For my first solo meal abroad ever, I wanted to grab lunch with a bit of a view and a location not far from Dam Square. That's when I fell upon De Drie Graefjes and their cozy corner location. I sat down right away and was given a menu by a waitress that didn't really want to be there and/or really dislikes Americans lol.. maybe she was tired of tourists? ANYWAY, I ordered the smoked salmon sandwich on corn bread which came with a side salad and tortilla chips. It was nothing short of amazing. The portion was HUGE and this smoked salmon was the best I had on my trip (and I just so happened to eat a ton of smoked salmon since it's a very popular brekkie/brunch option here). The corn bread, baked in house, was to die for. I shouldn't have eaten that whole sandwich, but I did... and then I moved onto the salad. The dressing on here was super fruity (maybe blueberry? Not sure, but it was delicious). Unexpected flavors but totally genius. A different and much friendlier waitress brought me my check, and then I paid. When I left, the first unfriendly waitress almost chased me out the door for not paying the check (with her) until her colleague also confirmed I had already paid. Guilty until proven innocent at this place, apparently. So, all in all, 5 stars for the food and ambiance and negative stars for the waitress who treated me like a criminal, basically lol ***FYI, I met a TON of people in Amsterdam and almost everyone was friendly and chipper. Just not that first waitress. I may or may not be salty about this still. read more

A good little breakfast spot. This cafe is tucked away from the main hustle and bustle of the square so it's not too busy on the sidewalks. We ordered coffee, champagne, avocado toast with scrambled eggs, and a sandwich. My husband raved about his sandwich - the chips were just from a bag. I didn't love my avocado toast. The avocado was just mashed with no seasonings added, so I definitely needed to add salt and pepper. Same for the eggs that came with the toast, apart from the addition of chives, there wasn't much flavor to the eggs. I had a few bites but then was otherwise done. We also saw they had fresh OJ, so we ordered a glass and made ourselves some fresh OJ mimosas! That was good. Service was okay, nothing great or terrible about it. read more

I came here because a lot of people said it's the best red velvet in town . However the red velvet cake was really dry . The frosting was pretty good tho . The veggie sandwich was ok too . Nothing crazy . However I am giving four stars because the carrot cake was VERY good ! I would definitely go back for the carrot cake . read more

Dan The Cookie Man is awesome! If you haven't tried his stuff, you don't know what you're missing. I especially like his Black Bottom cupcakes which are to die for! Dense double chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting.. mmm.... *drools*. Or a fluffier Red Velvet cake/cupcake with cream cheese frosting... or the absolutely amazing carrot cake... or the large soft (and NOT crunchy) bitter Double Chocolate cookies.... The cafe itself offers a variety of awesome looking dishes such as sandwiches and salads but I haven't tried them because I'm always tempted by the cupcakes, pies and cookies. read more

Ok, let me tell you first that i'm VERY picky with sweets and baking goods! This place has a very nice red velvet cake (and it's actually very famous for it) and it's delicious, of course. I think it's rather heavy though, and the frosting can be a bit overwhelming, but if you are sharing one piece with someone, you can easily make it! :) So far, it's the best red velvet dessert I've tasted here. They also have other pies, and I've only tried the red velvet cake and the lemon meringue pie, and the lemon pie was average, but flavourful. They had a cheesecake I currently have my eye on, and it looked SO good. Very fluffy and still thick somehow, just how I like it. They have a great tea selection and good coffee. The interior is super cosy, which I love, and it's great for some sit-down with a friend or boyfriend, and people watching, relaxing... And having some cake! I'll be going back for sure, probably to eat more red velvet cake as I've no self-control! And the service was super-friendly! read more

