I was actually shocked to learn that he has patients from Europe and Asia! I thought it was a pain to travel to Illinois, but I'll take that any day over traveling from China! LOL Everyone is entitled to their own opinion(s) and experience(s), but I think that verified reviews and photos to back up one's claims, along with actual in-person and virtual consultations, are the best bet for anyone interested in moving forward with this type of complex surgery to proceed. Not worth the one-star rating. After previous botched rhinoplasties, my wife and I were referred to Dr. Dean Toriumi in Chicago by an ENT specialist as a top expert for complex revision cases. Dr. Toriumi initially seemed professional and indicated he could address her nasal valve collapse, reconstruction needs, and Empty Nose Syndrome once we got through the cold winter. However, his bedside manner quickly turned condescending. He appeared more focused on other patients than our concerns. Subsequent virtual follow-ups in December 2024 and February 2025 were even more disappointing. He was dismissive of my wife's symptoms, interrupted her, and ultimately refused to proceed with care. During the final call, he abruptly ended the conversation when asked about next steps. We also requested a copy of his notes from our initial in-person visit. None existed. The document we received contained zero information about or visit and his examination. We plan to file formal complaints with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and related State Licensing and health authorities. Based on our direct experience, I recommend patients seek multiple professional opinions and proceed with caution before choosing Dr. Toriumi for revision rhinoplasty or other cosmetic procedures. THIS MAN IS A CROOK! He will tell you that you have something he needs to fix (such as a deviated septum, spur, etc) so he can bill insurance and get money for himself. I had four consults after him and each doctor told me the same thing- that there was nothing wrong. I went to his office for a consult on my nose (should've read reviews first) and paid the consult fee and that was that. Dean Toriumi billed my insurance 3 MONTHS later saying that I had an endoscope done in his office. I had no such thing done- solely a consult where he showed me on the computer what my nose "would look like" if he performed surgery. I also know people that have used him and they are by far the worst noses I've ever seen- they look like blocks and are very wide on the face - he does not listen to what the patient asks. I had an eye procedure (upper blepharoplasty) with injected fat for the lower area and it looks great. Dr. Toriumi clearly explained the procedure to me so there were no surprises and the results get better every day! I have been getting compliments on looking great. My face still looks like me, just very well rested and I love the improvement, especially with my eye make-up. I no longer have the extra folds that use to eliminate any evidence of an eye lid or eye shadow. I saw Dr. Dean Toriumi to do my rhinoplasty. I had nothing physically wrong except wanted a better aesthetic: thinner, more feminine looking appearance of the nose. Do not go unless you have had a botched previous nose job and you just want correction as his "style" leans toward a very wide, masculine-looking nose. In other words, the exact OPPOSITE of what I wanted! I was quite clear in the changes I was seeking in terms of a natural, but a bit smaller overall shape. Years later, I hate my "new" nose and this cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Further, Dr. Toriumi has very a poor chair side manner-- he doesn't listen, in fact, uses very few words. He had no suggestions except to "eat less salt". Oh, he inserted a large piece of cartilage behind my ear in my scalp just in case I "ever broke my nose again". I never broke my nose in the first place! I really think he's better to correct severe physical nose deformities, not for a better aesthetic. read more

I had surgery with him 12 years ago, and his excuse for leaving me with a nose that was *nothing* like I asked for was that "it would help me breathe better" (to make the the tip wide) and "it would age better with time" (to project out the tip with a cartilage graft). Well, both things turned out to be false. My breathing started to suffer because the huge grafts he put in my tip started to block my airway after a few years. These are called lateral crural struts (made out of cartilage in my septum), and I've felt them sitting in my nose like a hard piece of cardboard for 12 years (google it - you'll see why they'd be uncomfortable) They are mostly used for revision surgery or reconstruction - NOT first-time rhinoplasty (which is what I went in for). He made my tip too projected by using a "columellar strut" graft, and it sticks out like pinnochio, especially as I've aged and my other features don't project like this. Kissing someone with a hard piece of cartilage in my nose has been awkward (my nose can't be pushed in at all) and the distance between my nose & lip is exaggerated. (To recent patients - your nose will soften by year 2, but the grafts will never soften.) My nostrils were