John is knowledgeable in different types of cuts, colors, and types of hair, so if you're unsure whether he will know how to deal with your hair, don't be -- HE WILL KNOW! Not only that, his prices are cheaper than others. I've scoured Google and Yelp for a few days and decided that I absolutely wanted to go with him because he had all good reviews, shows his cuts and styles on Instagram, and is booked for months out. Because of this, it's best to schedule a haircut online with him -- you'll be able to find last-minute openings. John is patient, knowledgeable, and kind. He's there to give you a haircut, but he's also there to spread some knowledge. He showed me how he was cutting my hair and why he was doing it. His consultation was also very helpful, especially because I didn't know anything about hair and how to style it. I wanted to change the way my hair looked in both style and color, and John was there to give feedback and what he thought was in my best interest. I felt like he should have charged for his consultation because he spent a GOOD amount of time providing advice and feedback, time that's worth money, especially when I was his last client for the day and it was getting late. Because he didn't charge extra for consultation, I provided a good tip. What I wish beforehand, which isn't really John's fault, is how to enter the building. It was late, so the door was locked -- luckily, there was someone who let me in. If you ever encounter this situation, just text John and he'll come open the door for you! Overall, I believe I am a permanent client of John's. My husband loves my hair and believes that John did a really good job, especially for the price you're paying. Absolutely insane. I come in for a 3o'clock, and am left with my hair unwashed while the owner refuses to give me a clear yes or no on what I can/cannot do with my hair currently. After the eventual wash, he left me to style my own hair while he went and talked to another guest right beside me. While writing this review he looks at my phone and comments. This is crazy, and what I was left with was nothing even remotely close to what I had asked for in the picture. Which once again, another factor of him refusing to give a yes or no. The only thing we were clear on in the end is that the cut and style were sub-par, and that I did NOT want to pay. read more

John is the best hair stylist I've ever been to. I've had my hair cut at fancy salons a few times before in San Diego, San Francisco, and even Japan but John blew me out of the water with his skills. A day before I had my appointment his assistant texted me asking me to send pictures of the hairstyle I wanted - I mean, who does that? A perfectionist, that's who! He spent a good 1.5 - 2hrs on my hair, educating me on which shampoos and styling products to use to get my hair looking amazing everyday (it's been two weeks and my hair continues to looks and feel better than it ever has). He is also just super easy and fun to talk to, I really enjoyed his carefree personality but his super artist's touch to hair. Highly highly recommend him; his phone went off multiple times during our appointment so I imagine a good chunk of people have already caught on that he's an amazing hair stylist. I do not recommend going to Jazz Koen. She claimed to know how to do a perm but during the process she kept saying racial digs at my hair since I am of Latino-indigenous decent. First, she put in the wrong product just for 20 minutes to pass & realize she messed up. Second, she had to go ask another specialist what to use in my hair. Third, before I even started the process I asked her how long it would last and told me between 4-6 month but the poorly done perm only lasted 3 weeks. I also had to reschedule cause her mother kept needing to go the emergency room when it was time for my appointment. I can now understand why her husband divorced her and why she had to move back in with her mother. I do not recommend her terrible services and will be telling all my friends to avoid her. read more

Long overdue review but I got a women's cut from John that far exceeded my expectations. I had 14 inches of hair chopped off and it was growing out to an awkward length and needed A LOT of texture and layers added-- but I also wanted to keep it as long and thick as possible. John definitely delivered and impressed me. You can tell he knows what he's doing and he even teaches you a thing or two. We did end up cutting two inches off but it was worth the snip when I saw how voluminous my hair was and the life he added back to it. Y'all, my hair was FLAT and BORING. He removed all the bulk that was making my hair flat yet still managed to keep my hair thick. Tbh I don't really know what he did but he gave me a huge confidence boost after he was finished and I was satisfied with his work! I will say that he is definitely on the pricier side. My appointment lasted for a whole two hours and this included a cut, wash (he lathered my hair with all different types of products), blow-dry and style and it was ~$75. I was expecting it be significantly cheaper but I felt the price was justified bc he did such an amazing job and spent so much time on me and you DEFINITELY get what you pay for. read more
