I've been eyeing this bar for several weeks now, and the other day, I finally decided it was time to give them a try. I know reservations are probably highly recommended, but we were fortunate to walk in at just the right moment and snag a seat. The seating is cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening. The atmosphere is just my style, an elegant, dark, grown and sexy vibe that really sets the mood. The decor is striking, with thoughtful touches that create an inviting space to unwind. While it leans a bit on the pricier side, the exceptional service more than justifies the cost. Jordan and the team were incredibly knowledgeable about both the drinks and food menu, offering suggestions that perfectly matched our tastes. We tried two standout drinks that I can't recommend enough: the Attractive Nuisance and El Tiburon, (which is an Old Fashioned made with gin). The bartenders here clearly know what they're doing, each drink was crafted with care and precision. We were here to get drinks and apps to kickstart our friend's birthday celebration. Unfortunately, we didn't have a reservation for that evening. Because the last time we were here, we could find a seat easily. So never thought about making a reservation. As we walked in, the place was packed. Lucky we got a table in the corner for an hour. Ambiance: from the outside you'd have no idea that a hidden treasure awaits you up a flight of stairs. The decor was very mysterious, perfectly dimmed, and sexy. They added greenery near the hostess station to create what I would describe as an exotic/jungle vibe. This area also contained a beautiful small bar and a few cozy seatings. Next, the hostess led us to a table inside where the magic of candles, cozy tables, and intimate booths immediately meets your eyes. Did I mention that we sat in most comfy green velvet chairs in our cozy booth? How sexy! Service: our waiter, Jordan, was the best! He provided great service and recommendations. However, shoutout to the rest of the staff because it was truly all hands on deck. Drinks: the bartender is indeed a mixologist! There is no question of the magic he created in a glass. Her drink- I ordered the Attractive Nuisance, an elevated spritz. The drink was perfectly balanced with flavors to include G.H. Mumm Champagne, Avua Prata Cachaca, Cocchi Americano, Saffron, Vanilla. I literally tasted all the flavors in the drink and the liquor ratio was just right. Of course I went with another round, you simply have to try it understand why I did. His drink: El Tiburón-Let's just say that he said that this is now one of his favorite cocktails because it was smooth! Small bites: the kitchen was out of mussels and their famous donuts so we decided to try the Franks en Crute, the sexy adult version of pigs in a blanket lol. Such a delicious treat, well balanced flavors giving both sweet (flaky puff pastry) and savory (well grilled wagyu beef). Definitely recommend. The music was perfect for the evening! The room carries that cool, languid speakeasy air, alive with a pleasant hum that never swells into nuisance, making it ideal for a drink before dinner or after. Having missed opportunities to visit some of the other Death & Co locations, I made sure to visit the one in DC when I had the chance. I feel comfortable referring to it as a "cocktail experience." and a good one. Getting seated is a bit more formal and procedural than I feel is necessary, but once you're beyond that, sit and enjoy. Service and conversation with the staff is both informative and informal. The drinks are pretty special and interesting, with the complex flavors I look for in a well crafted cocktail. I was able to learn the differences between what to expect among all of the other locations, and from what I gathered, this particular Death & Co. is likely to be my favorite, and one to which I look forward to returning. read more

Based on the recommendation of other reviews I made a reservation to have drinks here before meeting friends for a later dinner nearby. Definitely make a reservation unless you are coming early and/or prefer the garden area. If I come back I probably will sit in the garden because I really liked the ambience there, and though it is slightly open to the elements it isn't completely so, so it doesn't have to be perfect weather and it was bright and cheery before the sun set. They have an extensive menu grouped by sets of adjectives but the adjectives didn't really give me the specific info I needed which is "how sweet" and "how strong". So I asked Devon, our delightful server. I mentioned that my tastes are plebian; I like it sweet, only a little tart, and nothing with a whisky or derivative. Devon recommended the waxy simulacrum, saying it was their sweetest drink. It was (to my taste) somewhat sweet and also quite tart. I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it. It was however pretty strong without tasting super strong. My husband loved his hakka old fashioned enough to order two. We also had a cheese plate to tide us over til dinner; it had as much apple and sesame brittle as cheese (not a ton of cheese) but the flavors did work together very well and we enjoyed it. The bill however was pretty steep, what I would consider Las Vegas prices (having recently visited that city and every drink costing what we paid here). To put it in perspective our bill here was higher than our bill at the Michelin star restaurant we dined at that evening. But, if you are a connoisseur of cocktails, I think you would appreciate this place and not mind the bill. They clearly know what they are doing and have offerings that appeal to people with more advanced taste in booze than I have. I don't say this sarcastically, I am well aware I never graduated to the adult leagues and am happiest with a pina colada or a sweet sparkling moscato. So if I return it will be because I am bringing people who are better equipped to appreciate their expertise, and I'll sit in the pretty garden. read more

