I had a wonderful stay! The staff was my favorite part of my stay. From the front desk, the sushi place, the downstairs bartender, to the security guard... they were all amazing and super friendly & personable. They treated me like I've know them forever! And the patrons alike felt the same way. The room, although smaller than most places I've stayed at, was perfect for my one-night stay. It had all the amenities I needed, and was quite cozy. This place has it all, a rooftop bar, with an amazing view of the Capitol building and semi view of the Washington monument; a bar open till 2am, meeting rooms, and areas where you can just hang out and watch a game or a movie. Another big plus is the decor! All in all, if I'm ever back in DC, I'd stay here for sure! read more

The iPad is like motherboard of the hotel room, you can use it to request cleaning, control the shades, use it as a TV remote, adjust the temperature, change the ambiance, turn off the lights. It can take a while to get used to it because it can get a little confusing. But once you figure it out, it only gets easier from there. If you don't want to use the iPad, they have switches on the wall to control the shades, lights, and a separate TV remote. The shower pressure, and the king sized bed with fluffy pillows were so comfortable. We stayed for 2 nights. The rooms were very clean, although a bit small and cramped. They cap the rooms at 2 adults & a small kid. I think these rooms are decent for solo travel. The location is very close to the museums, just a short walk away ~10 minutes to Air and Space Museum. The Great American State Fair was also taking place during this time, and we spent some time there as well since it was a short walk over. read more

This hotel should come with a warning! The rooms are small AF and layed out poorly. The sink is in the entry way, the shower is tiny, the toilet is terrible with almost no water in it, and the bed has one side on which to enter. And if you're planning on working, good luck with the tiny "desk". Everything electronic is controlled with an iPad which seems like a cool modern thing, but in practice, it sucks. There are a few switches around but I found hitting one light switch shut off everything. And when I got out of bed, the TV shut off... so if you're watching something, it took like 2 minutes to get back to where you were on the TV. Yeah, you change channels on the iPad too. What a terrible implementation of some wanna-be modernist's hair-brained idea. I was here for a weekend in between 2 work trips and had a big suitcase as it was 11 total days... and there was absolutely nowhere but the floor to put the suitcase. This hotel was impossible to settle into. I can imagine one night being find, but I was here for 3 nights and hated being in the room. Also, self check in and self check out and no printed receipt option, so you gotta hope they email the receipt (they did, but not immediately). The staff just kinda tells you what to do instead of actually helping you check in. Why even be there? The only reason it's 2 stars instead of 1 was its proximity to some of the museums at the mall and the Wharf for some decent dining options. But I don't plan on using this brand again. read more

I stayed at the Citizen M while in DC for a quick work trip. I had been wanting to stay at one for a while and this just worked out. I had read reviews and lots of info about the hotel so I knew what I was getting into. The room, which is definitely small (as expected), was perfect! The size/layout of the room reminded me of some of the international hotels that have micro rooms available for rent when you have a long layover. I loved everything about the rom. The bed was super comfortable. I loved the electric black out shade. I loved the iPad that controls the lights, A/C, blinds, etc. I loved the mood settings for the room...very cool. I loved the reusable shampoo, conditioner, soap and lotion. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The lobby area is very comfortable and a great place to hang out. The only real issue I had (which is why I have it 4 stars instead of 5) is the temperature of the shower water. It verged on cold. It was a littler warmer when using the hand wand in the shower but it was too cold for me and it just wouldn't heat up to an acceptable hot temperature. I spoke with several other guests who said the same thing and had the same complaint. Other than that, my stay was perfect! I loved the location of this particular hotel - easy access to the wharf and all the shops/restaurants there and also pretty easy access to museum row. It was also in very close proximity to a train stop (I didn't need to catch the train but it would have been super convenient had I needed to do so). Lastly, the price was right! It was less than half some of the other hotels in that immediate area. I spent a few hours a night in the hotel sleeping...why spend double on bigger and supposedly better room? Second time staying at a CitizenM hotel, my first was CitizenM NOMA, and I like this location better. It's a bit more spacious to me and the interior layout and location is better. They are both a very short walk from the subway and walkable, it was a breeze walking to the wharf from here. I love these hotels, I'm very tech savvy, a minimalist, and love unique artsy places, so if you fall into that category you'll enjoy this hotel. There are many great places in the hotel to work and connect with friends, a nice bar on the lower level and rooftop restaurant/bar. For the size you get everything, a View, fridge, safe, mood lighting. Some "nicer" hotels don't even provide a fridge js. The other feature I really love, is the GYM!! They have a great gym it's bigger than you think, free weight and cardio machines, the good ones! And now I get Bonvoy points for my stay, yep I'll keep coming back. read more

