A quick stop here for a sweet treat as we toured our way through Amsterdam's food scene. Holtcamp is known for cakes, pastries and a whole lot of other things. It's a very small shop on a very busy street so it would be easy enough to miss. That would be a mistake. You'll want to ask for the Eberhardjes cookies. If there's such a thing as an official cookie of Amsterdam, these are the ones. Named for the late mayor, they're delicious and perfect to bring home because of the "XXX" baked into them, the symbol of the city. A royal patisserie with THE BEST croquettes in Amsterdam. Founded in 1886. A bit out of the way but worth the trip. We spent the morning at Vondelpark then stopped by here for lunch. There are benches across the street to where you can sit and enjoy your treats. Best to eat the fresh cooked croquettes ASAP for the full experience. The croquettes are crispy and rich (€2,95 each for veal or cheese, €3,60 for shrimp). Would have loved to try the bitterballen but you can only buy them frozen for take-home cooking. We also tried two fruit tarts (€3,95 each) and they were delicious. This old time gem of Amsterdam is a must-visit. Saw mostly locals or the occasional advanced tourist. read more

This place was on my list of places to visit but I had given up looking for it when VUALA for some miraculous reason, I had stumbled upon it. The inside is very small with display cases of their cookies, cakes, and chocolate. I had read reviews about their croquettes and decided to get one. They have options of Veal, Shrimp, or regular Cheese. I forget the prices but they're around 2 euros, with the veal & shrimp being slightly more than the cheese. It takes about 5 minutes to be made, but it's well worth the wait! It's on the smaller side so it's definitely a snack food. The veal one tastes just like a bitterballen - a thick creamy mushroom gravy-type sauce with little bits of veal, with a beautiful fried outside. I came back the following day, just in time before they closed the shop at 5pm (literally ran inside and told them I was only there for one thing and they kindly obliged) to get the Corina chocolate. I had seen it when I went to get the croquette, but wasn't feeling in the chocolate mood - but I knew I needed to try it before I left Amsterdam because it's not every day you see a chocolate named after you! (especially when you have such a weird name like mine haha) - this was 1 euro (price is weighed) and it was dark chocolate wrapped around a dark chocolate ganache, topped with a milk chocolate halo. My god, how did this patisserie get 5 stars?? Did I just happen to come on an 'empty freezer and pantry' day? Most of everything in the bakery looked yummy and the staff were very nice. Price was a bit too high but I thought it should be worth the taste. I bought a perfect looking open-faced apple tart and some ginger cookies (I love and was in the mood for ginger) Apple tart was terrible. Apple was too soft and sweet. Like maybe older apple tart.. Been sitting on the self too long. Crust was too soggy and flavorless.. Can't taste the butter in there at all. Everything just screams 'old' and has a bad after taste of the freezer aged odor. Terrible. 3-4 euro Ginger cookies- lots of small julienned crystallized ginger but the ginger flavor is a little too mild. Too sweet. The cookie was very soft, flavorless. Again, soggy and old. Better than the apple tart but still bad. 3.5 euro-ish. Will not return and DO NOT come here. read more

Beautiful selection of pastries and cakes. Went here today to pick a birthday cake for the loved one. He is a big fan of marzipan cakes and they had a cake that I hope will satisfy his taste which ordered ahead of time. Cakes are between €15-€20. Read somewhere online that there is usually a line but on Monday at noon, I was the only one there. They can also do custom writing. Make sure you ask for it. Ooh my, had I ever thought that I would find a kroketten that come sooo close to those my sweet grandma once made for me as a kid? Kroketten or croquettes are Dutch pride. And when visiting this country you have to try one. Maybe you did not expect to find croquettes in this pastry bakery. And if you would find them, you would have never expected them to fry them for you! Holtkamp does! They offer different kind of croquettes of the highest quality: meat (veal), shrimps and cheese. They also have mini ones if you want to impress your guest at a party. In my memory, my grandma's croquettes were always the best. And they will. Unfortunately she never decided to start a shop and sell them. The family recipe stays within the secret boundaries of our family. Tracked down this bakery for breakfast. After experience pastries in Paris, I didn't think that Amsterdam would be just as good. This cute little bakery had it all. Food: Beautiful sweets - cakes, pastries, cookies, etc. Ordered: Randomly enough, they sell delicious croquettes, which are just as popular as their sweets. I ordered one shrimp and one meat croquette (just under 3 euros each), as well as a custard tart. Croquette: hot and crispy on the outside. Filled with a rich filling of meat, cheese, and potato. Delicious. Custard tart: a balanced custard that isn't too sweet, nor two rich/thick, baked into an equally balanced crust. I feel as though there aren't enough stars to fulfill the amazingness of Holtkamp. This place is heaven on Earth! First, the creme suisse is TO DIE FOR. Seriously, if someone offered me one in exchange for walking in front of the psychotic bicycles of Amsterdam, I would no doubt take the creme suisse. While sitting in the Vondelpark yesterday, my dad had his first encounter with Holtkamp while enjoying an apple tart. Apparently it's a 300 year recipe. Well, 300 years does a body good because that tart was fan-tart-tastic, and I'm not even an apple as a pastry fan! Bottom line, this is a life altering, experience. I think it's a miss. Croquettes are only decent. Not worth a visit. I am surprised, as is another yelper, at these reviews. I tried the fast food croquettes for one euro and appetizer croquettes at a nearby restaurant, both better than the proclaimed world famous ones here. It is just fried cheese with shrimp, you really cannot expect much. There is a much better bakery down the street that I would visit. Unless croquettes are your favorite snack and you are in the area AND you are willing to wait for five minutes AND you like overpriced cheap snacks, I would avoid. Who knows though, I am no expert in this, just a guy who likes quality for expensive prices. No potatoes here either. read more

My Love and I organised The Great Easter Meeting (just a afternoon party, get together on the first day of Easter) we ended up with 30 friends and family. The menu? Champagne & Bitterballen! First my friends were like: what? What a wast of very good champagne. (Got two boxes from De Eekhorn) but than...? This are not your average Bitterballen people!! These are the best gourmet Bitterballen you can find! We bought them frozen, bought a fryer (frituurpan! Hahaha!) and it was perfect... Than, I also got two boxes of bonbons from Holtkamp, but they never made the table... My Love and his friend found then the night before, they slaughtered about 20 of the best chocolates in town. No!! Rrrreally, these are the best. If someone thinks different? I'll put my bet down for a face off, aaaaanytime!! Well, I'm happy that my friends and family loved the bubbles and balls. I walked by this place today and the pastries in the window looked so good I had to go in and get a few. I tried an almond hand pie (my term). Delicious flaky crust filled with almond paste. So good! I also tried a creme filled little cake with cinnamon on top (I think) and then a beautiful little tart with pater creme and a pistachio on top. I also purchased a small box of pretty cookies to give to a friend. I will definitely be back to try more of the amazing looking products! read more

I was at a cafe adjacent to a concert hall and they served Holtkamp's heart butter cookies with their tea. I was absolutely blown away by the taste in such a simple, thin cookie. After two tea visits, I was adamant about grabbing some of these cookies to bring back home to the states with me and so I walked to the store and nabbed me SEVEN boxes! I'm so sad that they don't deliver to the US - I will have to savor each bite slowly or make another trip to AMS soon! read more

Best bakery I have ever experienced. We tried three items: cheesecake, apple pie, and an assortment of cookies. Everyone in the group thought that each item was the best example ever experienced. Apple pie with perfect crust, raisins, and a great balance of sweetness. Each component of the cheesecake (crust, cake and jam frosting) all stood on their own but put together it ended up perfect.
