I had an eye emergency due to pain, redness and weeping in my right eye. Dr Karlin got me in to see him in between patients on his surgery day. He was very attentive checking my eye for potential vision, pressure problems. His office staff was also very friendly and helpful. It turned out to be an eye infection for which he prescribed eye drop antibiotics. He really seemed to care and be concerned. I highly recommend him as an ophthalmologist! read more

I saw him a year or two ago, and will not be returning because the billing department absolutely killed it for me with their ridiculous billing procedures and charging beyond my co-pay (and if they are reading this, please don't message me on here with an apology and that you want to make things right, it's too late, your biller/coder lady pissed me off.) My experience at my one and only appointment was pretty weird. Apparently this genius doctor who has been on the job since the dawn of time knows eyes, and every other organ too. When I went for the appointment I happened to be wearing a cast on my leg after having torn my Achilles tendon a few weeks earlier. Unlucky timing, I needed a new prescription for glasses and had to take care of that as well. When I told him how the accident happened, he proceeded to launch into an analysis about that instead of my eyes, as if he didn't even believe what I was telling him about what happened to me. HELLO? I'm in your office because of my eye issues. I know you're just trying to be friendly but I kinda don't need your insight on this, I'm here about my eyes. I wanted to say to this guy, or maybe I even did, "So you're like a jack of all trades, huh? You're an eye surgeon and you're also an orthopedic expert? Quite a set of credentials." He said, "One reason people's Achilles tendons tear is because they take certain antibiotics." Yeah that's cool, I don't ever take those, but here's another reason - like 99 times out of 100, it happens because they play sports, or are otherwise physically active and the tendons can snap if you overdo it and your foot twists in just the wrong way, no matter how much you try to prevent it. I guess that didn't register with him, but then I guess some doctors are just overly skeptical and think they know the patient's body better than the patient does. Anyhow, all of the above is all very secondary. I had a much better experience 5-6 years ago when I had vision insurance and went to a local optometrist who as I remember had a "top provider" designation under that plan. They ran all the eye tests you could even hope to imagine and charged me nothing beyond the co-pay which was like 10 bucks (versus $50 plus another $65 for the eye tests at Karlin's office), and $25 copay for the glasses. I never signed up for vision insurance at work again after that year, figuring I would not need it again for a long while. Since it is so cheap, I will be signing up again for it next year and returning to that other doctor. read more

I have gone to Dr Karlin for a long time, and he is a good doctor. The staff on the other hand are very unprofessional. I called on three separate days to get an appointment and got the message that they were busy, to leave my number and they would call me back. I waited a day in-between and on the third call I gave them two numbers to reach me at, and said if I didn't hear back I would find another doctor. I did receive a call, but not very pleasant. I arrived at 9:00 for my 9:15 appointment. People were coming in and leaving and I was still sitting in the lobby. I finally saw the Doctor at 11:00, and I was livid. It was well planned by the staff to make me sit because I had pointed out the fact that I didn't get a call back. The staff was either sour or they had smirks, so they were very pleased with themselves that I was angry. Clearly they have done this before. When I told the doctor he ask if I had called during the day, which was insulting. I understand that patients come and go, and I will be one to go. read more

