Let me start off by typing that I have a bit of hair appt. anxiety. My locks had not seen stylist nor scissors for over a year before my store box at home dye job drove me to the doors of this establishment. For a lot of us salon visits are akin to a dental cleaning, you go in expecting to be lectured and shamed for your personal care sins, go through long periods of physical discomfort, and be thoroughly evaluated for your appearance by utter strangers who are there to "fix" you. In a world where my current mood can be affected by how high my ass is and if I have an espresso nearby, I don't feel the need to put myself through more bs. Let's start off with the fact that they have a Keurig (a hug in a mug!) My stylist was Rose. Not only is she extremely personable, there was no lecture or disparaging looks at my damaged follically challenged crown. She made me feel extremely comfortable and proceeded to make small changes within my comfort zone. I.E. -When it came to the cut, I requested a "dusting", knowing full well the uneven nature of my hair (but emotionally, I'm a sissy about cutting it off). She totally understood and styled it in a lovely curly way to hide my odd ends. I've gotten loads of complements and feel great. It is just the perfect strawberry blonde I was hoping for:)))) I will be a regular with Rose! I highly recommend her not only for her skill and warm customer service but her ability to make people feel at ease (a rare talent). This place is closing down just FYI. A few stylists have branched out and started their own gigs. This place gave me my worst ever hair experience. I absolutely hated everything about my exchanges and would never recommend my stylists. I scheduled an apt with someone (named Mag or Gad or something?) as a new customer and arranged my schedule around it and two days before, the guy texted me to cancel. I called the main number to complain and see if anyone else could handle it and got it covered by someone else named Emilie. I explained to her I had gotten a babysitter for one but had a baby I was bringing. The day before, I spent almost a full hour going back and forth in texts fueled by my stylist telling me she wasn't comfortable with me bringing my child. She went on for an entire hour about all the reasons it was a liability to her (he's an infant). I was so frustrated by her talking circles I could hardly stand it but I was so desperate I went through with the apt. I take him everywhere with me every day and it's always fine. 30 min before she texts me again asking me to push off my apt a few hours. I was already on my way to her place, with a friend coming to her salon to help me with my child per her request. I tried calling the main office to complain but no one answered. She ended up coming 45 min late while I waited at her new location and my apt ended up taking 6 hours. She was slow as molasses. My baby did just fine, it was the anxiety of her worrying about everything that was so over the top for me. I can't even believe the back and forth and flakiness of this establishment but it is horrendously run with no accountability. Awful experience. read more

My experiences here were not great. My first ever appointment there the stylist showed up late. While I waited for my tardy stylist I witnessed just lots of unprofessionalism there. They weren't rude, don't get me wrong, but lots of talking and leaving clients unattended. There was a gentleman there getting a haircut and the stylist cutting his hair kept leaving him to go hug and talk to other people that would walk by the salon or would come in and say hi. Instead of saying something to the client she'd jus disappear. I remember the look of frustration on his face. When my stylist finally showed, she was rushed and when she was brushing my hair she was rough. She didn't listen to what I wanted and did her own thing - which is fine as long as it turns out ok. Which it didn't. She left me over and over... going to chat with other stylists (while she was in the middle of doing something to my hair) and I was frustrated and annoyed. Basically I was going through the same thing that guy was. I'm a brunette who was going light and I feel like I looked more orange than any other color on the spectrum. 50 Shades of Orange. That was me. And for charging me $200+ I was expecting better quality and better service. My husband, bless his heart was being nice and said it looked fine. I never was too happy but ok. I decided to go back and get a root touch up and possibly refresh the color or make it a bit better and not so orange. Nope. Bad mistake. Even though this was another person doing my hair it still turned out awful and STILL was over $200 even though it was a root touch up. The thing that stood out the lost was the stylist complaining that she was there early doing my hair and that my hair was too long (which it's not) and that she was charging me more. Waste of money. I ended up going to another salon and getting my hair corrected. That cost me $360 but THAT was worth it. My hair is no longer ORANGE! It's a shame this place didn't work out for me. The location is cool and the salon is really awesome. They have artwork hanging on the wall that is available for purchase from local artists. Will no longer be going back. read more

