This place is well kept and i couldn't have asked for a better experience from any gun range. Now being from California, i was never able to shoot fully automatic guns until i came here which was awesome! My friend and I shot a HK G36c and a Ar-15 and their gun range is state of the art. Granted i didnt know how to fully use all the functions but seeing it all there was awesome. The service here is awesome as all the reps in the actual gun range were polite and even told us what to do when shooting fully automatic. I don't really have any pricing to compare it to but shooting here was much cheaper than shooting back in LA which was nice. I think one of the coolest things about this place is they have a M134a minigun on display here which is awesome! Let me get this out there first: I am, politically speaking, a pretty liberal guy, although I was born, raised and live in Texas. I was raised around guns. My dad hunted every deer season, while my brothers and I would explore the deer lease (when the hunters were not in their stands) and practice shooting at cans. We were taught how to handle guns with respect, from a fairly young age (around 10 years old, I think?). The last time I held a gun was probably about 25 years ago. When my wife and I divorced, I gave her my handgun for protection and did not replace it. I have been split on the idea of gun control. I do believe some weapons are not appropriate for average citizens but also believe guns should NOT be banned entirely. Like the Jewish Defense League used to say, "For every Jew, a .22." I think we have to have some form of defense against crime or a government run amok. I've been in the large sporting goods stores, like Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops and, although their architecture and displays are pretty amazing, I've never felt comfortable there. Recently, all the Donald Trump t-shirts in those stores just make me cringe. Nevertheless, I decided I needed a handgun for personal defense, and began searching for suggestions online. I asked for recommendations from my Facebook friends, which resulted in two responses: 1) recommendations of guns and places to buy them, and 2) friends asking why the hell I needed a gun! One of my former Apple coworkers, and for whose opinion on guns (if not politics) I have a great deal of respect, suggested I try Defender Outdoors. He and I like to debate politics, as he is at least as conservative as I am liberal. However, we never let our differences interfere with our friendship, so I followed his advice. One Sunday, I headed out to check out the guns at Defender Outdoors (D.O.), thinking I wanted to get a 9mm handgun that I had read was one of the ten best ever made. The Retail Manager, Dax, walked me through D.O.'s VERY impressive inventory, where a shopper can pick up and examine any of at least 80 to 120 different models. He was very well versed in the pros and cons of each and guided me to a handgun I really enjoy and with which I've had pretty good accuracy, even though I've been away from guns for a long time. The shopping experience was VERY reminiscent of the Apple Store. There was no pressure to buy, no looking down on a newbie, (well oldie-newbie) and no rush. Once I thought I had made my choice, Dax took me to the shooting range counter, where I rented the model, in which I was interested, and proceeded to the gun range to try it out. It was great! I filled out the necessary paperwork (on a computer) and put the gun on layaway, while awaiting approval for my purchase, from the feds. This was completed fairly quickly. The price of the gun was not the cheapest in town, but I didn't feel gouged either. I felt that it was fairly priced, when coupled with the amazing customer service experience I received. A few days later, I came back and bought the gun and a few supplies (carrying case, ammo, cleaning kit) and signed up for the "License To Carry" class, required by the State of Texas, to be able to carry my gun (concealed) in public. I had also asked friends to recommend an indoor gun range, closer to my home, for my practice sessions. I visited a couple of these suggested gun stores and gun ranges and was shocked by the inferiority to Defender Outdoors! They were tacky, by comparison. There were old, stuffed animals that were not aging well. There were mismatched display cases that made these other places have a pawn shop feel. In short, other stores did not have the professional appearance OR staff I had so thoroughly enjoyed at D.O. Also, the clientele at D.O. just seemed to be more like me: not obsessed with guns, but definitely enthusiasts, in the sport of shooting. The huge lounge area had TVs with Fox News AND MSNBC showing! PERFECT! The following Sunday morning, I attended the LTC class, held in a nice classroom, and passed the written and shooting tests an am awaiting my license from the State. Although D.O. is not the most conveniently located gun range, in relation to my home, I will continue to go there for shooting practice, because of the facility and staff. The gun range looks like an FBI gun range in the movies: well-lit, mechanized target carriages, so shooting doesn't have to stop for target changes, attentive and helpful Range Safety Officers who are always happy to patiently give advice and answer questions. I have been so impressed with their gun range, that I have invited friends to go shooting with me and their feedback, about D.O., is always enthusiastic. They love the place as much as I do! Definitely check out Defender Outdoors, especially if you're new to guns and don't want to feel denigrated, in any way. GREAT store! read more

