Deals & Steals is a store in Northampton that is a cross between Whole Foods and Ocean State Job Lot. Here you'll find all kinds of odds and ends. There's all sorts of gluten free snacks and dry ingredients, that cost significantly more at other retailers. There's a whole section of honey, and it's a pretty nice variety, with a good amount of it being local. They have several kinds of olive oil, plenty of teas and endless other kitchen staples. They also have clothes and shoes. It's great browsing through this store, and finding something new or something you love at a great deal. They always have security at the door who don't allow any large bags inside. There is no restroom in the store. They should really look into providing customers with a restroom, so they don't have to leave to look for one elsewhere. I absolutely love North Hampton for a variety of reasons but Deals & Steals is definitely one of those reasons. I always find myself stocking up on vegan items that would normally cost a small fortune at whole foods. My dad likes to refer to this place as "Deal or no Deal" mainly because you either find fantastic deals, or you simply don't. There actually are quite a number of items that actually are just regular priced items, but look for those deals! Tip, if you get 3, $1.99 priced items, it will total to just $5 at the register. read more

[SNL Stephan voice] Northampton's hottest store is... Deals and Steals. This place has everything... Honest hand sanitizer, fair-trade coffee beans, organic cereal, Birkenstocks, & tank tops for $2. Seriously though, There is definitely something for everyone, every budget, and every stomach. On this last visit, I picked up 3 bags of Kettlecorn (Buy 1 get 2 free!), a WHOLE CASE of squeeze-pouch type Happy Tots fruit for $2 (!! About 16 pouches), whole leaf English Breakfast pyramid sachet tea (3 boxes for $5), sparkling lemonade for $0.99, and handcrafted marshmallows for $1. Some of the shoes for sale are not much less than what you could find at a Famous Footwear or DSW. However, I did spy a clearance section in the back, and a lucky shopper may find a pair of Sketchers for $5-10. Only thing that is truly missing is kids clothes and shoes. For the best bargains, go towards the back of the store, close to the window. They're on the floor, you will see a pile of boxes and crates. This is the super clearance section, where all sorts of organic snacks, Dry Goods, mixes, and microwavable meals are available for just under a few bucks. Beware though, because most of these are already or close to the Best Buy date. You can still find things that are good within the month though. Parking is available on the street or in the nearby lot. I hope to come back when I'm in the area again! read more

Wow! This place is nuts. You can buy nuts here, by the way. And clothing. And groceries. And hand sanitizer. And shoes. And anything that a college student might want or need (since Northampton is a college town). This is another store that I can get lost in for quite a long time and do some serious damage. Next time, I'll be more prepared and go when I want to do a big load of shopping. read more

How about dirt cheap crackers and granola bars and salsa, and breakfast cereal and flatbread snacks and salad dressing and everything under the sun for pennies on the dollar? And for a bonus, how about plopping this dream store into the most out there place you can find, where people watching has been taken to the tenth power? This awesome store is right in the center of Northampton -its a real eclectic melting pot of overstocks, short dates, nuts and granola and tree bark stuff. It's freaking awesome if you ask me. A critical part of our routine shopping. The 5/$1 counter is often full of staples and the irregularity of the stock adds the fun back in the bargain hunt. All organic stuff at prices you won't see anywhere else (for organic. If you're willing to buy standard items, you can get cheaper TP elsewhere, for example.) This is a deep discount bargain food store, so Caveat Emptor applies: check seals, be flexible, and go in with a fixed budget or list, otherwise you'll buy the store. read more

Northampton is a real college town. With Smith College and Amherst close by, this is kind of place where starving students can find all sorts of deals and then some. First off they used to have 2 separate locations, one for foodstuffs and another for clothing and shoes. They have now put everything together in one spot and while that may make traditional shoppers a little confused, for everyone else, who cares? A bargain is a bargain. It's kind of like TJ Maxx, where it can be hit or miss. One day you may score the perfect pair of shoes along with organic toiletries, another day you' won't find anything you like. I'm a huge fan of Weleda organic products for hair and body. Since it's made in Germany and from the same facility as products-to-the-stars, the uber expensive Dr. Hauschka brand, I was really surprised to see Weleda's Skin Food face cream here for $9.99. Normally at Whole Foods, it's never below $18.99. Those are the kind of deals you'll see here but you have to know what you're looking for. read more

Pretty damn astonishing: I have no idea how they keep their prices for organic-friendly food as low as they do, but it's not that they're better than the other organic outlets in the area, they beat a lot of supermarkets on price! Not a lot by way of perishables, but even so ... and there are some bargains spectacular beyond normal. (How about GALLON sized cans of organic tomato and basil pasta sauce for ... wait for it ... $1.99? I'd pay at least twice that for a PINT of name brand sauce at a supermarket!) They've got a surprisingly wide selection for the size of the place, so you just might find yourself splitting your grocery budget between here and a market with perishables, and you'll save doing so. read more

