I've only been to Debra's once and I already have a long shopping list on the fridge for my next trip, which I need to plan soon and allot for ample time. I live about an hour away and learned about Debra's on a Reddit thread about where to get wheat berries. Sure enough I called and Debra's confirmed they had soft white wheat berries, which I have not been able to find anywhere else. Upon arrival I knew I'd be staying a while! It's so clean and well organized. This place is my dream come true. They have everything you need to live a cleaner, less toxic, and less wasteful life. Bulk spices, grains, coffee, teas, hygiene/beauty products. I definitely need to get back! Everyone there was so helpful and kind. I wish I lived closer!!! Worth the trip though. read more

My partner and I just visited what we thought was a lovely place to browse and perhaps buy a few things. We looked at the business hours at the door, saw it closed at 6:30 pm and I looked at the time and it was 6:08pm. We were met with a woman who immediately made it a point to inform us that the store was closing at 6:30. We stated that we appreciated it but we did note the sign at the door. This woman, with a gray bob haircut, followed us and watched us as we browsed the personal care section, which made us uncomfortable. We continued to look through the store at the groceries, and at 6:15, the cashier, short gray hair, approached us that they the store was closing at 6:30pm. We said we've already been informed and when we were told at 6:08 we probably should've left then. Shockingly, she replied, "yeah, you probably should have." First of all, management should suggest to staff that a notice to customers probably shouldn't be made until five minutes before closing to wrap up purchases. After all, this isn't a large supermarket, customers are pretty accessible to ask to check out shortly before closing time. What this pushy approach does is discourages customers from doing business and make the experience uncomfortable. Also, we shouldn't feel like we are "watched" as we aren't children. The cashier's flippant response was just unacceptable. These social transactions between business and customer leave lasting impressions. We already do our best to feel comfortable in spaces where there are higher income residents and more upscale businesses. As a gay couple who may not immediately give obvious indicators that we are, we sometimes feel like we run into situations such as this as we aren't in the heteronormative mold. Of course, this part is speculative. The bottom line is we felt like we were given a cold reception, were condescended to, and then in the end, made to feel unwelcome. Would we go in again? I am not so sure. Perhaps if management could assure us that this isn't typical, we would. In the meantime, we feel perplexed and unsettled. It's truly unfortunate, because the store seemed otherwise wonderful. read more

Debra's Natural Gourmet is a hidden gem in West Concord. You come here if you are in need of stuff you cannot find at Whole Foods or a similar store. You can tell the love and passion of the people that work here. The store is known for the wide selection of organic goods, deli, and food you can eat there or takeaway. I was on a mission to find a very specific vegan butter. Instead of winging it and going to the store (which would have been going to my fourth store to find this butter), I called and asked if they had it in stock. Fortunately, it was! Once I got in the store, an employee quickly assisted me and shared that it was a fantastic butter indeed. Upon walking through the rest of the store, there's plenty of Walden Co. Meats, various organic fresh and canned vegetables, cheeses, and other grocery items. Debra's also has an assortment of vitamins, supplements, and prepared food. I would love to come here for lunch one day and check out the rest of the store!! She also hosts a variety of different events, such as making your own face cream, book discussion, and making bath bombs. Worth the detour. Got off the route for a work trip, they helped me and showed me where to go, allowed me to charge my phone, and I had the BEST vegan tikka. One of the best meals of my life. Incredible. Came back the next day (intentionally) and had vegan pizza and a wrap for the rest of my trip. Passes the "chipotle test"- having enough food/satiation for around $8. The workers were so helpful and pleasant in explaining how the store works and I was able to find everything I needed. Love that they carry Maine grains flours and oats. Was pleasantly surprised that the total for a bag full of food was under $40--and no unnecessary plastic or waste! Will definitely be back next time I need to restock. read more

Debra's is a wonderful store. We've been shopping here for thirty three years, almost since they opened, and the staff has been consistently friendly, informed and helpful. They tend to carry a great (and interesting) variety of products, probably more than most commercial chains; in fact the chains would probably optimize profitability by trimming the number of SKU-alternatives, but Debra's doesn't, at the benefit of the customers. They always seem to carry EVERYTHING I need, and it is great to be able to find everything I need in one easy stop. Other folks have written that it is expensive, but I have found it to be the same approximate cost for similar items (vegan, natural, organic, etc). I am an avid cook and have consistently purchased bulk herbs/spices from Debra's. My purchase of prepackaged herbs/spices in plastic bags on 2/17 was less than satisfying. The Cajun seasoning, onion and garlic grandules, and ginger powder were tasteless as when used in recent recipes. Extremely disappointing. I phoned the store this a.m. to be told the plastic bags are porous and how I needed to transfer herbs/spices into jars. The store's response sounded like my complaint had no substance, and, no offer was made to evaluate the products for quality and customer satisfaction. We love Debra's and are thrilled to see that they're expanding next door. We always try to support local as much as possible -- and Debra's also has some great grocery items. Workers are friendly and helpful. However, I just recommend that customers check and recheck packaged produce. Twice we bought bagged lettuce that unfortunately had to be discarded. This is certainly more than a lunch spot, but I work in the area and come here 2-3 days a week for lunch (to-go but they also have a few tables). Deb's has a nice variety of soups, hot meals and cold items such as sandwiches (mostly vegetarian), salads and misc deli type items such as tuna, coleslaw, chicken salads etc. -Everything is fresh and of a very high quality. I have never had a meal there (out of about 100) that didn't meet those standards. -You will pay for that quality. This isn't a five star review because the prices are unnecessarily high, but it works because of the area. Think of a more expensive Whole Foods. -The staff are all very friendly and willing to help in any way they can, but I can't get through this review without mentioning that the cashiers seem to be set on slomo with little exception. If you're looking for a bite to eat or a mom-and-pop with "organic" in the name, this is for you! read more

