What other great things can I say about Dr. Bhoyrul that has already been said in other reviews but I will give it a shot. There are many people who have trouble finding their calling but that's clearly not the case with Dr. Bhoyrul. He is the best Gastro doctor and surgeon, period. I was having gastro issues for quite a while and I had seen several other gastroenterologist and none of them could come up with an accurate diagnosis. I did some research and homework and thank god I found Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul. He is extremely professional, caring and an expert at his craft. I am completely indebted to him and his staff as I was in dire need or I would not be here today. I had Roux NY surgery for weight loss 22 years ago. During that time I had two major revisions and too many ER trips to even recall. During a planned visit to San Diego in October I became very ill. When I say ill I mean vomiting for hours with no relief despite the four different rescue meds I carried with me. My daughter takes me to Scripps ER on day 3. The doctor there was great, he saw nothing on imaging but really emphasized the importance of me seeing Dr. Bhoyrul to follow up. They were able to get me in at Olde Del Mar with Dr. Bhoyrul. One of the first things he said to me was," would you be interested in reversing your bypass. Without hesitation I said yes not knowing it was even possible. One week later I had laparoscopic surgery to determine if it could be done safely after living 22 years with malnutrition and low body weight. The following week I went in for the laparoscopic gastric bypass reversal. It went fantastically. No complications and more importantly I'm 4 months in and am finally starting to feel like myself. I eat well, very well. I don't panic at the thought of what food could do to me anymore. I got my life back. I could go on about Dr. Bhoyrul but instead of just singing his praises I want people to know there is hope, there is a way back to a normal life and a normal relationship with food. Wish I could give Dr. Bortz 100 stars! He performed a robotic inguinal hernia mesh repair surgery on me yesterday and I can't believe how well it went! I work as a advanced practice clinician, so I am pretty meticulous in overseeing the care my family receives and I must say, he is phenomenal. Earlier this year I had a VERY SUDDEN case of diverticulosis, with no warning. I lift weights 6 days a week, walk 4 miles a day, eat really healthy and am exceptionally fit. Out of nowhere I had a grossly distended stomach, no energy and feeling awful, I checked into Scripps LaJolla ER. A scan revealed that my colon had actually burst. I was operated on the next day. Hello, my name is Elizabeth Chevalier I was an emergency patient of Dr. Bortz. HE SAVED MY LIFE!!!! I was admitted into ER at Scripps with serve abdominal pain/ swollen abdomen. After a scan they noticed a huge infected cyst in my abdomen. I met Dr. Bortz at in-patient he was SO kind and caring. He informed me of the severity of my "cyst" and that it had to be removed the safest way possible. I felt beyond confident and comfortable with him preforming such a serious surgery. He has the best bedside manner! When Dr. Bortz preformed the surgery with Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul they were shocked to find a huge mesenteric lymphangioma tumor. Dr. Bhoyrul and Kirsten are phenomenal! I went to a couple doctors and GI specialists before them and they told me I had no hernia and they couldn't figure out my abdominal pain or why I needed 100 mg of Prilosec a day just to make it though. I was told I was just stressed and that I had to be lying about the amount of tums and Prilosec I was taking just to barely get through my day. During my first visit after only 2 min Dr. Bhoyrul looked at my 3 year old endoscopy photos and said you have a hiatal hernia. I had surgery for it and even though the procedure was some of the most intense two weeks of pain I've had I fully healed and did well. But a problem was still there. I had an eating disorder that absolutely destroyed my body and even after surgery and being in remission from my ED I had horrible nausea and vomiting and stabbing intense abdominal pain. I went to the ER multiple times crying into a pillow and belching wondering what was happening to me. I finally got an abdominal ultrasound after non stop harassing my doctors for one. Sure enough it showed gallbladder sludge. I avoided surgery for my gallbladder removal as I didn't want to get a second surgery and wanted to see if I could keep that organ. But it was so bad I couldn't live like that anymore. I told Del Mar Surgical care team that I was in a lot of pain and sweating after meals, I was losing a lot of weight, and couldn't maintain like this. I have a pretty high pain threshold and this was one of the worst pains I've ever experienced chronically. They encouraged me to follow through and get my gallbladder surgery so I did reluctantly. It CHANGED MY LIFE! I am now able to eat all the foods I couldn't before like whole eggs, butter, red meat, and even olive oil! I gained the healthy weight back and no longer look emaciated. They have saved my life twice and I