Hey yall, For…read moreTRAVELING PPL: I just paid $215 for 4 nights here Wednesday-Sunday to be cheap and taste the DC city life next to the White House for a second before I go back to Baltimore for work. That's about $59 a night. I mean, it's chill, it's clean for the most part. The lil less quality stuff that needs to be fixed I'll suggest tomorrow to the team working here which the staff are nice. I got a chance to chill on the rooftop in the hamic, how nice. Love the lights. Everyone's nice, lots of GUYS!!! Way more guys than gals. I've only seen about 2-3 women here. I've seen like 15 guys. My bedroom has all guys btw! Had to ask for a bottom bunk b/c the put me up top. My bed is broken too... like half my mattress is sunken in and the other half is normal. I'll tell them tomorrow! The showers for females are clean but the nosel to turn the water temp was broken however I still took a hot shower and they need to fix that but otherwise there's 3 other showers with low pressure for water I think... I'll see tomorrow Otherwise, the fridge is cool, kitchen smells like food but nothing bad, I mean, otherwise clean sheets and blankets, a pillow and you can go and come as you please! Central to everything, I walked to Whole Foods and walked to the White House already and been walking around since 5pm-9pm... lots of people walk outside! Nice lil market next door and a restaurant downstairs.... Would I stay at another hostel ever again? If I wanted to save my money and be cheap yessss... If I wanted to ball out and get a hotel I would or a Airbnb which I'm still considering doing for my other 5 nights I have to figure out from Sunday-Friday... after I check out here.. which I will be checking out... Don't think I can stay for longer than 4 nights lol this is my first time at a hostel and I just wanted to test it... I at the least want my own bed and bedroom somewhere... don't mind paying and I may travel to another city... Anyways! Enjoy and make sure to ask the staff for help if needed! This was my first US hostel…read moreexperience (and my first hostel period in 20 years), so I was bracing myself for noisy young backpackers, work, not super hygienic facilities, and I was a bit nervous about safety. Not at all what I found at Duo - the staff were courteous and very helpful, the very nice bathroom and kitchen facilities were clean and well-supplied, and the beds, while no frills, were comfortable, warm and clean. There was a mix of residents, in terms of age (at 40 I was not even the oldest one there!) some were international travelers, others were US visitors to DC, I didn't actually meet or talk to any students. I was only able to stay one night because my driver's license still has my DC address, and they don't allow DMV residents to stay for more than a night at a time (I moved less than a month ago). For the price, this is a great find and will definitely be on my list of places to stay when I have to be in DC for work On my first night checking in, there was an older gentleman on the stoop outside telling everyone trying to get in that this was the worst hostel experience he'd ever had, and I wondered what I was getting myself into. Turns out that guy was the equivalent of a live 1-star Yelp review that Yelp would put in the "not recommended" bin.

This one had good reviews on hostel sites so we decided we'd stay here for 2 days. I'm a clean freak and if you are too please don't stay here. Every time I went to the bathroom I questioned everything because it looked disgusting and in need of a lot of repairs. The beds are worn down and not comfy. I stayed in a 2 bedroom so we had privacy and weren't stuck with sharing a space. They have a no shoes policy and I didn't feel comfortable with that cause it just looked dirty. I wouldn't stay here again. The one staff member we dealt with wasn't all that nice so that def didn't help.

I told them the air was broken in my pod and they told me I could move the next morning. When I went down, they said they were full and couldn't move me. I couldn't stay in a hotbox again so I stayed somewhere else. They offered me a free coffee as compensation. the prime location is the only reason I'm not giving zero stars. It's close to the nightlife, food spots and metro. I would avoid if you can afford to.

I can ONLY imagine what an actual border must navigate if they have a problem. Stay away from this place... unless you like to be ignored, weary or worthless.