If you want to try kale salad Debra's is a great place to start. A nice combination of lemon juice and avocado gave this salad more flavor than I expected, even though I like kale. I also he lentil spinach zucchini feta salad. It's richer than the kale due to lots of tasty feta. Both were winners. read more

I absolutely love Debra's Natural Gourmet. My coworker brought me in once for lunch and I have been going back ever since. Debra's offers a wide variety of food - from regular grocery items and bulk items to specialty drinks (SO MUCH kombucha!!) and lunch items. Their food is tasty and delicious and I would say that most people could find what they're looking for. One of the cool things about Debra's is also that they offer stamp/rewards cards for customers and also have a flyer with (I believe) a monthly recipe. The only complaint I would have is that the fruit is a little pricier than other places I have gone to, so I usually don't buy fruit here. However, everything else is extremely well-done and I highly recommend it. read more

People are helpful & friendly which is always a plus. The issue is how expensive this place is. But then again you're in Concord where all the pretentious white people live, I guess it goes w/ the territory. So they have all kinds of different products that you won't find in a regular store. I am trying to be more environmentally friendly and so I brought my own jars to fill up with bulk products. I have to apologize a lot for being from New England. In Chicago, where I live, New England has either no reputation at all ("is that part of the US?") or is scorned as the home of cold, unfriendly (but mostly liberal) people with multiple graduate degrees who wait tables for a living. I was starting to believe the rest of the country when mom and I went to Debra's to search for a supplement I couldn't find at the Natural Dictator, the national specialty chain that owns the natural and organic channel. Everything I was being brainwashed to believe - about my own people, no less! - was turned on its head. Helpful staff engaged me in conversation about the supplements I was looking for. They even directed me to a few new things that, given my poverty, I could only admire. The cashier talked to us about another product, a diabetes-friendly coconut sugar from Indonesia that we were buying, and explained how to use it and how the kitchen staff was already incorporating it into the prepared foods they were selling. For folks over 60 (like mom) there's a 20% discount on supplements that are not already on sale. The selection of supplements is huge and consists of many brands not commonly found at the Natural Dictator. The staff there is extremely knowledgable and one of them even manufactures and markets his own immunity-boosting tincture. I'm quite smitten with Debra's. Unlike the Natural Dictator, Debra's sells some harder to find flours, grains, and sweeteners that people with Celiac and gluten intolerance will love - their selection goes well beyond Bob's Red Mill. They stock teff (you'll need to grind it yourself), certified gluten-free oats, extra fine ground rice flour, light buckwheat and sorghum. There are tons of sprouted grain preparations and flours. If I lived near Debra's, it would be a regular stop on my shopping circuit. For now I'll stop in whenever I'm visiting mom. She really likes the raw agave gelato. First, this place is amazing. Yes - some items are more expensive than WF, but this is a real small business, and you support a community by shopping here, you don't just pay for an executive's spring vacation. From kombucha on tap, to a wide selection of gluten-free flours and meals, to an amazing prepared foods section, this grocery store packs in a lot of variety into a small area. The hummus is amazing! My girlfriend has a bad reaction to a lot of processed grocery store hummuses, but Debra's is natural, and preservative free. I like the outta the park chicken wrap! read more

Whenever I need anything that's a little bit out of the ordinary, this is where I go. I try to purchase staples here as well since supporting local businesses is always a good thing! Great for vegan food and any other special diets, and they have some yummy pre-made vegan lunches which are great when I need a quick bite. The bulk grains/beans/etc and spices are my most purchased items. They are also the ONLY place I have found that carries hazelnuts that are delicious and never rancid. This is the place to go to find your more esoteric natural foods items. I picked up chickpea flour, last time I was in. They also have a remarkably well stocked Herb and Supplement section. This may be the crunchiest Earthy Crunchy shop still around. I mean that in a nice way. The staff is really nice, and helpful, and knowledgeable. It's really relaxing to come in here. Bonus! Debra's is the go to place that has the specialty items you won't find at some of the bigger chains such as Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. My favorites are the Douglas Fir tea and the 7 grain hot cereal that is sold in bulk, for the most reasonable price of $1.79/lb. I honestly have the energy to paint an entire house by myself, after having this cereal for breakfast. The owner has a true through and through commitment to organic eating and the holistic way of living. There is a real sense of community every time I am in the store. Everyone on the staff is extremely knowledgeable about the products they stock and organic cooking in general. Several times I was looking for items they didn't frequently stock, and they immediately ordered them, with a responsive follow up call to me. Although the prices can and will add up if you buy everything you see and crave, stopping in for some of the more hard-to-find and unique items is great! The staff at Debra's will shock you with how attentive and willing they are to aid you in your shopping. Food allergies? They have the answers. What the hell can I do with Dandelion and French couscous? They will have a damn fine answer! If they don't directly know then they will ask another employee until you are left feeling quite satisfied and confident in your purchase(s). The prepared foods range from ultra-savory salads, wraps, and pastas, to desserts both traditional and vegan. My personal niches there include the extensive by-the-pound grain, rice, and pasta section, the gelato, and they also have these individual lassi drinks. I love me some lassi!