am so grateful for their kindness but also their perceptiveness towards my deteriorating health. They really care about what they do and perfecting their craft, I would not be alive with their help. He even used some of the same incisions from my hernia surgery to do my gallbladder removal surgery and the way he closed off the wound the second time the scar looks even better. I'm absolutely blown away by the meticulous attention to detail and the mastery of the art of surgery they achieved with me. I was very depressed and had dark thoughts for so long that have been lifted by hope and determination and surgical intervention to achieve a better life for myself. I can't thank them enough for the life they've put back into my eyes. My friends have even said I have more color and fullness to me these days, that my demeanor is positive and uplifting, and I am able to work without fear of being doubled over against the floor in agony after eating something. I'm not sure where to start about my journey, I guess I'll start with my start weight was 385. I was very uphappy, unmotivated zero energy, depressed and felt hopeless. As many other reviews have said, Dr. Bhoyru and the reset of the staff are very good. The surgery went off with out any hitches and the weight loss has been great. The reduced amount of stars come from the billing departments. Long story short, we were mislead into agreeing to pay for the surgery out of our own pocket even though insurance did indeed approve the claim. After a lengthy battle (18 + months) they have convinced the insurance company that they don't owe a refund even though it had been approved. Just be sure you are aware of what will be covered and what isn't so you don't get stuck with thousands out of your pocket. read more

I cannot even express how great my experience was/is at Olde Del Mar. I found them because they had the best comments and rating online and I am so glad they live up to that hype. I got the vertical sleeve surgery and it was the most easiest and thorough process I have ever had. They make you feel so comfortable and make sure you are making the right decision in your journey. From day 1 they are so attentive to all your questions and concerns. Dr. Matthew Cooper is amazing as I'm sure all the doctors are. However, Dr. Cooper is very involved in every step! He did my surgery and made sure to see me after surgery and again the very next day on a Saturday when he didn't even work. He follows through with everything. At my 2 week post op, I already lost 20ish pounds and he was so proud of me. I also had the help of their registered dietician and she was so detailed on exactly what you eat and how much you eat. It really is a fail proof process. I have a life changing tool and I have them to thank for that. I am now 7 weeks post op and have lost close to 35 pounds. I have been wanting to write this review for THREE years. I have a LOT to say. If you are thinking about getting gastric surgery with Dr. Bhoyrul... please read this. Let's start from the beginning. I was supposed to have a different weight loss surgery with a different doctor in September 2018. When the doctor went in for surgery she had to stop because she said I had a hiatal hernia. I was very confused because I had no digestive issues and very upset because at the time had paid out of pocket for elective surgery. Now January 2019 I began seeing Dr. Bhyorul and explained to him my situation. He recommended Gastric Sleeve and I was on board. He had me do an endoscopy with a doctor in that building he works with to see if I had a hernia or not because when doing the Sleeve Surgery they can fix the hernia at the same time. My endoscopy comes out showing NO HERNIA according to Dr. Bhoyrul. We proceeded with all the post op appointments including all the required dietician appointments. Insurance makes you do all these so that it looks like surgery was the last and final try to lose weight. I spent all together a few thousand on co-pays, dietician appointments, supplies from the office, deductibles, medications, AND unexpected hospital charges. I did not mind at the time. I wanted to get healthy. We are now in August 2019. I had Gastric Sleeve Surgery. I felt great. No pain, no issues. All the staff and doctors were so great and kind. Went on with my life. A few months later when I finally began having a few bites of solid food.. I started having problems. I would have like burp attacks. They would happen every single time I ate food.. no matter what kind and how little. It was getting worse to the point where it was BELCHING and I would have to sit alone for an hour after eating and belch very very loudly and be in so much pain. I complained about this to the doctors and to Kirsten. They brushed it off. I went home and started documenting these belching episodes. October 2020 a year later, I went back and played them for Dr. Bhoyrul. He immediately said "No, that is not normal. I need you to get and endoscopy immediately. You might have a hernia." I remember saying WHAT?? I literally was in shock. I kept saying I thought you checked for this last year before my surgery are you sure it's not something else?? I went and did the endoscopy and