If I could give Dr Karlin all the stars on the Hollywood walk of fame, I would because heavens knows how much he truly deserves it!!! To demonstrate how serious my case was I've added pictures of how much my eyes improved --and basically healed just after three visits but I'll give you the back story as well. I got pinkeye from the work place and started the treatment process at the ER,...big mistake!! The drops they provided made it much worse. When I went to my PCP, she only added fuel to the fire and my symptoms progressed but she also referred me to the ophthalmologist at Jules Stein in UCLA. At that point, I thought I'll be fine...I'm receiving world class care, after all it's UCLA!! Wrong once more. Two days after using the drops from Jules Stein, I almost lost my vision in its entirety. I became extremely sensitive to the smallest rays of light, my lids were extremely inflamed and in my eyes were very red and irritated. Luckily, a family friend referred me to Dr. Karlin, and my pot of luck finally struck gold (on the 4th try). His office gave me an urgent appointment and within 24 from the time of my initial appointment, I had gained back most of my vision. I'm still in awe about his expertise and professionalism. Besides being an phenomenal doctor, he's also a wonderful human being. Who else would call in to the pharmacy on a Sunday just to make sure you have access to your drops. I wish it was 10 stars which what this office deserve. The follow ups, customer service and the orgnization of this office is beyond any place ai have ever seen. My mother had a surgery and Rachel ( I htink she is the surgery coordinator) was so on the ball at all times that I was very impressed. She was on time, called so often to make sure everything is on schedule and her sunny and upbeat attitude gave us such a good feeling. Dr Karlin also is so knowledgable and very caring. My wife has the higher eye pressure that needs to be treated. One of our friend recommend Dr. Karlin to us. Dr. Karlin listens to my wife's description of feelings. He examined her eye carefully and performed the laser procedure on the eye. The pressure is lower to the normal range. After the follow-up check, my wife had questions. I called the office and Dr. Karlin called me back and answered questions and gave great advice. We will have him to treat our eyes. read more

Dr Karlin is friendly and helpful but the billing department is extremely rude, completely incompetent and unprofessional. The worst customer service experience I've ever had. Judging by their reviews on Yelp and Google, many other patients feel this way about their billing department. It took them 4 months to figure out that there was a problem with their credit card machine and that my payment was not received. My mother received care in early January 2019. She was charged $100 prior to leaving the office, after the care was provided. She was given a receipt that she unfortunately lost. 4 months later we get an invoice of $100 for services provided in early January, along with a letter stating that if not paid within 2 weeks, the debt will be sent to collection. My mother, rightfully confused, calls the office to get clarification. At which point Fariba from the billing department, hangs up on my mother once, calls her a liar, accuses her of not paying, and says that she doesn't have time to explain. Confused and angered about employee's behavior, we drove to the office to speak with Dr Karlin. For whatever reason, the doctor was unavailable or unwilling to speak with us about the professionalism of his employee. We had a respectful dialogue regarding the billing issue with Rachel at the office. She explained that sometimes the card machines don't work. During this dialogue Fariba rudely interrupts to declare that the office is now closed and that we have to leave. Rachel even told her that she will close up as soon as she gets the situation cleared up with us. But Fariba was very adamant to close her self. As long as the aforementioned individual is employed by Dr. Karlin, they'll mess up your payment, blame you for it, hang up on you if you call for clarification, and close on you if you show up. She's either uneducated in or unwilling to fulfill her duties at the billing department. There are several complaints by other Yelp and google users, specifically naming her, going back 4 years. Which makes it clear than Dr. Karlin does not care about the unprofessional behavior exhibited by his staff. This is also exemplified by his unwillingness to speak with us regarding the issue at the office. If you do not want to be disrespected, yelled at, and belittled, do yourself a favor and go to a different optometrist. read more

Staff intimidates & surprises senior citizens into paying $50 for the Dr's visit, right at the moment the dr is going to walk in to examine you. My father went in a few days ago, asked if they accept medicare insurance, which they said they did. Most ophthalmologists accept medicare with no copay, or their staff is decent enough to tell you if there is a copay... not this guy. My father was there twice before the day of the appointment to make the appointment in person, then turn in the paperwork and sign documents/ give a copy of his license/medicare/medi-cal cards, etc. No mention of a copay. During the appointment, the optometrist or assistant checked his vision, walked out, then they come in asking for $50 on the spot so the Dr can check his eyes.... what a joke. Let's be a little more professional. It's a good thing my 75 y.o. father was in his right mind and walked out, but I'm sure some elderly will be stressed and just pay what he's asking for. Find a new profession if you think it's right to bully old people. I say this because after mentioning this to some friends at the senior complex he lives in, an elderly woman confessed that she paid them and was intimidated in a similar fashion. She paid because she was worried the optometrist had seen something dangerous and thought she really needed the dr's exam at that moment. I was referred to Dr. Karlin from the medical team across the street in the ER after experiencing vision loss over the weekend. I didn't know what to expect, but when I saw the doctor, I was extremely satisfied. He quickly diagnosed my condition, which was misdiagnosed by my primary care physician, and gave me all the information I needed (plus medication of course). It was a great experience all around. Do not, I repeat do not go to this Doctor. They do not know how to bill a diabetic preventive exam. They sent us to collection because they billed the insurance company incorrectly. They used a diabetes diagnosis when it should have been a diabetic well exam. Please save yourself the mental anguish. We have tried numerous times to get them to change the billing and they don't. We have called the patient liaisons, and they said there is nothing we can do. Don't let this office take your money like they took ours. read more