My fiancé and I came here last night. They a date night package, covered our lane fee, 2 handgun rentals that would could change out at any time, came with 100 bullets & target sheets. We bought extra bullets and spent about $65 total for 2 of us. I'm not sure what the average rates are for a shooting range, but I felt like this was a good deal! The facility is stunning! So clean and beautifully laid out. The staff and service was wonderful! Guys at the rental counter were extremely friendly & knowledgeable. I was impressed with this place so much I got a hero's membership now I do need time to shoot there but it's worth the price. Love the fact that I can shoot my Glock and M-4 there. While the staff is friendly they do not do anything to follow up on orders placed for items not in inventory. I had an order placed for a Glock 21 and 50 BMG in April 2021. I called every couple months to check status but was told the are on order with their supplier and there was nothing else they could do. After I saw inventory readily available on the Glock, I cancelled my order after 6 months. I gave them 2 more months on the 50, but after talking with the manufacture, Armalite, they told me if I ordered it directly from them, I'd have it within 4 weeks. Don't bother ordering from defender if you want any follow up on your order. read more

This is not always been a good experience, but it was a pleasant place to shoot until recently. In the past, I have watched one of their employees belittle and be rate paying customers as if he was their father. I understand he is the safety marshal inside this firing range, but still should talk to people better than that the black gentleman that works there is very pushy and rude. Even though I know Safety is the number one thing he doesn't have to talk to people like that. I've only witnessed it on several occasions I have not experienced it but recently I was behind some people and watched him at the front desk do some things that I am no longer going to be taking my money to shoot there anymore. It was embarrassing and I was embarrassed for the people he was talking to in treating like that that black gentleman whoever he is has no customer service skills how he was treating the two black gentleman in front of me. I was embarrassed for them talk about racial profiling absolutely not. This is not where we're going in 2023 to 2024. This type of behavior Hass to be stopped, and we should not be giving money to people who continue, the horrible trends that have been every day so far, I would suggest people of color find some other place to shoot. Lowered the rating to 2 stars due to how defender's spams me. I even removed my self from the list, still get spammed, seems they have multiple email list now I have to unsubscribe from each one. Huge pain in the ass. These guys send the same bullshit out every other day, and none of it is of value. Staff seems ok, prices are list and service seems mediocre . I have used the range a few times and competed in a uspsa match here. This is not a place to shop on lowest price, I tried to buy a gun from them, they seemed less then eager to talk to me. So I passed on making any purchases from them. I wanted to take my brother in law from London to a shooting range on Saturday as I was visiting from Houston. We googled the closest place to where we were staying and unfortunately it was this place, here's why; 1. Two hour wait- Okay fine 2. Needed two lanes for 4 people- Okay no prob 3. Started shooting and then told we weren't allowed to use our bullets and only allowed brass casing. Okay could have told us before we shot a round of our aluminum bullets- so I bought a pack (overpriced of course but still we understood rules are rules) 4. Second round I did rapid fire- we were told not allowed. Okay rules are rules, without question we all followed rules 5. Mr military over there (didn't take his name but he's the one walking around strapped as though he's a government official or maybe a strict outdoor defender Nazi) came around a few times eying us, picked up some of our old aluminum casings and told us he knows we are not listening to roles and continue shooting our brass bullets which made me furious as he was accusing of something he was too lazy to pick up in the first place! He said again I know y'all are shooting so I packed up and was leaving. 5. The range was full but since my husband has very strong middle eastern features he could easily be mistaken for someone other than the race he is, so, Mr Military insisted on picking on my husband several times which frustrated us and this made me realize what these 911 people actually had to go through! It's a shame. 6. Anyways bad experience, even when I went to buy bullets the manager was rude didn't even say hi. (My skin is a little tanned for them too ;)) 7. It's a shame that racism still exists. 8. First impression: the outside looks giant and industrial. Almost top-golfy if you're into that. Obviously no large netting or ground targets, but that's just my perception. You walk in and immediately are overwhelmed by the amount of retail garb. Shirts, carabiners, jackets, earmuffs, and oh yeah....guns! Lots of guns. For a first timer, this is semi-terrifying hearing all the clicks and snaps of the metal on the unloaded weapons. I found myself steering clear of them at first but warmed up to them eventually. The staff are some of the most friendly Trump supporters I've ever met. Very thorough in their explanations of which guns would be best for a beginner and didn't look down on me because I haven't shot anything ever. The facility is as large and daunting inside as it looks on the outside, but a very nice gentleman met me at the check in counter to walk me back to the range. He explained what I could expect walking into the range and how to be safe. Once I was in, he taught me how to safely load and fire my weapon of choice. I went through 100 rounds of ammo (which isn't a lot) and wasn't really aiming for anything specific (although I did shoot the target in the dick)...just aiming in the general direction of my target. I feel like my visit was a success. I'll probably be back, but not yet sporting a MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN hat. It was a great experience thanks to everyone there! read more

My husband and I have been to several local indoor and outdoor gun ranges. This is by far my favorite! The staff is friendly, it is very clean, while they have range officers they let you do your own thing and don't bug you. With that said, the range officers are really nice and willing to help if you ask. The indoor range stays very cool, so you're not dripping wet by the time you leave. Been a few times to the sporting clay spot (amazing, people are great, great course), just went to the indoor range did a little work in the rifle lane, and moved over to the handgun lane. Equally amazing. I live in Austin Texas, directly by "the range" and defender is probably the best I've ever been to. Very helpful staff too btw, not judgmental, helped me get my spikes tactical ar15 red dot sighted in. Going on a little hog hunt next weekend. Very happy with these guys. read more

