked potato and a cookie and was far more satisfied here than when I ate over at the Senate building. Certainly, those with special dietary needs will appreciate the choices. Is it great? No. But it's not that expensive and it is where it is, so if you're doing something legislative, I would suggest this cafeteria as a reasonable choice if you need lunch. General Tso's chicken emerged rather uniform in shape (as if they were pulled out of a food service bag somewhere), but they were indeed crispy and nicely sauced. Affectionately known as The Trough and occupying the bulk of the basement in the Longworth House Office Building, this "best of the bad" carry-out offers the widest array of some of the worst food available in the city. As if the long hours and difficult work environment Hill staffers contend with each day weren't enough, they aren't even properly nourished. The food establishments on the House side of campus are all operated by Guest Services (GSI). At GSI, there is only one way to prepare vegetables: boil them for three hours, then put them on a steam table. Baby food isn't this soft. There are a few shining redemptions in the slop-house known as the Longworth Food Court - the two cashiers named Doris. I go there for breakfast each morning for my Daily Dose of Doris (doesn't matter which one - I love them both!). They are both beaming rays of sunshine breaking through the stormy clouds that are lost/bedazzled visitors and fiery Congresspersons. But...you gotta be a member of the club to see them at lunch. I'm very, very, very lazy so the LHOB Cafeteria gets an extra star for not requiring that I leave the building to eat lunch. Like any eatery, you just have to know what to order. The pay by weight stations look good but the food tends to be salty/mushy/bland as well as very expensive so it's best to avoid them. On the other hand, the wraps are awesome! The buffalo chicken wrap is my go-to lunch and it's only $7 with chips and a drink. The burgers are decent... I spiffy them up a little by adding greens and tomatoes from the salad bar. And I thought that I was being clever writing a review for the Cafeteria located underneath one of the Congressional Offices. The Longworth Cafeteria is a large cafeteria with a lot of options. There are even special lines of Members of Congress and staff. They food is rather typical and often dry from sitting underneath a heat lamp. Prices aren't terribly expensive but it's certainly not as cheap as most corporate cafeterias. A fruit parfait is still $3.75. There's very little reason to come to Longworth Cafeteria if you're not a Hill Staffer but it's still fun just to say you've been there. What has happened to my once-beloved Longworth? Don't get me wrong, I am still absolutely convinced that Longworth is the best of the cafeterias on the House side (I can't speak for the Senate as I've never been). But... man. When the Longworth caf was first re-vamped and greenified, it was absolutely amazing. Despite the fact that the food was put out on a steam table, it all looked amazing, and delicious. I always seemed to have to choose between options that all sounded and looked delicious - just like when I went to an amazing restaurant. Times, they are a-changing. Now, I walk into Longworth and more often than not I am stuck with my absolute baseline backup: a chicken sandwich from the 'grill' station. The 'main course' often looks inedible (though the sides have managed to remain acceptable at least), and more and more often the international looks less than savory as well. When the 'greening' first came through, I was ecstatic to see that the mantra seemed to be 'take amazing produce & meat, cook it simply, and serve'. Roast salmon with a simple sauce (to keep things from drying out) could be found at least once every week or so. Now... it's gone. There was a recent price raise. If the quality of the food now was as it had been, I'd have happily paid the increase. But with the quality as it is now, I'm not nearly so willing to fork over my cash for the slim and sad pickings... HOWEVER. The staff is amazing. Friendly, smiling, and they know their regulars. That is something that hasn't changed. read more

Longworth is definitely the best cafeteria experience I've had on the Hill. They renovated the whole place in the last few months, making way for a fresher looking set-up, and as Victoria T. mentioned, all the products (cups, silverware, straws, etc.) are totally biodegradable and made from corn starch! I dig on the salad bar - always a wonderful selection of fresh greens, veggies, and specialty side salads. They have an "international" bar, which rotates different cuisines. The Thai bar was incredible - however the Russian and Spanish bars looked far from appealing. Not as great of a selection as running over to Union Station, but a pleasant experience on the whole, along with random sightings of representatives and general people-watching. read more

On my most recent visit, I was devastated to learn that they no longer make/serve the buffalo chicken wrap - it was, hands down, the gem of the eatery. And it was hugely popular, dare I say it even had a cult following, so I don't get why they would discontinue it. The place also gets crazy crowded at mealtimes, so much so that it's often a challenge to find a seat. Will I come back? Yes, as it's more or less a monopoly on the House side. Really a 2.5 in context (drab basement office cafeteria), not in the grand scheme of things. One day yelp will give indecisive people like me the .5, and I will quietly rejoice. Back when I worked on the Hill, I consumed maybe a couple thousand meals from here. It has always been mediocre to varying degrees. Before it changed vendors, they used to have killer buffalo chicken wraps, turkey day wednesdays, and though the food wasn't spectacular, at least it was cheap. The House switched vendors in '07, wraps now pretty terrible, turkey wednesday still around, but not quite the same and everything is pricey, especially for that side of town. They treat it like it's a Smithsonian food court or something, and though there are quite a few tourists that eat there, there are a ton of poor Hill staff that are forced to pick up potentially crappy food there and pay through the nose for it. The layout and traffic flow is piss poor, tourists never know where the hell to go b/c there are different lanes for staff or people that have quickpay cards. All that said, for a food court/cafeteria setting, it's not horrific food if you know the right thing to order (BBQ, turkey, pizza, taco salad). Avoid the 'region of the day' international bar at all costs. As Joye mentioned, Doris is awesome, I would wait in a longer line just to say hey to her. This place is busy as hell and getting a seat during lunch hour is like trying to find parking at Tysons during the week before Christmas. You have to be draconian. Why? Because the cafeteria serves food for Congressmen, staffers, tourists, lobbyists, and everyone else. Plenty of options to eat from - I recommend the beef brisket and jalapeno cornbread at the barbecue station. Otherwise, if you have time to go somewhere else, I would recommend eating out of the Capitol since this place is just a steady churn of folks that reminds me of a hospital cafeteria. read more