We had a female Dr. treating my mom at first. She was scatterbrained, texting, and just appeared to be having a bad day. Dr. Karlin came in and saved the day. He's patient and just an overall nice man. The 3 stars is for his incompetent staff. The visit was back in March. Flash forward to October we receive an invoice for the first time for $12 outstanding. I call in, give Gilda my phone number and ask her to fax the receipt so I could be done with this. Next day I notice the charge hit my credit card, no receipt. Called in and was transferred to a very rude Fariba who informed me they chose to ignore my fax request and mail it out instead. Will not be returning no matter how good the Dr is. To be fair just received a message from Gilda letting me know she would fax the receipt over. It is a sad truism in today's society that many doctors care more about their Saturday and their money than their patient's health. This seems to be the case with the incredibly abrasive and dismissive Dr. Karlin. After a trip to the emergency room necessitated an immediate weekend follow up with an opthamologist, and my husband was referred to Dr. Karlin, the 'good' doctor essentially disputed our need for an appt. He questioned the care of the ER physician and told us they were just covering their ass by suggesting a follow up. This, having not ever seen the patient in question or even his chart! Covering his ass is also exactly what he did when he refused to put any of this is writing and waived us off. Oh, well, he did say we could 'pay him money' by visiting him in the ER again if we really wanted to. Hippocrates would be shamed. read more