As much as I wanted to love this hotel, the AC not working in the rooms ruined it for me. I had to move rooms (new room still didn't have ac) and when I went to the front desk to complain, 2 different people approached me saying they over heard me complain about ac & said that theirs also wasn't working. They sent maintenance up twice to "fix" it but it never got fixed. They then refused to refund me any more than 1 night after failing to fix the issue. That's at least 4 rooms with no ac. 99.9% of the staff is amazing. Completely amazing !! Going the extra mile and friendly and kind. They have a beautiful camaraderie with each other. So fun to interact with them! The gal who does the lunch time bar keeping keeps her nose in the air and is clearly more important than anyone else on the planet. And it's important that everyone else knows they are beneath her. She will tidy the bar and straighten all the bottles and then go check the cabinets and be silent or snippy when a customer deigns ask for something. She brings the whole place down. She is the weakest link and I hope she either gets an attitude adjustment that sticks or she gets told to get a different job somewhere else where she doesn't interact with the public. The room is clean and comfy. The bed is comfy. The pillows are great. The color lights in the shower are fun. There is no hot water at the sink, but ample hot water in the shower. There is a lot of fun all over inside this hotel. I love the carpet map of DC outside the elevators too. :) And the fun dance videos in the elevator. That's fun too! We have enjoyed the foods we have gotten from the menu in the main level restaurant, I love the water dispenser for refilling our bottles. And the sushi is so good too! We are having a good trip here and look forward to future trips too! read more

CitizenM hotels are more or less all a copy/paste of one another. I stayed at the Boston North Station hotel a few years back and the room was almost exactly the same. Not bad, but not unique from eachother. The benefit of the hotels being the same is that everything is pretty easy to navigate. Check-In/Out is done on a kiosk and everything in the room can be controlled via iPad. The overall layout of the room is maximized to efficiently fit everything in as small of a footprint as possible - bed with storage and safe underneath, desk & chair, extra bench for seating, toilet & shower, sink & mirror, cooling drawer for beverages, and a closet area to hang clothing. As a solo traveler staying for a short trip, I don't mind the set up, there is the perfect amount of space to spread out for just one, but I have reservations about accommodating a couple because someone would have to crawl across the other to get out of bed in the morning and I'm sure you can hear all bathroom noises through the glass partition. Things I particularly like about the room are probably the more "gimmicky" stuff like the cute plush in the room, TV personalized with your name on the home screen, and being able to adjust the colored lighting. The bed also feels huge and the blackout curtains are everything! Overall my stay went smoothly and I particularly appreciated the presence of security in the late evenings. I'll definitely consider a CitizenM hotel again for more short trips. read more

