This is a great steak house. Posting this after dropping $300+ for dinner with two friends. Food was excellent. Service was good. What was not was our leftovers. Delaneys has excellent hash browns and large portions. We were looking forward to our hash browns. Unfortunately our server didn't include these in either of our take out boxes. I would give it a pass but we called it out when he cleared our plates. Additionally, we told our server that we were there for a birthday celebration, and while he did say a 'happy birthday', there was no offer of any birthday treat. Not a big deal as we were all too full to eat a desert, but birthday treats have become commonplace these days and not making the offer is detracting from the dining experience. Arrived sort of late in the day and was able to be seated immediately the original table I was placed at was near the kitchen but the staff asked if I wanted some place more quiet and they moved me. The wait staff made the meal a lot better than I think the actual taste was. They were very attentive (sometimes a little too aggressive) but I was well taken care of. I arrived during restaurant week and it was a prefixed menu option and the wedge salad was very good and simple. The filet were cooked perfectly I felt had too much going on and took away from the quality of the meat. And the cream cheese dessert was a nice capper to a good meal. Delaney's is one of few local steak restaurants on Madison's west side and is ALWAYS fantastic. The perfect place to go for really yummy food and an extremely cozy atmosphere. The crab cakes and seafood bisque are delicious, not fishy at all and you can tell the ingredients are quality. The filet is always cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth. I went for restaurant week and made the mistake of not making a reservation, so that's lesson number one... if I come back. Delaneys is set right across the street from schwoeglors bowling alley and has an old supper club steak house vibe. Prices are a little on the high end for what they offer but the portions are really good. No cocktail list, so just place your favorite bar drink. I got a whiskey old fashioned press and it was fine. Nothing spectacular. - Caesar salad: great. Large portion good dressing and they come around with fresh cracked pepper - Filet with mushroom bacon sauce: steak was good, not great. Worth the price for restaurant week. The sauce was a little overwhelming but who can go wrong with bacon and mushrooms. The potato's were just one up from the instant potatoes you make from a box and the veggies were bland and just seemed to be steamed all together (carrots and cabbage) - hot fudge sundae: quite good. Comes in a Martini glass and the hot fudge wasn't hot but had the same type of decadence that you would expect. - service: this is probably what made me decrease to a 3 star place. The host was very quick and to the point and the server was the same. My friend said he couldn't eat pork and she offered no substitutions and charged him extra to remove and add a separate sauce. Then she dropped off the check and came back 5 minute later when we were still eating dessert to see if the bill was ready, when it wasn't she didn't come back for another 20 min after we flagged her down. It was okay, I felt overall it was a pretty average steak and seafood house. I ordered chicken Oscar and my significant other got the steak (the steak was good.) The chicken was nothing special and I could easily make better chicken at home. It came with two pieces of crab on top and the rice was super bland. I also ordered a wedge salad and they forgot the bleu cheese and the French was very watery. For dessert we ordered the tiramisu and again it was okay, not a lot of flavor and wouldn't order it again. I first tried this place for restaurant week (great deal and I would highly recommend you come check it out for restaurant week if you haven't been) and came back again recently to celebrate a birthday. The staff was so friendly and nice from booking the reservations as I changed the reservation twice to taking care of all the details while I dined. The steak and key lime pie martini are my favorite things to order. If you come on Monday and Tuesday, the filet special is so affordable ($30) and tasty. The steaks usually come with salad or soup and I chose to upgrade to the seafood bisque. If you like seafood, that soup is great! I tasted the lobster and crab meat. Visited Delaney's last night for the first time as a guest of a friend. Great service, nice old fashioned with rail bourbon, great Caesar salad, although you have to ask for anchovies. Unfortunately, the $57 ribeye steak was 1/3 gristle. In hindsight I should have sent it back. 5/2/2013 at about 4:30 PM. We heard about this place (word of mouth and YELP) and wanted to stop in for a drink and dinner here before heading back to MKE. Our first impression upon seeing the location is that it looks like a ranch style super