made quite asymmetrical, and even my professional work photo looks like I had one nostril (all amateur photos look this way). In his imaging, he lowered my nostril rims from the side. But in reality, they have only gotten higher - especially with time. So, I look like I am flaring my nostrils all the time. He gave me a large radix graft (even though I asked him NOT to on the surgical bed) which I've hated for 12 years. It was so bad that I now have a visible scar by my eye where I have it removed (SO much better though). For the first 5 years, I could hardly find any doctors to revise this nose at all because Toriumi's methods were so "innovative" that nobody knew how to undo them (now they're simply seen as inappropriate). Now, I can get a revision of one this nose for $20,000+. But, since he has altered the anatomy so drastically, there's no guarantee my revision (mostly the tip problems) will look any better. My nose is quite asymmetrical, which he refused to acknowledge at first. Then, he said he did it deliberately because my mouth does not line up perfectly with the midpoint of my eyes. So, he put my nose on a slant! Naturally, NONE of this was discussed beforehand (the hard tip grafts & slanted nose - all non-consensual despite 3-4 pre-op visits) To make things even worse (and somewhat insane) - when I was seeking a revision, I used to post on rhinoplasty message boards about my situation & how much I hated what he did to my nose. Inevitably, a poster would show up and randomly throw out personal info about me. Toriumi was the ONLY one who knew the info that was shared. Then, as more & more unhappy patients of his congregated online, we actually formed a private message board of 14 people - most of whom went to Calvert, Davis, or Frankel for revisions by now. Before we made our private board, we were posting on a public rhinoplasty message board - and we were relentlessly harassed by an anonymous person who had NO interest in plastic surgery. The only goal of that person was to undermine every post we made about Toriumi (the person ignored posts about other docs) & state how we were delusional or generally harass us in other ways. The moderator of the website got the IP address & it was someone in Massachusetts, possibly hired to do this (I cannot imagine any other motivation). So, that was an insane experience to go through. All I wanted was a SIMPLE reduction in the width of my tip that would've taken any doctor 45 minutes to do (and it could have *easily* been done without the open approach that creates more swelling & trauma - that he insists on doing) There was no need for grafts, from what 10+ different doctors told me in the last 12 years as I searched for a revision. Instead, I got EIGHT grafts carved out of my septum, permanent discomfort from these grafts, a cross-eyed appearance from the abnormally large radix graft (now removed - yay), intermittent breathing problems, and an asymmetrical pinocchio nose - all in a 3 hour surgery. Then, I got harassed online for years. I heard that he now makes people sign a form that they won't talk about him online or post reviews (except for the few positive ones, I guess). The person who referred me to him (whose nose he rebuilt after a bad primary surgery) no longer looks good either. He wanted me to come in like once a month for the whole first year, but he wouldn't listen to any of my concerns. They were just for his own personal knowledge of how his (essentially experimental) surgery turned out. He would just run out of the room after 5 minutes. My mom actually had to come with me and block the door to prevent him from running out when I wanted my problems addressed. But, there's really nothing he can do once the surgery is over. read more

I broke my nose recently and have been looking for a qualified doctor to perform my surgery. Every doctor I have seen has told me it's a very complex surgery. It's been 6 months since I had my rhinoplasty/ septoplasty surgery with Dr. Dean Toriumi. Words can not express how happy I am with the results. I have never had surgery before and was very hesitant to chance anything, especially on my face. However, it came to a point where my breathing and appearance of my nose became very bothersome. September 2014 I decided to start looking into surgeons. I extensively researched all the doctors in the Chicago, NY and LA area (Chicago is home). I researched the surgery I needed, used yelp and other web-based sites to read reviews. I also talked to people I know who have had rhinoplasty as well as spoke directly to other surgeons (I work in the medical industry, specifically surgery). I asked every surgeon I worked with following question "if your wife was to have a rhinoplasty, who would you send her to?" EVERY SINGLE DR. SAID TORIUMI! I still wanted to feel comfortable with my decision, so I scheduled a consultation with 2 doctors . I was able to get my first consult with Dr. Shah and then a few week later with Dr. Toriumi. I immediately felt comfortable with Toriumi from my first consult. He is a brilliant physician. He is soft spoken and really gets down to business. To be candid he is not warm and fuzzy and that's simply because he's busy. He takes the time to