guess what... there's a hiatal hernia. Now what do I do? Scheduled the surgery for November 2020 to have the hiatal hernia removed. I was infuriated upset and frustrated. I am not a shallow person but the scar and trauma damage this surgery caused to my previous gastric wounds has left me feeling so sad. Everytime I look at my stomach I get so mad. Because Dr. Bhoyrul did NOT do his due diligence as a doctor the first time around I had to have surgery TWICE when it could have been taken care of the first time around. I literally have two belly buttons now thanks to him. Do you want to know what the absolute worst part is? The belching DID NOT go away. I told them this several times. I went in February 2021 and said I am still having these problems. They brushed me off and said there was literally nothing that can be done about it. It is now October 2022. While I am thankful for the weight loss I am in pain everyday. Every meal. I have a lot of friends who had gastric before and after me. None of them have these issues. I live in pain every single day and in shame because after a meal I need to lock myself and be alone so I can literally belch out the gas. Please if you are thinking of doing any surgery with this office specifically Dr. Bhoyrul I encourage you to look elsewhere. I believe something went wrong in my surgery and he wasn't honest about it. I also believe he did not do his job as a caretaker and look at my tests/medical records efficiently from the beginning. If you read the reviews it is pretty consistent that Dr. Bhoyrul and his Nurse Practitioner Kirsten are amazing, after meeting them the reviews do not lie. Both of them make you feel like the most important patient that they have ever dealt with. They make you feel at ease and will answer any question that you have. Dr. Bhoyrul is extremely knowledgeable and has vast experience in laparoscopic surgery. He co-authored a textbook so he literally wrote the book on the subject. His bedside manner is amazing, he tells you in the pre op appointment that he will treat you like family and will never recommend anything to you that he wouldn't recommend to his family. first, as a human being and physician and surgeon, there is no better person than Dr. Bhoyrul. He saved my life and is responsbile for all the good things that have happened in my life since my surgery.... but his staff has failed him miserably. I tried getting an appointment in November and December. I had two insurance carriers. The back office staff never told the doctor that I needed to see him desperately. The mental health effects of lap band surgery were glossed over. Yes, I met with a shrink but she rubber stamps everyone. I was part of a study and man oh man, am I grateful for that... and Dr. Bhoyrul squeezed me in. But I had serious issues with weight loss coming too rapidly -- over a 100 lbs... and at this stage, 12 years down the road, I'm 10 lbs away from my lightest ever, but that's too light at 173 lbs at 5'10.5". Twice since surgery I've desperately needed to see the good Doctor, who is an amazing surgeon and has incredible "bed side manners" because he cares about his patients, truly cares... but his staff made the red tape so onerous and distasteful and impossible... that I was unable to see him. The result? Thousands of dollars out of MY pocket because Del Mar surgical support staff don't care about people. I called dozens of times to try to make an appointment because MY band is out of whack. I had $$$, time, everything... yet they were determined to make it impossible to meet with MY doctor (not theirs) who saved my life but doesn't comprehend the mental health effects of too rapid weight loss and the danger of PUSHIN rapid weight loss, and you know you did. Would I recommend Dr. Bhoyrul? In a heart beat. Without question. But I'd also recommend he do some serious consideration about the heart in his staff. They care more about their paychecks than patients. My band hasn't been adjusted for years. No other physician wants to touch another doctor's work and few understand the wholistic need for not only stomach adaptation, but mentally losing weight after a life time of fat requires more study. I'm sure Dr. Bhoyrul would love to talk with me about this as I am with him... but his feckless staff will have to make an appointment with me and apologize for their feckless behavior and lack of heart and concern for Dr. Bhoyrul's patients. We may be fat, even after weight loss, but it didn't help to be in extremis and have his staff not give a damn. With profound regret, I leave this comment and destroy whatever thread of relationship i might have had with the finest surgeon bar none in San Diego. I'm not sure why I've never thought to give a review on my Gastric Bypass experience. My whole process was done within 2-3 months tops. My healing time took longer then normal not because of the doctor but Mother Nature and my own doing. Dr. B removed my gall bladder and did the full RnY surgery. Did it hurt? Yes (but I'm also a wuss and have a low pain threshold) I developed colitis because unbeknownst to anyone I was allergic to the standard antibiotic prescribed after the surgery. Because I had gastrointestinal intestinal issues for a year after the surgery I couldn't take the vitamins and I wish I would have. I went from 297 to 143 and by a miracle I was able to conceive. I have no doubt that I only got pregnant because of the surgery. My cousin and I were both infertile and both of us had the surgery and boom 1 year later pregnant with our miracle babies. Right now I'm 173 and I'm content knowing I will shed the weight with cardio and healthy eating. The surgery took care of my portion control. I did zero working out after the surgery and I wish I had. I will now start working out in hopes that I build my strength back! read more

