Nobody wants to leave a bad review, and no one wants to post a photo of themselves looking terrible... but this haircut was a reminder that you can't go just anywhere and get a curly haircut. I had a bob, and wanted to go shorter (to what I would describe as a really long pixie). I had a folder of inspiration images, which my stylist and I looked at together. My haircut was $55, and I feel pretty bad about how I look. When I look in the mirror, I have a lot of poorly shaped volume in front, with no hair peeking out from behind/below the ears to balance it out. I'm a huge fan of wet cutting, but it takes an experienced stylist to understand the shape, and how a cut is going to translate once it's dry. The initial haircut was also unintentionally asymmetrical: longer and fuller on one side than the other. I'm just not sure the Aveda school/Aveda method provides enough education or experience with every hair type. Yes, I could go back and ask them to fix it, but (1) I'm not sure making it shorter is going to help things, and (2) even if I had a clear vision for how to improve this cut, I'm not confident that this salon can execute it. I did a little self-trim in the mirror to correct the asymmetry -- something I was willing to do because I felt like it couldn't get any worse. It'll grow back. read more

Love going to get my hair cut and colored by Erin. I have been going to her for over two years after my previous hair stylist (at another salon) decided to stop coloring hair and a friend recommended her. She is amazing and takes her time to make sure your hair is cut how you want it and that you like it. Erin will also offer suggestions on things to do if you are unsure about what you want to do. I have never been disappointed with her suggestions. My color ( do both highlights and root touch ups) is always on point and adjusted lighter or darker for the different seasons. So, if you're in need of a cut or color or both, go see Erin as you won't be disappointed. You'll love your hair again. read more

I've been coming to this salon for over 5 years. My colorist, Sherry is amazing and always knows what looks best for my hair. I've had a few different stylists to cut my hair and all of them are fabulous. They ask what I want to do and offer constructive feedback on how it would work (or not) with my hair type, face shape, etc. The salon is clean and trendy. Didn't want to have to write this review, as I was hoping the salon would remedy the situation, but after speaking to the owner, I refuse to ever go back or recommend the salon. After having highlights done a few previous times, my last visit ended in a bust. It seems like only some of my roots were highlighted, but the color was dull, if that. I asked for my front pieces to be brighter (having had this done before) and this was not how it ended up. After trying to resolve this and make a follow up appointment, I received phone calls trying to move my appointment to different times. Michael, the owner, called me after this but immediately started saying I was only looking for a "25 minute fix", which was never said. After hearing him say I could come in for my original time, I said after all the fuss, I just wanted a refund since the highlights didn't come out, which set him off more. He continued to argue with me saying when I left the salon I said my hair looked great, which was not true, nor was he present. I asked him why he thought I said this and he said because I left a tip... I explained I'd leave a tip no matter what because the stylist performed a service. He would go awhile without saying anything at all and I had to ask if he was still there. He proceeded to argue with me about how I received a 45 minute haircut, which in reality was a trim with barely an inch taken off that took less than 20 minutes (the whole highlighting process took over 3 hours, which is why by the styling part I kept checking my phone for the time). Im not sure why he was arguing with me when he wasn't present and he immediately came off aggressive instead of just listening to why I wasn't happy. By this point, in disbelief, I said I couldn't believe he was arguing with me, especially since he wasn't there, in which he replied "I can't believe you're arguing with ME". I was also misquoted for my hair trim, in which he denied I ever received that price (which again, he was not present for, nor would I have paid that much for a trim that I usually do myself). Needless to say his rude, aggressive attitude lost his stylist and salon a customer. Everything I said over the phone, he replied with a rude or untrue remark, so I won't be surprised if he comments with something false. I attached a pic of my hair afterwards. KELLEY-DEE is amazing!!! I usually don't get my hair cut often because I LOVE it long and I'm always scared someone will ruin it. She did not disappoint! She listened to everything I asked for and made me feel so comfortable. She told me every single product she put in my hair and explained why. My hair feels so healthy and my layers are perfect. It looks good curled or straight. I will most definitely be back sooner than my typical 2 years. I went here for color only. I had Shelley, who has been with MR for years and is the manager. She was nice enough but my color was not good. I have about a level one hair color (darkest) and she probably went with a three because my hair turned out with a reddish color instead of almost black. I told another hairdresser this when I went for a keratin and he said that Aveda color was not the greatest in his opinion. It did not do a good job of covering my gray, which is the purpose of my hair color. Will not be going back. Also, before you leave, they want to sign you up for your next appointment and make you fill out paperwork with all your contact info, including address. An assistant came to my chair and handed me a clipboard and wanted to know when to book my next appt and said I could cancel later if needed. A little tacky. read more

