(This is my first review in my life so the fact that my visit with her prompted me to finally write this proves how terrible my experience was with her.) Worst attitude of all the doctors I have seen in my life (and I have seen many doctors). Very short with you. Rude, know it all vibe, and no empathy toward my concerns. I felt like a kid the way she talked to me like she knew everything and my concerns were invalid. I asked questions and she'd flippantly respond (bordering implying I was delusional). I was stunned. I went to Dr Tennen simply because her office is close to my home, and I am glad I did. The office is brand new and all the staff are very pleasant. Dr Tennen was on time, very professional and to the point. She listened to my concerns and addressed them. It was a quick efficient visit, the way I like them. Most importantly, as she is an MD and surgeon, she and her office didn't push me to buy new overpriced glasses and weren't squirrelly about me taking a copy of my prescription. Selling glasses is not their main focus (pun intended) which is the way it should be. I have recommended her to my wife and daughter. read more

My wife was suffering from an eye infection. Since my son and I had gone to Dr. Tennen for eye exams, I made an appointment with her for my wife. They asked for my insurance info, then said have her come in. My wife said Dr. Tennen was impatient and rude, and spent at most 5 minutes with her. They then told her that they didn't accept our insurance, and the office fee was $160! They 'graciously' reduced the charge to $120. Needless to say, my family will take our business elsewhere. read more

I found out about this doctor from a reference of a reference because it was an emergency and few eye doctors were available during the holidays. I had never had my eye red for so long and after trying two different unsuccessful prescription drops from my doctor, I knew I had to see a specialist. I came here even after reading the reviews because I really had no option. She allowed me to explain my situation, but I felt I had to be brief. After I explained, she asked me to rest my chin on the stand and moved in closer to look at my eyes and did not tell me what to expect, like, " I am going to look at your eyes and this will touch your eye slightly for just a second, but you shouldn't feel much, etc." Something like this would be expected from a professional. She told me what she found and assured me her prescription would do the trick and it did. HOWEVER, after seeing my new optometrist after, she could not believe this doctor prescribed me such a harsh dose of Sulfacetamide 10% for 10 days! I did not realize, but my optometrist said this was a high dose and could have been the reason for my raised eye pressure. Then, a month later, I received a bill, but it was false because I paid the amount in full the same day. I don't like feeling like a bother for a few questions or clarification, when I tried to ask, she was short with me and not helpful. Not a safe place. read more

Dr. Tennen is amazing! She did my laser eye surgery a few years ago and it is the best thing I ever did for myself. I don't need glasses to read anymore!! Her confident, smart, assured approach put me right at ease. I am trying to remember how long ago this was... 2 or 3 years ago? And I am STILL reading like a champ, and wishing we had not moved away as I want to go back and see her again for my husband this time. I had the usual "up close" vision loss that comes with age. I was so frustrated with needing reading glasses all the time, in the grocery store to read labels, to read texts on my phone, to put make up on. I had never needed glasses before in my life. Dr. Tennen suggested monovision, which is where they correct one eye perfectly for reading and the other is corrected for long distance. Sounds crazy, but your brain automatically selects which eye it is going to use for tasks. She made me wear contact lenses for a week that would give me monovision to make sure I was comfortable with it. I was fine. So then we went ahead and did the surgery. Yes, it is freaky to get your EYEBALLS worked on. But Dr. Tennen was awesome all the way through. We met at a special surgical center in Encino (her office is in Agoura), the medical assistant gave me a little Valium to keep things reasonably chill. Then I lay down and the machine lowered toward my face. Dr. Tennen kept talking to me the whole time. Great positive affirmations that things were going well. It is over in literally minutes. There was no pain or discomfort, it was all mental nerves knowing that my eyeballs were being adjusted. As soon as the procedure was over we walked into a small exam room. I sat down and she gave me a business card and I could read EVERY SINGLE LETTER AND PUNCTUATION MARK. Amazing. Here I am 2 or 3 years later, still reading my phone, reading the grocery store labels and helping my husband find his glasses! There was some adjustment afterward as far as my long distance vision. If I had to watch the distant hills for bobcats that might be stalking me this could be a concern, but as I live in the suburbs and mostly am using a car, a computer or a smart phone, this has pretty much zero impact on me. It was a trade off I was willing to make as my frustration level with not being able to read without glasses was off the charts. My night driving is a little impacted. I can drive at night without glasses, but lights bother me a little more. Now that my husband is talking about getting laser eye surgery too, I would definitely drive over 100 miles to get back to Dr. Tennen. I trust her and am living proof of her awesome skills. She knows what she's doing and is caring, supportive, talented AND an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA. That doesn't suck. read more

