Golden Harvest was one of those farms, chosen by my husband who planned the entire trip. I was along for the ride. It's quaint and hard to miss with its bright-red, apple-shaped sign. We parked in front of the shop, and the smell of freshly baked goods greeted us when we entered. At that moment I knew this place would not disappoint. The counter had pies, turnovers, and cookies on display, but we came with a mission: secure a cider donut. It's so refreshing to see donuts sold at a reasonable price. For $1.35, these were a steal compared to the $6 ones sold in the city. (Yes, $6 for a single!) The donuts, which were still warm when we had them, were generously coated with cinnamon sugar. You could taste the apple cider with each bite. I would have ordered more, but I was saving my appetite for barbecue. (See my review for their smokehouse on my profile!)

Stood at the counter while two young girls stared at me no greeting, asking if I could order and they said Yeah rudely. Ordered a $4 iced tea, pulled pork sandwich and my partner got the smash burger. We asked for a cup of water and was told no, only the $2 bottled water. Ok. Burger was awful, thin, not cooked through and $12 for fast food quantity with no side. Pulled pork sandwich was ok but not at all worth $14. Came to almost $40 for two sandwiches that was not worth it. Got home and cut open an apple and it was rotten inside. Not a good visit at all.

Now learning that there's a weekly sprout truck down the street at the local church every week means it's even easier for my wife to get fresh stuff for the week while watching our little one at home. I missed our first pick up because I ran home to help my wife with our newborn and didn't realize until later that night I forgot to grab them. I got a call the next day saying they had my order in the fridge waiting for me. If people haven't heard about Capital Roots and the Grow Center, they are missing out.

The prices for produce are high and the organization of the aisles baffles me. This time I had a plan: a short list of specific needs from the Asian Market on Central which I hoped I could find here instead. But daikon was too expensive, a tub of peeled garlic was not in sight and I did not have the patience to search for wheat starch or Pantai brand fish sauce. All that said, it's still a four star experience. First for the experience of seeing many Muslim families shopping together on a Friday, and particularly the happy customers waiting at the busy halal butcher when their orders are delivered. Second for the depth of product which challenges the casual shopper but lets me know this would be a good source for a very specific product, like an obscure fruit or vegetable or one of the dozens of middle eastern flatbreads on offer. The labneh section alone deserves an award for brand diversity. Like it or not, I know I'll be back and am glad we have Farmer's Indian Market in our community.

Grandpa works the donut making robot, cranking out hot apple cider donuts while watching the world go by from the window. The building may be a little bit run down, but the place is totally charming. There are a few tables toward the back of the shop to sit down and enjoy your hot donuts. However, most people take them to go. That seems like a bad idea, especially since the donuts are both warm and covered with cinnamon sugar. To eat them in the car is a recipe for disaster. Sugar would get everywhere and you would soon be a sticky mess. Saving them for later would be a tragedy, since apple cider donuts are so much better when they are warm. It's a rare treat to get warm cider donuts. As Otis said, these are decidedly more aggressive on the spicing. I tasted not just cinnamon, but also nutmeg. Are they worth an hour drive? Probably not. But if you are within a half hour of this orchard, I'd say it's worth the trip.

Also lots of flowers and hanging baskets that were absolutely beautiful. The store has lots of gardening supplies and decorations. Bird baths, gnomes, chimes, trellises, you name it! I had lots of fun shopping and planning my veggie garden. There are also large greenhouses to wander through. Very nice employees as well. Great experience all around.

Of course, by early November the outdoor market has moved indoors and we have little idea what the waterfront outdoor market looks like, but I've gotta say I'm impressed. I'm impressed with the organisation of the so many vendors in different corners of the two-floor space, and the variety and quality of the goodies available. Pretty much all cooked foods were upstairs with tables and chairs dotted amongst vendors, and the offerings ranged from West African and Caribbean American to dumplings, crepes, and empanadas. There was a "makers" room with clothing, jewlery, pottery, and other knickknacks, and produce, Belgian sugar waffles, and dried flower arrangements lined the middle section of the ground level. Probably the biggest room was in the back corner across from the 'booze' section, and this is where we see the dairy, dips, honey, peanut butter, gourds, pickles, and lots of baked goods, some of which we couldn't resist. We ended up with a small haul from Golden Blend Bakehouse, Our Daily Bread, and The Placid Baker. I'm be sure to follow up on how the baked goods go but the farmers market was impressive and I'm glad this has become a real landmark in the Capital Region. Parking is available among the street (mostly metred) and near the waterfront. We'll be back.