After a botched highlight job Saturday at another salon (yellow and thick uneven stripes all over my brown hair), I searched all over Dallas for a salon that could fix my hair before Monday. Brennan took pity on me and squeezed me in between her Sunday clients. She color corrected my roots, added bayalage highlights to blend everything in, and threw in a mask, cut, and style for free. My hair has never looked better. It looks natural, dimensional, and beautiful, and I've gotten tons of compliments on it so far. I'm eternally grateful for her time and patience in fixing my mess! Are you ready to hear a story of damsels, danger, and intrigue? Well you better buckle up butter-cup cuz' it's about to get WILD. Wild with crazy color that is (haw, haw). My first trip to the salon, I had a miscommunication with a stylist there (who is also fabulous, but I can be very passive) and wound up walking out with hair, that though cute, really didn't suite me. I had a big event coming up in Deer Valley for Celebrity Skifest and needed my hair to get back on track for my general aesthetic. Since I love seeing what creative stylists can do, my usual approach is to come in with multiple pictures (as a guideline) and say, "have at it." So when I messed up my hair, I couldn't help but blame myself. I called the salon, explained my situation, and was told, "It's no worry! Come down and I'll fix it for you!" Stephanie fixed my hair and it. was. amazing. Something that should be noted is that these stylists are independents. Stephanie didn't have to take me in, do a rush job the next day to get me ready for an event AND comp it because I had been unsatisfied. She really did this out of her own passion for making people look fabulous. I did the same thing I had always done, showed pictures of the hair, colors and general aesthetic and what she did was amazing! 1. Color correction: 10/10 Since my style is a lot of bright colors, and I had navy and black hair, Stephanie had to do a full color correction to get the brighter colors back into my galaxy inspired do' . It took a long time, but she was very diligent, thorough and careful with the integrity of my hair. Nothing came out fried despite the extreme processing. 2. Color and blending: 10/10 What I had before was an unblended split dye of black and navy. She went through and gave me a stunning magenta color, weaving in purple and pink streaks back through the blue parts of my hair. It came out GORGEOUS. I went to my event and got tons of compliments on my hair, aesthetic and "rock n' roll nerd" look. I even made a few excellent contacts with my hair as the ice-breaker! I couldn't be happier with the color and how it turned out! 3. Cut: 10/10 So this was the thing I was most upset about when it came to what had happened previously. Color is something, since I tend to be the "use me as your canvas" type, that I can get over pretty quickly if I'm not satisfied, but length is something I can't. My hair is very dense and grows out instead of down, so when trying to grow it I can't take a lot of length off. I asked to keep my length and the longer layers, but to just thin it a little bit so it would be easier to manage. I instantly got the razor. I should have spoken up, but I sort of just trusted my direction would be heard. In the end, I had all the length at the front cut off, and it maintained it's original length in the back. I was pretty devastated, since it takes me so long to get my hair back once it's cut. However, as luck would have it, Stephanie had gone out to get extensions that day. She matched them to my hair color and put in a few tape-ins to return to length that I lost. This was beyond generous, especially after everything else she did for me, and I was incredibly grateful for it. 4. Service: 13/10 Both Stephanie and my other stylist were amazing, wonderful and attentive people. They kept me talking, laughing and really entertained during both long hair sessions. I think my other stylist still has a bit to learn (just like I have to learn about being more vocal with what I'm looking for), but they are still very talented, warm, and wonderful to sit in the chair with (I think, as a customer, being more specific is always going to be best unless you get a really experienced stylist that can work their own creativity around your own style)! Stephanie went above and beyond to make sure I was happy, even when she didn't have to! Her customer service was impeccable (even though I was comped) and her experience at infusing her own styles with her clients' is at expert levels. She has definitely earned a client for life! 13/10 would hair again! read more