Death & Co. Washington DC is a nice addition to the D&C brand. I visited family recently in DC, so we checked them out to celebrate a special birthday. Nothing will ever compare to the original NYC location, but DC has some elements of New York that were nice to see. It is a small but comfortable space. The design is warm and intimate and the service was excellent. After visiting the Denver location a couple of times, it was nice to see a smaller, intimate environment that carries on the D&C experience much better. Denver is a lobby bar located in a beautiful boutique hotel. It's a fabulous hotel bar, but not the feel I want from Death & Co. As usual, the cocktails were excellent. I ordered a cognac/scotch cocktail called Fool's Gold (photo#2). There was a lot going on with complements of Amaretto, Cynar (bittersweet artichoke Amaro), apricot liqueur, and mole bitters. It was boozy and delicious. I also tasted Please and Thank You which my cousin ordered. It's a melange of Italian goodness wrapped around bourbon and rum. The bourbon is joined by rum, Cocchi Rosa (Italian rose-hued aperitif) Campari, Averna, and chocolate bitters. It was garnished with a strawberry which was a nice touch. I haven't seen a lot of whiskey/rum combinations, but this worked well with the Amaros and Apertif. D&C DC is worth the effort next time you're in our nations capital. Go check them out. This place is always booked so I went on a weekday and booked a same day reservation. I went solo and sat at the bar. At 8pm the place was pretty quiet and became more lively as the night progressed. This place was worth the wait and the prices of the drinks $17-$20 which is high but not unreasonable. I would definitely recommend going and I'll be back. While at the bar, I made some friends and got some free popcorn which was very tasty. Was able to walk into Death and Co without a reservation on a Saturday around 7pm and left a little disappointed overall. Ive been really looking forward to trying Death and Co and saw nothing but great reviews so I left more than confused about the hype. The service was terrible. We sat for about two hours at the bar and not once did a bartender check in on us, ask if we wanted another drink, or give us water. Felt like we had to chase staff down to be served. The server on staff that night also didn't seem like they really knew the menu and weren't able to describe the cocktails well. I felt like everything I got was totally different than what was described. The menu itself its really nice. I really appreciate cocktail bars that show the glassware and ice and how the drinks are made (shaken etc) and served (up in a coup), etc. All of the drinks have a ton of alcohols listed and the bar has an amazing selection. What the menu is missing is tasting notes. The liquors used are pretty avant guard so it's not obvious what each drink will taste like -- this is where a knowledgeable bartender comes in handy but for me we had terrible service and a not very knowledgeable server so I felt a little in the dark on what to order. I tried two cocktails. One was super unbalanced and a little bitter. The other was basically a fancy margarita. I was expecting so much more innovation but was left with a lot to be desired. I imagine you're coming for drinks, but as wise women say, don't drink on an empty stomach. Death & Co's popcorn and fingerling potatoes are 100% worth your dollars. The popcorn comes out warm and salty, while the fingerling potatoes are smashed, seasoned with a curry blend, and served in a fancy glass with ketchup. I thoroughly enjoyed them both! And yes, the drinks are real good. I had both an alcoholic/ube-based cocktail and non-alcoholic/guava-based cocktail and enjoyed the creativity. My only critique would be to reduce the amount of ice. Yes, it makes for pretty presentation, but mine just spilled on the table as I moved my metal straw, creating some mess. Lastly, I dig the overall vibe both inside and out. The ambiance was nice as we were seated at a nice booth seat and the staff was friendly and came to check on us to see how we were doing. We decided to walk in for one drink before our dinner reservation, so there wasn't room inside, but we were happy to sit at the bar in the garden area outside. I ordered the Da Vinci Daiquiri and my husband went with bartenders choice. My husband really liked his drink - he asked for something stirred and boozy with mezcal and the bartender really delivered. They explained that the standard bartenders choice option that they would've given him wouldn't really match what he asked for, so they offered to give him something he'd really like, but it would be a slight up charge. He was fine with that and was happy he went that route in the end. My daiquiri was decent but I didn't get much mango even though the description made it sound like a slightly spicy mango rum drink. Maybe the jerk bitters overpowered the mango. I would order something else next time. Ambiance was nice and chill and sitting in the garden was perfect on this summer Friday. When we arrived in Blagden Alley we walked in circles for a bit before discovering the door (it's there - keep looking) but eventually found it. Once inside we climbed the stairs and found some warm Christmas decor and were greeted by the most amazing host - Khalil! He told us there was a wait of about 15 minutes but we could hang out up front. While we waited in the heated area Khalil brought us some Prosecco shooters and let us peak inside to see what was on the horizon. When our table was ready we walked in to the bar which had an elevated swanky vibe which was both cozy and warm. Very NYC vibes - IYKYK. The menus were filled with epic drinks and the mixologists were working hard to provide delicious drinks. Bonus - we were there on a Monday which happens to be the day they offer $13 modern classic cocktails so we all decided to order those. I tried the Silver Monk with a little spice which was refreshing with the cucumber but still had a nice (minimal) kick. Others opted for the Old Fashioned and the Negroni which both received stellar reviews. We didn't have any bar bites since we just left dinner but we will indeed be back! I chose to indulge in their non-alcoholic mocktails instead of the traditional cocktails. They have 3-4 options to choose from that are just about as complex as the rest of the menu. Second time visiting and it was just as amazing as the last time. I've gone right at opening both times. It's a low volume which makes it easy to talk. The bartenders and servers have all been incredibly knowledgeable about the cocktails and helpful when trying to make a decision on what to drink. The city mourned when Columbia Room closed. In its place comes a beloved cocktail bar from NYC. The space and feel is similar to Columbia Room- a beautiful outdoor rooftop patio, a classy inside. Service is also similar. The staff at Death & Company were friendly, helpful, and know what they are doing. The drinks are a little different. Both used quality ingredients in very unique drinks. Death & Company's menu is very large and organized around preferences- "light and playful," "boozy and honest," and so on. Both my drinks came from the "Bright and confident" category. Both were a balance of sweet and sour. The "Cherry Bomb Gimlet" was good, but my favorite was the "Daytona Sand." It's like a daquiri and refreshing on a hot summer night. Prices are similar to Columbia Room- $18-$23 per cocktail. I enjoyed my drinks, but not enough to become a regular. Again, they are quality and worth a visit, but I personally preferred Columbia, but maybe that's nostalgia talking. read more