All Dr. Bhoyril and staff care about is the bottom line (money). They charge you for dietician appointments before you even go to them. So I subtracted those from my last payment and they sent me to collections. This unethical establishment sent me to freaking COLLECTIONS for $164 for services I DID NOT RECEIVE. I told the accountant that I had not received those services and would not pay for them and she continued to bill me and then sent me to collections. Dr. Bhoyril gets an attitude and forgets who you are after surgery. Actually he was rude and ignored me the same day of my surgery when I saw him at the hospital. My credit report has gone down 53 points because I didn't want to pay them for services I never received. I would keep looking for a doctor and staff that actually care about the patients and not just the cash. read more

Dr. Bhoyrul, Kirsten and his team are amazing and can't rave enough about them. Today is my second day post op and let me tell You I feel amazing. Dr. Bhoyrul and Kristen treat their patients as family and not just patient. I felt so comfortable after they came to talk to me in the pre-op room. I had a very bad anxiety before my surgery but just the reassuring look on their faces made my anxiety to decrease dramatically. thankfully my Dad, 81, found Dr. Bhoyrul thru Yelp, he had laparoscopic Hiatal Hernia surgery three weeks ago (1-9-19) and couldn't be better. The recovery was fast, they expected 2-3 nights in the hospital but after just one night Dr. Bhoyrul visited approximately 9am and said he could go home around lunch!!! I stayed overnight with my Dad after the surgery at Scripps Memorial off Genesee where the staff & room was amazing. This doctor cares deeply for each patient. It is very obvious in his words and actions. Note: prior to the surgery my father had his esophagus dilated by an ENT due to difficulty swallowing which led to complications including pneumonia so if you or loved one has both challenges I recommend the hernia surgery first to reduce the acid that could come up more easily once the esophagus is enlarged. read more

Totally discouraged. I wish I never had the gastric bypass. I'm still in severe pain and constant nausea. When I called the Drs office for support like it says to do on hospital discharge paperwork i was scolded by the receptionist asking me "why I am calling there? It's just a surgeons office. I need to go to the ER or PCP". So I went to the ER and nothing was wrong but Dr said I was still recovering and needed more pain meds. Here I am 2 weeks post surgery and still in severe pain and nausea. Not one call from the Drs office to check on me and I'm deathly afraid to call them. Any ways that's my experience. Dr Bhoyrul saved my life back I. 2007. I first had my Bypass. It was extremely diffcult due to my diabetes was out of control. I was producing insulin but my body could not absorb it. Though the gastroc bypass it helped. I loss 94 pounds and did not have to take medicine. For 5 yrs was free of meds. I loss touch of Dr Bhoyrul, then found him in 2013. Had trouble with my stomach. Approach with caution unless you have a unlimited bank account! I was referred to this outfit by my primary health provider everything was supposed to be paid for by my 2 insurance providers but the more I got sucked in the more they kept coming up with "new" costs! I am retired on ssi and have both medicare and Molina but they apparently wanted to milk me out of more than that! 1500 dollars and then 200 more dollars for the aftercare counseling sessions that Family Health Center (my primary Healthcare provider) could provide at no cost! They should have brought that up before wasting 6 months of my time jumping thru the pre surgery hoops! read more

They do more than wright loss surgery. I've been coming here for just over a year. Old Del Mar Surgical's team of Doctors was assigned to me when I was hospitalized with complications from a gastric bypass I had in 1998. Each Dr and Christian was friendly. I saw one of them every day and they talked to me and answered my questions for as long as it took. Seeing them in their offices now is much the same. The office staff is friendly and efficient. Dr. Bortz has called me multiple times to deal with my issues and that's very comforting. It's the first time I've ever had so much attention from any Doctor. I got lucky when this team of doctors was assigned to me and I will never consider going anywhere else. Oh, and Dr. Bhoyrul is a hugger. That, in and of itself, makes the whole process feel much more personal and comforting. read more
