Needed some herbs for tea & wanted to drop in quickly. I did forget my reusable shopping bag but purchased one at checkout. I went on a Saturday. This location opened at 8 am & I arrived shortly after this time. The place was quiet, other than workers passing by and greeting each other as they prepared for the day. It appeared to be tidy and well organized. I even took a quick glimpse at their beauty and some oral hygiene items during my visit. I will return to purchase some natural toothpaste & natural soaps I found today. The herbs and teas were all self serve & the clean scoops they provide for each use is nice. The area also has hand sanitizer and pens to write the names and codes for each selection. This also allows for a smooth checkout experience. I know this place has been open for many years, and I also know that I never stepped foot inside of it until last week. Why is that? I guess in my mind it always seemed out of my league. I love organic food but it's terribly expensive. I take supplements but it's much cheaper at Costco. After walking through the aisles of Whole Foods one day last year and almost having a heart attack, I did not want to have the same experience with Deep Roots Market, and so I never went inside And then last week my friend Bob who lives in Fisher Park, suggested we take a walk to Deep roots because he was wanting you to have breakfast there. That sounded interesting, so I tagged along. We had a beautiful walk through Fisher Park and ended up at the Deep Roots by Eugene Street. The parking lot was large, the street appeal was definitely there! and a welcoming staff greeted us as we entered. I took a look at a few of the prices and clutched my pearls but tried to remember I was not here to buy groceries but to join Bob for breakfast. We each had a burrito stuffed with egg and beans and something to drink. I did not notice how much it all cost, but seeing how much everything else was costing in the store I'm sure it was not a cheap breakfast. Bob treated me. It was healthy. It was tasty and the company was lovely. I should have walked around the store more to get a better idea of what they have to offer and how much they cost, but after I walked over to the bakery area and saw the prices, I knew this was not the place for me. I hate to poo poo this place because for a certain segment of our community, this is a terrific establishment to visit. Centrally located, magnificent produce and foods, every supplement and vitamin you can think of, lovely welcoming staff and if you can afford the prices, you're getting top-notch stuff. Unfortunately, that's not how I roll. So, Bob and I have a wonderful breakfast since Deep Roots offers nice areas to sit and have a bite to eat both inside and outside. I enjoyed being in a new place. I was happy I finally walked through the door and I will even say that I will return on my own sometime to give it a second chance to see if there's anything I can afford or want to spend money on. In the meantime, Deep Roots must be doing very well without me because they have been on Eugene Streets for many years now. So somebody's going in there and loving it and spending that money! We are all struggling financially in general these days with the exorbitant prices of everything and so I will give Deep Roots a little bit of a break, but it's just not for me... This was such a cute little market. I came by here to pick up snacks with my family and some grapefruit juice to make Paloma's with later. They have so much fresh fruit and foods to pick from. We had a little bit of a sweet tooth when we came in and checked out their chocolate bars. They had some pretty neat ones. We settled on a coffee bean one to try. Definitely make sure to read the labels on the chocolate bars for allergies! My brother is allergic to all kinds of nuts and many of them states they contain them in it. The establishment also has a seating area outside if you want to grab snacks and eat outside and enjoy the weather! I went in to this local market looking for a sweet potato syrup. The locally made syrup is great in lattes and is used at a local coffee shop that I frequent. Finding the syrup was super easy and the price was reasonable. I plan to return to this location to see what other locally made or grown options are available for customers. read more

Prices are somewhat higher, given its independent status and higher quality/organic items. Love this local treasure! Community co-ops are hard to find these days, so I was overjoyed when I found one (relatively) close to my house. Prices were as expected (the price on my bulk dried fruit was even lower than expected). They had some great sales, plus I snagged an in-store coupon for my frozen okra. Didn't have time to try the hot bar, but it smelled divine. Will definitely try it next time. I plan on coming back here regularly, & also on buying an (optional) Co-op membership, for even more savings, & because I love the idea of community-owned business. I love coming here! I love how everything is fresher and healthier than most grocery stores. With that being said, it is more expensive. Everything seems to be organized. Every time I go in there, they're always friendly. They even donate to my back to school events and give away to the homeless. They have a co-op program which might be worth looking into if you plan of shopping here with any regularity, but I do not see any particularly compelling reason to shop here often. It's basically like a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's aside of the co-op offer. They do have a nice selection of loose teas, which I did get the one pictured in this review. Beyond that, nothing really blew me away. Also be careful to check your receipt before you leave! We got 3 individual cans of beer off the clearance section, and one of them accidentally rang up as a whole case! They refunded us the difference, but that would have really sucked if we didn't catch that before leaving the parking lot. They do have a free EV charger in the parking lot, so that's good. read more

So it took eight years of living in Greensboro and moving downtown to finally enter Deep Roots. Deep Roots is not inexpensive but the food quality is top notch. So many great, fresh, local choices, a hot bar, and many other options. As a member, I like that I can round up for charity and that there is the LIME program to ensure everyone can afford to feed themselves and their family. The folks are so friendly and helpful. At the end of each year members get a dividend on any profits based on their spending and you can sell your shares at any time. Membership is not required but there are nice monthly member sales and lots of other opportunities to save. read more

Wanted something different for lunch today, wanted to eat outside and am watching my carbs, so I decided to see what Deep Roots had. I've made my own salad lunch with both a small container of egg salad and a small container of chicken salad. The egg salad has both mayonnaise and mustard, which I like as well as noticeable chucks of egg...very tasty. They have also added red onion which I like. They chicken salad is equally tasty and consists of shredded chicken, a good mouth feel to it, with Mayo and grapes. It is a bit sweeter than I like but still tasty. Rounded out the meal with a diet Mexicali soda...first time to have it and i prefer the taster, frankly to Diet Coke. If you are in the area, you should give it a try. read more