Showed up here for a dating event that did not coordinate at all with the bar, but luckily the host + manager were able to accommodate the people flowing in without reservations by seating us on the outdoor patio. Bartenders were very friendly and did a great job making something off-menu at my request. With all that said, I do have to deduct one star for the price. At this price point I expected more. I think there are cheaper places to go in the city with more innovative cocktails and unique ingredients. While I have not been to their NYC location, I love their books and theit past creations have been a big inspiration for me during my home bartending journey. Came here for the drinks to relive the experience I had in NYC ten years ago. It was a different vibe but I enjoyed it. Loved the sleek decor, although I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Charly and Wes were great-provided great service add recommendations and made awesome drinks. I got the hot sauce committee under the bright and confident category and it was so refreshing. My friends and I stopped by here after dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants in Blagden Alley. This bar opened its doors just last week, and while I was worried they might still be experiencing some of the issues that come with being newly opened, I'm happy to report that we had a positive experience. They checked our IDs at the door and then directed us up the stairs to the host stand. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but there is no time limit on reservations, so this is a really great spot to catch up with friends. It's dimly lit and nicely decorated, and the back room feels pretty intimate, so it's also a great spot for a date. While we stopped by for drinks, the bar also offers a small menu of bar snacks and a couple of other larger plates. I plan to come back to try the food, as the fried chicken with spicy honey sounded pretty appetizing. The drink menu is extensive, and ranges from light, fruity drinks to more boozy options. They also have 3 mocktails options, so a little bit of something for everybody. While I don't recall the names of all of the drinks we had, the Hot Sauce Committee was surprisingly good! If you like a spicy drink, this is the one for you. I also had their equivalent of an old fashioned, which I enjoyed as well. The prices are about what you'd expect from a bar that originally started in NYC, but at least the drinks are original, inventive, and well-crafted. Starting with the good; service was AMAZING. We sat at the bar; Charlie was our bartender and went out of his way to chat with us, tell us about the drinks (the menu is extensive!) and answer our questions. I would consider coming back just because the service was so good. We dropped by around 6pm on a Friday, and were on a text waitlist for about 45 minutes before we got in. We were seated inside upstairs, and I really like the decor and vibe. I really wanted to love the drinks, but all of them fell a little flat for me. The Golden Hour Fizz had notes of papaya and carrot, but only the carrot really came through. This drink had seltzer in it, and that kind of flattened out all the other flavors. Similarly for the Studebaker, the banana cream float on top had perfect texture, but almost no banana flavor. The Coconut Jam was the most interesting one-- think of it like a green apple, horseradish piña colada. While I didn't love horseradish in it for my own taste, I recognize that this is a really unique and well balanced drink, so I'd probably recommend this one of the three. read more

