I've gone in and watched how male shoppers are treated and it's a whole different thing. If you bring it to the cashiers attention in hopes she will let management know and make a change that fits with this decade, you hear, they're just trying to be gentlemen, hun. If you're a woman that is capable and isn't a damsel in distress, you shouldn't go there. It's an absurd and incredibly upsetting experience.

One can't get that attention at a big box store, even if the aisles are wide. That said, there are better stores for some items, but knowing where to shop for what is a customer's responsibility. I really like the convenience, friendly staff and good quality of merchandise at Cooks, and highly recommend them - no reservations at all if you plan your shopping intelligently.

I arrived around 8:30 a.m. when the store was quiet, intending to purchase four outdoor light fixtures along with several solar lights. I approached two associates in the lighting department to ask where I could find a specific fixture, but it was obvious I was interrupting their conversation about weekend plans. After multiple attempts to get assistance, I gave up and searched for everything myself, hoping I was buying the correct products. When I finally made it to self-checkout, one of the light fixtures scanned $40 higher than the shelf price. I waited for the self-checkout associate, Deb, to approve the price correction. She walked away, came back, helped several other customers around me, then walked away again without ever acknowledging that I had been standing there waiting. It wasn't just me who noticed. Other customers were shaking their heads and commenting about what they were seeing. After spending nearly 45 minutes in the store without receiving even the most basic level of customer service, I left my entire cart behind and walked out. Five minutes later, I was at Home Depot. Within minutes, three associates asked if I needed help and personally walked me to the products I was looking for. I purchased everything I needed there instead. For more than 20 years, I considered myself a loyal Lowe's customer. Today, that changed. Lowe's lost a $559.78 sale, but more importantly, they lost a customer who genuinely preferred shopping there. The contrast in customer service between the two stores could not have been more striking. I hope someone in store leadership reads this, because this wasn't about one pricing mistake. It was about feeling completely ignored by employees who simply didn't seem to care. That's something worth fixing.

I've been saving for a new washer/dryer for about a year now. I've had positive and good experiences with Appliance Warehouse before, so I went back. I had my sites set on a specific stacked unit but the salesman was easily able to convince me otherwise, in that, if one part blew the whole thing was lost. So it was easy to change my mind about buying the washer/dryer as separate units instead. We discussed the height of the stacked units and would that be a challenge for me. No big deal. The additional space I'd gain was worth standing on my toes. The entire process was not without commentary about "the Chinese taking American jobs, Ukrainians trying to scam us, and even his wife who apparently doesn't load the dishwasher correctly". Did he think he was in the company of someone with similar ideologies? I was here to buy appliances, not discuss the global impact of capitalism. And for the record, I believe every human, void of territorial boundaries, deserves the right to work, earn an income, and care for their families. Fast forward to delivery of goods. All went well until it was discovered the cables and hoses weren't going to be long enough given the desired placement. I had already put out $600 to move the plumbing for this renovation job, so yes, I wanted it where I wanted it. These specs should have been part of the sales process, those specific questions should have been addressed then-how big is the room, where are the outlets, where is the access point for the drain and inlet hoses? If I had known I needed something other than the standard sizes, I would have been prepared, as I had a very limited window of time for this project. I'm an expert in my own field and I did expect expert level inquiry from someone in the appliance field. My bad. Do you ever just want something to go your way? The delivery guys left (a trail of mud through my house along with a puddle of water from a dripping hose-but it's March in Maine and I can't exactly fault them for that-it's just one more mess for this overworked teacher to clean up) and advised me to just buy new stuff on Amazon. Ok. What? What do I need? What's the amperage and voltage needs? Will the warranty still be in effect? Will you be coming back to do the installation? Instead of making a phone call, I opted to go back to the store. While there, we reviewed the final fees, subtracted out removal fees, added the stacking fees and I requested additional credit, given that the units I had just bought days before, had now gone on sale. That took some of the sting away. But. I'm still left with two heavy stacked appliances in the middle of my 6' x 6' room that I now need to install, move, and level myself? Can I? Yes. Is it frustrating to me that I have to? Also yes. First world American problem? Indeed. So, my new cables and hoses will arrive next week...from China. In the meantime I guess I will be tripping over my tool boxes and other laundry room detritus until I can take a break from teaching my liberal college agenda, to finish the work a man said they'd do.

Weeks ago I went into Urban Garden Center on Warren Ave to get a pesticide and when I walked in,…read morethere were NO employees wearing masks. Seven employees working, no mask in sight other than the one that was covering my mouth and nose. Many employees were so close together that their arms were touching - still, no masks. I reported the business to the City of Portland, and the health inspector that called me back did let me know that he paid a visit to UGC and, again, no masks were being worn by five employees that day. I drove by a few days ago, and due to the elevation of Warren Ave in regards to where the store is placed, I was able to look inside. Lo and behold, despite Portland's health inspector paying them a visit and speaking with the manager and employees, I saw multiple employees without masks in the few seconds I was able to look in the store while driving by. If you value your health and the health of those you love, avoid this place at ALL COSTS. Support stores that care about their customers enough to wear a mask (seriously - it's not THAT hard!), give quality customer service, and of course, a store whose manager isn't aiming to work at and maintain a super-spreader location. I will never be back, and I will continue to urge everyone I know to steer clear of this establishment.

Finally, as the spring season is officially upon us, I went in looking for some larger pots to give my kids room to grow, some soil, and of course some new kids. I will say that as of my first two visits, they were just starting to set up the outdoor nursery area which looks huge. Their indoor area for plants is on the smaller side, though there are still a fair amount of things to choose from if you're not too picky on what you pick up. Prices seemed fair. The entrance had a lot of larger "fancy" ceramic/clay pots which were marked at 50% off listed price. I was told by the owner that they get them in bulk pretty regularly which is why they are able to discount them so much. I picked up a couple. The inside of the store has the more ordinary terra cotta pots. Some fancier ones, but not an extraordinary amount. There's a huge area dedicated to gardening supplies, mostly of the growing persuasion (feed, seed, pesticides, soil, etc, as well as gardening equipment) It's a cute little shop and if you're looking for fairly basic stuff this place will have it. There's a fair amount of craftsy decorative stuff in the front as well. All the people I've encountered are friendly. I'll definitely be back.