Amazing chocolate swirl cheesecake - very dense, fresh tasting. The carrot cake was very moist and very good but a bit more spices would have made it even better. It almost tasted like fruit cake because of the lack of spices. Loved the cream cheese thick icing though! The mint tea is refreshing, served with big mint leaves. Friendly service. Good views on the street from upstairs. I recommend this bakery for an afternoon snack and the sandwiches for lunch looked delish as well! Note: be careful in the stairs going up. I sat down here for lunch and a cup of coffee. It is a very nice, old, and authentic place and is located a bit off of the beaten path. I had a club sandwich pollo which had a good amount of chicken, avocado, and lettuce on it. Taste was quite good. I ordered the sandwich on dark bread with which I was not very impressed by the taste of the bread. Also ordered a latte macchiato that taste nice and creamy. Staff was friendly. read more

Ok, so being American - I had no idea when I ate here that it was supposed to be an American Bakery! I remember thinking "oh, so cupcakes have blown up in A-dam too." Lovely little cafe, and the cupcakes were great. Enjoyed a delicious sammie that was generously loaded with goat cheese (that is decidedly not American - they kind of skimp on the goat cheese over here). I went here with a few friends after an event nearby. We went for coffee and a light snack. It being a small place and having a large event nearby the place was packed. There was a ten minute wait or so for a table upstairs. It was cramped waiting in the hallway with a few other people. The staff had to squeeze by several times. They were quite friendly and didn't seem to mind so much about having to squeeze by. The upstairs is gotten to by a very narrow and very steep spiral stair case. I could see where more than a few would have problems negotiating this staircase. The second floor was also quite small and being it was so busy it was packed and noisy. Regardless, there were many having lunch while others were having a snack like us. Two had the cheesecake. One had a cupcake for there and one to take away. It didn't make it out of the restaurant though. I had the carrot cake. It was good, flavorful, moist and not an enormous piece like I'd expected. I was glad of that. The two who had the cheesecake said they liked it while the one who had the cupcakes loved her selection. I liked my carrot cake but I wasn't wowed by it nor did I love it. There are many other things on their menu to try though so I will be back. They're also dog friendly. read more

By chance we saw Anthony Bourdain filming at de drie graefjes a couple months back. We figured if it was good enough for him to feature in his show, it must be good. We had Sunday lunch there and ordered the Hot Piggy and tomato soup. Hot Piggy is a warm sandwich with bacon, melted cheddar cheese and spicy mustard. I only stopped by for a quick pick-up of a red velvet cupcake as I left van Ness in disappointment but can not say that I found anything here to look particularly appetising. The girls behind the counter seemed more interested in being popular and were very chatty with the customers before me but lacked any warmth when taking my order. Bit of a shame. The cupcake itself was fine I suppose. Didn't really have that typical texture, twang and depth of flavour you expect from a proper red velvet cupcake, even the colour wasn't right and obviously not well mixed as there was a cocoa brown layer on the bottom of the cake. I don't know, maybe I'm just spoiled by the cupcakes I used to buy at a now closed bakery in Utrecht which were absolute perfection. This cupcake however just gave me the sugar shakes. A charming and casual little corner cafe/bistro just steps from the Royal Palace and de Bijenkorf, known mostly for it's European take on American style pastries (the carrot cake is out of this world). The brunch menu has a bit of everything, ranging from your traditional American pastrami sandwich, cheese omelets, and various burgers (you definitely can't go wrong with the very fluffy goat cheese and ham omelet). Most of the seating is outside on two beautiful cobblestone alleyways, lined with small mom and pop shops. Seating is first come first served (with no reservations), so be sure to snag a seat quickly when one becomes available as this place seems to be consistently at capacity. The service is fast and friendly (this is the Netherlands after all), and the food is very affordable for the hype this place attracts. A must go when you're in town, whether you're looking for a hearty meal or just a quick snack from the bakery. read more