I am fairly new to Dallas and have a co-worker with great hair. Typically I won't go anywhere in a new city without some sort of referral. I was told to check out Kelly. I moved from abroad so no one had touched my hair for a minute. She rocked it. Perfect cut and touched up color exactly as I needed. Love this girl, laid back, knows what she is doing 100%, hears you and does it. I couldn't be happier with the results. I will continue to go to her for sure. Added bonus: Aveda salon. I wasnt happy with my experience with this salon unfortunately. I was a first time client and gave this salon multiple opportunities to keep me. However, in the end, I realized this place wasn't for me. I had 2 services, a cut and balayage, below are my experiences, it is lengthy but I want to be clear about what transpired. My cut service: I had asked for long layers throughout my hair and brought a photo. My hair is on the thinner side (not super thin and I have a lot of hair) but I have waist length hair and I normally get layers for movement and body. The cut was okay, it wasnt bad. But the ends were cut bluntly and not blended/texturized well. So when my hair is over my shoulder it doesnt lay nicely. Also my stylist put a few layers framing my face and that was it, she didn't touch the rest of my hair. I had asked her at the end of the service if she could put some more layers in my hair, but my hair still didnt looked like she added any. She said she didnt want to put more layers in my hair, because they would thin out my hair and look like there were "gaps" in it. Which confused me. Since my hair didnt look bad, I went ahead with my color appointment and gave them the benefit of the doubt. My color service: I consulted with the same stylist twice, including photos, who assured me I could get the result I was looking for, which was more dramatic than what I had. I wanted more lights of whiter blonde in my mostly golden and faded strawberry blonde hair. I wanted it all incorporated together with mostly a whiter blonde. I'm easy going and I understand that results arent perfect, which I am okay with. But she assured me that we would get really close. I started with a golden blonde hair, the stylist advised me to dye my roots at home (red) so she could incorporate that color into my hair, which I did and trusted her vision. I was in the chair for 4 hours and my hair barely had any change. I slept on it to be sure, but the next morning, even in sunlight, my hair looked the same as if I had not had it done. I brought it the attention of the manager who was super kind, but assured me it could be corrected (I even sent the manager before and after photos too). She sat me with the same stylist who this time highlighted my hair, including teasing my roots which I was not happy about but I let it slide because I was hoping this result would be better. Now there is a price difference between highlighting and bayalage, they did provide me with what they kept referring to as "complimentary conditioning treatments" but it was clear these were meant to make up the difference in cost. In the end my hair was a bit lighter but not even close to what I wanted. I also wanted that heavy dimension that comes with the bayalage technique and my hair just looks more ombre with subtle transitions, which I could have achieved at home. Overall, they were nice but after $300 for both services, I definitely do not feel I got my monies worth. I really tried to work with them, but I am just not happy. read more

After 5 years of getting my hair highlighted by Shelley, there's no way I'd go anywhere else - I actually followed her from the Mockingbird salon. I learned my lesson the hard way when I first moved to Dallas and had miserable experiences at some less expensive salons. Shelley is the queen of highlights (especially blonde), and she also manages the salon very well. She thoroughly understands how to treat different hair types (ie, fine, naturally blonde hair does NOT go under heat while processing highlights!). The salon itself is very clean, and very polished. They carry all Aveda products, including Aveda's cosmetic line and they just recently (within the past year or so?) added an esthetician whom I have yet to try. Not once in 5 years have I had any scheduling snafu, albeit occasionally they'll run a bit behind due to a previous client being late, but when they're running more than slightly behind, I've gotten a phone call to let me know. Water, lemonade, or tea are served (I keep telling Shelley they need something "stronger" for those really stressful days, but no luck!) and during the shampoo, you get an arm massage that has rarely been anything short of blissful. After a short complimentary touch up of your makeup with some of the Aveda product line, you feel totally pampered. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. read more