To Whom It May Concern: I checked into the CitizenM Washington DC Capitol on Thursday, October 16th at 10am. The hotel stated a room was available and they allowed us to check in early. Once in the room we immediately recognized how cold the room was. When we checked the temperature it was set to 69 degrees. I then used the iPad and tried to turn the temperature up to the highest temperature of 78 big the iPad went back down to 75. I continued to work and realized the temperature still was not changing. I called downstairs and they stated they would reset the temperature and to see if anything changed in 20 mins. I called back and informed them the temperature did not change. The front desk stated that maintenance was not available and was in a meeting and they would reach out once they were available. More time went by and I called again and I ASKED if maybe there wasn't other room available. The woman stated we could try that but all the rooms are set at 69 and would take time to heat up. I then waited until they came up to show 2 other rooms. However, one room seemed warmer because it was facing the sun and I told her I would need to think about it since it could only be warmer due to the sun. I called back to review the second room again but decided if the room isn't going to get warmer then it would be best for us to leave so we are comfortable. The front desk asked if we could be out in an hour and we came down in 30 mins at 5:30p. The front desk stated I would be refunded for 2 nights and I stated that would not work since I didn't stay here. She said she would bring over the manager. The manager Zulifya Yakshimbetova stated she would not refund me for the entire stay since we checked in at 10am. That is completely absurd! We stayed in good faith that the hotels heat would work and that maintenance would come and fix it. By the way maintenance never came and wasn't offered to come again till about 4:30 when another front desk staff came up and also concluded that it was cold on the entire floor. How is it that multiple staff members can agree it's cold but the manager still not grant a refund? My first time ever staying at a CitizenM, and it was both interesting and eye-opening. Think of a CitizenM hotel like a cruise ship. The priority are the destinations, but the ship offers nice amenities as well. The rooms are small and narrow, much like on a ship. An iPad controls everything from the AC to the ambiance and TV. The shower has frosted glass. The window is HUGE. The bed is even bigger. The location is very close to "The Mall" area of Washington DC. The staff (ambassadors) were so kind and helpful. And our room was totally clean. The only negative I had with the room is that it was set to 64 and felt closer to 75. It did get cold at night, but in the middle of the day it struggled to cool down. My stay here during renovation was great. It was a different experience for me everything is operated by an iPad in the rooms from the blinds to lighting to TV choices. The prices is right. The breakfast is great even expresso. They have a bar and awesome dumplings. The seating inside the hotel offers booths chairs of all types charging stations TV sections pillows WOW you just have to experience it and have a little computer skill for the room. When I arrived on Sunday at 9:30p.m. the Sushi restaurant was closed and the bar was closed due to construction. Went into my room and discovered no heat, when I called the front desk the agent informed me that the heat takes an hour to come on. I called back after an hour to let the agent know that there still wasn't any heat, the agent brought me a space heater. When I went to take a shower the water was not hot. I have never had this experience before, and I did read the reviews before booking the room, I was very disappointed! read more

CitizenM was a very hip hotel that we stayed for a few days in Washington D.C. It was ideally located where you could walk to the nearby Metro station around the block and about a 15-minute walk to the Wharf. The interior design of the hotel was very hip with a Gotham feel straight out of the Dark Knight comics almost from the 1980s. From the rooftop cocktail bar with gorgeous views of the U.S. Capitol to the lobby bar and library, the hotel is a good place to start your day, have an evening drink, or a nightcap. Our room was compact but had a lot of amenities that I enjoyed immensely from their infotainment tablet that allowed you to change the color of the lights based on the mood settings and set up different music for if you're settling down to go to sleep or waking up. The tablet operates everything in the room. I enjoyed strategically opening up the privacy and blackout blinds in the morning and then closing in the evening. I really liked the shape and design of the standing shower and toilet. It was glass-walled and there was a curtain partition should you want privacy. To access the shower, you first opened the glass door that led to where the toilet was located before opening another glass door that led you into the shower. The water pressure was great. The only two complaints I have come from trying to operate the elevator with the room key card and how the bed was positioned in our room. It took me until the third day I was staying at the hotel to figure out where to position the key card over the scanner in the elevator so I could select the floor we wanted to go up without being stalled on the lobby. Apparently, we were just some of the guests who had difficulties using their key cards for the elevator. The hotel should provide visual instructions on where to position the card and how long before pushing the appropriate floor button, as that may help. Granted you may still have people who can't do it, but every little helps. While the bed was comfortable, because it was positioned wall to wall in the room next to the window, depending on who was closest to the window would need to crawl practically on top of the other person if they needed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Don't get me wrong, the hotel did a great job utilizing the space within our hotel room but that is one challenge I didn't anticipate when we did stay there. But overall, the hotel stay was solid, and would stay there again the next time we are in D.C., especially, if we see more shows at the Anthem in the Wharf. read more

The front desk staff either needs to be trained or fired. The afternoon and evening crew spend more time hiding out on the sofas in the side room while playing on their phones than they do paying attention to and interacting with their customers. When you do get their attention, they continue to be lazy, rude, uninterested in customer service and demonstrate zero recognition of the value of their customers, nor do they seem to understand that the customers are the purpose of their jobs. This place is definitely not for the claustrophobic. The rooms are uncomfortably tiny. Every move you make requires strategy, so you don't bang into the walls, fixtures and windows. The bathroom is like using a toilet and showering in the same closet. We picked this place based on price, but we'll choose a real hotel for adults in the future, not a painfully cheeky, wanna be hipster, glorified dorm room. The only reason I didn't give this hotel one star is that the team managing the meeting spaces, while not what I'd call friendly, were at least efficient and moderately generous. Yes, it is a pretty space, conveniently located. But a positive hotel experience is more than decor and attitude. read more

