I thought I'd written a review for this venue years ago! What in the hell was i thinking??? Probably to busy laughing!! The shows here are always out of control funny. The nuthouse improve group are always fun to watch. The recent, long awaited, Pauli shore show was outstanding. The best show to date was Basile! He had us bowled over in laughter non-stop. Great atmosphere here. Always a chance to win free tickets to see a show. Easy online purchasing of tickets. Cordial staff. The drinks are good and the food I've had so far is seriously tasty. Love doing date night here. Roll with laughter, grab a couple of cocktails (beer for him) and some apps and our night is started off just right. If you live here or are just in town for a brief visit this spot should be on your to do list. read more

Dead crow Comedy Club understands customer service ! Waitress asked everyone that we were near if it was their first time in the club, and made suggestions on food and drinks. Food is spectacular. I would suggest "As the crow fries" Shoestring fries, salted just right, topped with excellent NC style pulled pork and slaw. Great place to go for entertainment and meal. Went for a comedy competition that was happening while I was in town for a weekend visit. The tickets and drinks were reasonably priced, and the layout seated as many people as possible without feeling too cramped. The venue is in a great location downtown, as there's lots of places in walking distance for dinner before or drinks after. I'd happily return if I'm in Wilmington again! read more

Great place when you need a little something different to do. I don't go to the headlines much because I can't be affordin' $30-40 bucks for tickets each week but they're always offering BOGO deals and giveaways. Instead, I'm cheap and go during the week when it ranges from Free-$3 for a fun night of comedy. Add to that the cheapo nachos that are better than some that you'll pay $10 for in Wilmington and you've got yourself a night. A great way to entertain a lady but still be cheap as hell. read more

Basements give me the creeps. One time when I was 4 or 5, I fell down the cellar steps, and the door slammed behind me without my mother noticing. I was stuck in that old stone dugout pit in total blackness for the next three years (3 minutes), and when I was finally rescued, I was left with a crippling fear of unfinished basements. Also once a bird got stuck in the basement pipes, and we couldn't get it out, and it died. Perhaps it's not a surprise then that I spent a good portion of my early twenties exploring the abandoned wrecks of warehouses that dotted my hometown. Maybe I was unconsciously looking to confront that fear, to get used to that blanket of unnamed panic that descends on my chest in dark, wet, cramped places. Sometimes our brains look to fix us without us even being aware of it. A self-healing system. It applies to our physical wounds, so why not our mental ones? Comedy clubs should only ever be in basements. If the basement is the metaphorical space where our childhood fears are buried - the root causes of our neurotic behaviors, our vanities and hatreds and why sometimes we act like douchebags - then comedy is the act of people going down into the basement to call that shit out. By this logic, all therapists' offices should be in basements too, and I don't necessarily disagree with that conclusion. Dead Crow is a wonderful basement that isn't wet at all. I do also like the tie-in of the dead bird, that fits my narrative. Though it wasn't a crow, it was a swallow. A crow wouldn't have fit in the pipe. On open mic night (Thursdays), there is plenty of cheap alcohol; PBR is 2 dollars, and Mike's Hard Lemonade is 2.50. It's a good dichotomy - PBR makes you look cooler, but Mike's is 8% and gets you drunk faster. So you have to decide pretty quickly what your goals are that night. Generally, I recommend not trying to look cool in Wilmington, it's kind of a waste of time, you know? And the people are this club are going to be way more impressed with you being your drunk self than you being your cool self, cause comedians are not cool people, daddy-o. They are insecure, sensitive, nervous kind of people. They just want to get up and say some stuff in front of you to make you think about something, and hopefully laugh about it. It's like a light-hearted support group for troubled youth, only if some of the youth were also in their forties. So go with the Mike's, dude. Relax a little. Lean over and tell your friend that stand-up comedy is something you've always wanted to try. Just kidding. Please don't talk during the show. They have pretty good food. The dollar tacos on Mondays are really good. The 50 cent wings on Tuesdays are pretty good. The tater tots are like, the most popular thing ever. There are just plates of tater tots everywhere, like the club had just inter-dimensionally crossed with a school cafeteria. See, that totally fits too. Of course, when excavating and ridiculing your childhood psychosis, or even just watching someone else do that, of course you want to eat tater tots. I think they should start offering a chocolate milk cocktail too, and maybe some sort of macaroni and cheese in the shape of the alphabet. I'm serious. I think this is a theme. All the bartenders are incredibly smart and hot. The cocktail waitresses are ninjas. The owners are friendly giants. The local gang of comedians are rag-tag and tumbleweed. The weekend headliners are of a much higher caliber than one would ever expect to see in some small NC beach town. Overall, Wilmington is incredibly lucky to have a place like this - generally you have to be in a population of 300,000 or more to get these kind of bookings. But this is such a magical basement, the word has spread, and so we get big city comics without having to deal with any of the big cities issues - like public transportation or decent traffic signal coordination. read more

