As a lot of reviewers have said already, the food is hit or miss (mostly miss). The customer service is horrible. They acted like I wasn't there for 10 minutes before they took my order. I ordered the cassava with chicken and beef and it came with cow foot only (mostly fat). I called to see if they would rectify the error and she argued me down that that's what I ordered. First time visiting this place and I was NOT impressed. Old decor and uninviting. I ordered the egusi soup with chicken, which was mostly the backbone of the chicken and the actual tail of the chicken. And too much egusi, not enough mixture of greens and the color was off. I ask for spinach, they had none, I asked for goat, they had none. This was 3pm, so why not. My friend ordered the jollof rice with chicken. Because I love my brothers and sisters of Africa, I want to send you some recommendations to hopefully get your star ratings up and thus your profits. 1) Spray the place with Raid at the beginning of the day, I have been there multiple times now and gnats,flies etc is unacceptable and unsanitary. 2) Turn down the volume of the music in the dining room. People come to dine, converse. It is also difficult for your kind servers to hear the orders. 3) Follow up with clientele after serving food. "More of your beverage?", " How's the food". It shows that you care, and I know you do :-) -that's why you are reading this. 4) Present a detailed bill. Having your staff do the math in their heads is just not professional (nor correct). 5) Please take down the signs on the windows with the improper pricing. It's actually illegal to advertise a price that does not exist. It's called Bait & Switch 6) An unprovoked "Thank You" shows appreciation of your client for getting in a car, taking the time to drive there and most importantly choosing YOUR restaurant above all of the other wonderful hotels in the DMV area. I am giving this place 4 stars only because the food is overpriced. Other than that I give the food 5 stars. I ordered several times Egusi with fish on the side. It seems like a small portion but I actually ate it for two meals. It is so delicious. This is the only dish I order from a Nigerian restaurant. I am am Egusi connoisseur. Came here today and will never be back. The lady who took my order was short and mean to the two customers that came in and seemed annoyed that people were coming in to order food. I asked for cassava leaves with CHICKEN - paid $15 for it and when I got home I realized she'd given me ONE piece of GOAT and the rest was some kinda white chewy fat looking type meat that I didn't ask for. I hesitated to write this review because I do like the food here. However, I recently visited this restaurant and was very disappointed with the food safety and sanitation practices I observed. Uncovered food, specifically rice, while flies were flying around because the door frequently opens and closes. Masks improperly worn by staff and visitors who are known by restaurant staff are walking in from outside heading straight to the kitchen without hand washing or a hair covering. One man walked in from outside with money in his hand and walked straight into the kitchen handling the money over the food while speaking with a cook! Unbelievable. I have no plans of returning. I decided to have De Ranch for lunch today. I called to place an order for myself and a co worker and received the worse service I have ever come in contact with. The woman answering the phone was rude. I asked for the Egusi with Goat meat And FuFu. She gets upset and starts speaking very rudely and loudly saying my food was going to be expensive and if I get it with chicken it will be cheaper. I let her know that was not what I wanted. She rudely asked me how many pieces of goat did I want to put in it. As if Egusi with Goat didn't come on the menu an as if I was just getting on her nerves for placing an order. I asked her about pricing although I saw the prices online and she gave prices that were not only unreasonable but she made them up as she went her exact words were " Im charging you $4 for gratuity and $3 for taxes". Please be mindful I was ordering To GO. Next my co worker actually gave her my card to swipe for payment and she said that she couldn't use my card because it wasn't working and it would charge me twice, she ends up swiping my card and nothing was actually ever wrong with the machine she was just being very nasty. My co worker also sent me a photo of Raid Spray for eliminating flying insects sitting on the counter where other customers food were as well as the cash register. My food came up to 18 dollars for a small portion of one of my most favorite dishes. Very disappointing and wont be eating from here ever again. read more

My husband's chicken was well seasoned, as was my oxtail. The rice and beans were pretty good as well. Service was warm and friendly. The woman was great at interacting with my social butterfly 5 year old. The reasons for 4 stars instead of 5: Food took quite a while to come out, like a long time even for freshly made food. They were out of multiple things from our original order (I originally wanted jerk goat, my husband originally wanted fried rice as his side, and our 5 year old originally wanted a bowl of vegetable soup.) Yelp really needs to provide the option of giving businesses a '0' star rating - Walking into De Ranch you may expect pleasant smiles but that seemed to be about it. It is incredibly overpriced (think $11s for an appetizer of pepper soup) 17.50 for Curry Goat - which tasted pretty much like a box of terribly old curry powder that had been mixed with water - the goat meat was clearly an after thought - there were three small pieces (seriously not an exaggeration - 17.50 isnt crazy for a curry goat at a caribbean place but it usually means they give you a ton of food) that hadn't been seasoned at all and one was entirely bone. The plantains were old, dry and had no flavor except 'bad' just like the rest of the food. They didn't serve water - so once the meal arrived my wife asked if we could get some water. The lady said sure do you want soda, juice etc - we replied 'just water thanks' She brought out two bottles of water which we were later charged $2s for. Unfortunately, this place feels like a total scam, which is sad because it seems like a bit of stereotype Nigerian businesses seem to have. BTW- Decor will give you a migraine. We should have known better I guess considering we were the only people in the restaurant on a Friday evening. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at De-Ranch today. I needed to eat and get in out of the cold so I took a chance and, man, am I happy I did. I was greeted by a lovely lady named Connie, and attended to by a very talented young man who handles himself with the skill and dignity of a true chef. I am a transplant from San Diego, where we have a lot of Caribbean and African restaurants. I have traveled widely and "eat local" everywhere I go. I have a long-standing reputation among my friends as the guy who always knows where the really authentic, down-home ethnic restaurants are. From Abyssinian to Yemeni, I know my cuisines and I'm the man who finds those amazing "hole in the wall" restaurants that offer absolutely the best food and truest experiences. De-Ranch is one of those rare pearls. It reminds me of a great place I went to last summer in Nassau. The decor is genuinely Afro-Caribbean. The colors are bright and the atmosphere is just the right combination of warm, homey welcome and professional establishment, with just a touch of artistic chaos. I don't like Euro-haute cusine and if I wanted a Denny's staffed by uniformed robots, I would go to one. I ordered the very reasonably priced chicken in red sauce lunch. It came with Joloff rice, fried plantains and a nice little salad. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered a second plate to take home for dinner.