Apparently, someone from the staff made a mistake while extending my stay. I followed the instructions given to me by this person and on the second day when I was ready to move to the room assigned told by the latter, I calmly approached the manager to confirm. Manager became unnecessarily defensive insisting that I had only paid for a cheaper room even though I had the receipt and the person who originally made the extension confirmed that my reservation was exactly as I described. Instead of apologizing, management reacted with hostility, cancelled my reservation without an explanation, and demanded that I leave the building immediately. This person even became more aggressive, rushing me out giving me little time to properly pack my belongings with dignity, humiliating me in front of other guests, and taking my things nearly outside without my permission even though I never resisted leaving. At one point he told me, "You will see today," while trying to provoke me into re-entering the building likely to escalate the situation even further. I chose to walk away because his behavior appeared completely out of control. If you value professionalism, respect, and personal safety, I strongly recommend avoiding this hostel. I would not recommend this place. UPDATE: Now I see the property responded to my review with false claims, including accusing me of "taking a leak" in the room and underestimating their hostile behavior, in what seems like a desperate attempt to distract readers from the serious and unacceptable incident I experienced there. This person seem to forget that the police were called for a reason. Nothing justified such behavior. Dear readers, this is how low and sketchy this place is. Instead of addressing the lack of professionalism, the owner chooses to attack my character publicly fabricating arguments. I dare this property to prove their claim. Again, I was NEVER given an explanation as to why my extension was suddenly revoked. It is clear the manager just appeared frustrated and angry after his misconduct and decided to retaliate by forcing me out in an intimidating and hostile manner likely to try to humiliate me. That said, I would have been just slightly less appalled if it was 20 years ago and I had this experience. The staff person was polite, but not particularly helpful. I told him I would be checking out before 6am, and so he wouldn't give me a key to my room because he said no one would be on duty that early to take the key back when I checked out. Not great for my roommates, I had to leave the door unlocked while they slept when I snuck out a little after 5:30am. The facilities were so filthy that I didn't even feel comfortable taking a shower there, or using the bathroom much at all. I wasn't given a towel, so showering would have been awkward anyway. More on the lack of hygiene was demonstrated by the presence of all the mice; not fun seeing a dying baby mouse stagger from the kitchen to the bathroom, or hearing about mice running around in the dorm I was assigned to from my roommates. The best things I can say for this hostel is that it's in a popular location, the bedsheets were clean, and the other guests were nice and polite without being overly friendly. This was a last resort because reservations at other places fell through, but I definitely wouldn't return here for anything, and no matter how minimal your needs or budget, I'd advise avoiding this place.

The hotel is in a great area that's close to different eating places and some stores (CVS, Trader Joe's). The room I had faced the street and I had no issues with it. It was clean, big, came with a mini fridge and a tiny bar area. I wouldn't recommend renting a car since there isn't a parking lot. I'm not too sure what the parking situation is like. There was a water faucet to refill your water bottle in the hallway..it may be me but I couldn't figure out how to turn it off LOL! I almost forgot to mention that there's a mini gym too. The next time I visit DC, I'd likely stay at the Hotel Madera again.

The decor of the cafe and bar was very cute but the rooms were very simple. The best part was the view. This place has it all, a rooftop bar, with an amazing view of the Capitol building and semi view of the Washington monument; a bar open till 2am, meeting rooms, and areas where you can just hang out and watch a game or a movie. It can take a while to get used to it because it can get a little confusing. But once you figure it out, it only gets easier from there. If you don't want to use the iPad, they have switches on the wall to control the shades, lights, and a separate TV remote. The shower pressure, and the king sized bed with fluffy pillows were so comfortable. We stayed for 2 nights. The rooms were very clean, although a bit small and cramped. They cap the rooms at 2 adults & a small kid. I think these rooms are decent for solo travel. The location is very close to the museums, just a short walk away ~10 minutes to Air and Space Museum. The Great American State Fair was also taking place during this time, and we spent some time there as well since it was a short walk over.

Four days after I returned, I realized that I had left an item in the room. I reached out to see if they could locate it, and Matthew immediately got back to me. He found the item, helped confirm that it was indeed the item I left, and immediately put in motion a process that will allow me to get it delivered back home to me quickly. Plus, he was so polite and professional throughout. I'm so thankful and I am delighted that I'll be reunited with my item. They had 2 fortune cookies on our bed as a welcome gift and slides if you need them but they are $14.00 in the beautiful cabinet closet and I had to have them, wearing them are like walking on air and well worth $14.00. This was the best stay ever, so if you are in Washington DC book this place.

Not so: I have stayed here a total of 8 days over several occasions and each time I find it frustrating to be given really terrible rooms upon check-in that I need to ask to be moved. They have some really old half rooms and some badly choppy setu-ups that I think they pass off to a mid-age solo traveler. Not cool! The hotel has a restaurant, but no signage to let anyone know where it is. This is important because the bar/restaurant is closed until later in the day and after 7 nights staying here I found out they had a restaurant on my last day of the last trip! And one last complaint, leaving I give front desk gal keys to check out, she hands 'em back so I can get car out of the garage. Well I get locked in garage cause key isn't working. Maddening locked in with lines of cars behind me. Finally a bell guy called the front desk to clear that I can leave!
