I have two small dogs, and this vet clinic is where we regularly take them. The staff is very welcoming and quick to help, and the building is kept very clean. From sudden upset stomachs to regular checkups, even to getting our youngest one spayed, they always handle situations professionally and make sure your pets are healthy. We have also boarded our dogs there for the weekend when we needed to go on a trip, and they always get nail trims and the option of baths or other services. On May 31, I adopted a 5+ year old dog from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, Flapjack (originally named Jack), who had a history of biting; his last two adopters returned him in less than 24 hours of adopting him because he bit them, and for general aggression. Sure enough, within 24 hours of my adopting him, he bit me once, my boyfriend twice, and even my other dog, Hambone, once; he broke skin twice. He would also snap very randomly and get very tense and side-eye us with his ears back and his neck craning forward. It made me anxious to even be in my own home, and I was absolutely thinking about surrendering Flapjack back, but I still wanted to do my due diligence. I thought I was way in over my head and was desperate to find a behaviorist that I didn't have to wait 3+ weeks to see. Thankfully, the shelter referred me to Deepwood Canine Consultants and gave me Randy's number. I made the appointment on Monday the 4th and he was able to see me on Wednesday the 6th--every other place, the earliest I was able to see them was the 21st, and it was going to cost me $400+ for a session at those places. Randy actually came to my home, which was nice. Flapjack seemed to have an issue of being territorial, and at neutral sites (such as outdoors or at the shelter), he doesn't seem to exhibit the same behaviors as he does at home. Randy was incredibly patient, kind, and just very confident (not in an arrogant way, but in a strong, silent way) and it just made us feel all the more reassured. My boyfriend and I were in complete awe of Randy's competence and knowledge for hours after the training session, and he gave us great confidence regarding learning to control Flapjack's behavior. Randy answered any and all questions I had, and he explained everything in-depth. And our in-home behavior consultation--which lasted around 2 hours--was $200! Easily less than half the cost of other places. Randy's methods and exercises rely on simple but effective principles: 1) A dog will not want to waste energy in doing something that yields no results; 2) A dog must understand that you are his master and that what you giveth, you can taketh away; and 3) all the principles of classical and operant conditioning/behaviorism in general, a la Pavlov and Wolpe regarding reinforcement and desensitization/flooding. Check out my videos to see where Flapjack was at the beginning of our "flooding" exercise (purposely provoking him to get him to bite us, while we, in turn, don't react to the bite, letting him learn that biting is ineffective in getting what he wants, i.e. ceasing of petting) vs. where he ended up at the end of our exercise. I am fairly certain that Flapjack suffered some physical abuse and has thus learned to hate physical touch. I also don't think he was socialized at all. We were told that his first owner passed away and Flapjack was found abandoned in the yard for at least a couple days. It's purely speculation, but I'm guessing that this first owner lived alone with no other dogs and possibly had some misanthropic tendencies himself. I'm not sure I believe that any dogs are inherently bad; it's all in how they were raised. Not to stroke with a broad brush, but Randy makes me believe that all dogs are workable; it's all about how much time you can or want to put into it. As with any problem involving a living thing, nothing will be a quick fix. You have to decide whether you have the time and effort to dedicate to consistent hands-on training. With that said, after only a couple days, I'm in awe of where we already are. I am very thankful for Randy's expertise (as well as Amazon prime, for delivering the SAM splints and bite guard gloves so quickly). We called three times and during these calls nobody mentioned anything to pick her up earlier, because the "doctor " have no space? 1.We brought you a sick dog, and i wish you told us when we called that you couldn't do it, so Bella could have been home. 2. You prescribed medicine 1 week before and you knew she was very ill, and leaving her in a cage without food, water for 10 hrs is careless and abusive. 3.your assistant lied about calling and leaving a msg.especially because we called at 3:30 and you said you let us know, then we called at 6:44 and you told us that you closed at 8 and the vet will get to it. So imagine our surprise when you said you didn't, when i picked up Bella, she was soiled and stinky, was full of feces and when she got home she throw up because how fast she was drinking! Shame on you! I will write a letter to the veterinarian board first thing in the morning , ask if there were previous complaints, and i will want all our records of our three dogs rightaway, as i want to bring Bella to a vet. I dropped off my sick dog 10am was told as soon as the doctor has free time she will be checked out .Well that didn't happen my sick dog was kept in a cage for ten hours never attended when I picked her up at closing 8pm she was dirty with feces and very thirsty total neglected to me that's abuse shame on you! I called three times to check if the doctor checked on Bella never did. The even lied saying they called me never called. At pick up one of the receptionist told me the vet had an emergency surgery well why didn't you call me hours before I could of picked up my dog instead of her staying 10 hours in a cage with diarrhea. I had to get my dog spayed here because I adopted her from the Fairfax County shelter. The staff is rude and doesn't care about your pet and it's very obvious. I have had several issues since her surgery with the dissolvable snitches not dissolving and coming through to the surface. The first time I brought her back they just clipped it off and it was fine but I brought her back today because it happened again but this time it's bright red around it also. They helped people that came in after me first and pretty much ignored me until I said something which is not right. A vet tech I'm guessing came and talked to me finally and said it was normal which is clearly is not and wouldn't do anything. I am so unhappy and frustrated with my experience here. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR PET! DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE! Yesterday I called my ferret who has been seen there prior for wellness exams had a seizure and wasn't neurologically appropriate loss control of his left side of his body is the only thing left was humane euthanasia (which I realistically knew being a veterinary technician myself with exotic experience) my current job is cat and dogs so I called deepwood since my ferrets come here I talked to 2 different receptionists making me repeat the story multiple times it's an emergency he is currently suffering so time is not on our side. They then transferred me to a tech who was cold and rude on the phone I then explain for the third time. She says how the exotics doctor isn't in okay I get that but none of the others can perform euthanasia? She says they will have to take him to the back for it and I can't be present I had to explain to her that I knew what their euthanasia consists of and I want to be present the entire time. Where I was told we will see. Not okay. I immediately called my job thankfully the doctor I work with felt comfortable doing this for me I was present the entire process and was able to kiss him and love on him. As for deepwood do better with this was a very emotional situation and being on the side of a client distraught the behavior and lack of care was horrendous I feel terrible for clients that come to your clinic. read more

Don't take your pets here. I approved extraction of 3 teeth on my dog. Dr. Ryle called to tell us how my dog was doing after the surgery and she said 11 teeth were extracted! Looking at the records, actually 13 teeth had been extracted. We did not receive any email or call about their plan to extract nearly half of my dog's teeth. She was distracted during the call and wouldn't answer my questions regarding why I hadn't been contacted. She brushed off my concerns. Shocker: the bill was more than double the original estimate. I believe the 13 teeth were removed because Dr. Ryle put profit ahead of my pet's well-being. read more

I was also required to use this facility because of my FC Animal Shelter adoption for the cat to get spayed, but will never use it again. I would rather pay a thousand dollars and get it done by Pender! My #1 complaint was that when i picked up my kitten she had no collar and her cut already looked swollen and infected. They said she was fine. By the next day it was pussing, swollen and she was in obvious pain. I had to take her to Pender emergency center and she had to stay over night! Also Deepwood didn't bother to look at her records tos ee that she'd already had her rabies and feline distemper. So she had it again. I was also annoyed as she had an eye infection from the animal shelter and had eye drops, which I did not get back. I think its worth the money to avoid deepwood and go somewhere you trust read more

We have had our part Chow/part Soft-Coated-Wheaton-Terrier for nine years. Maggie is a rescue dog and a beloved part of our family and we care deeply about her; that is why we turned to Deepwood when we noticed a lump on her foot that we feared could be cancer. We had gone to Deepwood eleven years ago when our previous dog, Sugar, was dealing with cancer. We found them to be kind, compassionate, caring, completely professional and exceptionally responsive with Sugar and they have demonstrated those same qualities in our recent experience with them. They guided us through the process of addressing Maggie's cancerous tumor which was embedded in her left rear paw ---- an extremely difficult area in which to perform a tumor removal. While they said they could perform the procedure, they were open and honest enough with us to state that a specialist could likely do a better job in the removal procedure and they facilitated the entire procedure at their facility with a specialist from Lazar. Following the surgery, Deepwood performed all the post-op testing, prescription of medicine, bandage changes, suture removal, etc that was required. They were totally responsive to all our concerns and questions giving us as much of their time as we could want. We dealt with three of the doctors at Deepwood and multiple techs and staffers and they were, without exception, compassionate and helpful in every respect. Maggie is doing well and is recuperating from her surgery. We were fortunate to hear from Dr. Pool at Deepwood over the weekend that the biopsy results indicate that the tumor seems to be less likely to metastasize than we had feared. As we chatted, it was interesting to hear from her how difficult it has been during the pandemic to maintain the desired staffing level --- clearly this has been an enormous challenge for them. I'm impressed that they have maintained such a level of professionalism under such arduous circumstances. I trust them to care for Maggie. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I don't know where to begin with Deepwood! My family took our first dog here back in 2001, and they were amazing with her. From there we have taken all our family dogs and I started taking my own when I got him in 2011. They have been amazing with every single dog we have had. We have had the ups and downs of pet ownership. The emergency vet service has been a super helpful amenity. From dogs swallowing pills, to eating chewing gum they are always there to talk to you or to have you bring the dog in to get looked at. We have had 3 dogs pass and with each one they have sent a touching card as well as remembering the next time we are in with kind words. They truly make you feel like your dogs and you are important. I trust every single vet there with their advice and prognosis'. And they have always been very accommodating when you need a last minute appointment. I recommend them to anyone looking for a new vet. No matter where I move in Virginia I will still go to them! read more

When my fiancé brought home an abandoned kitten in bad shape, I knew I needed to get him to the vet right away. My normal vet did not have anything open for a week, so I started calling around to other vets. Deepwood was able to get me an appointment within two days, so I do give them credit for being flexible because I really did not want to wait much longer than that. I waited a long time for them to call us into the exam room, and the kitten was already traumatized by the car ride and the thunderstorm outside, so being in a waiting room with other animals did not help. I also had to wait once we were in the exam room, but at least that was quiet and private. The vet asst took the kitten into the back room to do the exam and vaccinations, which I was uncomfortable with. She brought him back and told me I needed to buy some bogus herbal supplements, which I didn't buy. I asked for some antibiotics for his eyes which were obviously infected, but all they gave me was a dewormer, although they did not tell me this, I was told by my regular vet when I told them what medication they had given me. I love love LOVE my Deepwood family. I have been bringing my beloved fur babies to this clinic for years.... my dogs are elderly girls now and require more medical attention. All the techs, receptionists, and doctors are so patient and accommodating as quickly as possible. The past year has been a rough one with some bad news regarding my one pet pepper who currently seeks chemotherapy treatments at another clinic. She still always enjoyed coming here never nervous or scared. My dog Zelda currently is receiving acupuncture treatments by dr rexo which has thankfully helped her mobility enormously. Dr ryle, dr pool, dr lafave, dr Myers, dr abeli, basically all of them have either seen pepper and Zelda and or done surgery on them both. The technicians kalyn, kenzie, Donna, Pam , Phil, and two other girls super sweet i unfortunately having brain fart. They ALLLLL are so sweet to my dogs, patient as Zelda does not walk fast. And gives my senior dog that extra care and attentiveness. The doctors are very knowledgeable and have great table side manners even if it's bad news. They care for your pets as if they were their own and want all the best for them. They are very polite and their prices aren't unreasonable. I will never take any of my pets elsewhere as this place and Deepwood family has gone through a lot with me and my pets and always showed compassion and worked with me. I've been meaning to write this review for a while now, but I think this place is awesome! I was kind of wary to go at first cus the mixed reviews, but so glad I did. I have a guinea pig, so I can't really comment on the dog/cat care, but: Prices: VERY cheap compared to other exotic vets in the area (cough cough PENDER). I took my Snapdragon in to be seen for a respiratory infection, and it only cost me around $75 for the visit and antibiotics. The visit alone would've cost me about that price at several other nearby exotic vets. Drop off service: Idk if all vets do this, but I thought it was amazing that they offered something like this. I didn't have to take off any time from work-I dropped her off at 8 am and picked her up around 630. Staff: Idk if I just got lucky or what, but all the staff I dealt with here were very friendly, especially when I called the first time to ask about prices and scheduling an appt. Dr. Ryle (exotics vet on staff) was very knowledgable and helpful. Also, the thing that stood out most to me was that they called me & asked for my consent BEFORE running any type of test, x-Ray, etc. & let me know the prices beforehand. I don't have to worry about taking my pet here and being surprised with a $500 bill. Really shows me this practice is trustworthy! Again, while I can't comment on the dog/cat care, if you have a guinea pig/small/exotic pet, I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

We have been Dr. Pools loyal patients for over 15 years she has helped us through the passing of many beloved pets and held our hand every step of the way. She is an amazing, compassionate "highly" intelligent veterinarian. She is very direct and to the point. She always has a treatment plan for your pet's condition and each plan is "individualized" based on diagnostic lab results, symptoms, and her expertise. If plan A does not work she has a plan B, C etc. She focuses on both preventative and pro-active medicine for your pet's health. I could go on on of the love and compassion that I feel whenever I or my family have gone with our sick animals. We have been going to Deepwood for years and for multiple pets. While normally we come for checkups, we have also had a dog's leg amputated after a severe break and two cancerous tumor removals from another. I do not speak hyperbolically when I say we have seen every doctor there and every doctor has been fabulous. They call