If you live or work downtown, State Street is accessible. Produce and other staples are available and the wine & beer selection is vast. But often, the folks working at the check out counter are either annoyed or they blatantly ignore you. I went in recently on my lunch break and the woman working could not be bothered to tally up my items since the conversation with her co worker was far more important. Very rude. This store is perfect for a quick, local trip. They've got enough of moist things to make a trip worthwhile, plus they're local. That's a major bonus. They also stock a ton of local products to support people in the pioneer valley. The one downside? The prices are high. Of course you'd expect this since it's a small, local grocer, but it's seriously the only thing I wish I could change. (Also, check out the wine shop that's connected and owned by the same owner. I grew up in Northampton this was our family store since 1967. I enjoy every time I enter the store. There are so many wonderful selections from prepared foods to the produce area that still looks so organized and fresh. Bakery and of course the spirits! The main section of State Street is full of narrow aisles stuffed with chromatically diverse specialty box foods, staff who aren't really sure where anything is and a fair selection of tea. Where this place really stands out is its deli - a sandwich half from here will keep a full grown lumberjack sated for days and surrounding their lunch counter are more cheeses than you could shake an ak-mak at. Be careful to eyeball how each preparer is going about his trade... if you time it right you can get the worker who is in an Arthur Dent head-space of meal crafting and be the envy of all you brought along to try out their gut busting lunch goods. They don't sell alcohol on the North side but you can grab your hooch right next door at State Street Wine & Spirits. read more

What an awesome little shop in Northampton! We came here looking for some road trip snacks and a few drinks to enjoy on a warm night. We found some unique drinks (concord grape kombucha and a raspberrry tea with lemonade) and found it hard to choose between their incredible selection of snacks. We settled on some chocolate and a couple bags of chips. I was really impressed with the amount of food they have available in this little shop. There's something for everyone here! read more

I've been here for two things, a bottle of whiskey to give as a holiday gift, and many, many sandwiches. First, the staff is very knowledgable and helped me get a great bottle of whiskey for B at the holidays (to match the glassware set I also got him, obviously). I wanted to spend a little bit more than he would on himself, but without getting something to crazy -- Glenfiddich 12 it was. He loved it. Second, the deli. Oh my, the options. It's very basic (ex: no prosciutto), but they do it very well and also have a ton of prepared food, though I've never had any of it. They have a list of sandwiches, but you can add and subtract and make your own. They even do a half sandwich. The homemade borsin cheese spread is delicious, has a slight kick. The pickle on the side is a great touch and much appreciated. They are perfect to grab and take back to the other. Beware of the brownies though, too delicious and large. read more