I stopped going to get my hair cut after I got talked into letting my hair go natural, and growing it out. Frankly, it took me a long time to learn to love it. I had been a slave to my flat iron since the age of 14, and at 33, I was feeling a bit apprehensive. Getting your hair cut if you are a curly hair girl is TOUGH. Everywhere I went and searched, prices were outrageous. One place, supposedly renowned for its curly cuts, wanted more than 100 bucks! Uh, no thank you. Some friends suggested I go check out Deep Ellum Hair Studio. I called one day, and spoke to a guy who put me at ease. I told him I had not gotten my hair cut in over a year, and was wary of coughing up an arm and a leg for a nice, straightforward cut. I made an appointment with Jesse, and crossed my fingers. When I walked in to the place, it was super laid back. No stuffy BS here...just nice folks who do hair, and do it well. They will offer you a yummy alcoholic beverage (YAY!), and get started. I told Jesse what I was looking for, and he made some suggestions, as well as ask me questions about exactly how I wanted me hair. He was gentle, and I got through my shampooing without water dripping down the nape of my neck. The cut was very simple, and he used the styling product I brought and was used to (with no complaint). I really liked his demeanor...very sweet and humble. It's something that you just don't see that often, and I say that because I worked in salons for many years and saw a lot of ego-tripping! If you're looking for a no-frills, seriously good stylist without the high-brow "hair designer" crap, go see Jesse at DEHS. He is super sweet, will listen to you, be gentle, and have you walking out that door feeling GREAT! And... your wallet will be happier, too! read more

He spent the first 15 minutes literally just examining my hair color (which no large salon ever takes the time to do!) He communicated very clearly what we could expect from the color session, and talked me through every process along the way which I really appreciated. Beautiful, wide-open space, feels HUGE. Located on a great part of Main Street in easy walking distance of lots of little shops and cafes, etc with ample parking for $2-5 or street/meter parking if you luck out or get there on a weekday. My stylist was Meredith. She was incredibly friendly and open, very sweet. We talked about my hair (I have very difficult hair--- coarse and chemically-fried, naturally very thin, and very short) before deciding on a game plan. I gave her creative control. We chatted the whole time as she buzzed the sides, took off only the damaged ends on top and shaped the whole thing, doing a beautiful blend that came out like a disconnected faux-hawk/pixie. We touched up my bleach to even it out, then dyed it a pink with purple streaks. Each time she was very gentle and efficient with the shampooing and conditioning, and they provided warm towels. I was there about three hours and she made sure to ask if I was comfortable, if I needed a bathroom break, etc every so often. Great price for my services and I love the final result. Very happy. The staff all seemed very friendly (many came by to say hello or compliment my haircut/color) and everyone in there was eccentric--- the girl next to me was having neon green streaks put in her long black mohawk, and another girl was having the underside of her hair dyed bright blue. This is not your grandma's salon--- this is where you go if you want a funky mohawk, an undercut, a cool pompadour, etc. You come here for edgy, hip, trendy styles--- I'm sure they do the other stuff well too but this seems to be their passion. Everyone working was 'funky' in some way or another but very friendly and open, not snobby or rude to customers at all. I will absolutely be a repeat customer. read more

I couldn't say enough wonderful things about this place! My hair has been through a lot, and was pretty brassy and damaged. I had a color appointment with Joel, who was beyond friendly and welcoming. I normally don't go to salons because I always feel intimidated by them, but I felt completely at home here. Joel listened to the color I had in mind, asked me questions about my hair history, and really gave thoughtful and knowledgeable suggestions and advice. I had walked in with a light brown with silvery undertones, but after hearing Joel's advice I knew he was right that lightening my hair anymore, especially after the box dye, wasn't the best idea and may not have given us the best results. We decided to do a darker, rich brown with some of those ashy undertones. The entire process was comfortable and enjoyable. Joel was such a lovely personality to talk with, and explained everything he did so that I didn't feel like I had no idea what was going on. The color turned out so beautiful and had a lot of dimension, which is exactly what I wanted. Not only that, but my hair feels healthier than ever! He explained all the products he used and even told me where the best places are to get them, as well as recommending some good shampoos and conditioners. I did not have a bad experience, but really just totally meh and disappointing. The cut I got was okay but not what I asked for at all. I am a fan of the whole slap-dash DIY feel of the place and appreciate it. I will make my own tea from a Keurig that needs a good cleaning, and look at the