For our seven night stay in DC, we chose Citizen M as the price was on the lower end (these days, under $200 a night is "cheap"), and it was in an excellent location -- close to everything, but not in the middle of all the hubbub (although there really isn't any hubbub in DC). The downside, however, was that it was one of those "micro" rooms, but if you want a somewhat affordable price, you have to sacrifice size. (To maximize the small space, the "bathroom" was one of those shower stall/toilet combos, although there was at least a division between the toilet and shower, which is not always the case.) Citizen M is trying to cater to younger people, as is evident from the decor and iPad-controlled lights/window blinds/TV/air conditioner in the room. While the decor was funky and the lighting was pretty cool (using the iPad, you could change the color of the lighting in the "bathroom"), as someone over the age of 40, I value cleanliness and peace and quiet over cool lights and technology. At first Citizen M seemed to pass the noise test (excluding the bells from the nearby church waking us up every morning at 7am), but on the penultimate night, there was a so much noise which didn't stop until about 2am. All evening long, we could hear a constant rumble of talking and music, punctuated with what sounded like explosions from an action movie, making it difficult to fall asleep. The noise became even louder around 12:30am, and we went to investigate where it could have been coming from, even going outside to try and determine the source. However, we could not figure out where the noise was coming from -- it did not appear to be coming from another room or from a nearby building. We complained, and an employee walked around the hotel and checked other floors for the source of the noise, but she couldn't figure it out either. It was a complete mystery, and we wondered if it were coming from a completely different part of the hotel and due to the way the vents were designed, we had the unfortunate luck of having all the noise funnelled directly into OUR room. The noise finally stopped around 2am. Another issue we had was the lack of air conditioning. Either the AC in the hotel sucked or the AC was malfunctioning in our room, because it was sweltering and I was drenched in sweat every night. However, the staff claimed the AC was working. Between the heat and the noise, I did not have once restful night. I was going to give Citizen M four stars, and even though they deserve two stars due to the noise and lack of air conditioning, I'll give it three stars, as aside from the heat and noise, it was a pretty decent hotel. In addition to the excellent location, they had a nice rooftop bar; they offered a decent breakfast buffet (although at $20, it was expensive); they had a comfortable lounge and plenty of seating if you wanted to relax; and the staff was excellent. It's a shame that the AC wasn't working and the noise that one night was absolutely unbearable. A decent hotel, but with some major flaws. (Also, the shower leaked a bit into our room.) On a recent trip to DC, we stayed at the citizenM for 4 nights. I really dug into the decor and vibe of the hotel. Our room was clean and very tech-savvy. You can control the temp lighting music in the room with an iPad or app on your phone. The staff was helpful and friendly. The location was perfect only a couple blocks away from the metro. Walking/short Uber to the wharf. My only complaint is the bed was up against the wall so in the middle of the night I had to climb over my husband to go to the bathroom. I don't seem to have good luck with CitizenM. In LA, the heater was broken and they could not fix it. Here, the heater was again broken. It says it gradually takes effect but after 90 min, nothing, called down and later that day it was working. Turned it off which was probably a mistake because at night turned it back on and it barely worked. I had it to set it to the highest setting 79 just to get it to around 73 and what makes it worse is that the vent is up by the ceiling so all the heat is way up there and useless. Most of the staff was nice but a couple were not. When I bought a bottle of water, can of sparkling water and a banana from their canteen, the guy asked if I need a receipt and I said "no, that's OK" he just walked away. I wasn't sure if he went to get me a bag or what, but no, he was just done with the transaction. No thank you, response or acknowledgement at all. Weird. Some of the other staff were very nice though. Breakfast OK but the eggs were far too salty too eat. Room is small but good for the price but the iPad control is so clumsy. You have to tap it to wake it up, then it takes several seconds to initialize before it's ready for input so it's so slow to use. You have to do this just to look at the time even. TV is bolted firmly to the wall making it impossible to access the HDMI inputs. Location is good being near a metro station, but not much to eat in the immediate area. Overall: Cool new hotel, low cost, decent location, tiny room, rooftop bar. Not sure if it's 100% family friendly. Perfect for an individual traveler or couple. Would stay again. Location: Main reason I chose this hotel was its location and low cost. If you are fit