Driving between Mount Vernon and Anacortes, we couldn't help but be enticed by the distillery ads across the highway from the Swinomish Casino. "FREE TASTING ROOM!" "APPLE PIE MOONSHINE!" Went by today and it was so great. We were greeted by Paul, the owner, standing behind the granite counter. Apparently that was his business before the spirits-making -- granite counter tops (which is based next door). Deception Distilling only opened last year. After some lovely conversation, Paul pulled out a few glasses and we sipped some moonshine, vanilla vodka, gin, and -- the pièce de résistance -- the apple pie moonshine. It's so good, and Paul started telling us about the different things people have made with it. Ice cream syrup. Bread pudding. Spiked apple cider. Our eyes grew wider with the possibilities. And yes, the tasting was entirely free. You're only really getting what equates to a couple sips each, but if you're buying it helps to know what you're getting beforehand. The bottles are priced at $23 apiece, but with Washington state tax it comes up to $30. We gladly picked up the apple pie moonshine. They accept cash or card. When we asked if it was OK if we took pictures of the still (which was made in Germany) through the window, Paul opened the door and ushered us in saying we could take pictures of anything we liked. We met one of the guys working there who took us around to see the distilling process, opening lids off things so we could watching the yeast boiling. He pulled the corks off of casks and let us smell the bourbon they've been making. Highly recommend a visit if you're in the area! read more

Why does this company have a tasting room? The only times they are open are Monday through Friday 10 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. My wife and I have wanted to go here several times, but they are only open when most average people work. This is literally the only tasting room I have ever heard of that is closed on the weekends! read more

Deception Distilling is a small operation attached to a granite business. I was greeted by a friendly young woman who walked me through the spirits key points. The tasting room is quant and gives you a view of the stills. After trying a vodka, apple pie & blueberry moonshine I decided on purchasing a bottle of their gin. Great spirits and knowledgeable staff. Check them out!! read more

One of the things I loved is that they support local business including farmers by using their products in their spirit making process. Another favorite of mine was the building and how the wood and metals are all repurposed. Definitely recommend stopping by here.

He told us that local restaurants like Prima Bistro in Langley uses their rye whiskey to make Old Fashioned (which we have tried unknowingly that the base whiskey was from here). This place has limited hours starting on Thursday. It was our last day on the island and I've been…read morewanting to visit. We stopped and a tall man with a very deep voice as if he stepped out of a tv commercial. All good, and I said I wanted to do a tasting. It was $15 per tasting, if you purchased a bottle it was waived. They have 3 types. Gin, Apple Brandy and a single malt that is basically a scotch but in the US you can't call it that, just like making a bourbon from a different country. Anyhow I liked them all but it was between the brandy and single malt. The single malt was $125, brandy is $105 and the gin is $75. Either way expensive. I got the most expensive and it waived my tasting and another person in my group. He explained that the brandy is aged for 4 years in an American oak barrel. He said they hand pick and source all the apples from the island. The next batch will yield 132 gallons of brandy and they will age it for four years. Whatever is remaining after some of it is lost in the barrel. Wine, we have to top it off to prevent oxidation but whiskey that will not happen. Anyhow it was a good find and I need to take this home on the plane. I recommend this place. It's on the main drag of East sound near the realtor office on the side, right before the public restrooms if you're coming from the main part of town. It's easy to miss it.

We actually made it on our way back and so glad we did. They have a lot of unique flavors. We just got a couple double scoops so we could try more flavors! Once Baked Cookie Dough (5): My wife loves the traditional cookie dough so this piqued our interest. If you've ever had a pizookie, its sort of like that. Sort of underbaked and soft. It was delicious! Coffee Toffee Crunch (5): Can't go wrong with a coffee/toffee combo. Their slow churned process makes this really creamy and delicious! Wild Blackberry (4): Curiosity got to us on this one since wild blackberries seem to be everywhere up here. I've had some really good ones and some really questionable ones. This was good. What I'd expect. What this proved to me was their sweet cream base is amazing and can be paired with anything really. Lemon Raspberry (5): Wasn't expecting much but this one blew me away. This was my favorite of the group! Sweet and tart and fruity all at the same time with no flavor overpowering another. Very good. Cold Brew Float (4): This is really just a cup of the ice cream of your choice. Then you grab a can of their cold brew and pour it on top. I went with their mint chip. It was good. The cold brew was good. This is something I feel like I'd do at home too. (and I think I will cause we're taking some pints home!) Overall, a great stop on your way to wherever. They have pints to take home as well. Luckily we had a cooler in the car so we took home our favorite flavors. We'll be making this a stop whenever we're in the area now.

Absolutely amazing place for wines. Absolutely amazing…read more I wanted to find somewhere to buy a bottle of wine for friends we were going to have dinner with later that day: he's a chef and the former part-owner of a series of very popular restaurants in Seattle (owned by his family)... so no ordinary wine was going to do. We spied Compass Wines by accident driving from Anacortes toward I-5 Southbound, and took a chance that they might have a good selection of wines with which to choose from. Indeed they do. The individual who helped me not only recommended an exceptional wine -- a 2016 vintage of a Cabernet Sauvignon -- but one that impressed my friend... who is not easily impressed. Not at all. What's more, they were featuring Scotch -- and while my partner and I seldom drink, we occasionally have a bit of scotch every once in a while (we still have a few bottles purchased ten years ago... almost all of them have only had 4-5 ounces consumed). My partner and I are very partial to Macallan, but the Gordon & Macphail won out. Single malts rock! It's been my experience that those wine stores that have great selections cater to regular customers who know a great deal about wine -- but they tend, more often than not, to be a bit snobbish and look down upon those of us whose knowledge of wine wasn't genetically-encoded in our DNA. Not these people: the proprietors were very forgiving and helpful, and they know their wines! (And Scotch!) The individual helping me took all the time I needed to gather information about which Cabernet to buy, and it certainly paid off for me! That kind of service should be a standard for other companies to emulate. What impressed me more was their selection of Leonetti Cellar wines: I've known Gary Figgens, the owner of Leonetti Cellar, for over 40 years -- and have a number of their wines in my cellar. I'd give Compass Wines a sixth star if possible... just on the merit of featuring Leonetti Cellar wines, one of six favorite vintners. I do know enough about domestic wines to understand that this store has a superlative selection -- and I'd love to come back and talk about foreign wineries and wines. I know a good deal about Australian, New Zealand, German and Austrian wines.., but I'd like to come back just to see what I might learn. A friend of mine, working in London for a prestigious law firm, thought he might purchase a derby to wear. He spent three and one-half very enjoyable hours in conversation and being fitted for a derby, and felt so impressed by the impassioned storekeeper that he write him a letter thanking him for a memorable day. While I intended to pop into the store and quickly buy a bottle of wine, I spent 83 minutes in conversation about Cabernet Sauvignon, Scotch, and Scotland. There are many wine stores in Washington -- and the U.S. -- but very few of them are of the quality of Compass Wines in terms of selection, knowledge, and customer service. Try them!