This place has some of the healthiest dry goods available at the lowest prices. I have Celiac disease and their plethora of gluten free options is quite expansive. On top of all of that they customer service and friendliness is top notch. Kindness abounds. Whenever I have a reason to go to Northampton I make time for a stop here. *The reason most items are discounted is because they are near expiration but the quality is fine. read more

First time I went here, the cashier seemed to forget to put one of my purchased items in my bag. The second time, the cashier forgot to apply a deal that they were having, so I ended uo getting charged much more than I should've. I've been here twice and got ripped off twice. read more

I have travelled from Boston to Northampton just to shop at Deals & Steals. You never know what you're going to get but there will be something there that you'll be excited about. I've gotten boxes of protein bars, organic soy milk, organic and free-trade chocolate and cereals, soups, gluten-free baked goods and free-trade coffee amongst other things. And it's SO cheap! THIS. Is WHY. We EAT in this house on my budget!! We have a few crazy restricted diets in our house, and we find tons of gluten/dairy free staples, and tons of organic, healthy snacks that are only gently post-dated. (I can assure you the dates mean nothing on dry foods... I actually baked a cake using one of the cake mixes that was bought out of date and sat in my pantry for another year, and it was very yummy still). There isn't much in the way of refrigerated stuff and you get what you get and you don't get upset here (don't expect to find the same things each time), but it's always a load of fun to see what they have in store, and also to ring stuff up and get excited about the very low totals. They usually give you boxes or sturdy bags as well to take everything out, which is very helpful. One of my favorite things about this place (other than the 3 for the price of 1 chips) is the ridiculously low-priced items like soup, gourmet spaghetti sauces (Rao's was on sale for awhile for $3 each, which is a bargain for them), individual drinks for packing in lunches and on trips (all-natural fruit smoothie boxes for 30 cents each anyone? tazo tea bottles, .50 each?) and you can often find post-dated gluten free items for 99 cents each. I don't want to share the things I've been stocking up on lately because I'm jealously guarding my secret stashes! But you won't be disappointed. There are a lot of reasonably priced personal care and supplements as well that are not so deeply discounted, but definitely cheaper than normal. Keep in mind some things are priced normally here. I don't think they are jacked up like some say... just not discounted. I'm sure they make enough here selling post-dated, probably discarded or closed-out items at all, to not need to jack up their prices on other things. Another reason I love this place is that I often buy donations for various things like school fundraisers, and this is a great place to buy very cheap stuff by the case that helps a lot. I used to buy seaweed snacks here for cases of 12 for about $5 each, and juice boxes etc for the afterschool program at school. A small thing for me, but much appreciated and when you're on a budget, it's not easy to afford to be generous unless you have connections like this! read more

Worth a trip from anywhere. Lots of things gluten free at a great price...a celiac's dream shopping experience.

If you're the type of person who wanders around the co-op (or Whole Foods, for that matter) and sees fair trade instant cocoa mix or old-school poppy seed filling or envelopes full of pre-mixed Indian spices to dump on your sauteed okra, and thinks to themselves, "Oh, that seems like a fun and convenient item. But it's 5.99/11.99/totally overpriced!" then you should really come here. It's a grab bag of cheap (maybe expired - check if you care) high-end, organic and specialty pantry items. But while you're poking around, you might pick up a bargain on things you use regularly - cereal, soup stocks, pasta, soy milk, canned goods, Bob's Red Mill grains. And if the strange and wonderful thing you took a risk on is too sweet or if you never seem to get around to making hamantaschen, no big deal - most items are priced at around 1.99. read more

This is a wonderful little discount market. I've been coming here for years. They carry mostly natural and organic products. You can get great deals on groceries and health & beauty products. My mom stocked up on rice paper wonton wrappers, spices & organic soap. Definitely worth a browse, if you're in the area. read more

Preposterous discounts on high-end edible goods and household items... tons of selection and never the same array twice... Deals & Steals is like hitting up every outlet between Tom's of Maine to Berkshire Mountain Bakery in one fell swoop... Until quite recently, I was a great fan of D&S. There are low prices and interesting and usually healthy stuff. Then, they blocked access to their public bathroom as they are using that hallway as storage. No biggie but...what about customer service, guys? One of the best things D&S had was the Gluten Free aisle. It was easy to find tried and true brands and get exposure to new, tasty gluten free items. When you have two kids with gluten issues, this was a godsend, especially if they were shopping with me. Recently, system changed and the gluten free items are crammed in with the non gluten free items. WT*? Again,,,what about customer service, guys? Bring back the GF Aisle, Puleeeze? read more