and not afraid of walking, it's close to the Washington Monument (1.2 miles) and a place called the Wharf (.5 miles). The city also has electric scooters and bikes for rent located in front of the hotel entrance. Checking in: Awesome process! You go to a kiosk and lookup your reservation. One of the coolest parts about the check in is that you get to pick where your room is. You choose from lower or upper floor. Then choose which side: looking at courtyard or looking at School street. If you want a view of the Capitol from your room, choose Upper floor School St view. The ability to choose the location of your room is very cool, I've never seen it done before. Cleanliness: Very clean hotel. Must be newly renovated. Everything was new and hip. No bad smells. No weird stains. Staff: Very nice staff. The hotel calls them "ambassadors". Always greeted me on the way into the lobby. Bartenders at the 2 bars were super friendly. The people working here might be the best I've dealt with. Room: This is where people will likely complain. The room was the smallest room I've ever stayed in. Narrow entry. Bathroom door, when open, blocks path to entry door. Head and foot of bed are right against the wall, so the person sleeping near the window has no electric outlet and must climb over the other person to get in/out. I was alone, so this was not a big deal to me. I can see how this could be an issue when you have a larger crew or family. The other thing to mention is that it's a little scary to lay in bed because the bed is right up against the window, and the window is so large and low so it felt like I was laying on the edge of the building looking down 10 floors. Could be an issue if you're scared of heights, get a lower floor if you are. Bathroom: The shower setup, although nice and new, was kind of annoying to turn on. The position of the on/off switch is in the back and you have to reach all the way in to turn the shower on, resulting in an inevitable blast of cold water on your arm. So annoying. The toilet is fine, but I'm not sure it flushes 100%. There's 2 types of flushes. Full for #2 or light for #1. There was always a smell coming from the toilet and leftover pee in it even after flushing. Odd. Decor: While it is "hip" and "modern", the decor can be a bit much for some folks. Far left liberal vibes. Especially the elevator videos that play. One of the videos is of a young guy wearing underwear and red high heels dancing elaborately. It's just kind of awkward when you're locked in the elevator forced to stare at it. The lobby has a figurine of dogs humping. There's a book in the food area called "Sendnudes" with erotic photos. Probably not great for family with kids. Fine for me as an adult single traveler. It's just worth noting here for others. Food/Bar: I didn't see many options for food. 2 bar/lounge areas on the floor and on the roof. The roof bar is where it's at. Opens after 4pm. I found it to be too busy around 5pm when the after work crowd got out. Or maybe it was a formal event, everyone was wearing business attire. On my first night I took a peek but didn't stay since I was alone and it felt kind of awkward. On my second night, I went up a little later, after 7pm. It was a very light crowd at 7pm on a Friday. There are so many spectacular things I can say about this hotel. I stayed here on a four-night solo vacation and enjoyed myself tremendously! The employees here are attentive, professional, and seem to do it all! They have a great group at this establishment. citizenM's art and decor around the entire building are extremely cool! Barack Obama with locs and Martin Luther King Jr. with a fitted hat on. That's just a crumb of the fascinating art I saw. The hotel is very innovative! You check-in and out on your own (of course, there's the crew that will help). Love the tablet that's in the room that controls: all of the several lights in the room, the mood light that changes to many different colors of your choice, the TV, blinds, has info about the hotel that is useful during your stay, temperature, etc. Also, all that I mentioned can be controlled on your cellphone too through their app, including casting streaming networks to the TV like Netflix. It's fantastic! During check-in, you can choose how high or low you want to stay in the building, along with which side of the building you want to see out of your room's window. I was able to see the US Capitol building out of my window. The room isn't that big, but it works and the bed is comfortable! The shower is where you can also experience the mood light (I mostly kept it on pink, which is my favorite color :) )and the nice big shower head felt good. The employees made great drinks (pricey but on point). The breakfast buffet (that's an additional cost; I opted to pay the days I ate breakfast), which was pretty good. They also have a fancy coffee machine, and I ordered delicious cappuccinos. I tried their pasta and hummus with pita chips, and it was decent. There are plenty of places around the hotel to just chill and vibe, including the lovely rooftop, which is both indoor and outdoor. There's also a bar on the rooftop (but during the time I went, it was closed). The citizenM hotel is one of my favorites! I loved it here! read more