club. When we walked inside, we saw a large, bright (still daylight and lots of windows) retro-lounge bar area. We sat down and had graciously poured cocktails with our entertaining and very funny bartender (whose name I never got, darn it!). After imbibing, we checked in with the restaurant host and were seated (5:15 PMish) in a three or four table, dimly lit nook area of the restaurant, separated from other similar areas of the restaurant. It felt quaint, cozy and a bit romantic in there (see the picture). Appetizer: Crab Cakes; two to the order ($12.00). Though small, they were definitely house made and excellent. Entree: TBone Steak ($37.00): Good sized. Excellent. Ordered medium rare, the steak came out with a wonderful crispy char and was outstanding in flavor and tenderness. Our other order was Chicken Oscar ($28.00) which was also outstanding. String beans instead of potato was good - possibly steamed and tossed in a light butter sauce. Dinner was preceded by salads that were fresh and crisp. One of us had the raspberry vinaigrette that was obviously home-made (not bottled, at least). It's red-ish not white or orange/pink. I didn't get bread with this soup so I thought that was weird but I ate in the bar. Shrimp & Scallop Satay. Had it previously. The sauce remains in key places. Smells great next time I know to ask for extra celery and maybe a side of rice. This would be a great faux-stir fry. Went in with a deal buck that was about to expire. Asked for a grilled cheese to be made. Bartender found out it can be done. I had cheddar and swiss on sour dough bread and man did they use some butter. I brought the majority home - only finished the soup. This is that "older" crowd go-to place. After a lot of good classic R&B came on I believe it should be my go to. Folks are known by 1st names with the bartender. They have good pacing not to bother you (the bartenders) and allow you to order when you get it to. Didn't detect any attitude. When my grilled cheese was presented with Onion Rings... at least thre parties noticed my meal and asked if they changed the menu. Nope~ just requested it. I now know why they are the "Onion Ring King in Madison." They're seasoned well, hand battered in flour like New Orleans rings. Today, me and my family went to Delaney's. My dad works here, so he knows everyone. I even got to meet Head Chef Scott, and he gave us a handmade slice of chocolate cake. Robert, or Rob, was our server. He was very nice and got our food fast. I had a cheeseburger (as shown in the picture below) and had lemonade. The lemonade was very sweet and good, just how I like it. The cheeseburger was also very good, it was juicy and flavorful. And as far as cleanliness goes, this meets the expectations and more. The place was very clean and tidy, and the bathrooms were one of the cleanest I've seen. For desert, me and my sisters split a handmade slice of chocolate cake made by Head Chef Scott. It had whaffer cookies and whipped cream on the side. It was very tasty and delicious. It's also kid friendly, and they took good care of us. My overall ratings will be listed below. Just honestly and up front.....I have not eaten there. However, I heard that it was a good restaurant and I wanted to get some gift cards for my sister and my niece and family who live in Verona. I saw the December special....buy a $100 gift card and get a bonus $20 gift card. I was excited and called to order the gift cards. The person who answered the phone told me that it was only "in restaurant" purchases. Wow! So I asked him why that was....and if he was certain....and was told that he didn't know and he didn't make the rules. Obviously....he didn't care to ask or to find out and since I live in CA and this was supposed to be a surprise, I cannot do this. I did read the reviews....mostly good but mixed for sure about service. So.....they are not number one.....and have a bad attitude and this imo is unfair. Went there this week, and ordered their limited time anniversary special: Dinner for Two including NY Strip, King Crab legs, with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts, and one dessert for only $55.00. Each diner starts with the choice of soup or salad and bread basket. Loved how the crab legs were completely split in half-no annoying cracking here. The steak was very good. But it was the dessert that really stood out: we chose Baked Alaska, which was INCREDIBLE!!! The waiter explained this dessert isn't always offered, so call ahead. Nothing to write home about. Everything about this place was satisfactory. Something tells me this place used to be fancy and they've kept a couple of those past traditions. We had called ahead for a reservation on Monday night, they "didn't know if they'd be able to fit us in" because they were so busy. We showed up at 7:30pm and there were four other couples inside. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed like a supper club, and was nicely decorated. Staff were friendly. We had three members ask us if we were celebrating something (it was just a Monday dinner) so this might be a destination restaurant, maybe due to cost (?). It may have been mere speculation, but our first impression of the place was that they say you based on how well-dressed you were; there were two couples eating by the bar dressed in suits and dresses, in the immediate rear section there was a family dressed nicely who were getting ready to leave, and in the back of the restaurant there was a couple in street clothes. It appeared as though the host was seating based on presentation but like I said it could have been my imagination. They may have simply wanted to spread everyone out across the whole restaurant, give us our own privacy. For two people, having two entrees, two desserts, and one alcoholic beverage each, we expected the bill to be between $120-130, since a simple sweet potato was $7, but were surprised when it came to under $100. I had the chicken oscar, and it was well seasoned with a good amount of crab and my favorite part was that you could taste the fire through the chicken skin. My significant other had the six ounce bacon-wrapped filet which was wonderfully cooked, but his sweet potato came with a honey-walnut butter which didn't pair well with anything. We both thought the desserts were a bit underwhelming but it was a good meal overall. Had great and responsive service from the moment we walked in through the door for our business dinner. We started with the onion rings and drinks and placed our steak orders. We all ordered the filet medium rare, unfortunately they all came out pressing the boarder of Well Done. I don't think this was intentional because the sear on them was perfect. We ordered the rib eye that comes with truffle butter and garlic mashed potatoes. You can get a soup or salad. If you get a seafood bisque it's extra (but they don't tell you how much. It's $6). My coworker ordered the wedge salad which had half blue cheese and rasp vinaigrette dressing. Rib eye. Supposed to be succulent and melts in your mouth deliciousness. NOT. Because it was $34 we kept trying it but the butter didn't compliment the steak. The mashed potatoes were old and dry. We both didn't finish our steaks and I took mine home just because I felt bad to waste food but I won't eat it again. When the waitress came back to clear the table, my co worker said she didn't like the steak so she offered us a complimentary dessert. We selected the Guinness chocolate cake. Well, that came and it looked really dry. And when we tasted it, it was. This place was disappointing. Service was great. I like this place but everytime I go I seem to identify an issue with the dining experience, and thus I have to take two stars away. Delaneys is your classic steak and chop house with a supper club atmosphere. It has some classic features of traditional white table cloth restaurants, like the fact that your wait staff will unfold and place your napkin on your lap. You also have two wait staff who will take care of your table as a team. One of my issues with this place is that the wait staff have dropped the ball on multiple occasions in terms of timing. While we have two of them, I have on multiple occasions have had over ten minute waits to have my soft drink refilled, for example. Surely one of them can at least glance over and take a look to see if something needs attendance while taking care of a neighboring table? Even when I try to flag them down they just dont seem attentive. What is up with that, I don't know. Second the quality and availability of food can vary. I always order a steak of some sort. The steaks are listed as choice, angus, or piedmontese. There are times where I am cutting through a maze of grizzle (okay this is a little dramatic) or eating well marbled, tender prime meat. I wouldn't be the first to complain about getting a good steak, but, the gamble is disappointing. Consistently good meat at a steak house should be a given. I have come here multiple times on a Saturday evening and they run out of bisque three hours before closing. I could see this being an issue once in a while but three times in a row is annoying, especially when you are way before closing. In my humble opinion, the best steakhouse in Madison. Oh I grant you, Madison has no shortage of quality steakhouses (Tornado, Wonder Bar, etc). But Delaney's stands above all. I have never had a better bone-in ribeye, even in Chicago. Plus, unlike a lot of the other steakhouses in Madison (looking at you Ruth Chris), they include a side and a soup/salad with your meal. Under $40 for steak, side, starter??? Yep, sign me right up. For appetizers, the onion straws and button mushrooms are can't miss. Great intro to a night of incredible food. As far as drinks go, it would be hard to find more knowledgeable and engaging bartenders in Madison. They have an extensive wine list, and even more important, a great bourbon/whiskey selection.
