HATED IT then, but I gave it another shot (well, many now), and I'm so glad I did. Recently went there for lunch and did takeout of what I enjoy the most: white rice and stew with chicken and spinach (nothing spicy, please). The portions are LARGE; the food is well seasoned and very tasty. The location is within a mall, decor is takeout style, nothing spectacular. It's a small place with a huge sign. I usually take my food to go. They have small eating tables inside and outside (inside the mall) if that makes sense. Their service is decent. They always allow me to test some items to ensure it's not too spicy. They are nice, not welcoming, but not mean. Their faces always have a perplexed look like they are trying to figure you out and not judge you (scrunched up face). As you're ordering, you can also take a quick peek behind the staff serving you to see what and how they cook the food. I like that. I ordered from this restaurant thru Uber Eats. I am a first-timer so maybe this was on off day. I ordered cassava leaves for lunch but it was not a very enjoyable experience for my taste buds. The white rice was a perfect consistency but it was un- (or under-) seasoned. I paid $18.99 (not including Uber's fees, tax, or tip) but I only got 3 small pieces of tough and dry beef. I enjoy spice so the spice level was perfect, however, I needed much more of the actual cassava leaves to cover the taste of unsalted rice and dry beef. Passed by this place sooo many times walking through the mall, but I never stopped in... until now! There are a few tables and a big menu outside the restaurant itself, so I took a minute to look at that. I decided to get the porridge yam (Asaro) with chicken and greens. It took about 20 minutes, so I decided to run to the gym and get a quick workout in while waiting. It took another minute or so when I got back, but the staff were very friendly and apologetic for the wait! They showed me the food before putting it in the bag. I got very excited! I got home, started a movie and dug in. The chicken and greens were good, but the Asaro was DEFINITELY the star of the show. So very flavorful and satisfying! My only wish is that there was more of the porridge itself! I could have an entire bowl of that alone! I will definitely be back to Jodeem to try more menu items. read more

This place is inside the Greenbelt Plaza Mall next to a Super Beauty store. I came to this location because of the good reviews and it was close. I was in the mood for Egusi soup with fufu. My son wanted curried goat. The service was ok from a store of this level. The Egusi was good...like Nigerian fast food good. Not great. The curried goat was flavored well but hardly any meat. It was almost entirely skin, fat, bone and gristle. I showed this to the servant and asked him for some actual meat. He brought me more skin, fat and gristle. WTH. Went here to inquire on catering as I enjoyed their food the first time I went here. Met the owner himself who, unfortunately happens to have an ill-mannered attitude. I wanted specific prices for the tray sizes of items I'm interested in. He won't give them to me as he said his staff already verbally informed me that. I told him that I want them in writing so I won't forget and it's helpful to me that way. He then absurdly said that it's their policy not to give individual prices and would rather give me a total amount. I told him, how in the earth would we know specifically how much the price of each tray would be if he won't write it down for me. He looked at me unmoved with a sharp expression on his face as he stared at me. He kept saying no to giving out any information in writing (food pricing!) like it's a secret that he is trying to protect. He looked annoyed instead of making an effort to salvage the situation. To cut the story short, he is obviously too lazy, arrogant and does not know how to treat his customers with courtesy and respect. I was taken aback by how rude this owner acted the way he did. Instead of trying to gain a happy customer, he drove me away by his behavior over his ridiculous policy. Maybe he thinks he has made it to the top already and he doesn't care if he loses one customer in me. Not the type of establishment I would recommend for anyone to patronize. I'd rather give my business to some place else where they know how to treat and assist customers pleasantly and respectfully. So, before that happens run and try Jodeem's yummy African cuisine that rivals DC's Bukom Cafe. With a focus on providing good value and old-fashioned service. I'm hooked. My go to is always pepper soup and Egusi stew. Pepper Soup- Aromatic, intensely flavored with bitter, sweet and somewhat herby broth with some astringency. Oh and tender goat. They served it frozen so I could enjoy it fresh the next day. Egusi- A West African Classic, enjoyed in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Cameroon. Egusi is