dusty merchandise from local vendors. But if there's not going to be a receptionist or really any customer service, then don't charge premium prices. My stylist was 25 minutes late, which is not a big deal (I have waited longer at other places) because I get that this is an experience that is not totally predictable for every customer. But I spent less that 40 minutes in her chair. Within that 40 minute time span: I was told the exact hair cut I've had from other stylists for the past 5 years wouldn't work with my hair, 15 minutes in the next client showed up, and meanwhile the previous client was hanging in the background asking to have her color treatment washed out. My stylist did not even ask me at the end if this cut was good nor did she show my the back of my hair cut with a mirror! I specifically said that I came to this salon because it was the first salon that didn't have flat-ironed curls in every picture and told a story about how much I hate flat iron curls. Guess what this stylist finished my appointment doing? Flat iron curls. If you want to be hipster and thrown-together, go for it. If I had paid $45 for this cut, I wouldn't be complaining here. But I paid over $75 for less than an hour of this stylist's time and ended up with the most suburban boring cut ever. read more

If you're looking for a new hairdresser go see Joel at Deep Ellum Hair Studio! I looked for a stylist for over a year and a half. I went to try D.E.H.S. because they had great reviews and found Joel. Joel is the best and my search is over! I have been lightening my hair for over a year now. Going from black to blond is not easy, but Joel makes it look easy. After just a couple of sessions with Joel my hair is finally blonde-blonde (not yellow-copper bleach freyed blonde), lightening evenly and it gets softer, shinier and healthier every time I see him. The colors and tones in it are gorgeous and blend really well. The method he uses still looks great as it starts to grow out too. Joel has trimmed my hair to get as much of the dead and freyed ends off as possible and keep as much length as he can. He has never cut off more than he said he would. Joel gives me great advice on home care and products and treatments between visits that are best for me as well. (Without breaking the bank!) **** I tell every hairdresser I've ever had, "I'm really tender-headed and my hair tangles like no other when it's wet. Please don't rip out my hair when you comb through it after you wash it." In the past, I had to comb out my own hair because it hurt so bad and my hair was being ripped out in globs. Joel listened! He got through combing my wet hair with no pain and basically no breakage or loss! He even got a specific brush to get through my hair this last time.**** Joel has really great rates. I've never had any trouble talking to him about his prices. I've never been surprised at check out. The value is well worth the service! Most importantly I have always left happy. I've been doing my own hair for years and it wasn't until I started coming here, that I realized how much a good stylist can really elevate the look of one's hair. Truth be told, I don't like to stick to conventional colors or styles, so I sought out this location because of it's location in Deep Ellum and my desire to have a stylist who is open minded about pushing the envelope. I absolutely adore the stylist here who does my hair (Kat) and she has really wowed me with her technical ability and long term commitment to getting my hair back to a healthy state. I always leave the salon very happy with the results. The salon has a very eclectic decor that is exactly in step with the true vibe of Deep Ellum. There's always new, offbeat art on the walls and I just love the energy and feel about this place. Also, the music is top, notch- I'm always looking forward to hearing what they're playing because it's such a wide selection of amazing music that spans so many genres and time periods, but always cool. They use several different product lines like Verb, Amika and Oleplex, so you know that they are working with fantastic quality products. All the stylists here really seem to enjoy what they do and I always hear fun, stimulating conversations being had. I've had my hair cut and styled by Valerie a handful of times now and I have to say that she knocks it out of the park every single time. I'm definitely one of those people who brings in photos of haircuts that I'm low key self-conscious may not really suit me but her calm and assuring demeanor puts my anxious mind at ease. Valerie is a hair magician! I came in a little uncertain about cutting ~5 inches off my hair, but after I showed Valerie what I wanted, her cool confidence assured me I was making the right decision. Most of the hairdressers I've been to half-listen to what I want, then just cut it to a "standard" style that they feel is in the ballpark of what I asked for. Valerie asked me questions about what I wanted, and then DID IT PERFECTLY. I have *never* walked away with my hair looking exactly how I asked for it to be done until I sat in her chair.
