A few weeks ago, after reading the reviews and having been familiar with the Frederic Fekkai salons, I came for a 1" trim to my long-time, blunt-cut, medium-length (3 inches below the chin), slightly angled bob, beveled a bit underneath at the nape. It was quickly dried and styled in center or side parts, with lots of volume, lift and swing. Elegant and easy. Derek said he couldn't understand me. I should have left immediately. What I have now is an inexplicable cut, 2-5 " off, barely chin length, huge amounts of hair removed, wispy layers everywhere, and texturizing. He has activated a mass of waves and curls never seen before. From the front, the shape is a cartoonish wide diamond. From the sides, a fat wedge. This is the opposite of what is required for copious, European, fine, porous hair with a nape curl and minimal wave. Derek basically has created a White girl Afro. He somehow dried it beautifully, disguising the weird architectural structure by using a tiny brush on myriad narrow strands, drying them straight, and contorting them via elaborate manual sculpting techniques, product and nearly an hour of work. Maybe he planned to do twice-weekly blowdries on it. I have spent many days and dollars elsewhere experimenting with product, techniques and professional advice while attempting to cope. Derek pleasantly refunded the charges and apologized for the "inconvenience." This is far worse than inconvenient. read more

I found Derek here and after reading the reviews and more about his training booked an appointment. He spent a lot of time just talking with me about my hair and looking at the previous cut to figure out how to get the best outcome. I did not have a style in mind, just wanted to be able to wear my hair natural if I wanted to without it looking like a mess. I really appreciated the extra consultation time since it was my first appointment with him. Once the cut began, he was so thorough and you could tell the man had skills! He styled it, so he could make sure the cut did what we wanted and touched it up in places that needed extra trimming. I love it! For years, I have been asking for a cut that will accommodate my coily, curly hair and no one could do it until now. I am a fan! read more

Superb artist. Lovely human being. Absolutely perfect bob. I cannot say enough good things about Derek after my first visit today. I have wanted for so, so many years to get the perfect bob in Dallas, and had given up, tired of wasting money, figuring that at least with Supercuts I could get a tolerable cut. But after my nice Supercuts lady left her job, and because I have a big meeting coming up, I thought: "Maybe splurge and try one more person?" Holy cow was this expensive haircut worth every penny! What a difference! Precision! Artistry! Real shaping! And I have fine hair with cowlicks which even high end stylists in the past have taken a while to figure out. Not Derek. He studied my hair, took the time to really find out what I wanted, and then was meticulous in getting it perfect. And it IS perfect! So many other places focus on color and bells and whistles, and I am sure he does that, too, and superbly. But if you want the real skill -- no cover up or fancy styling, but a perfectly shaped cut that lies "just so" on its own because of the cut itself, Derek's your guy. And the woman who makes the appointments is also super nice. I had a crisis and needed to reschedule, and she was so kind and accommodating, as was Derek. Although he is very friendly, he is not a super chatty guy -- he focuses on his art. So if you want lots of chatter, this is not the place. But there is a kindness and relaxed feeling where you just feel like you are in the very best hands. And even though he "fit me in," I never felt rushed or tense. Derek is just. So. Professional. And I am so grateful to get a chic Parisian look, magazine-ready -- and ready for my conference! read more

WAY too expensive for what it is. I liked the cut but the color had added charges I wasn't expecting to tone it to the blonde I wanted. Also I'm clearly younger (23) than their usual clientele and felt the staff overlooked me / I was wasting their time. My hair cut with Derek was amazing. He really understands the middle eastern hair type... thick and wavy/curly. He consults based off your hair and what fits your hair. He really customizes to you. Even when I thought I was done and he blow dried my hair, he still went back in and perfected any little details with his scissors. I know it's been over a year since I visited Derek and I thought long and hard if I should even write anything. I am so surprised to not read one single "less than 5 stars" review, I have no idea why I was the odd one. We moved to Dallas last year from out of state and I googled hairdressers in the metro area and D. was one of the businesses that popped up with stellar reviews and beautiful pictures of work. I could not find any booking tool, which I think in this day of age is weird for hairstylists or anyone in the beauty industry to not have, but ok, that's completely minor and not a big deal. I texted him and it literally took us 5 days to go back and forth and figure out what time he has availability. He also asked me to send him picture of my hair, which I did, then he asked to send another one, so I did, I liked that, so he can be prepared and have a frame of reference what the first time client's hair looks like and the color he would need to have ready (at least that's what I thought). I came in for my appointment and Derek said yeah I don't have almost any clients that have darker, brown/red color like I do. I was stunned, I thought he was about to send me out and that'd be it. He did say he has one client who does "Coke" looking color that could come fairly close to what I have and I said ok, the big deal is to cover my gray roots that needed retouch bad so I'll take whatever he's got since I am already there and in the chair. What I couldn't understand was why would he ask me to send him pictures of my hair in advance and still keep the appointment when clearly he didn't have what I was looking for. Then I proceeded to wait for the color to stick and another person was being done in the meantime (which I never liked, my hairdressers in Europe used to do that and it always felt rushed for both myself and the other person), but ok, also not that big of a deal. Then this random lady shows up and goes You ready? I am like For what? (confused who she is and what's going on), it was hair washing. Now Derek shows back up, we are back in the chair and he asks if I am going to blow dry my hair myself!! I have never heard that anywhere in my life aside for my previous stylist not blow drying hair during covid shutdowns to minimize spreading particles in the air. I started giggling and said People actually do that?! and he told me that yeah they go in the back room and use the blow dryer and brushes and do it themselves. Why on Earth would I go to a professional for a hair work and blow dry my hair myself?! Anyway, that was so weird. The cut was too short, I didn't like it at all, the color was what it was, it looked blah and lifeless, but since that was all I could get, I was just pleased that my grays were covered. I did not like his overall vibe, some stuff he said felt a little judgy and kind of snotty, the whole thing was not a good experience at all. I was glad he didn't ask me anything about booking next appointment so I don't have to feel bad about saying no. I haven't had great experience with hairstylists in Dallas since I moved here 7 years ago. Derek listened and told me what the plan was before we started after a consultation. my hair came out perfectly. I couldn't be happier with the results.