Today I grabbed a greek salad because that is my favorite kind of salad. I got it back to work and opened it up - holy cow what a beautiful salad and packed full for a very reasonable price. Mad props right off the bat for not selling cigarettes. State Street stopped peddling smokes back in the 90's, I think. I was a smoker at the time (a very committed smoker at that) and, yes, I was incredibly annoyed when they suddenly stopped having butts. I remember being completely dismayed that I was going to have to huff it all the way over, through the police station lot , the People's Institute lot AND the Hotel Northampton lot, up to Grampy's just to get my friggin' smokes... BUT, I was also, somewhere in the back of the haze of my addiction, appreciative that they were taking a stand. A very small part of me, a teensy tiny voice in the back of my head, said, "Hey, that's pretty cool... they're going to risk losing money just so they can't enable people to kill themselves. How humanitarian. Now where the f was that last smoke I had in my pack?" So, State St is NOT the place to go when you're having a nic-fit... unless you want to overcome it with a pint of Bart's ice cream or some locally baked goodies. This little grocery store manages to stock up most of the essentials you randomly run out of at home (tampons, tp, dog food) and a lot of gourmet-type foods. The deli makes a PHENOMENAL sandwich - the Nantucket Stroller - which is part of my "must haves" list when I visit the area. I found this little shop while perusing the neighborhoods of Northampton, one of my favorite places to visit. I wanted to find somewhere that had local groceries, and prepared foods, and what I found was so much more!! It was quiet and clean, with friendly staff that greeted me upon entering. Their prepared salads and sandwiches looked dee-lish, but I soon got distracted when I found the liquor store on the other side! I crossed over to the boozy aisles, and was promptly offered help from a young guy. He showed me through some of his favorite beers in the fridges, and pointed out some really popular locals brews as well. I took his recommendations and got 4 bomber bottles for just about $20. Good place to pick up almost anything you need. Its within walking distance so it can satisfy a craving for chips, dessert or beer. I've lived here for three years and yet never really got into this place until this week. I always had the impression it was dirty and filled with wilted, expensive fruit. Recently, I was very sick and just couldn't make the drive to the Co-op, so I ended up here for a desperate sandwich. My experience was fantastic and now I've been back multiple times. The staff at the counter are knowledgeable, fast and make great sandwiches that don't skimp on ingredients. As I waited, I also discovered this store has a great little selection. They have good pre-made items, wonderful cheese selection (with homemade mozzarella) and good selection of local goods. They also have those wonderful big pasta noodles. The deli is excellent. You can get a decent-sized sandwich for CHEAP. Good salads as well. State Street is a convenient place to shop for basic necessities if you live locally and don't want to make the trek to Big Y or Stop and Shop. State Street Wine and Spirits was my go-to wine shop. With a free wine tasting of a red and a white every Friday afternoon from 4-6, what's not to like? The staff was incredibly helpful and always willing to chat about wine and the prices were unbelievable. They have monthly wine specials that are a great way to try a new wine without worrying about the price. I didn't know how good I had it. These people loved wine and I loved these people. In regards to the other side, the "Fruit Store," I spent a lot less time here, and frankly it seems to be staffed by discontented high-schoolers. But I won't hold that against them, after all I was a discontented high-schooler who needed a job once. The dry-goods food has a tendency to be dusty, but they carry a wide array of fruit and in a pinch this was my go-to pick up a half-gallon of milk on the way home spot. read more

Prices were randomly marked sometimes on shelf, sometimes tagged on items -- so you have to hunt a little. Imported and specialty item prices were slightly high (as they are with small, independent markets), but not crazy high. And there were items I have never seen anywhere else -- olive spreads from Italy (with no garlic or onion, which is impossibly rare for those of us with allium allergies, yet so tasty). Great thin, crispy oatmeal cookies -- the ginger ones were so good when we snuck one from our bag while shopping that we went back to get two more packages of them for gifting. Some very good baked goods at checkout counter, made locally. Excellent, odd beverages and cane sugar or maple syrup sodas. Across the street from Hungry Ghost bakery, so stop in there for their great sourdough bread to eat with your deli treats, fresh fruits and wine from State Street. I wish I had discovered this deli sooner since it's so close to campus. Their sandwiches are fresh, customizable, and very filling. Plus, at $5, I'd say it's one of the best values for lunch in downtown Northampton. The pickle on the side is a sweet bonus! This is one of my favorite deli shops! I love their egg salad sandwiches and get one every time I visit Northampton. The salads are always fresh. The soups are great. DO NOT BRING YOUR BUSINESS TO THIS STORE. I have been a loyal customer since I've moved to Northampton in August. I've spent hundreds of dollars on groceries and alcohol there and was never given a problem with my out of state license. The manager had checked my id on several occasions, accepting secondary id as sufficient proof that my out of state license is not a fake while also working with my roommate and I to pick out different liquors. Today, I was told I need something else with my birthday on it. You can imagine that I was shocked that after seven months of business, I was told that they wouldn't sell to me. I am extremely offended by the treatment they gave to a loyal customer. I highly promote supporting local businesses. Unfortunately in this case, I'll just take my business to Big Y. read more

OK, I've been in here many, many times. The Fruit Store side cashiers are usually rude, hardly speak, grab the money without a please or thank you. One time too many yesterday - the kid mumbled something about the total, which I had to read on the register instead, did not say please and/or thank you...so rude. The other cashier, a young woman, also seemed too busy to be bothered, but then went out of her way apologize.