Holy smokes, this place is heaven for Men! If you're a gun enthusiast in any capacity, this is the place for you. For starters, when you walk into their store, it's like rolling into a Land Rover Dealership. This place is top notch and you'll feel it when you walk in. Next, they have a HUGE selection of guns in almost every caliber and about 90% of the guns are easily accessible without the staffs help. Along with the guns, they have a ton of accessories; whether you're looking as a hunter or as an operator. They have it all. I've only been to their 85 yard indoor rifle range and it is awesome! They helped me set up my optic and sight in my rifle. It's very clean and the target machine is big quality and easy to use. Overall, this is my new neighborhood gun store. I went out to Defender Outdoors today for the first time. It is an awesome range to say the least!!! Very professional staff, super friendly, and a giant selection of goodies!!! Firearms, ammo, and gear selection looked more like an all around Outfitter than just plain ol' range selection. I browsed around checking their prices on the guns the had on display and they were very competitive. A few brands I was looking for they had in stock with great model selection, STI, Sig, Beretta, Glock, Walther... They had practically a whole wall of AR's and I'm going to save that for another day. As far as the shooting lanes go, I'm more into outdoor shooting over indoor.... BUT, this range exceeds all of my expectations for an indoor range. The standard shooting lanes are wide enough to move around even if you had a couple of people shooting with you. EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN range!! Amazing staff, I went in to buy my first gun, I had $500 on me, and that's all I wanted to spend, there wasn't anything that I wanted in my price range, but the man helping me, (i didn't get his name unfortunately) suggested me to go to the gun show, and gave me some pointers on inspecting pre-owned guns. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. i've never been to a gun store where i didnt feel afraid. most places ive gone are all in shady areas of town and are in bad buildings. i went on friday for machine gun friday. SO MUCH FUN 10$ a mag and you get to choose from 3-5 rifles. the store is set up in an amazing way, guns are laid out on display where you can pick them up and pull the trigger and really test out the feeling. i never once felt in danger which made me want to buy a gun. im kind of on the fence about our current gun issues but this place set me straight. the staff here are very friendly. my first time shooting i had a bad experience with the instructor he was basically a dick, i get it okay its a gun and people can die, but NOT here. the instructors were all very friendly helped each other and explained how to use the gun without being a dick about it. and thats the experience i wanted and received here. i didnt have to sign up for a membership but the prices seem fair if youre a member, if you arent then it gets expensive so its a no brainer. machine gun friday doesnt require a membership, just pay for your bullets and get ready to hold down that trigger hahah it was fun! read more

Outstanding customer service! This place opened in February of 2016. They have a wide selection of different types of guns. They also have classes offered on site. They have Live Scan and ink fingerprinting. The reason why I visited this location was for the ink fingerprinting. Make sure to ask for Marty! He was extremely polite and professional. The second I walked through the door I was greeted and shown where to go for my fingerprinting. They even offer valet out front if you would like. This place really made the process easy. Defender Outdoors Shooting Center was a impressive place to shoot. The staff was exceptionally helpful. The range was very clean and there were plenty of guns to look at. If you are new to Texas and the southern gun culture you won't be disappointed about this place. They are serious about guns! I went with my two friends who are members and they showed me a good time. The safety personnel in the indoor range area offered advice and general gun safety. By the end of his instruction, I was hitting the target constantly and I felt like I was James Bond! Overall Defender Outdoors Shooting Center was a top notch facility with professional staff providing as safe and exhilarating environment! This gun range is the range I would have designed if I were going to build one. It's beautiful. It is not geared toward just the boys. Right now not everything is in place but it will be amazing. They are extremely busy right as they just opened so don't expect not to wait awhile if you go during peak times. We waited till after dinner on a Saturday night and the place was dead, only 2 people on the lanes. They are open most nights till 9pm so lots of opportunities for slower times. In the lanes there is someone who monitors shooters. He was very pleasant and not at all intense like you find sometimes. When you shoot there is a small wind to your back so all the smoke goes downrange. The equipment is digital and programmable. Be prepared to pay for everything because nothing is included. You pay for all your targets and $1 for ear protection. If it is maintained it will be a nice place to shoot. I also purchased my gun there. Maybe since it was my first gun I expected more than what is normal. They never showed me how to take it apart to clean and put it back together or anything. It was a huge purchase for me that I agonized over for weeks and it turned into kind of a non event. Membership here has it's privileges. The memberships are pricey because of the initial up front payment but the monthly payments are not too bad. Most memberships get you all your range time and targets at no cost. The big plus is lane reservations up to 2 weeks out. They have some Ladies Only events which I like. Will definitely shoot here. read more