Nutt St. is a great room for Comedy, Improv and Stand-up. I tour nationally and it's hands down one of my favorite rooms to perform. The owner is a comic and he treats all the talent, pro or just starting out, like they should be treated. They keep the drinks cold too and of course that's the most important thing to me. read more

Great comedy spot in the heart of downtown! I've been used to the mashed style of seating from my old stomps in NYC but this place was quite different. Nice spacious seating for the two of us, very attentive service, and they have a great $5 gnosh menu. The drinks are extremely reasonably priced and it's an all around great atmosphere. First of all......ta-dah! This is my 300th review! I went to the Dead Crow Comedy Room with a group of ladies who were ready for something fun and different. The space is like a cozy, little cave. I love the gorgeous, old brick. Our group was pretty large, but we were all able to get seats in the same location. We quickly learned that food and drink orders had to be placed at the bar. They featured a beer special and a bartender's choice shot. They also featured Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio, each for an affordable $4.00. Two dollar tacos and two dollar nachos were featured as well. I was pleased to see that the menu had plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. My choice included one black bean taco with cheese and nachos. I imagined $2.00 nachos would be a piddly handful of chips with scanty toppings. Wrong! There was a gracious plenty chips covered with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. The only thing that might have improved it would have been jalapeño slices. And, more cheese. The taco was good, too. After a couple of games that featured some of the guests (our Jeanette was chosen!), we were treated to 4 or 5 comedians. We were to listen for words that matched the ones on our Bingo cards. Well, let me tell you, this is not your grandmother's Bingo! The comedians were edgy, entertaining, and original. After each performance, the MC would call out the words that could appear on our Bingo cards. I didn"t win at Bingo, but with the lovely space, killer service (thanks, Shannon!), talented entertainers, and scrumptious, affordable food and drink, everybody wins at DCCR! I only wish it was called Dead Mosquito Comedy Room. I rather like crows. read more

Easily the best place to visit in downtown Wilmington on a Friday or Saturday. Great date night event too. Other night's events are hit or miss, but always at least entertaining. I go at least 3 times a month. read more

Staff training is in order here. When you pay someone to ask people to not heckle, that person should know what that is. He should pay attention to know when the audience is being engaged by the comedian instead of pouncing on every person who opens their mouth....such as the experience last night. It was very hard to focus on the comedian while having to see the guy bounce around the room ruining everyone's night. No one heckled at all. Not one person was rude in any way, whatsoever. When alerting the management, she agreed he needed to be trained but never apologized and really just acted as though it meant nothing. I cannot in good faith recommend this place until some staff development occurs. I love a good comedy venue and really wish the evening had gone differently and I and others hadn't been made to feel like bad people. There's nothing funny about that. Maybe had the guy been actually watching the show (to know what's going on) instead of chatting with other employees, he'd be better in his role. read more

Got ripped off by this club's owner and etix.com. Apparently there's a glitch in etix's ordering page. It charged me double for 5 tix. The owner of the club said it happens a lot and he'd refund me the money at the club, but etix was keeping the service charge! he seemed sincere and cool. Well, he didn't refund me a dime, even though the show was packed. He kept putting me off and at the end of the night he just shrugged his shoulders and said i'd have to get it refunded through etix, "But don't worry, they always refund within 2 weeks!" in reality, this guy's sleazy. Because of some sensitive circumstances in my group I didn't want to enter into conflict, so we just left and tried to get refund through etix. It's been 6 mo.s and we never got any money back. It seems the owner and etix are in cahoots because they kept talking us in circles saying the other one needs to do yada-yada. We feel totally ripped off and will not go here ever again read more