This hotel employs thieves. My friend stayed in the hotel for one night last week. He used his bank card to check in, and at the bar. The next morning he woke up to urgent calls from his bank saying that his card was compromised by three unauthorized purchases attempted on his card. It could ONLY have been the front desk staff or the bar staff. He tried to complain to the young woman at the front desk while checking out, and she couldn't care less. Don't go there. read more

Not a fan of this style hotel! The bed was large and comfortable but the room was much smaller than anticipated! I saw the reviews and knew it would be but not like this. When I first got there, the check-in staff was arguing with another man after they gave his room away because he was late due to flight delays and they still charged him. That was extremely weird. He couldn't help that all flights that they were late. Next the woman checking me in was extremely rude. I don't know if she was upset because I didn't understand how to check in properly or what I tried the mobile checking in and it did not work for me. I consider myself very tech savvy, but this just wasn't it. The room was beautiful. I'm not gonna lie and I love the decor all over the hotel but my complaints about the room was it was extremely small. A lot of the times the iPad or app did not work so I could not control many of the features. I did love the lights and the aesthetics, but I couldn't fully get it. The water did not get hot and the air conditioner barely worked. Cool for the money but not worth it. I'd rather pay more for better amenities read more

Dude, do NOT stay here--these employees straight-up stole from my friend. My friend left their jewelry in the room, realized 24 hours after checkout, and called the hotel. They actually admitted they *found* the jewelry, so my friend went all the way back to pick it up. Guess what? Everything was there *except* a gold heart necklace that was super sentimental and had been with them for three years. So yeah, someone definitely pocketed it. The manager? Absolutely useless. Didn't care at all, wasn't helpful, and just kept brushing it off. My friend kept saying they left *all* the jewelry in the exact same place, but the manager couldn't be bothered. And tell me why the cheap $8 Amazon earrings and a random initial necklace made it back, but not the one that actually had value? How convenient. So my friend wasted their time, went all the way back for NOTHING, and got completely screwed over. And yeah, obviously it's on them for forgetting the jewelry in the first place, but if the hotel says they "found it," why even bother lying just to keep the good stuff? Insane. Just do yourself a favor and book a Hyatt or Marriott--at least they have decent customer service. read more

I just finished staying at the hotel for five nights and I definitely agree with the saying that you get what you pay for. Upon arrival I was warmly greeted by staff and I liked the automated check-in. Once I entered my room, I was pleasantly surprised at how cute and cozy the room was. It was a small room but perfect for me as I was alone on this trip. I loved being able to control the lights, temperature and TV with the room IPad. Very cool feature. I will say my bed was not very comfortable (thin stiff mattress) and the pillows were flimsy. Also the room walls are very thin and can hear the guests next to you. There's not many restaurants close by except the Subway across the street (closes at 6). I made the mistake of eating at the downstairs bar due to convenience. The food was terrible and overpriced and tasted like it came right our the freezer aisle (ordered meatballs and pizza). The drinks are also overpriced. Make sure you bring snacks with you and avoid pitching at the bar because the snack selection is limited snd expensive. I did like the coffee in the morning. The hotel has a rooftop bar but unfortunately it's only open Fri- Sun. This is odd to me as this is a big hotel draw and should be open every day. Overall I loved the customer service and vibe of the hotel and it's budget friendly. I think this is a hotel for people spending minimal time in their room. read more

This hotel is adorable & unique. Check in is not your traditional walk up to a reception situation. If you can figure it out, you check yourself in, pretty cool, but of course I needed help. The rooms are small and basic but very cute, clean and comfortable. I love the Scandinavian style design. If you stay here, do yourself a favor and order the French fries, they are amazing!!! read more

LOVED this hotel The staff was unmatched They were so helpful and fun and made us feel at home Loved the breakfast and the bar and the rooftop So many cool spots to take pics! The rooms are nice and controlled by an ipad The sheets were a bit dirty when we got there but they came and changed it immediately It was my husbands bday and they decorated the room, brought us champagne and a card It was truly amazing Will def return!!!! read more
