I hired Derek in install quartzite in a rental in Healdsburg. The installation became problematic when the lines (pattern) on the backsplash did not line up and it looked horrible. It appeared the installers were not experienced. Derek agreed to redo the part of the backsplash that needed correction. The second try went much better. The real problem is that I purchased 3 slabs for a very small kitchen. I did the same material on the backsplash as the counters. Derek told me there was some material left and he would save it for me since this job was one of 3 units I own. When I called to inquire about the left over material, Derek did not return my multiple calls and emails. Derek is hiding. read more

We contracted with DC Tile and Stone to fabricate and install the kitchen and bathroom countertops in our new home and were very disappointed. They were very inefficient when it came to cutting the stone and there was quite a bit of waste. In 2013 we had the same kitchen counters fabricated and installed by Dennett Tile. The 3 slabs we purchased in 2013 were exactly the same size and pattern as the ones we purchased for this job. Dennett Tile had more surface to cover yet they only used 2 ¼ of the 3 slabs. The pattern was very uniform so there should have been very little waste...yet one entire slab was wasted by DC Tile and Stone. In addition, the overhang on the kitchen and bathroom countertops is inconsistent and varies from one spot to another. This is sloppy work on the part of DC Tile and Stone. I would not recommend using this contractor. read more

We contracted Derek to do our bathroom remodels. We started with our master bathroom and have not been able to get to the other bathrooms due to his lack of professionalism and his inability to finish the job he was commissioned for. Very long story short: he put a commercial contractor on a very custom job and the quality of the work showed. Through out the whole experience we expressed our concerns along the way and he stifled or explained away. They all kept saying "we want you to love your bathroom" but when we pointed out the areas that we were not happy with it became a problem. At first Derek seemed very accommodating but as soon as the original job was "finished" and we were doing the final look overs, we saw all the issues we originally had concerns over and had even more issues that we found. All the sudden as soon as my husband pushed back against his opinion of the job, he agreed things weren't right. So he agreed to have additional custom contractors come to "fix" all the problems. The contractor "fixing" the issues was not confident in the proposed outcome of the job, and from what I was watching it was creating more problems. I spoke to him about it and then decided to reject the job entirely and thats when everything went haywire. Derek takes days and sometimes even a week or more to respond to correspondence. He even tried backing out of the the unfinished job and "walking away" because he didn't want to work with us anymore. He has even tried to use me as the scapegoat for his inability to make good decisions, and stated that I have been the one to not let him do his job and I kicked out his guys who were there to fix everything. All are false accusations because they were the ones that decided to leave knowing it was an unfixable job. His proposed fixes for the horrible original work, that he accepted by his guys, would not stand up to the standards that's a professional would uphold. We had an outside contractor come in and look over the work that has been done and he agreed we should reject the job. He also agreed that the proposed "fixes" were merely bandaids and would not really fix the job the way it should have looked in the first place. Overall my experience has been severely disappointing, insulting, angering and now we are left with an unfinished job with a contractor who ignores or takes forever to respond to our correspondence topped with excuses and delays. He is not willing to re-do the bathroom and wants to continue to fix it even though the fixes are not quality work. We did not have a upgraded job, this was a from scratch installation that should be perfect, not something we have to settle for with bandaid fixes all over it so he can finish the job and move on. Now we are faced with having to pay to buy more materials, demo etc.. because Derek and the DC tile and stone will not reimburse us for the horrific job that they installed. Overall I will never recommend him due to his lack of professionalism, his lying or his work that he stands by. It is horrific. read more

Derek also redid my entire master bathroom in travertine tile. We bought the high quality tile that he recommended from Ceramic Tile Center. He told us to buy this tile since it would perform well in a wet application, as it had NO filler. Two tiles in the shower cracked in half a few months after the installation. This was due to the installer forgetting to tape the seams in the hardibacker behind the tiles. When he came back to replace the tiles, he chipped the tiles surrounding the cracked tiles and knocked a corner off of the travertine niche in the shower. He can't blame the cracked/chipped tiles on poor quality, since this tile had no filler and was tile he recommended I purchase. He ended up putting a big wad of grout colored caulking over the chipped area and leaving it like that. I had to go back and scrape off the excess with a razor blade, so it would somewhat look like tile, not like a wart on the wall. The tile setter also installed floor tiles with cracked corners. When I pointed out the damage, his excuse was that he had hoped I wouldn't notice. But he couldn't remove them to put in fresh tiles, as he had already installed tile baseboards over them. The cracked portions weren't incredibly large, but it was still annoying that he intentionally installed the tiles that way. Had to call them back several times to fix grout issues. The tile setter did not grout between some of the tiles and I had to ask him multiple times before all the tiles were successfully grouted. Then months later, the grout would crack and would have to be replaced. read more