address your needs and wants as well as answer all questions. If your more concerend with a bedside manor then results then maybe he is not your guy. But, personally I'd rather have a phenomenal outcome than a great converstation. Dr. Toriumi's craft is constructing the nose to fit your facial features. It's truly an art form in order for it to not look like a typical nose job. He is very meticulous to ensure what he changes is what's best for your face. Everyone I know has responded saying how great and natural my nose looks. It's truly perfect and I can finally breathe. Dr. Toriumi was my surgeon for my rhinoplasty 10 years ago. I was one of his youngest patients at the time. Dr. Toriumi is extremely thorough, professional and is truly a master at his craft. I consulted Dr Dean Toriumi 10 years ago. He was rude, mean, autocratic and seemingly disinterested. He tried to belittle me in front of his pupil. After much hesitation I decided to have surgery with him anyway because I mistook his arrogance for expertise. Following surgery my nose was extremely swollen and ugly. I was in profound shock. He offered no advice to deal with the swelling. The follow up meetings were a sick joke - with his tantrums and barely concealed condescension/disdain. Bullyboy tactics. I spent years avoiding mirrors and photographs. After a minor closed revision from a different surgeon Dr Toriumi's very bulky/clunky tip cartilage was refined down a bit, but the tip continued to drop. A year ago Dr Toriumi finally agreed to revise his own work. It was a nightmare getting him to do it. He spent a year telling me that he was waiting for "permission" to operate when in truth he was deciding by himself if he could be bothered. After this revision of his own work and two more in office needle procedures, the bulky tip is improved a bit. But it's pinched on the dorsum and there is no tip cartilage in one side of my nose. As a result, I can't breathe properly and need to find a new revision surgeon. My ear donor sites are a mess (painful to sleep on and aesthetically worse than pre-op). He has abandoned me, and in an extremely mean and condescending way. I was also the victim of a sadistic assault on the operating table by an agency nurse (in front of numerous staff witnesses who obviously all knew what they witnessed was a criminal assault) but my allegation was ignored by Dr Toriumi, his underlings and the surgical centre. I'm still trying to obtain copies of my records a year after requesting them, and Dr Toriumi and cronies are lying to the Office for Civil Rights about it. I had two surgeries with Dr. Toriumi. I had a collapsed nostril that he was meant to fix with a rib cartilage implant. My nose was over built and I came out of the surgery with a huge swollen nose. There was also a slight bump on the bridge of my nose, something I never had before. My columella aslo completely disappeared. When I confronted him post surgery about the fact that my collapsed nostril was not fixed, he said "Who is going to look at you from down there anyway?" It's been ten years since my surgeries. Some of the grafts in my nose have warped and have left me with some contour deformities. I still have a collapsed nostril, in fact it's worse today than it ever was. I also can not breath from that nostril, it was a birth deformity. It's a very unfortunate disappointing outcome. Here is my story: 18 yrs ago in Europe I was in a bad car accident that collapsed my nose and restricted my breathing. He is a very talented surgeon as well as writer , spec. in medical engineering and science and ..really kind person. My post was truthful, not just a P.R. move. I was a legitimate patient and my post was absolutely honest . "Why would he perform a 7.5 hour surgery on me for free??", you ask. Here's why: 18 years ago I was in a horrible car accident and lost my family. After that I developed PTSD, I had terrible flashbacks, and I was severely depressed. I went to Dr Toeiumi with a collapsing nose and no ability to breath through my nose.. I had seen other surgeons who didn't feel they could manage my case properly. I didn't really like Dr Toriumi. He was arrogant, unfriendly and I never felt were on the same page in what my needs were medically and cosmetically. I figured I didn't need to like him as long as he could take care of the problem. He felt very sure I would be breathing better after surgery. The day after I sent in for a post op and told the Dr. I felt like I had a cold. I didn't have on the day before. He just put me on Allegra and told me it was allergies.( never had them before). Never asked about it again although I did tell him it was no better. A year and a half later my nose is still hard. The tissue has not softened. I am constantly congested and have more problems breathing now than I did before surgery. It has claimed my sleeping ability as well. To add insult, I paid everything upfront and now they are billing me for an additional 1,000.00. I am completely dissatisfied and I may bring suit against him for the problems I'm having now. This surgery cost me a fortune, and I feel I was ripped off. My advice, stay away. He is so full of himself. He could care less about his patients. read more