I went to Dr Karlin to have cataract surgery. His staff was polite and professional. Dr Karlin removed the cataract and the replacement lens has made my world a lot brighter and more colorful. I did not know how dark my world had become. My friends tell me I am a lot happier now. I very much appreciated the staff at the surgical center who made triple sure everything was correct. My case was more difficult and took the doctor three times longer. Dr Karlin kept working on me till it was perfect. I will be returning to have my other eye operated on next month. Thank you so much. p.s. the person who complained about her boyfriend's experience referred to the doctor as a she, Dr Karlin is male maybe wrong doctors office. Stay away from this office. My mother had been told by her Dr. That eventually she would need cataract surgery but not now. 6 months later she moved here and I took her to see Dr Karlin. He toldbeing.That she would need surgery right away. She had both surgery's done and we got a bill from Medicaid saying that they had not authorized it. By the way he also has ownership in the surgery center. I asked for the billing person in the office, they introduced me to a very rude woman, with an attitude to boot. I asked her why I was getting a bill from medicare saying they never approved the surgery, she shakes her head at me telling me that we don't get approval. I have never heard of anyone not getting approval from insurance before doing surgery. Then I asked her why they didn't submit it to medical for her secondary she says let me check. She comes back all loud in front of the other patients stating that she was out of state and that is why. I wouldn't have had a problem had it not been for this woman's bad attitude. Then she tells me that we owe another $70 for measuring her eye. All this Doctor cares about is making money and lots of it. He doesn't care about a patients well being. They Hurd you in an out. Out of all the staff in the office the only one that is nice and genuine is Rachel, the rest are robots. Stay as far away as you can. I would confidently recommend Dr. Karlin. He is a pleasant, friendly man who listens, maintains eye contact and takes time to explain things thoroughly. I never feel rushed, which nowadays is pretty rare. I went to him, with a concerning problem. He was completely booked on the day I called, but the scheduler squeezed me in. I ended up needing a laser procedure which Dr. Karlin performed the following Wednesday. All went well, and my post op visit was uneventful. I can't speak to the billing problems prior reviewers are complaining about...I haven't had any. I offered to pay my copay at the time of my visits but was told they would bill me after the insurance paid. If I could give this place no stars I would! My boyfriend had an appointment today at 11:00 a.m and it was the worst experience. He went in today for an eye exam to get new contacts which he really needs. The ladies at the front desk were nice and answered all questions. The Dr was a different story. When she started the eye exam she was rude the whole time. When she started switching the lens she said is this better he said 'no' how about this one he said 'no' again and than she said well than that's the best it can get. Really? Than he said nicely 'what is the $180 that I'm spending for?' She than said 'if you don't want to be here you can leave. I'm too tired anyways.' He wasn't going to stay after that. So unprofessional of her. Dr's are here to help people and she was 'too tired'! My boyfriend is currently looking for a Dr to go to now for his contacts that he really needs. I should have read the reviews before seeing this doctor! Their office clerks are the WORST!!! I was told that they called my insurance and my exam was covered unless i wanted an exam to check my eyes for glasses, then I would be charged $50! I declined the glasses check and still received the bill for $50. I called the office and the woman who answered the phone was horribly rude! I would not give even one star,terrible office staff, my wife went for contact lens exam and she told them upfront that our health insurance does not cover the eye exam, they charged her $160 upfront which she paid in cash, few month later we received a bill from this doctor asking for $100, I contacted the office and they said this is remaining balance after insurance was billed!!! I told them my wife disclosed up front that she does not have insurance for eye exam and she paid $160 cash up front for contact lens exam, they were very rude and accused my wife of lying and hung up on me!!! recently I received a call from collection agency asking for payment! they not only asking for money they should not have asked for, now they have reported this to collection agency!! horrible service, lack of knowledge, lack of customer service and very rude. 0 stars.... I'm considering getting LASEK again and so I thought I would share my story here about his office. I originally paid for LASEK w/ one of the Drs working under Dr. Karlin. She is very nice however unprofessional in the sense shes always late (Min. Hr wait time). Dr. Karlin and her performed LASEK on both eyes and my vision quickly deteriated to marginally better after the surgery. If I would of had insurance at the time I could have got it redone at no cost as it would be considerer non-elective and corrective at that point, however I didnt. So they suggested doing it again stating that they wouldnt charge however I would still have to pay the $300 to the surgery center. After the retry my left eye came to a point where if I squint I can see at a 40/20 level, my right is still completely blurry. The 3rd try and another $300 later resulted in no change. The 4th time he recommended scraping my eye in house as he believed that my eye was scarring irregularly and that was causing the irregular healing leading to blurry. When he was putting a scapel like tool on my eye ball he commented that "I shouldnt be so nervous and that I needed to relax." when obviously he wasnt instilling confidence. Well shocking that since a laser couldnt do it his attempt wasnt much better. Finally after no success he recommended a 4th LASEK procedure on my right eye! When I was nervous and asked him if in his medical opinion if he truly thought my eye would ever be close to 20/20 he became irritated and rude and this was his response: "Do you think im just doing this for fun? Like im just here wasting my time...." I told him that I thought he was doing this because all in my family at the time had put more than $5K in his pocket plus surgery center fees. Being the naive kid at the time I was I just assumed that hes a Dr. and must know whats best and I allowed him to perform the surgery again (paying another $300). This time he said it would be different because he was going to use a medication called metrozianol that prevents scarring so that the idea was that during the healing process when my eye becomes 20/20 (FYI this is how LASEK works, you are immediately blurry after surgery and then eye heals to prescribed shape) I would come in and he would administer the metrozianol to prevent any further changes in shape. Didn't work. We ended our relationship when he asked me if I was on any drugs that would cause this like im supposed to know what drugs would cause irregular scarring of occular geometry, and wasnt on any medications anyways. Never offered a refund or apology or anything. Saw him at work bartending one day and he akwardly said hi to me and completely ignored the elephant in the room. Not only is he unprofessional but I truly believe this man is a bad human being. BE ADVISED. As I said it is now years later and Im considering doing it again with another Dr. of course and they have advised me that there might not be enough material left to laser off to correct the problem. Please learn from my mistakes as a young kid and DO NOT RISK YOUR EYES WITH THIS MAN or his team. I was lucky to get partially Okay vision in the left and not allow him to try and "perfect" that one. read more
