One of the 3 brothers rudely said there was nothing they could do because they were out of business and hung up the phone. They took the money and ran. I bought my first riding lawnmower. Not having any experience with them, I had concerns being able to take care of it properly. My husband used to take care of things but now it's me. Great service, I love it's a family run company. Unfortunately sometimes women are talked down to but this company was patient with my questions, provided common sense guidance and I felt secure knowing they are there to take care of any maintenance in the future. We purchased a backyard play set from Dehne in the middle of May from Tom. He informed us there was a two week lead time from the manufacturer on delivery due to COVID (completely understandable). Fast forward a month plus...ZERO communication from Dehne. Tom's business partners have been beyond rude and unprofessional when my wife or I call to see where our shipment is. They told us "call the manufacturer direct," "be patient, this is the way it's done," and my personal favorite..."deal with it." Dehne doesn't manufacture anything. They're a middleman/reseller, so they're at the mercy of the manufacturer, however, they are in the customer service business and what they're currently producing is hot garbage. While an apology admits guilt, and I truly believe these folks don't believe they've done anything wrong...when it comes to doing business, empathy goes a long way. To anyone considering transacting with Dehne, reconsider your options. Heck, I'd pay more money to one of their competitors because of the way they've treated my wife and I. read more

I have been working with Dehne since I moved to the area a little over 5 years ago. Their prices are inline with the big box stores. Their service is top notch and they are very honest and knowledgeable about their products. I find them as a well run family business. Yes, they charge for service and I find their prices reasonable. If you spend a little time with them and listen to them you will always learn something about your equipment and how to keep it out of the shop and last longer. Try getting that from a big box store. I was able to recently buy a new Toro snowblower from them without stepping foot in the store. They spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with me to find the best snowblower for my needs. It was assembled and delivered the next day at the same price as the big box stores. The gentleman that delivered it gave me a socially distant and masked walk around of the snowblower, answered my questions and made sure it started and functioned before he left. read more

I will always support a local independent business for the service they offer. I purchased a Stihl BG55 gas powered blower at least six years ago from Dehne. I recently had issue starting it. I called and spoke to John, he suggested I stop by and he would check the spark and we could make a preliminary diagnosis. With that said I thought it would be a good investment changing all the comments for a tune up. We discovered the spark arrester was full of carbon and I would need to replace it. John did not have one in stock and ordered one for me. In the interim the tune up parts rendered the ability to start the machine- the part arrived 1.5 days later and I was immediately contacted. When I went to pick the part up John coached me on how to install it - better than YouTube I may add. Anyway my Stihl Blower will continue to give me the service I expect and I highly recommend Dehne for their extraordinary service. If you need any power equipment give them an opportunity, you will not be disappointed... read more

Brought my lawn mower in for repair. It started slipping when engaging the drive. They charged me 140 and it still slips. Also never had an issue with the engine in 4 years and now the motor stalls after they worked on it. Feel I over paid way too much on suspect work. Wish I looked at other reviews before going here. I live 10 minutes away from Dehne, but have never done business there as for 25 years had great service from a competitor Franks before they went out of business last Fall. I went there with a pull starter component from my ECHO string trimmer that broke and I needed a replacement part...they are ECHO dealers. I showed the part to the two guys behind the counter, all they said was do you have the model number...I said no, but here is the actual part I need. They replied in an arrogant, lazy, dont care reply..."they are 100 models, without the model number we dont know what you need". This is a dealer and specialized shop...I asked if they could look it up...they replied no. These jerks could have found the part in 3 minutes in there reference materials! In fact I was so pissed off, I went home, went online to ereplacement parts.com...found my part in 3 minutes, ordered it online, saved myself 30.00!! ARROGANT, LAZY, ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE! Found a Stihl FS60 string trimmer online - rated highly on most consumer reviews. Some said it was "hard to find." Their web site directed me to Dehne. I pre-ordered for pick up. The folks there could not have been nicer. I don't know which of the two brothers / owners I dealt with, but he could not have been more friendly, informative, and generally helpful. It sounds like a lot of grips on yelp have to do with service / maintenance work. No comment there. Their customer service on sales, though, was unmatched, in my opinion. My Dad and I have been coming here for years. These guys are extremely knowledgeable and truly want to help. Lawn mower, chainsaw, trimmer, multi-tool are just some of the purchases I have made from here. Not only do they do a nice job fixing the machines but also equipping the customer with more knowledge on how to best take care of the tool at hand. HORRIBLE - UNETHICAL - BAD - RUDE - UNPROSSIONAL I paid for a estimate for a 6 year old snow blower repair, plus a special on pickup and delivery. After 4 weeks I received an estimate of over $600 to repair. I went to the store to review and discuss the options. I was shown the issues and decided to not have it repaired. I was then offered the option of not paying for the estimate if I "abandoned" the snow blower at the store. I said I did not want to "abandon" the equipment and wanted it returned. Since I did not want to "abandon" (give it to them) the persons attitude changed significantly. I said I wanted returned and was told even though we had agreed to the special rate prior to the season, I would have to pay more for the return. After a slightly heated conversation they agreed to return it. When it was delivered, I received the snow blower and a box of parts. They did not put it back together. Are all the parts there(?), I do not know. I called after the return and was told since the repair was not performed that putting it back together was not part of the estimate. I am interested in a new snow blower, but definitely not at Dehne. read more

