I recently contacted Del Valle Clinic; their office hours are limited to Monday from 1 pm - 5 pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 12 pm - 5 pm. I did not receive a response to my phone message, so I emailed asking if they treat minors regarding a specific mental health concern and are accepting clients. After three days, I received an email from Alex:
"Hello,
Thank you for reaching out and for the information. One question would be which insurance you have and if you are open to private pay if we are unable to accept your insurance?"
I'm sure this is a typical concern for the office, although their services and fees are clear on their website. But I'm in a difficult situation, trying to find care for my child, and instead of answering *my* question, they asked first how I would be paying. Aside from being uncaring, it's also inefficient: I'm not sure this place can do what I need. I feel like I walked into a car dealership.
In contrast, other mental health facilities were very quick to wish me well, tell me what they do and don't treat, and offer to schedule the following steps to figure out logistics. It should be a big red flag for anyone looking for mental health support if your care question gets this response.
Luckily, I found another therapy facility nearby that specializes in my concern, and I found treatment for my child before Del Valle had even responded. That should be your second red flag. read more
