We wanted to go somewhere we haven't been in awhile. We were in the area, we had been there years ago so we figured why not. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We opened the door to packed waiting area and almost second guessed our decision. Quickly the two parties ahead of us were seated and we were next to be seated. ALL of the staff were very polite and friendly. We were initially. Seated at a booth, but it was a bit cramped for our liking , the hostess noticed immediately, and moved us to a table on the other side of the restaurant, which we were quite grateful for. The whole place was VERY busy, the wait staff scooting from table to table with amazing speed! Even though the place was packed, the noise level was quite tolerable for the Sunday breakfast rush! My breakfast, I went for the huevos rancheros. Ever since I had them while on vacation while in Arizona, I've been on a quest to find something that compares to the dish I had in Arizona. My take/ notes on their version: 1) The tortillas were crunchy rather than warm and soft, now hear me out, not that it's a bad thing, it was just a different.... Vehicle than the one I was expecting. 2) The menu did say "spicy" tomato sauce, and being a born and raised midwesterner, they were not kidding. It definitely had a.... Kick. I'm not saying it was on fire, but it definitely gave my mouth a tingle. 3) I was really missing some refried beans with it, maaaaybe that's just what I was expecting, but.... Don't get me wrong, I still cleaned my plate like it was my last meal, but there were just a couple things I would have changed if it were a perfect meal.

    Light and Lively breakfast

Eggs, fruit, and bacon were delicious! The sourdough toast wasn't anything special. The service was fast. Restaurant was clean.

I had the Cinnamon Roll French toast, which has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. It was very good. My companions had the gyros on the specials menu and the pancakes and bacon. They both really enjoyed their meals as well. The server we had was very attentive and pleasant. We will be coming back here for breakfast again!

My expectations were low, but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh and cooked reasonably well. The service is great, but the coffee leaves room for improvement... it just isn't awesome and I look for a really hardy cup of Joe at a dinner.

Being in a strange town.....Sun Prairie, WI thought I should eat a good breakfast. So I found the Country Cafe. Typical coffee shop with locals gathered at the counter swapping stories about farming and hunting. Got seated and ordered the Early Rise breakfast....2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and 2 bacon strips. Had coffee while waiting and the waitress came by three times to refill before my plate came. Pretty good service I think. Food came and it was just right and tasty! Nice place very clean and well lighted with lots of parking. The waitresses were all wearing Green Bay Packers tshirts....go Packers! Reasonable prices too...out the door for $8.50 not bad! I have no problem recommending the Country Cafe!

We just discovered this place after the write up in madison.com. Based on the name and former ownership we never would've thought of them for dinner.... And assumed they did not serve alcohol. The pasta was quite good, fish fry decent as well. Service was fantastic and I loved supporting a family run local business. Next time I want to try the pizzas with homemade crust, salad, and lasagna. Not an extensive beer and wine list, but a little something for everyone. Good prices on beer, $3 for a hopalicious. Wine ranged between 7 to $10 for a glass. We will definitely be back.

Steak, eggs and red potatoes with cheddar and onions. Good stuff!!!

Wife ordered calamari appetizer. The free bread came - it didn't have a "dip" but on the other hand it was flavored with spices and even a little tomato sauce baked into the crust. I've had better but also worse. It wasn't oversweet like so much steak house bread. French onion bowl wasn't huge, but then it was only $7. It was decent though not amazing. The calamari was quite good. My wife really liked it. It came with two sauces- marinara and a mild horseradish. The horseradish was great, and I focused on it. We shared some kind of Italian sampler meal with chicken parmigiana. Fettucini "minelli", and parmesan-crusted steak. The "minelli" was basically alfredo. Slightly more oily & less creamy. The noodles were a little dry, like they'd been sitting out for a while before they were served. They didn't do much for me, but I don't like alfredo, so you can dismiss my lack of enthusiasm if you love alfredo. The steak itself was okay, but the "parmesan crust" was a half-inch of pesto, grated parmesan, and (I think) bread crumbs. It tasted mealy and a little tasteless to me, and somewhat spoiled the steak. In retrospect after the first bite, I should've scraped it off and just enjoyed the meat. The chicken parmigiana was absolutely middle-of-the-road. I was happy with it, but not exultant. In general none of the "parmesan" emphasized dishes had a strong parmesan flavor, like they were worried I'd be turned off by it. Maybe a Wisconsin thing? They did add a bowl of grated Parmesan flavor I could spoon onto my food and I used most of it on my fettuccine. For dessert we had the limoncello cake. I thought it was a teensy bit dry, but my wife LOVED it. Had the leftovers for breakfast the next day. Overall I'd rate it 3 stars for my experience, and 4 stars for my wife's. For 3.5 stars The polite & attentive service bumps it to 4 I guess.

But once you walk in, it's a completely different story. The service was excellent. Our server was friendly, helpful, and had actually been to Rome, which made the conversation more interesting and added a nice touch of authenticity. And the food? Way beyond what we expected. Everything was well done and felt like a real step up from what the exterior might lead you to believe. You can feel the history in this up close, the statue at the entrance of the Trevi Fountain almost pulls you in before you even realize what you're looking at. The detail is incredible, even with the wear and mineral buildup from years of flowing water, it actually adds to the character. Standing there, tossing a coin over your left shoulder, it's one of those moments that feels a little touristy... until you do it. Then it just feels right. Like you're taking part in something that's been going on for generations. Simple tradition, but a pretty cool one. This place is a bit of a hidden gem. The mushroom pasta dish (tagliatelle) was definitely the stand out of our meal. While the budino was delicious, I didn't get the butterscotch flavors as it was noted in the menu. I really liked my white sangria but my husband didn't care for his barrel aged Negroni. Love the tiles behind the bar and the history of this classic place.
