If…read moreyou've read my other reviews, you might note that I have a verifiable "thing" about old-school establishments and The Butcher Shop for me ticks all the old school boxes: glass cases displaying all on offer; butchering table a bit behind glass cases where meats are cut by these Rembrandts of protein; and succulent meats. Proper butchers greet you upon entering this Wisconsin shrine to meat and prepare to magnificent perfection the exact cut of meat you order. On this my first trip and after recovering my senses having been wowed by this little shop hidden in the woods, my particular friend and brother Bunky and I ordered porterhouse steaks (1 1/2" thick), 1"-thick boneless ribeye for the kids and for another day 1 1/2" center loin, boneless pork chops, and strips of double smoked bacon for the rotkohl to be served with pork chops. All meats will of course be grilled, steaks for 7 minutes on each side to yield charred, medium rare steaks. Oh, let me not forget to mention the smoked salmon that is so tasty and served as our biscuit for making the journey between lake cabin and The Butcher Shop. My particular friend and brother, Bunky enjoys a nearby lakeside cabin and will return as will I when next in Wisconsin. Oh, I will return, I will return and urge all who read this note to beat a direct path to the butcher shop whenever you find yourself in Wisconsin!

Inside you will find isles and rows packed with meats, cheeses, spices, chips, salsas, BBQ's, condiments and even breads. From frozen to deli service, you won't walk out of here empty handed. Should you order fresh cut meats behind the deli counter, be sure to grab a number. It goes quick! Closer to the checkout area there is a smaller section of veggies and what I call the naughty aisle which is all the fresh ground coffee, chocolates and caramels. Varying times there is a brat cookout happening on the exterior near the tented space should you be in a rush and want to grab something quick vs. taking home. Enjoy!

Our son is a very picky eater and we can only eat so much pizza and beef, so it's great to add another item to our menu's. :-) It was wonderful to talk to the owners about how they raise their bison and see all the products that are made out of bison. The butter spritz cookies looked great for a snack later. You really have to hold back. If i picked up any of the jams and jellies I'd put back on the 50# I lost. The only non specialty items were crackers and sodas as far as I could tell. There's a lot of stuff here and a lot of people buying it at any given time. My favorite was in the deli. Pete's jalapeno pickles. Now Yelpers know I don't like anything spicy. This just looked so damn good and it was bread and butter style. A great flavor. Super big slices too. They have good cheese assortments and I was impressed by a huge block of sliced American. Lots of staff. This place is almost like a hang out.

They have a pretty amazing selection of meats, sausages and a complete grocery department. They have cuts of meat like culotte and chuck eye steaks, things you don't see anywhere else. It's Wisconsin, so of course they have sausages. I would put their sausage selection right up there with Kramarczuk's. Also, they make their own sauerkraut, which I highly recommend. There is a grocery store too with produce. It's a great one stop place to get everything you need for dinner.

I got to try some at an event and decided to track some more down. You can order them for delivery in the Twin Cities area, or buy them in person at the Brooklyn Park Dragon Star Supermarket. They have specific plans to sell in more locations and at more events, but I'll probably get them delivered again when this order runs out. I always keep my freezer stocked up on dumplings from Asian grocery stores; these are so much better than what I usually buy. They are plump and flavorful, made by hand from very good, very fresh ingredients. I love being able to taste the discrete vegetables, especially the celery. These are definitely a little more expensive than a typical big sack from the frozen section, but you'll notice how much better they are.