after wandering around a very cold amsterdam, and finding ourselves in 'interesting' territory we couldnt have been happier to find this little place. It looked clean, they spoke english, and the food smelt lovely! and it was. I've not had such a nice hot chocolate and cheese on toast since i came back, which is a little sad, but also a great advert. the service was a little muddled, but once the food arrived it was great, and cheap which was a very welcome thing. I don't know about their cafe, but I can say that this is a terrible place to get a wedding cake. I went in there and told them I was looking for a wedding cake and would like some samples to try. I said I was looking for chocolate or strawberry cake or slagroomtaart, and an angry baker that was working in the front started to yell that they don't do chocolate cake. Even though they have a turtle cake which is basically chocolate cake with nuts and caramel on it. Then the woman behind the counter told me they can't sell me chocolate cake if it's not one of their standard cakes because otherwise how would they know if they made it well? She told me if I wanted slagroomtaart then I should just go to Hema. Then the baker was yelling at me about how do I imagine a strawberry cake is made, and I told him I guess it's vanilla cake with strawberries in the middle and he yelled 'You mean white sponge cake?!' and I said I didn't know, because I'm not the baker. He then huffed and went into the back before coming back out and asking me if I was Canadian. It was a very strange experience. Then the woman who coordinates wedding cakes finally got off the phone and told me they only do wedding cakes in red velvet, and carrot. They also only do plain white cakes without fancy decorations on them. If I wanted decorations she could refer me to a baker that does that. She charged me full price (3.50 each) for 5 pieces of cake when I asked again to have some samples, so I doubt I'll be coming back here. Between being charged full-price for samples, and the baker yelling at me for wanting chocolate cake, they seem like a nightmare to work with. For what it's worth, their red velvet cake was pretty good. The apple taart was forgettable, the carrot cake and lemon merengue were decent, and the turtle pie was tasteless and dry. read more

Dan the American baker was rude. I simply asked if he was opened. He replied " does the sign say closed". I was carrying heavy luggage, made a special effort to find this place, and didn't realize the cafe was on the other corner. If this idiot had said yes the entrance is around the corner, I would have patronized his business. What an asshole! Who cares if his bread is good. Perhaps overpriced London has soured my expectations, but food here was much better than anticipated. The velvet cake is delicious, the club sandwich generously portioned. The locale is quiet and out of way despite being near downtown. And everything is modestly priced to boot. read more

We got a recommendation for De Drie Graefjes from another (fully booked) restaurant where we tried to go for lunch. Ended up on the very cozy and pleasant back deck of De Drie Graefjes - The American Bakery and enjoyed a delicious lunch - my husband had the salmon sandwich, and I had the smoked chicken salad. Both filling and delicious! The service was wonderful too! But the real reason I am ranking this bakery with 5 starts is their carrot cake. It truly is the best I have had in my whole life! Deliciously rich without being overly heavy or in any way greasy... it had loads of sweet and tender carrot, plus golden raisins and pineapple chunks... simply sublime! We remarked on it as we were paying, and were told that they get it from an American baker, who had just one first prize in a carrot cake competition at the American bookstore nearby... and no wonder! Thanks to a local friend we met up here for breakfast. What a great gem! We sat upstairs and had a view of the road below right next to the "New" Church. The server was pleasant and the food was good with decent prices and great portions! They even have a take-away area with delicious-looking cakes and cupcakes. Although the pastries in general are ok the service is just plain horrible and rude even for Dutch standards.

Cookies and sandwiches were ok, but the cupcakes were great. Not american portions, but tastes almost as good as the kind you can get back in the states. I have never had service as rude as this in my life! Me and three other girls walked past, the place looked really cute and the cakes looked tasty. However we received nothing but rude service and the food was mediocre at best. Flavor was lacking and the apple pie my friend ordered was dry and served cold. When asking for the bill on the way to the toilet we were told we could pay downstairs, with lashings of attitude at the mere notion of receiving a bill at the table. When we came down to pay we were told that not only could we not pay by card but that we could also not pay individually as we would use all her small change despite the fact they were closing and we were her last customers. She condescendingly explained to us that we needed to pay together and that we would just have to deal with it amongst ourselves. It was overpriced and the waitresses were unpleasant and unwelcoming.