I have too say after shopping at Dehne for 38 years there is a reason this family run business is my go to place. I just purchased my second Honda Generator there today and it was a wonderful experience. I called and they provided the answers I asked, and when I came to the store to make my purchase they suggested the size I required and showed me how to operate my new Generator. I was looking to buy a smaller unit and realized from there explanations I was not looking at the correct sized unit. In today's fast paced world every one wants to just buy on line and not know they need to be able to get there tools serviced or inspected yearly. These Guys strive to provide good customer service at a fair price. They will explain or suggest what you need in size, so your not making the wrong purchase. I'm so disappointed in this company and I feel it is necessary to warn others. We ordered a play set from them over a month ago. We were told it would take 2-3 weeks to arrive. They never once contacted me to tell me it would be delayed. I've called them multiple times asking for updates and they give me no answers. They eventually just gave me the number for the play set manufacturer to have me call. While Tom was lovely when he sold it to me, ever since this purchase his brother has been nothing but rude and awful to work with. I deeply regret giving this company my business. Great Customer Service! I called up at 4:50 pm on a Saturday to see if they had any fasteners for my Toro Snow Thrower and Tom there said that they were closing in 10 minutes and would not be open on Sunday. But he said that he could leave me some of the used (but good) special Torx head bolts in a bag outside for me as well as some of the new lock nuts. This was over and above the call in my opinion and it enabled me to replace the paddles on my snow thrower on Sunday morning right after getting 4 inches of snow from the night before. I would give them zero stars if the sight allowed it. First of all customer service is horrendous. Owner that takes the calls is obnoxious, overtalks you and makes promises he cannot keep. My lawnmower is still under warranty and I explained this to them before they picked it up. Two weeks later nothing yet and they fought the warranty tooth and nail before even looking at the mower. I am ver y satisfied, I have a 30 year old Toro snowblower that needed some work, it wouldn't start, or of it did it would stop quickly. These guys know their stuff, they rebuilt the carburator, did a tune up and even cleaned up my machine, looking and working good as new, now my 30 year old machine runs like I bought it yesterday. Horrible customer service. In my twenty years as a landscaper have never dealt with such rude, arrogant people. Took in my echo line trimmer. Paid over $400 for it. Got the one with the big engine so that it would be reliable. Less than a year old. The warrant on the machine is for two years.He told me that the engine was shot because it overheated. He said it was my fault because the air filter was dirty. I explained that I clean it every day. He didn't seem to care. Said Echo won't honor warranty that he already talked to them and that was that. If I wanted them to fix it it would be over $200. Like I would trust them to fix something. He said if you don't like it you call them. Sent my wife to pick up machine because I was done dealing with them. When she got there they had my machine in pieces and that's how they turned it over but not by first asking for $20 for quote checking the machine. The machine they wouldn't honor the warranty for which was now in pieces. When my wife let them know of her displeasure they said you should of checked the ticket it says we charge for looking at it. Needless to say. NEVER again!!! read more