Location is great, they kept some of the Columbia room feel, and have a good number of booths inside, a long bar (although seats are pretty much on top of each other - tough getting in and out with the big chairs), and a nice outdoor space. Overall loved the drinks. Some very fun and interesting cocktails. Lots of options. Everything I tried was well balanced and diluted properly with some really cool flavors. Hot sauce committee and coconut jam were highlights for me. The downside of our experience was the service (it was the first week so expected they're still figuring stuff out) which was slow with multiple incorrect drinks being served, as well as the food, which works for small bar snacks but it's really isn't great quality especially at the prices (e.g. $10 bowl of popcorn, $12 nuts, $22 for fried chicken that was on par with frozen store strips). Overall had a great time and once they settle in/it becomes easier to walk in, will be back to tackle more of the menu. Lucked out with a reservation this time around. read more

I love the Death & Co. brand, I have nearly all of their books, and I deeply respect their overall work in the industry. That said, DC Death and Co was a huge letdown. The interior of the space is cute but didn't feel intimate and vibey as expected from D&C. It could have been any generic trendy cocktail bar. Despite having a reservation, we were seated allllll the way back in the far corner by the bathrooms, kitchen, and speakers. For what D&C promises, I don't think they should have any tables in this corner to begin with. We were eventually able to move one table over, but the design of the space felt off. They were also blasting pop Christmas music, like the Jonas Brothers, and the tunes really didn't fit the mood. Our server was kind but wasn't the overly knowledgeable, passionate enthusiast promised by the brand. She seemed pretty unhappy to be there. In the future, we'll try to get seated at the bar for the full experience. Our first round of cocktails were great. I got the Pan American Blues, and my wife loved her Riot Act. Second round, however, disappointed both of us. The Afterglow was just about the opposite of my taste despite trying to ask for suggestions based on my likes and dislikes from the server. Death & Co. DC is not New York. I wasn't expecting a clone, but rather a riff on the good vibes and sophisticated drinks, and I didn't feel that at all. It saddens me to say D&C DC isn't there yet. I'm willing to give it another chance on my next trip to Blagden Alley, but for now, I'll stick to studying my Cocktail Codex at home. read more

I've been to Death & Co twice and am not really digging it. The first time was soon after it opened and I sat at the bar and had a cocktail. They were out of what I had wanted for food. Cocktail was fine but I didn't love it. Returning roughly a year later, I had the same experience. Cocktails were fine but we didn't love. I only drank half of a $29 drink and the server didn't even inquire about it, so they had to know. We found the drinks bland and bit under-nuanced. Vibes are also off. I was expecting something special and maybe along the lines of a PDT experience, but it feels like just another DC bar. The one bright spot was the service, both times. Everyone from the hosts to the servers and even the barbacks/bussers are friendly and welcoming. Maybe I was too excited for Death & Co, given it's reputation, but it's just not giving. read more

Chill place that wasn't too crowded. Their drinks were unique but also will satisfy your traditional roots. Dark fancy bars like this normally live and die by the correct use of bitters, and they nailed it read more

Nice location, clean restrooms, great service. Would return for dinner in the future. Had cocktails only.