I heard about this salon through fellow Yelper Erin M.'s post about being a model for the continued learning course she is taking at this salon, needing a haircut probably at least two months ago it sounded like a great idea. I walked in and it was like getting my hair cut in the middle of the class...where everyone gathered around me and they talk about me like I wasn't there. It was weird at first but just focused on a free haircut that I do badly needed. They were all really nice and glad my hair was awful so they could fix it. I had more cut off than I originally wanted but it was to make it more healthy and I agree that it feels much, much better than it did. I liked Erin M so much that I will probably be back to the salon she actually works at (another MIchael Raymond) to get my hair dyed. I have been going here for over one year. I have loved every one of my stylists. I chose to give this salon a rating of a two because of the way the management/rules apply to the stylists and thus us as customers. I have already gone through three stylists in one year. Not because I wanted to switch but because they all quit. Mangement really does treat many of the stylists horribly (I've seen first hand) and expect them to finish a FULL highlight in the same amount of time as a partial. That is sooooo crazy! Can I not request a quality highlight? Good God I'm the one paying for it! When Micheal or Raymond (I have no idea who is who) walk in the salon the stylists are visible shaking. That is so nuts!!! I hate it for them. I'm considering switching just because I'm sick of the high turnover rate and hate watching people be verbally and mentally abused. Don't go here if you are sensitive to others' feelings and want to see the same stylist long term. Perhaps the salon manager Shelley is the only one who is a gaurantee for long term. She's good but expensive. Obviously, she does not experience the same type of abuse as the other stylists so she's a safe choice. Although, it's possible that she may cause some of the grief for the newer stylists as well. :( read more

I am a wavy-to curly head of hair. Somewhat coarse, think Katherine Hepburn. I have had a horrible time finding someone in Dallas to cut my hair properly, because the city is inundated with stylist trained to cut the minions of women wanting to look like Jennifer Aniston. FINALLY I found Karlie at this salon. She cut my hair correctly, perfectly actually. She used scissors-- not the texturizing type, and gave me a haircut I can wake up in and leave the house with a comb thru-- i.e. not a ton of styling product and un-reproducable blowout. And as a bonus, she didn't push a bunch of Aveda product on me, which frankly while it smells lovely, it always dries out my hair. The environment is clean, not pretentious and the staff is tres courteous. Karlie- you are the best! read more

Overpriced. I continued to go monthly for about a year but slowly came to realize the haircuts I was getting were average and the people tended to be a bit rude. You can certainly do much better for the price. Also, the signs in the waiting area guilting customers into buying their marked-up products were strange, like asking for charity. read more

I have been getting my hair cut and colored here at the Preston location for years, and have always been happy with the experience. The staff has always been friendly, and I've been pleased with the stylists that I've worked with. Daniel has been my stylist for some time, and he is excellent - I've also worked with Kelly and she is great too. I also think the little extra perks (hair wash and scalp massage, hand and arm massage, and complimentary beverages) are very relaxing, and a nice added touch. read more

I just went into this salon today for the first time to get my blonde hair highlighted. i was scheduled with shelly and was told she was an expert--they were right! she did SUCH an amazing job on my hair. I've been getting highlights for many years now and i have never experienced better service. she was quick and she made my hair look beautiful. her prices are a little steep but WORTH IT. stephanie also gave me a blowout and i was amazed at how good my normally thick, dry hair looked by just using a blowdryer and a roundbrush (and a couple of aveda products). she was also very friendly and made me feel so comfortable. OH and they also give hand/arm massages! i had an amazing experience at this salon and although i (and my boyfriend...) were thinking it was too expensive...we soon realized that their services are worth it. you get what you pay for! i will be back! read more