I worked in residential construction for many years, and know what the rules of the trade are and what is truthful and when someone repeatedly lies to me. Originally Derek appeared to be professional, however, when they were remodeling my kitchen countertop with expensive quartz, they short cut the material. He instructed his employees to CUT OFF THE TOP OF MY COUNTER to accommodate HIS error. This is ILLEGAL for one contractor to touch the work of another contractor without written consent from BOTH the other contractor (cabinet maker) AND the owner. He destroyed the integrity of the plywood that was to support a bar counter and took it off in its entirety, then instructed his employees to "just glue it to the 2x4s." I talked directly to Derek following this illegal maneuver and all he told me was that they had a "little trouble" with the backsplash and would install it the next day. When I was informed by the cabinet maker that his employees told them that "Boss said Derek was not going to pay for cutting a new piece, and just lower the counter" I called him on his deception. He had every opportunity to tell the truth, but chose to lie to me on several occasions. Had I not caught this deception, the integrity and strength of the countertop was not only compromised, but the backsplash would have been incorrectly cut to the wrong height. I again caught Derek in another lie wherein he outright lied about his guy not cutting out a wood notch out of the cabinet (again to hide their mistakes). He put that lie in writing. His employee, Salomon, told me that he had cut the wood from Derek's instructions, and even used my cabinetmaker's tools to poorly cut out a place for the bad mistake Derek tried to hide. It took four visits to make things okay, but in the process, when he yanked out the improperly installed countertop bar, it destroyed the wood panels on the fascia of the bar. My cabinetry people had to not only watch every move his employees made, but repair the damage that occurred. DO NOT TRUST DEREK KAHN. He will lie to your face. His company should not be Diamond Certified, and their work is mediocre at best. The 12" countertop was not accurate, wide at one end, and narrower at the other. Overall, he has caused significant stress and aggravation, with repeated trips for installation, lying and deception. As they say in the business, "Measure Twice - Cut Once." Apparently he only wants to make money and he is NOT present for installation, nor does he check the measurements of the final product before installation. STAY AWAY-FAR AWAY! read more

Just had our bathroom tiled and radiant heat mat installed by Derek from DC Tile. I have no idea where that negative review blasting this company came from but this was a pro job. Fast, clean, no mess, clean lines, and cuts. I'm a stickler for detail so when I see caulked edges near the shower and tub versus grout that means something. Communication was great. Derek had answers for all my questions but what I like the most is that he's current on new installation materials. Just because you watch HGTV doesn't mean you could do the job...if you think it's easy go ahead and try it! He even told me to watch the toilet on/off valve as they sometimes leak (push/pull valve). 5 Star!! read more

Finally AAA hired Derek to do an assessment, after which I asked AAA to hire DC Tile to redo the job for the third time... Must have been the charm, because, even though one of the bathroom walls is "bowed", the tile setting was so "on point" that no one can tell! The tile is straight and aligned both ways. Don re-tiled our kitchen and several patios, and all I can say is that I can't wait to work with him again. He is a true craftsman. In the kitchen, he was meticulous cutting tiles to fit precisely along the crown molding of the cabinets. Another installer would have just made straight cuts and filled the gaps with grout. Not Don. His tiles were cut like puzzle pieces to fit the exact shape of whatever they were next to. In the patios, he laid the tiles in such a way, that the tiles fit precisely without being cut at all. It's a true joy to look at them, for someone as type A as me. I worked with many subcontractors during our renovation and honestly, I have met only a couple who are as dedicated and careful and reliable and reasonably priced as Don. One last thing. The kitchen tile was ordered from Italy and several pieces arrived broken. Don basically did magic by using what we had strategically so that we would have enough. Another tile person would have said "sorry, lady. Order some more and see in you six months to finish the job.." I give Don my highest recommendation. read more