and check up after surgeries, they sent a condolence card when a dog passed, and they answer any questions you have to make you feel comfortable. Their doctors are so knowledgeable and have been doing this for a while. They truly care about the animals that come here. They also do farm animals which I personally don't have but if you have any, it's pretty good to know! I love this place and chose to drive 20 miles for their services although I had several vets and boarding kennels within a few miles of home and even one a 5 minute walk from my house. But Deepwood was the best. I started using them for boarding, at first the dog (110 lbs), and then the cat, and soon turned to DW for vet care for both. From start to finish, I felt my pets and I were treated as individuals, with care and compassion, not as customers. The medical care was top notch and they always had the animals' best interests in mind. Love my pups vet, the technicians and their boarding. The facility is very clean and everyone is super nice. I have been bringing my dog to Deepwood for 6 years now and would not trust that she would get the same great care anywhere else. I had to stop using their grooming service though. Sadly, I felt their groomer was only their to collect a paycheck and my dog starting freaking out when going to get groomed there so that told me something was wasn't right. Their new Petly website is horrible...please bring back the old site! I've scheduled vet appointments through the Pertly site and have never heard anything back confirming a date and time. I witnessed first hand the front desk girl pretend like she was trying to get the Doctor on the line, instead after placing the client on hold for a minute answered and said that the person they were looking for was on the other line. Completely lied, then joked about it to her co-worker saying "did you like that?" Also, they hold you financially hostage for everything. If I could give 100 stars I would . Deepwood is one of the best Vets I have been to and I have been to a lot . With that said reading some of these negative reviews I have to disagree with . I have a 3 1/2 year old pitbull named Rocco . I first came to deepwood after my lil man tore his first acl . I came for laser therapy but then found out they do hospital stay care . Which was a life savior considering my bf and I work a lot . Rocco is like my child and I'm very anal about who watches over him . I must say some of the reviews said deepwood was too expensive but if you think about it you get what you pay for And I believe the care they give their animals is worth every penny . The staff is sooo busy but still find times in the day to send me pics and updates on how Rocco is recovering . And for the front staff they are amazing in my personal opinion I am one of those annoying dog moms that change apt , reschedule 10 times , asked to get squeezed in . Not once have they ever show attitude or unprofessionalism . They deal with a lot so I would expect something but never always treat me and Rocco great . The techs mrs Pam and mrs Donna are my favorite and they LOVE Rocco he get so excited to go to the vet it's crazy . With all that being said this is an amazing vet and is worth every penny because I know Rocco is always in good hands when he is here . I have taken my pets (2 cats and 1 dog) to them for everything ranging from wellness visits, to sick appointments and even one or two emergencies. The road to get to the office is absolutely horrid and I pray the city widens the road there because traffic is a nightmare. Went here against my better judgement. I recommend just going somewhere else but here or if you can't find better, the outcome may be the same. Your pet will die simply because of the overcharging of unnecessary services. You might as well stay home. Staff is very rude and unwelcoming. They only care about billing as much as they can. Very hard to get in contact with them once you have services and if you miss the doctor calling its even worse. They'll have an idiot on the phone that can't answer any of your questions, but won't take a message to have the veterinarian call you back. Don't trust that you can't go back with your pet. Walk away and save your pet. How do you even know what they're having done back there or if they're even giving them the services you're paying for. Please stay away!! I'd give zero but doesn't go that low. read more

Bring Money...they care about your credit card limit not your ANIMAL!!!! As a 30 year patron of Deepwood...I have grown increasingly displeased with the quality of service over the years. When I need an appointment, I can only get one if I agree to pay the emergency appointment fee....then, when I needed an appointment to euthensize my poor dog the following day they wanted to charge me $50 to evaluate the dog before putting her down. I've lived every day with the animal for 16 years, they see her once a year. This was once a classy operation when the father-in-law owned it...now it has become a money churning operation. I found Randy and Leighann to be extremely knowledgeable and adept at their craft. I took the month long Foundation dog course, which held 2 hour classes once a week. You can sign up for classes on days/times that are pretty convenient for you, which I liked. They are even flexible to where if you miss a class one week, they allow you to sit in on that class on a different day that it is being held...you just have to ask. I also love how evident it is that they truly love dogs, and they love training them to ensure they will have forever homes. Leighann even worked with me 1:1 on some custom training for my dog. Staff is just spacey and kinda rude. Vet was ok. Tried 3 visits and walked away dissatisfied each time. Sigh...still need to get this b*%!h spayed. read more