Went to open mic night (It's free!) and was pleasantly surprised. The place looks so much more open and clean than when it was Firebelly. What really got me in was the $2 Nacho special and, wow, a great little plate of nachos for that price. Our whole bill for a night of drinking and eating was $21, plus the open mic comics got some good laughs in. A great venue downtown for people looking for a fun, cheap night out. Looking forward to seeing some of the bigger comics coming up (not free!). read more

Nutt St is the premier comedy club for eastern NC, and for the Southeast in general. This place is located in the basement of the soapbox and has the vibe of hanging out at your buddy's rec room instead of hanging out in a place of business. The beer is always cold and the owner of Nutt St can usually be found behind the bar slinging drinks. Wed is the free improv show and thurs is the free open mic night. The club has nationally touring comedians in on the weekends. If you're looking for a laid back chill place to hang out, have a few beers and laugh your tail off then you need to look no further. We had a wonderful time. I ordered a hamburger with ghost pepper jack cheeses , and bacon ....wow it was hot. So I asked if they could make me another and the brought me one with regular cheese. This was a great and super affordable night out on the town!! The acts were hilarious and down to earth and the service was quick. We didn't get a chance to have any of the snacks but were disappointed that we ate beforehand because they all looked outstanding!! Definitely recommend this place. Dead Crow is the place to be on a Friday night! I've never been disappointed. Decent drink menu. Awesome small plate appetizers. Great staff. The best part are the prices. Extremely reasonable for the entertainment and the quality of experience you get here. They also send you text notifications when they are doing raffles for free tickets to shows and upcoming events. For Wilmington being such a low budget entertainment city, they bring in some pretty quality comedians. Awesome place. read more

I really enjoy spending my week nights and weekends performing at the Dead Crow. Since its inception, the Dead Crow is a comedy room with an energy and atmosphere like no other. From the open mic on Thursday nights featuring 30-40 comics to the fast paced-frenetic improv night the Dead Crow offers entertainment for next to nothing. I have been here twice, and an attempted third time. The last attempt, we tried to go on a night that was supposed to be comedian confessions, or something like that, but the doors were locked and no one was there. We went on the right night because I checked the calender, but the show must have been cancelled. Kind of sucked for us because we traveled almost two hours to attend the show, but we enjoyed our night in Wilmington none the less. The times I did go, most of the comedians were mildly entertaining. It's a great place to try if you are not into dance clubs and like something that is laid back and entertaining at the same time. I have been to comedy clubs who have booked funnier comedians; however, I'm not going to say it is always the club's fault on how the performances go. I'm sure there are nights that have really good comedians. Despite the last let down, I would try this comedy club out again. I can't remember the price to enter, but I am sure it's the same as most comedy clubs, between $10-15 per person. read more

My friend invited me to the Dead Crow after she performed at Open Mic Night last week. I obliged and drove from Jacksonville after work to try it out. Didn't try the food but everyone else seemed to like it. It felt chill and laid-back so I proceeded to buy some drinks for me and my friends. I did my set and kept drinking, all the time tipping exceedingly . Now when I walked up to the bar for another drink the bartender promptly has a glass of ice water ready and sits it on the bar. I took the hint without incident, as I know the danger of over serving and in hindsight I appreciate that, but I declined the water. No sooner did I decline the water one of the staff said "Then you have to go" so again without incident I told my friends goodbye and left. I had maybe gotten 5 feet from the top step and someone comes up the stairs and says "You're not allowed back" whether he meant for the night or forever us irrelevant because I'll never go back. I understand if I was falling over everybody, being obnoxious, or otherwise but I wasn't I was intoxicated at a place that had $3 Fireball shots. Then on top of all that for the guy to come up the stairs. I can't say that anything was great because of the chain of events that followed after me declining water. It actually only made me a little more critical. read more