If your goal is to patronize a business that thrives on rudeness arrogance and dishonesty then look no further. These guys are some of the absolute worst human beings I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. I called them to schedule service for a snow blower. I was promptly greeted with "you're looking at a one week wait time." It wasn't the fact that they were incredibly busy that bothered me as I would expect them to be swamped during winter. It was the way in which the halfwit said it, sounding as if I was causing him a great inconvenience. Foolishly, I went ahead with bringing my Toro to these clowns. Ten days pass, still no repair completed nor a quotation. I finally received a voice mail with a quote. Cost was higher than I expected plus they attempted to add unnecessary repairs to pad the bill. I told them just stick with the starter and tune up. Was quoted $110 for that, again on the high side of what I expected to pay but just wanted my machine back. I arrived to pick it up and lo and behold the bill was $210. I even have the voicemail where the jackass gave me the original quotation of $110. I brought this matter to their attention, even replaying their voicemail message as to what I was quoted. They were more concerned with arguing the indefensible and just being rude. These idiots are total liars. My advice to anyone needing lawn or snow blower repairs, go anywhere but Dehne. read more

A few years ago I decided to purchase a snow blower from Dehne because I grew tired of the high cost of our plow service. I have a long driveway and live in the North Shore suburbs. In addition to the high cost, the plow service was tearing up our lawn. The staff at Dehne appeared to be very knowledgeable - based on their recommendation I purchaseda Ariens Sno-Thro - Model 920001. I discussed the maintenance of the snowblower with the staff at Dehne and I made sure to follow their directions. The snowblower is about 5 years old and I arranged service for the machine two summers ago. While somewhat confusing to operate, my snowblower seemed to hold up year after year. It handled the big blizzard of Feburary 2011 without any problems - so I thought I had made the right choices with the machine and my service plan with Dehne. As 2013 turned to 2014, the Chicago area was hit with significant snow. While handling the first few small storms without problems, my snowblower suddenly refused to start. Dehne quickly picked up my machine, but never called to tell me how long it would take to repair. After a few calls the staff informed me that repairs would require a minimum of two weeks. This is my nightmare scenerio that I hoped to avoid by choosing to work with Dehne in the first place. I am without a snowblower during the heart of the Chicago winter. In my discussion today, the owner said my snowblower probably refused to start because of old fuel.We had a mild winter last year and old fuel may have damaged the internals of the engine. The person on the telephone suggested that I should have used a stabilizer. He also explained that repairs of snowblowers always take a long time in the winter because it is a "feast or famine" business. In all my prior conversations with people at Dehne a "stablizer" was never mentioned. A better run business would not tell customers that they essentially are "out of luck" because they need repairs at an inconvenient time. Given the fragility of the engine, I don't think I should have purchased an Ariens snowblower. I fault Dehne for not giving me better advice. Also, this business needs to come up with some sort of strategy for "the first snow" problem. I find it shocking that they will essentially leave their customers without snowblowers throughout the winter months. read more

Took in my mini Honda rototiller for a tune up. Ran fine in previous seasons, but it developed a stalling problem when put under load. Dehne had a spring tune-up coupon, so I took it to them figuring it needed a carburetor adjustment, whatever. About a month later, I got a call with the estimate: "Not worth repairing. These things are notorious for drivetrain problems, yada yada. But we have new ones starting at $389." (Words to that effect.) Think about that for a moment, as a implied sale's pitch: "Your Honda is a piece of crap. Would you like a new Honda piece of crap?" Sadly I was not in the mood to pick it up, pay for their "work", and then take it somewhere else. To be fair, I generally trust that Honda makes a decent product, and the service tech MAY have been right about the not worth repairing it part. But then again, it started easily, it ran, the drivetrain did what it was suppose to do, but it just wouldn't keep running when the tines started digging. That's not cause to "junk it" imo. It left a bad taste, and I won't return. read more

It took over a week to fix a flat tire off a riding mower when another dealer told me they fix flats while you wait. Luckily for Dehne, it was repaired by the time I showed up to take it to the other dealer. Another bonehead move was when they re-installed the carburetor on my snow blower backwards so I can't access the drain screw anymore to drain fuel before storage. I now drive quite a distance farther to give my business to people who like having customers and know what they're doing. Avoid these clowns at all costs. read more

I took my snowblower in for the replacement of a rubber gasket and explicitly told them to do nothing else. 2 weeks later when they called me to pick it up and was confronted with $250 bill for various other items which I specifically told them not to do when I dropped it off. They even replaced a scraper blade which I replaced myself late last season and was not in need of change. When I objected to charges, they would not adjust and told me that if they did the work, it was needed. I will not be back and found the ownership to be arrogant and rude. read more
