It's a cool spot, and customer service was great. Unfortunately, the food missed the mark. The plantains were undercooked, the steak Suya wasn't chopped into bite size pieces like usual, which made them difficult to eat, some pieces were also tough and chewy. Great decor on the inside with art work and nicely arranged tables; very neat and tidy for a spot that people generally take the food to go. The folks who work here are very friendly and patient, as I had tons of questions that they answered with no issue. THE FOOD: wow, wow, wow. The place is beautifully decorated with nice images of African culture and a constant brown, orange, and rust color scheme. I am not a fan of this style of jollof rice so I won't say yay or nay for it. The wings are really good and flavorful, but the name of this place is Spice for a reason. I was expecting less Spice and more sweetness because of the name. I could only eat 3 of the 6 that came with my meal because they were too much for me. But trust and believe, I'll eat the rest later. There was heat, but there was still good flavor. The spinach was very good too. It had a unique seasoning that made it delicious. I like to expand my flavor palette and explore other types of food to break up the monotony. I called beforehand to ensure they'd be open. Pay attention to the flow of traffic in the parking lot and the idiots that race through the parking lot. Located in a strip mall like area, parking wasn't bad but is shared by adjacent businesses and not a chore. There is a kiosk at the front to place your order. The menu overhead supports advertising what the prices are and when ordering, you can customize. I appreciate that I couldn't make up my mind to order salmon or lamb, luckily there's an option to do half and half. I essentially got two lamb chops and a portion of salmon that sufficed. This does give first timers and returning customers a chance to explore more of the menu. There was a lot of confusion when ordering and the guy got my side dish wrong. I wanted plantains and he gave me jollof rice. While I like Jollof rice, I was focused on plantains. Well, we decided to dine in and that's when I saw I had the wrong side. I walked to the counter and he later brought me out plantains. The jollof rice had a taste similar to when a dish burns at the bottom but the top is salvageable. However, this burnt taste was permeated throughout the jollof rice. I said no biggie, let me get to the plantains. Man, I opened that container and they were burnt. It's like there are cooking items at a high heat and not taking care and time when making things. The spinach side was on point. It was cooked to my liking and the sprinkling of spice they add to garnish complemented it well. The salmon was cooked properly as was the lamb. The spice and onions added made it more flavorful and gave a different taste profile that I enjoyed. They have a variety of soft drinks and some they promote that they make. The Zogo lemonade was flavorful and is pre-measured so not something that's poured and you could ask for refills. Sadly, I didn't see anyone maintaining the cleanliness of the dining room. Patrons came and went and while some were cleaner than others, I feel that if you offer a dine in option, you should practice sanitation. There is a wait for your food but it wasn't bad. A lot of confusion among the workers and no clear manager or shift supervisor to help answer questions or give direction. From the few bites I was able to eat, I was not a big fan of the jollof, this wasn't my first time trying jollof and the taste just isn't for me. This location is found in a medium-sized strip mall (Queen's Chapel Shopping Center on Route 500, in Hyattsville) that's close to the DC border. It's next to a CVS and not far from a Lidl store. Just to be absolutely clear: this isn't the Mixt Food Hall location on Route 1, in Brentwood. The staff member who recently handled my order said that this spot has only been open for 2 months, since February 2024. Therefore, not many folks know about it. Having been a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa a while back, I can say with confidence that this food business is serving up the real deal--it's authentic West African cuisine and sorely lacking in the DMV. The menu is carefully selected and features mostly Nigerian dishes. However, Jollof Rice, one of the offerings, is claimed by many West African nations. Bear in mind that their Jollof Rice is Nigerian style; Malians and Senegalese, for example, prepare their Jollof Rice differently. I consider Jollof Rice to be like potato salad here in the US; there are lots of ways to fix it, depends on how your people like it. The Suya sauce, which is put on all the meat dishes, is lovely--it can be ordered mild (original) or hot. Both have their charms. I love the chicken wings as the meat selection, but there's many more. The Efo riro spinach dish, referred to as a stew, isn't a stew to me at all, more like a side of spinach, but whatever one wants to call it's--it's super flavorful and knocks my socks off. Efo riro is definitely a signature dish from Nigeria, specifically the Yoruba people, one of the largest ethnic groups in the country. The plantains are prepared expertly too; don't miss them. There's also chicken and lamb chop suya. The plantain and jollof is also great. I highly recommend the chicken wings. They have an awesome flavor profile. I recommend getting the suya and the wings spicy as well. The service is pretty minimal here but the staff are helpful when you have questions. You order yourself on the screens at the counter. You can eat it there or take it to go. They have some west African art on the walls and play afrobeat in the restaurant. They have a limited number of tables but we've never had an issue getting one. Wow, so I have been wanting to try this place for a very long time now, especially after hearing about it from peers and other Yelpers! I chose a side of joloff rice and plantains for the lamb chops, and a side of joloff rice and egusi spinach for the salmon. I also ordered a side of stew to drizzle over my rice. Upon picking up my food, I could see the restaurant was packed, which is always a good sign. The ambiance was very lively and upbeat, imagine the inside of a Nando's. The service was okay and could be better, the people at the register kind of lingered and stood around before finally asking me "How they could help me." Greet your customers as soon as they arrive to the counter, and ask how you can help them, this makes a huge difference in the customer experience! Now onto the food, the spice wings were beyond delicious! Fried to a crisp and seasoned well. I haven't had wings this delicious in a very long time! The salmon suya, oh my gosh!!! I have tried the food truck located at the Bowie Town Center but felt cheated as the food is never hot at the food truck and they do not have pepper sauce or stew which are too fairly easy and small things to offer in a truck. Here are the pros and cons of this establishment. Pros: the food is prepared to order and therefor was piping hot. The quality of my suya steak was amazing huge chunks, tender and fresh. The portions were huge I have enough for three servings, well worth the $24. Cons: since it's cooked to order expect your meal to take at minimum 30 minutes or more -You also have to order via a kiosk so you are unable to speak to a person and ask questions prior to ordering -they do not accept cash -typically everywhere I go to get some type of suya pepper sauce is free or at least one comes with your meal but not here you pay 59 cents for a little cup that's only half filled.