White older working lady. Snapped at me when I approached her looking for green tea. She ignored my question and attacked me about TeeDoe, my registered service dog, after showing he was a service dog and his vest, she finally got up from here seat in isle and readjusted her attitude to be nicer. Why? Why did she make me feel so bad? It doesn't matter how many ppl come in with their dogs. If the customer has a visible service tag and visible service vest. Deep Roots needs to Do Better. This is the place if you're looking for an ethical business that supports the community and is a welcome alternative to the soul-sucking experience that is Whole Foods (I expect that one day WF will just have robots working as they seek to get rid of any opportunities for human interaction.) This place has an old-school hippie vibe and reminds me of what Whole Foods once was. A lot of things seemed to be on the honor system, e.g., coffee. This is a small place. This adorable co-op is one of my favorite spots in Greensboro! They offer lots of locally sourced produce, organic frozen meals, natural supplements, wine/beer, deli items, and so much more. The bakery section is also incredible and they have several desserts made with dietary restrictions in mind. They have a huge bulk spice selection (perfect for when you need a dash of that *one* exotic spice for a recipe but will likely never use that spice again). Staff members are super friendly (shout out to my man, Doug!) and will help you find whatever you need. Wow, first time in their new location, and I'm very impressed - the old place on Spring Garden Street was a little worn, a little tired looking after 30+ years. This shiny, new place is spacious, bright, and loaded with organic produce, spices & herbs, bulk food items (nuts, etc), canned goods, extensive vegan choices in prepared food items, breakfast biscuits, and wraps, and bakery items. This is a local food co-op offering local, seasonal food items, organic and natural food and health supplements, and vegan items - thus it is not an inexpensive place to shop - in fact, almost every thing is pricey to OMG pricey. There are many hard to find items here, and there is always a place for businesses that offer fresh, healthy choices in food items - just know that there is a price to pay for that, and there are other sources in the area, especially for produce, bakery, and prepared food items that are not as expensive, and just as good, and just healthy. read more

Deep Roots is either your thing or it's not. If you're into local and organic you're going to love this place! It's a very nice, clean, enjoyable place to shop and peruse their unique offerings. The quality of products seems the consistently be excellent. But the prices are up there. Probably in line with Whole Foods and perhaps more expensive than Earth Fare. I should probably eat more local and organic food, but given that I don't, this is not a place I would shop, hence the three stars. read more

Deep Roots continues to have the best salad and hot bar around. The food is so fresh and you can tell they prepare everything from scratch. All items always taste homemade, and I honestly can't think of a place that you can get food from that tastes any more pure. Today I stopped in around 5:30pm and got some food off the bar. The boneless grilled chicken thighs had a perfect grilled flavor and were tender. The salmon was good, and it had no fishy flavor. It was a little bland, but it didn't bother me. The sautéed vegetables and cabbage was so incredibly fresh! They lacked salt but I just added some. The roasted baby carrots with whole grain mustard were amazing! They had a slight sweet flavor too. I wish I had gotten more, they didn't look that great when I was there... So don't always judge something by its looks! The stuffed grape leaves were the best ever. The fruit on the salad bar is always superb and in great condition (I can't stand places that put out underripe fruit). They had a wonderful assortment of salad toppings. You know how at most places, especially some hot bars (like Whole Foods) everything kind of tastes the same? Like it was mass produced or something? Deep Roots is the complete opposite! Everything has its own flavor profile and I can tell that the chefs prepared it with care. I always forget about Deep Roots. I really wish they would have moved towards my side of town, instead of their current location on the edge of downtown. Or, I wish they'd open a location near Jamestown. So considering this place is something like less than a mile from my apartment and totally within a 15 minute walking distance I had to go and figure out why I hear about it every once in a while. The pros: The location is probably the only grocery store downtown. That's a huge plus as there is currently a food desert here. They have a program for families that may not be able to afford their groceries. They have a coop program with a college discount. The location is very clean, like crazy clean. They definitely emphasize on being local and sustainable. The cons: It's a little small and cramped; also they don't have a lot of variety. They also don't really have a floral/plant section. The prices: I'm an avid Whole Foods shopper and some of the prices here are even higher. For example: Driscoll strawberries 1 lb are $3.99 at Whole Foods, if I'm not mistaken they were slightly higher here for some reason. Would i go back? Yeah probably, but overall not as often as I was expecting. read more

This place was amazing! We had lots of the small bites, including the salads, cornbread and soups. The flavors were really fantastic and fresh tasting. We ended with a pumpkin galette that blew us away. We will be coming back to enjoy the bowls. We paired this with Starlight MEAD, locally made Mead and it was a truly unique experience. Did you run out of your local produce while at the farmers market mid week? Then stop by deep roots. Most of their products are from local farmers in the area. They also have some great organic food products. Be prepped to buy a higher price than you would at other local stores. The hot food bar is amazing. The is sufficient flavour and does not taste like it is filled with an overwhelming amount of salt. The coffee/ cappuccino bar is pretty great too. Everything at Deep Roots amazes me. The salad bar is stunningly fresh and full of variety. The chicken salad is tremendously good. The staff is super friendly and all though I do not have food allergies, I see them patiently advising and working with other Deep Roots customers to ensure they leave with exactly what they need. So glad this place exists! We make the trip from Winston Salem whenever we cannot face the lack of organic stock at Whole Foods. I especially appreciate the bulk nuts and spices-- way better quality than the giant conglomerate! As far as deli, Their mock chicken salad is another draw, and finally the chocolate chip cookies are just to die for. Really great little health food store if you can get around all the construction constantly being done on the streets nearby. Several very low sugar cookies and snacks are available which is a big deal for a diabetic. Very clean and organized inside. read more