They're a surplus organic and ethnic foods grocer. Some cans and boxes are dented, and other products are months past sell-by. In extreme cases, like with their $1.99 Mayorga coffee special, items are as much as two years past sell by.. Don't expect a steady set of food items, brands, or provenances. Prices seem to vary based upon how old the products are, and whether or not their warehouse is jammed with the product. Prices seem a bit random, and canned goods are rarely at deep discount.. Their chips, however, are famously mix 'n match, buy one and get two free. That's truly a heck of a deal. They now carry day old People's Bakery breads at half-off and have added the ability to process EBT. I adore this store. Cheap organic/ natural/ ethnic pantry staples. You can't really go there with a specific shopping list in mind as the selection is very random, but if you go in with an open mind and like to stock up on things, it's really wonderful. The best deal there is the buy one get 2 free offer on chips- even Terra chips! I often can't justify buying 3 bags of chips at once, though. read more

Awesome place with endless deals as the name clearly states! The concept here is super savings and healthy lifestyle. If you don't mind a slightly damaged box, a soon to be expired item or an harmlessly expired item (like crackers), then you'll be in heaven. They recently expanded the store, so clearly it's a hit with people from all over the area. I always leave here with at least one box packed with goodies. People might justify purchasing food here by telling themselves that food is generally good past its stated expiration date. That is undoubtedly true, but Deals and Steals stocks food that is not only expired, but just plain nasty. I've been here several times, hoping to find something good, and every time I've been frankly shocked that it's even legal to sell the food they have. It certainly can't be safe. We're talking food that has been expired for months. Very cheap food that has been expired for months, yes, but that hardly explains the utter depths of nastiness plumbed in this store. It must be seen to be believed, but it isn't worth your time seeing it unless you are some sort of spoiled food voyeur. Check the sell-by dates and cringe. Admittedly, perhaps one in fifteen items for sale here is still plausibly edible, although even food that appears edible here often comes with stomachaches. This place used to be my jam when I lived in Northampton! A tiny little store that has split into two locations carrying all the weird organic and foreign foods and dry goods that are damaged or overstocked from the hippie dippy stores in the area mean that deals n steals always has a rotating selection of awesome, interesting and sometimes straight up weird stuff to eat, wear, or wash with. I write quite a few restaurant and travel reviews, but this is the first negative review I've written. I bought two dark chocolate bars late last week for $1.99 each. Opened the first one at home and found a flaky discolored, previously melted and an inedible mess. Believe me, if my wife wouldn't eat this chocolate bar, it looked bad. The 2nd one turned out to be okay. Today, I brought back the opened, uneaten one with the receipt for a refund explaining what a mess it was. I was told I could get another one or a store credit, which I did not want. The employee told me it looked like I had eaten some even though she hadn't opened the package, calling my integrity into question. I'm 70 years old and this is just about the worst customer experience I've ever had. It was totally unnecessary and unexpected. I did get a bit angry for which I am sorry, but there is NO EXCUSE for such a return policy that questions the honesty of a customer. I haven't gone to another retail store or business in decades where there was no concern for the problem I presented. Usually, the only question is "Is there anything wrong with the product?" Deals and Steals would do well to realize that a customer bringing a product back is every bit as important as one buying something. I certainly can't imagine going back and I won't recommend the store to anyone. Update: Almost immediately after posting this review, I received a message from one of the owners of Deals and Steals apologizing for what had happened. After a very nice phone conversation with Ivy, I was very impressed. She apologized again and didn't make any excuses. I feel much better about returning to the store in the future because of the quick and positive follow-up by Deals and Steals. Good for organic and natural items that are close to expiring or past expiration or slightly damaged. The place is small, and when crowded can be extremely aggravating. The prices are generally good, but are still high on some items. I find cereals and baking supplies are a good deal. So are Bottled teas, baby food, and drinks. I mean if you're going to buy something close to or past expiring it should be a hell of a deal, but some of it is really not. Staff is not the friendliest bunch. More like a 3.5 star place if there was one. read more

I am disable in a wheel chair I loved going to your store when it was all at pleasant st. the store those was difficult to get into the was always boxes blocking the handicap entrance, i would have to move boxes to get most times i would never complain about. i would spend $20 or $50 when i would go there. but on day a woman that work at the store started yelling at me because i came when the store was having deliveries that day and I was a inconvence she said that she was tired people like me and women with baby carriages, the way she yelled at in the middle of store I felt so humiliated I put what i was going to buy and rolled out the store i have not been back. read more

Sure, I got stale chocolate here once - but otherwise, this is my go-to place for literally EVERYTHING. Good quality, good service, amazing selection! The loose leaf tea is incredible. Great outlet store for health food items. It used to be only health food items but then they started carrying "gourmet" food items too, which makes it more interesting to shop there but not necessarily better. Miserable staff, worst customer service in the valley. From the owner down to the cashier, they couldn't care less if you shop there.

A surplus outlet for the granola crowd. Chaotic interior, but with a wide array of food inside. Not everything is cheap, but no item I noticed cost more than it would in a health food store, and many things are still cheaper than catching a sale at a mainstream grocer. Perhaps their best values are the fifty cent soft drinks and twenty-five cent nutrition bars. Great for a snack when one can't justify the calories or money involved in a cafe item. read more