a wild member of the gourd family, with very dry skin and bitter flesh. It's not so well known by Westerners- unlike our other famous peanut stew or tomato stew. This could be attributed to the star ingredient but I highly recommend you get in your car and drive to this uninspired strip mall and try it. You will also find Fufu (Foofoo), Banku, Kenkey and Garii (gari) which are served alongside soups and stews. Many dishes with Spinach, Bitters and Bologie or fish and meat with palm oil and groundnut. You will see plenty of beans, fried patties (try the fish) and tomatoes. I really hate to write this because for a while this has been my go-to carryout to satisfy my taste buds for African cuisine. So today I ordered #10 from the menu, the Cassava Leaves with rice and chicken and a side of spinach. On Sundays they open at 1pm. I arrived about an hour after they opened thinking I would receive a FRESH meal. Well lets just say it was not. The rice was good as usual. The spinach exceptional as usual. But that chicken was very questionable. I can tell fresh from old and that chicken was OLD. It was hard and chewy. And this is not the first time I have received OLD chicken. I must say the owner and food servers are really nice. This place has always looked clean. So I am on the fence as to when and if I will return. Yay! I finally didn't run straight home and dive in without getting a picture of my meal. So, without further ado - - here's my review of my beloved Jodeem African Restaurant. I don't live within 30 minutes of the restaurant but I am a frequent customer because the food is AMAZING! It's called Jodeem African restaurant, it's more of a carry out inside of a strip mall, you can choose to carry out or they'll make you a plate to eat there and you can utilize the chairs and tables they have outside of their store front and inside their store. The food is set up behind the glass buffet style (some items are made to order though so you may experience a small wait time). You tell the owner or his wife what you want and they make your plate. Jodeem is located inside the beltway plaza mall/greenbelt mall. There is shared parking for the restaurant and other patrons of the shops at the mall, but I have had no issues with parking everything I stopped at the mall. I came here to satisfy my Nigerian soup cravings, and they did not disappoint! I have tried their Oha and Ogbono (comes with Okro for the picky Ibos like me) and they did not disappoint! The Oha was not as fresh as what you would find in Nigeria, but it was very much tasty and crunchy and I loved it. The Ogbono was also quite tasty, and I ordered it with goat meat. I have been a customer of Jodeem's for many years and their food and quality has been very consistent. This is important to me when it comes to West African food because some places can be very inconsistent with quality and portion. The owner's family works in the restaurant and every time I visit they are all so warm, welcoming and courteous. I also appreciate that the found a way to remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic when Beltway Plaza Mall was closed for months. I didn't eat at the food at once, took it to go, but I still got sick on the stomach and waited 3 months to try it again. This time I ordered the jollof rice combo and it was soooo good!! Like OMG!! Can back the next day and got the pepper soup and egusi soup with fufu! Both were good as well. The customer service of the meal is always great! He's very friendly and will even let you sample items you are unfamiliar with. The female isn't as friendly, doesn't speak, and will often ignore you. Not sure what that's about. Delicious doesn't even begin to describe the food at Jodeem's. I ordered the stewed chicken,spinach, and rice and ate it all in one sitting. The portion sizes are extremely generous. I normally would have eaten at home but I was so hungry and there were plenty of tables available so I sat and devoured my food. I noticed that that they got very busy so I came at the right time. An actual 3.5 star rating but I'd like to frequent again to see if there is any consistency in service and food. Located inside of the Beltway Plaza Mall, it's a small storefront eatery with a few tables, TV and a few lunch specials to boot. I had my mind set that I wanted some curried goat. It took about ten minutes but I was pleased with the taste, portion size and level of service. I was happy that the serving had more meat than bones as is the case when ordering goat. It could stand to be a tad more tender but it wasn't terrible. I'm not sure what they were doing in the back but while dining in, there was an unidentified pungent odor that was disturbing and thought provoking at the same time. It went away after a few minutes but to smell that while you're eating is a detractor. Parking is shared by other patrons who may frequent other nearby businesses.