Dr. Tennen is a nice lady and a good doctor, but her staff is completely incompetent. Her office staff could not even print me a receipt for eyeglasses purchased there and I am out over $200 because I could not be reimbursed. At my last (and I do mean LAST) appointment, I asked for a copy of my prescription, but the gal at the desk didn't know how to print it and said she'd email it to me later. Of course she never did. Worst of all is the optician in the office. The first time she talked to me she didn't listen to what I wanted and I ended up with pair of glasses completely different from what I ordered. When she tried to fix them, she got the prescription wrong. She insisted it was the prescription's fault, not hers, and made me make another appointment to see the doctor. Dr. Tennen was visibly angry at the optician when she realized that the optician had gotten the Rx wrong and wasted the doctor's time rechecking the Rx. After 6 appointments I finally got a pair of glasses that I can see out of, but they are far from perfect. I have no desire to deal with this office again so I'm just going to live with them until I find a new office to see this year. Dr. Tennen has had turnover in her staff due to disciplinary problems in the past, but her new team is worse, if that is possible. The previous optician knew how to make glasses and the staff could print a receipt. I wish Dr. Tennen would team up with a doctor who has business sense so I could continue seeing her. read more

I chose Dr Tennen to perform Lasik after meeting with several other providers to determine which would be best for me. I chose Dr Tennen because not only was she is a very good Dr (There are lots of good Drs who know their specialty) but because on top of being a fantastic Dr, she was the best communicator I met with. In fact, i live out of state and was recommended to her and after speaking on the phone decided to literally fly in for the procedure because she was so much better than the Dr's i interviewed in my hometown. She told me exactly what to expect, both good and bad, each step of the way. From Pre to Post op I experienced exactly what she said I would and it was comforting to know exactly what would happen next, how it would feel, what was happening, and why. Having Lasik feel like a scary thing upfront, but having a good Dr removes so much of the concern. When you have a good Dr that is also a great communicator, i can tell you the experience was awesome. Im 3 weeks into my post op and my experience has been great thanks to knowing what was going to happen and why. I would highly recommend her. (As a bonus her staff was really friendly to my 3 year old son who came in with my wife and I for the treatments. They were busy but always polite, which is sometimes hard with a 3 year old running around.) read more

I wish I could post NO stars. I went to this provider a few months ago so apologies for the late review but I have never been treated SO poorly from a doctor's office in my life. I kept waiting for the hidden cameras to come out as it was almost surreal. I had moved to the area and was in need of a new optometrist/ophthalmologist and was referred by a friend. Dr. Tennen was rude, condescending, and even rolled her eyes at my explanation of what I thought was happening with my eye. She eluded to the fact that I was using dirty contact lens cases (which I don't - not asking for an explanation at all) and why was I doing so as cases are "not expensive at all!". She stated that I was allergic to contacts and just seemed so annoyed to even be in the exam room (complete with loud sighs and slamming of drawers!!). She concluded after 7 minutes with me that I was allergic to the contacts I had been wearing for 10 years and needed a cortisone eye drop I would probably be on for the rest of my life. This wasn't accurate as after consulting with another provider - I switched to daily disposable lenses and have had no eye problems at all ever since. On top of this - I had to wait an hour to be seen and the front office staff almost denied my insurance as I had my husband's insurance card which has the same exact information. Who does this? I recommended my entire family no longer see Dr. Tennen based on my [lack of] care and rude treatment. 4 patients lost in 7 minutes - maybe the dirty eye contact cases are to blame... read more

Dr. Tennen can not keep a staff who knows anything about fitting glasses. The last pair of 4 successful glasses of the same make, model and frame I'm told today that this pair fit perfectly when one arm will not go behind my ear with me physically putting it in place. The women who adjusts glasses is rude and has no idea what she is doing. Dr. Tennen will not stand up for the product she sells. I've spent thousands of dollars at her office.....I guess she has other people fooled because she did not seem to care that I left disappointed and mad. Needless to say, I will never go back! I successfully adjusted my glasses with my clothes steamer when I got home. They fit just like my others. read more

I have seen D. Tennen for the past 10 years and have found her care to be exceptional . I am most impressed how easy she is to talk with, the time and care she spends during every exam. I have never felt rush. Two years ago, I scratched my cornea and was in great pain. My husband paged her in the middle of the night and she responded immediately. She had me in her office before she opened and I knew I was in excellent hands. I have referred my friends and family to Dr. Tennen. Without reservation, she is an outstanding physician. read more

Dr Tennen is a fantastic doctor. I had my eyes corrected with lassik with her 15 years ago and return to the office on occasion to have my eyes checked. I don't go to the office for the staff I go for the medical advice. I highly recommend dr Tennen if you need an eye doctor. read more

I arrived for my 4:30 appointment today at 4:25 and the staff was very nice. After waiting for an hour to see Dr. Tennen, I brought this fact to attention. At that point, with an complete rude attitude and aura of entitlement she told me it was busy, one person and my appointment was late in the day (I guess that entitled her to make me wait). I can help fix the fact that she is so busy, as she has at least one less customer. read more