Wow, for being a cafeteria, I was super impressed. Came to the Capitol for a legislative conference and we were escorted by our congressperson's scheduler to this place. Upsides - Things are CHEAP (I'm from NYC so I'm used to horribly priced food) and affordable. I purchased a ceasar salad with some extra toppings (onion, corn, avocado) with a drink and it was... 8 bucks? Dang! I wish I could eat here all the time. They have a PLETHORA of choices. From my salad (made by a worker) to make-your-own salad bar, Southern fried cooking, noodles from a variety of Asian cuisines, Mediterranean, mac and cheese, sandwiches, to desserts, this place had everything. It was so hard to decide! Interesting things to see - whether you see people from various organizations coming to talk to their congresspeople, interns, schedulers, or even some business negotiations go down, there's plenty of people-watching to be had here Downsides - Seating during lunch is REALLY hard to come by. Just be that creep that lurks around until someone gets up, but don't push them out of the way, that's just rude! read more

Vegetarians: head for the wrap station. For $5.50 you can get a massive, filling, and pretty tasty falafel wrap. It's no Amsterdam Falafelshop; it has more salad greens than it does falafel; and these are tortilla wraps, not pita bread. But it's still very good, with crispy and well-seasoned falafel strips and a fine balsamic dressing (which you can substitute with tzatziki yogurt sauce). Ask them to add hot sauce for a kick. And/or ask them to hold the feta to make it vegan. On the down side, the bottled iced teas are often not cold at all. It's as if they got put in the fridge 5 minutes ago. Tourists, congressmen, staffers, interns... they're all here, and all digging in. If you've never been to the Hill before, you should definitely stop by and check out the atmosphere. As a former Hilltern, this was the only place I could grab lunch in the 30 minute block I was allowed. No worries though, selection is always good, but things are a little on the pricey side. They really need to stop charging salads by weight as well, you'd be shocked how high the prices can go if you're not careful. Then again, it definitely teaches you portion control. Also, the BBQ station will definitely help you pack on the pounds. Especially the baked mac n' cheese... In the end, the rating for Longworth depends on whether you're a staffer/hilltern/DC local/etc, or a tourist. For locals, 3.0 out of 5.0 stars: the place is a bit pricey, even by DC standards. For tourists, 4.0 out of 5.0 stars: it beats the CVC in both price and selection, and it's a fairly unique experience. Final rating: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Ok, so it's a basic cafeteria not much different than a local hospital with the different food bars you can select from but you get to see what truly goes on in our nation's capitol because everyone knows it's the staffers who do all the work! Had lunch here while lobbying to our congress people and got to meet some really cool staffers as well as other lobbyists. Fun people and great atmosphere. The place gets packed at lunchtime and isn't necessarily the cheapest option on the Hill, but the location is tough to beat and the true feeling of being on the Hill is beyond compare. read more

I stopped by Longworth Cafeteria around a little before noon while visiting the Hill for a lobbying day. We found a table pretty easy for our group of five, although the fit between our table and the next was a bit tight. There are many options for a variety of tastes. I grabbed a chicken caesar on ciabatta. It was pretty good for cafeteria food, but certainly nothing to write home about. It's also fairly cheap, at least it is when compared to other prices in D.C. As an added bonus, you don't have to leave the building for food and deal with security. I've taken groups there a couple times, and had pretty consistent experiences. I'll probably keep go there again the next time I do another visit day on the Hill. It's a cool spot for people visiting the Hill for as tourists or lobbyists, or people who actually work there (I guess). read more

Thinking back to my grade school days days, I cannot imagine a cafeteria that has been a bigger disappointment. The concept of eating in the congress may appeal to first timers, but the honeymoon is quickly over leaving you with the messy divorce of nauseating, unhealthy food. It's hilarious to me that the Longworth Cafeteria is somehow even on Yelp! If you have worked on the Hill you would know that this place is to be avoided. You may get some food that tastes just fine, but beware of the things you don't see. Mice are commonly spotted scurrying across the floors, fingernails and other foreign objects found in food, mold found inside potatoes (saw them have to get rid of all of their sweet potatoes one time after a co-worker had this problem), and staff that don't care about anything. Any tourist considering eating there is better served just waiting until you can eat somewhere outside of the House complex. read more