Scheduled appt for woman's haircut with Daniel, based on good reviews on Yelp. Daniel was very nice, but shortly after I detailed for him how I wanted him to cut my hair, he fessed that he did not have enough experience to cut my short style. He handed me over to Jeremy, who had moved here recently from OOT. Jeremy boasted of 29 years experience, and seemed to understand and accept my instruction. I knew what I wanted, and how to execute the cut, even provided a detailed multi-view drawing! After the shampoo, Daniel says, "I am going to take a creative approach to this, rather than structured." This contradicted my instructions, so I should have stopped him. My bad. He proceeded, and shocked me when he proceeded to "cut" my hair with electric sheep shears!!! Literally, he completed 80% of the cut with the hand held buzzy sheer like they use to take off hair from a poodle. I went there for a hairCUT not a hairBUZZ. He called this "sculpting." He also dried my hair before cutting, specifically against my instruction. He ignored me when I asked for a mirror, so when I had the attention of the trainee looking on, I asked again for the mirror, stood up and looked at it in the back. OMG, what is this? I asked a few questions,and reminded him that I opened my discussion with him by stating "I know what I want, and how I want you to execute the cut because I have had it done many times before." He replied defensively, then he told me that I "should allow more creativity when I get my hair cut" Translation: "I am dismissing your instruction, your clear, unambiguous directives about what you want me to do. Instead, dear client, you should yield submissively to my 29 years of experience and just surrender to my telling YOU how your hair should be cut." I remained unflappable, stood up and said, "we are done." I paid, but asked for the manager. While I waited for a protracted period of time, "Shelly," kept me on hold while she was apparently briefed by Jeremy. Shelly was completely insensitive to my account of what occurred, denying my dissatisfaction with Jeremy's technique and dismissal of my instructions. She did offer to give me my $55 back, which I accepted. I was so disappointed. My dog pulled his ears over his eyes when I walked in! Or so it felt to me. Why are hair stylists deaf and dismissive? It is easier to find a financial planner! I have lived under my hair 24-7 all of my life. I know my hair better than anyone. Its my hair, my money. Jeremy, and Michael Raymond, for that matter, are not my stylists. The salon was uber noisy, and the intense, carcinogenic fumes from ammonia were deafening too. I was referred to Carli by a coworker. My hair is quite short and It was badly in need of attention to correct poor texturing. Carli listened to my concerns and spent time addressing them with an excellent haircut. She consulted with me on products and styling but I have to say the precision with which she cut my hair was the most impressive. I've paid the same price and gotten buzzed, washed and out the salon in 15 minutes. Carli's time and attention to detail shows. Several people today have commented on my hair so I wanted to post this review to thank Carli and tell anyone interested in trying the salon to be sure to ask for her. i have, for a long time, been very picky about my hair. it took me a while to find a stylist i trusted and was excited about here in dallas. i finally settled on a stylist at salon pompeo a couple of years ago. she didn't do anything that blew my mind... but she was consistent and always did a good job. (i have really curly hair, and a lot of it... it's often difficult to find someone who knows what to do with that). then i became friends with carli outside of the salon and knew several friends who went to her. i decided to try her out because all my friends' hair looked great. but i warned her ahead of time that i'm super picky about my hair, and even though we're friends... if i didn't love it... i would probably go back to pompeo. well... based on my rating, you can probably imagine i didn't go back to pompeo. carli has consistently given me the best haircuts i've ever had (and the five friends i've referred to her have all said the same and are also now long-term clients). every time i leave the salon, it looks fantastic... and she's the first stylist i've ever felt comfortable saying, "i trust you... do what you think would look best" i HIGHLY recommend michael raymond (i really like everyone i've met at the salon... and i've met almost everyone). it's a fantastic salon... and when you call, ask for carli. if you can't get in with carli, ask for stephanie. she's great, too. read more