I'm not the type to write reviews, but I felt the need to do so in this case. Dr. Tennen is the worst physician that I have ever visited (can I give no stars?). Very curt, unwelcoming, and didn't listen well. Very abrupt and made me feel like I couldn't ask questions or take the time to fully explain my concerns. Interrupted me several times while I was talking (it's as if her mind was already made up before she walked into the room based on the history that I presented to the assistant). No introduction when she walked in and was just as unprofessional when I walked out. She even laughed to herself and shook her head as I was trying to explain my concern - very condescending. In general, absolutely terrible bedside manner. I had someone accompanying me during the appointment, and she couldn't believe it either. When it comes to medical concerns, my mentality is always better safe than sorry (i.e. get it checked out even if you doubt it's serious). Dr. Tennen is the type of physician who, if you ever truly have a serious medical problem in the future, would make you question coming in to have it assessed at the risk of, once again, feeling stupid or unheard. This was my first and last experience with her. I've read some of the reviews below regarding her staff being the issue at her former practice. Dr. Tennen is now a physician at the prestigious Davidorf Eye Group, which I've been a patient of for years. I've never had a poor experience here until I saw Dr. Tennen (to note, Bernard and Jonathan Davidorf are VERY courteous and professional, and I highly recommend them; I only visited Dr. Tennen because the others were unavailable). My point? She now has great staff, yet my experience with her was poor. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Tennen for many years. She is great. Very friendly and thorough. My eyes and vision are the best they've ever been.

I am not a "going to the eye doc fan" - let's just get that out of the way right up front. I don't even touch my OWN eyes. But alas - Dr. Deb has been my eye doc since 1997 when I was younger and not at the mercy of the length of my arms, good lighting or reading glasses! Dr. Deb is professional, kind, smart, funny and has the patience of a saint! Oh and she has the BEST music playing in her office. It's a nice vibe and her patients are all long term; it's like family in there! Not like I look forward to seeing her annually, but if I have to see an ophthalmologist - she's the one! I have dry eyes and allergies; she's super knowledgeable about the latest treatments! My fav part is that when she walks in I don't feel like vomiting and she knows who I am - like she really knows me! I have sent oodles of my friends to her and will continue to - she's the BEST. I never wore glasses or contacts but if I did she would be my LASIK doc of choice! She rules! I don't have a complicated ocular history - but am still spastic when I'm in the chair; she totally gets this. How cool for your doctor to really "get" you?? She is a miracle worker; I'm fainting and worried I have all sorts of issues and she's so calm and mellow - very thorough, easy to talk to. I always feel great when i leave. I'm totally relaxed, I get the utmost in care and her office staff take really good care of me. Very accommodating with scheduling and stuff. LOVE!!! read more

The worst Doc I have ever been to. Went in for cataract surgery. She invited an old friend to watch. She was so busy talking to her friend that she did NOT center the new lens in my eye. A few days after surgery I began seeing extra lights at night. Instead of two headlights I would see four. She said I could put drops in my eye to dial ate it every night. I finally had the surgery to fix what she did. Stay away. read more

I sent my 18 year old daughter in for an eye exam yesterday because I had visited Dr. Tennen's office a couple of years ago and I knew they accepted VSP. I just had my eyes checked then and didn't need glasses so I had no idea what I was sending my daughter into. Evidently if a parent is not there to accompany an 18 year old the office staff sees fit to totally take advantage of a child. My daughter came home with a sample pack of the exact same contact lenses she has been wearing for the past year (so her eye sight hasn't changed much) yet they kept her glasses and didn't explain to her what they were charging for. They went ahead and ordered the full amount of contacts the VSP benefit would allow for then proceeded to charge over $300 out of our pocket for new lenses for her existing frames. I called to ask why they kept her glasses if her contact prescription hadn't changed and was told there was a slight change in her glasses. I said I wouldn't have agreed to the charges for the glasses and wouldn't have ordered them and the woman who answered my call said "she signed for it." They didn't explain how much they were charging for what or what our total portion was nor how much it would be to go the cheaper route like the lenses she already had. To top it all off her appointment was for 3:30 and she didn't even go in to the exam room until after 4:30. read more

I had a truly fabulous experience having LASIK vision correction surgery with Dr Tennen. The pre-surgery exam was comprehensive as was her explanation of the surgery. Some time prior to the surgery was spent trying out mono-vision to test and get the correct working prescription for me. I felt at each office visit she spent plenty of time with me and made sure she clearly explained everything and had answered all of my questions, I came in with a list of questions on my second visit. Her explanation of the laser surgery was great and very comprehensive and reassuring; just as she was during the surgery itself. She was very realistic with what I could expect and could experience in the immediate post procedure recovery. I drove 70 miles to have her do the surgery knowing the results several of my friends had that she had done LASIK on; so glad I did. I'm 36 hours post treatment, seeing great, no discomfort and so glad that I went to Dr Tennen for her skill and expertise. BTW I'm an RN and work in private practice, never judge an office based on the front office, they are not treating you, the physician is and she is great, very skilled and knowledgeable. That said, I had no problems with the front office staff but would not describe them as warm and caring as Dr Tennen is but they are competent. She uses a full laser technique for LASIK including to make the corneal flap. From my research this is a procedure where both skill and the equipment count, you get both with Dr Tennen as your LASIK surgeon! read more
